We stayed here for almost three years in a 2 bed, 2 bath. It is not perfect, but in my opinion I don't think any apartments really can be. I think all of the staff try their best to help, and most of our maintenance requests were handled within a day or two. The only instance of maintenance feeling a bit slow was when our AC was broke in the summer and it took about a week and we had to go in the office to get them to come help. The apartments are old, including appliances, counters, etc., but it all works. The mobile washing machine is kind of trash, but still beats shared laundry without a doubt. Sometimes the office is closed/left unattended without notice which can be a bit annoying if you need something, but they respond well to email. Sadat is great, and Gloria (newer I think) is also not bad. I don't recall the maintenance workers names but they are always working and trying their best it seems. They even helped us get back in our apartment after we got locked out (free of charge!!). The pool lifeguards left a bit to be desired. There were two of them but they would often take their 15 minute breaks at the same time and make everyone clear the pool. Why not just take their breaks separately? They were also always on their phones (doesn't matter for me I can swim), which could be concerning for some. Guest parking is a bit expensive but is available. Our rent went up ~110 a year over our three year stay, which feels rough but is probably standard with all apartments. Location is great. Metro close, Safeway close, nice walking locations close, pretty quiet area. Can't complain much about this. Overall I think this is a great place to stay for a couple of years and the staff really do try it seems. read more

I have lived in Commons of McLean apartments for probably 10 years and I am happy with the living experience. Sadat and Gloria in the office have been very responsive the questions and requests I've had. Thai, Rene, and the other maintenance personnel have been prompt in taking care of any requests. The atmosphere is cordial. I have found other residents friendly and have never had a problem in this area over all the years renting here. The apartments are within walking distance of the McLean metro which is a plus. The center of Mclean is close, a mile or two away. There are plenty of sidewalks and places to walk both from my apartment and with a short drive. read more

We've been living here for about a month now -- so of course this review may be updated in the future. As of right now, we are VERY satisfied with the Commons of McLean. Our first visit was scheduled on a Sunday evening with a representative named Elizabeth. However, she wasn't there -- but the two individuals in the office stepped right up and still went through with our scheduled tour. Alicia, the leasing manager, was our tour guide. She gave us a very honest review and specifics about the specific unit we'd be taking over. The model apartment we toured was gorgeous -- and it also matched the one we moved into. Alicia was amazing and kept in touch with us up until we settled in! Alicia and the rest of the staff members have been phenomenal. Always extremely friendly and helpful! Upon our move in, our AC was broken, but maintenance was inside already fixing in as we were unloading our belongings. Our unit was freshly painted and had brand new carpet upon our move in. As with every lease, we had 5 days to report anything we saw. We had minor issues, and all of them were looked at and fixed no more than 48 hours after we put in the request. While the buildings are old and the renovated apartments are done so a bit cheaply - we are extremely happy with this community. It is very quiet and safe - we never hear our neighbors unless they're in the hallway. Trash room is emptied every few days. Parking is always abundant. Packages are safe. You also don't have to pay for parking (unheard of) -- and what's crazier, your guests don't have to pay for parking or park in very few designated spots! There are also playgrounds, walking grounds, and a community pool. It's also so close to 95 and Tyson's! But, in a community that's tucked away so you don't see or hear the traffic outside your window. (**For reference, we live on the side that is close to Anderson and Magarity). You're also in walking distance of a 24hour Safeway that has a gas station attached to it. The only downsides so far are that (1) there's no community gym, (2) you hear everything going on in the hallways - which isn't terrible - but we've got some pretty obnoxious neighbors, and (3) no elevators, move in was quite the leg work out. Other than that, we see ourselves staying here for a while and we're very happy with our living arrangement. read more

We viewed three different units, applied with a joint application and was denied. My income alone was enough to qualify for the 3X monthly rent as the co-applicant, but still denied our lease from the credit check company they use. Not only is it the most expensive credit check at $75 a person, the credit check company has terrible reviews. People getting denied for past credit issues that have been repaired. More than 60 complaints and not a member of the BBB. New tenants beware. Like I said earlier, I make enough money to qualify on my own and my ccrefit score is above 800 and was denied. Don't waste your time here. It was a hard Inquiry on my credit and will be there for 24 months. Not happy with their process. The entire complex will be demolished in a few years to build new high rise apartments. read more

A few years ago, we lived in a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom unit for a year on the 2nd floor. Pros - The location is excellent as you are within easy walking distance of metro, and quick driving distance to 495. It is right next to a grocery store, some restaurants, and a gas station. I was pleased with the unit size and park-like grounds for the pricing. There are doggie bag stations for the people who own dogs and there are plenty of sidewalks in the surrounding area to take dogs for longer walks. Unless your neighbors are in the hallway, you can almost never hear them. Parking is free and there are usually plenty of spots for both residents and guests. There are not any hidden fees for moving in and moving out (no elevators though). Getting our deposit back at the end was fairly easy (received within 30 days at new address), but we did make sure to fill in all holes we had made in walls and thoroughly clean before we left. Cons - There were cockroaches everywhere! We found them under furniture, inside kitchen cabinets, and in my BED! They have an exterminator who will spray for bugs, but it didn't seem to help. We had a major water leak and the response from both management and maintenance was resistant. There was a slow response to after hours emergency maintenance line. I had to make multiple phone call follow ups, emails, and argue with the manager multiple times until anything was done. Water damage in the same area happened twice more within a few months and the slow response was the same. I became concerned about mold as they did not bring fans/dehumidifiers and only cut into the drywall to let it air out (days after) because I argued with the manager. The manager refused to have a professional test for mold. I believe they have a new manager now who is hopefully more responsive. My suggestion for the Commons of Mclean to improve is more effective treatments for bugs (consider going with a different exterminator if you haven't already) and to take emergency water damage more seriously. read more

I know it's too much to ask for a business to actually care about its patrons. I wrote this review so that anyone who wants to feel secure in their rental choice knows that the owners/management at The Commons of McLean have no respect or regard for the individuals and families from whom they make their money. I have lived here for almost 1 year. Overall, I would say that I *love* my apartment. It is extremely spacious, well-insulated, and virtually soundproof. I am 5 minutes from the Tysons Corner Mall, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and 495. The units are somewhat dated (i.e. white cabinets and counters in the kitchen; portable W/D since these older buildings don't have W/D hook-ups in each unit). However, that was never a problem for me. I live alone in a 2BR/2BA unit and the total for my monthly water and electric bills has never exceeded $120...sometimes coming in as low as $80. I have had no issues with bugs, mice, or any other "pest" infestation. Lots of families and young professionals live in the community. For fitness-conscious folks, there is no fitness center on the property. The office staff have always been friendly and helpful. Maintenance requests have been taken care of in a timely fashion. The lone time I accidentally locked myself out of the apartment, one of the office staff arrived within 10 minutes and let me back in...no hassle and no charge. Recently, I received a notice from management regarding my lease renewal. To my utter shock, they are raising my rent by 25%. Come to find out, the ownership/management are *trying* to price out the existing tenants. The plan is to remodel these units and upgrade them with all of the fancy amenities that have become "standard" for supposed "luxury" apartments in the Metro DC area. Once those renovations are complete, they'll put them back on the market and fill them up with more "attractive" residents. (Attractive = More Affluent) I realize that it is completely within the management/owners' rights to make this change. However, they are destroying one of the few apartment communities in the heart of Tysons Corner which caters to people who want the convenience of living in McLean without the hefty price tag and prerequisite snobby attitude so frequently found here. Such a shame, really. I would definitely have stayed here had they not been quite so greedy. read more

I live in this area, and it's fairly cheap considering the prices around in McLean, which are horridly expensive compared to my old place in Centreville. My rent WAS 1800$ until it came under new management. And like new management, come new pricing. My rent was increased near 2000$, my utility bill is paid not by usage, but by SQUARE FOOT. The apartments are old, there are the occasional leaks-in-the-roof-that-floods-EVERYTHING-and-pain-in-the-ass-insurance-claim thing, the carpets are made out of nylon and it smells, not noticeable after a while, but it still smells. The grass is cut a little less than often, but once the rent goes over 2000, it becomes less than what you pay for. Management is super friendly and organized, but beware of a first floor apartment, you will get leaks, and the office does its best to properly get in your way. read more

I really can't say how excited I am to move out in two weeks. THERE ARE BUGS YEAR-ROUND. The walls are so thin that I can hear and smell everything my neighbors do - cooking, smoking, arguing. There is one washing machine in the basement of my building that not only breaks down regularly, but has a strange scent. The last straw was when the plumbing for the building backed up into my kitchen sink and flooded my kitchen. I still have to keep the kitchen door (yes, it has a door) closed or else being in the apartment smells like sewage, no matter how many bottles of bleach I try to counteract it with. My carpet gets damp when it rains, so I feel that the building is not very well insulated. The office staff has frequently been rude to both myself and in conversation with other tenants. (They couldn't be happier to work with potential tenants, so be warned.) Also, they're knocking down about half the complex in about 6 months, so you'll probably be asked to leave mid-way through a lease. I can't even imagine. The location is great, but there are many other complexes in the area, so I strongly urge you to shop around before leasing here. read more

TERRIBLE COMMUNICATION. I pay my bills on time and take pride in having good credit. My roommate and I left forwarding address when we moved out and neither of us received a bill. We never received a phone call or an email from the Commons of Mclean after moving out. What I did receive was a collections call for $88.41 from a collections agency. After contacting The Commons of Mclean, I see I also have 2 months of electricity charges and I am being told there is a 6 week lag which makes no sense because there was no 6 week lag in them sending my initial electricity bill. I no longer have access to the login to verify these charges. My main issue is before sending someone to collections I would think that you would make an attempt to contact me. Every other time I have received emails and even phone calls from The Commons of Mclean. I was also told that it is no one's fault. Which just shows that the same procedures will be followed and the same could happen again. I was told to just rush and pay collections and I "should" be fine and my credit "shouldn't" be effected. I should never be in the position to think this could possibly happen. I would never move back there or to any apartment managed by them. They are being torn down as they are old anyway. But the prices are high only due to the surrounding area. Prices have nothing to do with the state of the apartments or the old appliances you are only paying for location by living here. read more

Pros: Affordable apartment with decent indoor space and green space outside Walking distance to McLean metro station Walking distance to Safeway which opens 24x7 Concrete structure so it blocks sounds better than wooden structure The crews clean out the garbage room frequently and consistently No parking fee Cons: The building itself is old so something breaks every two or three months Ongoing construction around the apartment complex A portion of apartment was sold to a real estate developer so the affected residents have to move out before May 2019 Like other reviews, you can hear noises from the stairway (the door isn't completely sealed) You see cigarette butts everywhere (not a smoke free community) There were several auto-theft incidents (cars on the bricks, rims got stolen) in the past year No gym The time it takes to resolve the ticket can be a bit long (but most handymen are friendly and courteous) The renovation job was done cheaply compared with the usual Avalon apartment group and Rosslyn Heights. Commons of McLean is by no mean a luxury apartment but for its price and location, it is worth to consider. read more

The location is great: across the street from Safeway, Starbucks, and the Lost Dog Cafe; a short walk to the metro station; a short drive to the malls at Tyson's; and close to the beltway. The grounds are well kept and the property is huge. That being said if you lease an apartment closer to Dolley Madison Blvd. be warned that there is a lot of high-rise construction going on now (and probably for the next year or so) so it's bound to be noisy. Where I'm located, closer to Magarity Road it's nice and quiet, though. There is always plenty of parking, even for guests. My only issue with the grounds are the dog areas. You pay a $500 non-refundable pet fee upon move AND a $50 per month "dog rent." The dog stations are, more often than not, out of waste bags and they are in the woods in unlit areas, so if you're walking your dog at night you have to bring a flashlight. I brought this to the property managers attention and was simply told "thank you for addressing your concerns, we will look into it." That was over a month ago and nothing has changed. The apartments themselves are alright. They're marketed as "renovated luxury apartments," which could be misleading, depending on what your definition of luxury is. I would guess that the renovations were done 3-5 years ago and they definitely were done on the cheap. Stainless steel appliances, but off brand ones, and a coil burner stove (I didn't even know they still made those). Dark wood cabinets, which seemed nice in the model, are actually peeling off in my unit because they're coated in cheap laminate. The counters are nice and look like granite in the photos, but they're formica. The newly replaced windows and sliding glass doors are nice, though, as they block out noise and help keep the place cool/warm. The new carpet that was installed a day or two before move smells so badly. Even after living here for nearly two months the smell is still slightly lingering. We've done everything from leaving the windows open all day on nice days, frequent vacuuming, leaving jars of baking soda out, candles, and even buying eight house plants and two HEPA air purifiers to help this issues, and yet the smell still lingers. I would say I've gotten used to it, but I can still slightly smell it when I come home from work and I'm certain my guests can smell it. It's a cheap carpet, chemical-like smell and it's not pleasant. Maybe soon it will be gone... who knows? On a positive note the apartments have huge rooms (except for the bathroom, which is pretty small). The kitchen has tons of cabinet and counter space, there's a large pantry, a large hall closet off the foyer, a linen closet near the bathroom, a large walk-in closet in the bedroom, and a large storage closet off of the patio. The staff here are nice for the most part. They've always been kind and helpful when I've needed them. The maintenance, although nice, are very slow to fix issues, and often times (especially when I submit a maintenance request online) I have to call the office several days later to ask what's going on. I'm sure it's not their fault, they're probably just overworked. Like I previously stated, it's a huge property, and I think there are only around 3 maintenance men. My final thoughts on these apartments are they are luxury apartments, but done cheaply in very old buildings. The location is great, they're spacious, and have all of the amenities that most people are looking for. You can walk to the metro and be just about anywhere in the area within half an hour. For the price vs. what you get, these apartments are a great value. read more

This very charming little apartment complex is in a fantastic location near the metro, shopping and a short commute into DC. The apartments are well-designed, so even the smaller ones seem roomy. But the best thing about life in the Commons is the staff - - everyone from the maintenance crew to the front office is extraordinary. Always responsive, always friendly, always helpful. I would not recommend living here. The location is great, but the apartment complex was lax about upkeep in the unit we lived in. Water was coming in through the roof into the walls, and their solution was to wait for it to dry and paint over it. Every time it rained it got worse. I took them a few months to bother fixing the roof, and they never fixed the walls. They even charged us for a "cleaning fee" when we moved out due to the state of them!! Plus they did not send us a bill or make any attempt to contact us, they simply sent ti to a collection agency. Thanks a lot guys. read more

Apartments have a good layout, very quiet (can't hear neighbors much at all), and the location is amazing.

Much like the previous reviewer, I too have lived at the Commons for about a year, and I too received the lease renewal which asked for approximately $300 more for rent in an effort to *push* out tenants so that they could remodel the apartments and put them on the market for much higher rent rate. It is a shame b/c this is one of the few complexes who allows students or new working professionals to live in the WMA without the hefty price of most apartments in the area. Here is a summary of pros and cons: Pros: The location, you're close to Tysons, the Safeway grocery store (which conveniently also has a gas station) and a short ride away from DC. The price is nice and the buildings are built strong- the only time you ever hear noise is in the hallway of the building or from the parking lot- the walls and floors are thick so otherwise you're pretty well insulated. Parking also isn't really a problem which is nice. Cons: VERY dated apartment, literally NOTHING worked when I first moved in. The washer broke (with my clothes in it), dryer had to be replaced (yet it still takes HOURS to dry my clothes), dishwasher was broken, literally all the light bulbs in light fixtures didn't work, and I could smell the neighbor below me smoking b/c of large gaping holes behind the plumbing under the sink in the kitchen and bathroom. Once my handyman bf filled the gaps with sealant and fixed the appliances we could function again. The portable washer and dryers are such a hassle, perhaps if I'd had some updated ones it wouldn't have been as bad- you have to roll the washer to the sink and use the water from the faucet to fill it. I had my garbage disposal break which had to be fixed b/c otherwise your sink can't drain fast enough when you're running the washer. The washer has messed up a few of my shirts and the dryer is incredibly slow at drying clothes. Plus there is a tube coming out the back of it which exerts the heat into a small bucket (that you fill with water to catch the lint) and it ends up filling your apt with so much hot humid air that you end up running your a/c on full to try and cool down the apartment. Also beware of the construction in the area- there have been a few times when they close parts of the road down for construction. Overall, the Commons aren't bad- Alicia is a fantastic leasing agent, always friendly and very helpful and I think she made the experience much better. If you're willing to live in a unit that was most likely built in the 1960s with very little updates for an affordable price, then this is the place for you. If you're looking for an apartment with relatively up to date appliances wait until the units are renovated and then pay $300 more. The area is safe, I've always felt safe and overall the living experience has been ok. read more

I've lived here a year and love it. The area is quiet and close to everything. Though you are in a huge metropolitan area, it does not seem like it because there is plenty of open space. One of the low rise complexes, reasonably priced. The apartments are old but they are well kept. I've contacted maintenance on a number of instances (generally late at night) and my concerns have been fixed or fixed enough that they could wait until the next day. The staff is nice and always helpful. The only reason I am leaving is that I am moving out of the area. It is within walking distance to the new metro that is being build. read more
