I was angry when I wrote my review for The Container Store so I thought I'd come back for a "do over". PROS - lots of cool stuff to help get and keep you organized - modern/sleek look CONS - sometimes the do-it-yourself route can be tougher than originally expected - some things are WAAAY over priced - just like Home Depot, some of the staff isn't as knowledgeable as you'd think TIPS for Elfa closets: - Do your research before heading here for the Elfa closets, don't think they'll be able to help you come up with a custom closet. It's just a sales rep who will place the order for you w/o much a "design" background. - They charge 30% of your total cost to have someone come to your home to install and that doesn't include any extra tear down fees... you might want to search for your own handyman if you think you'll have trouble - Make sure they are UP FRONT about any items on backorder. If you are coming to pick up your order at a later date, make sure they allot what's in stock to your order NOW and not when the time comes to pick your order up. We had most of our closet order on a 4-6 week backorder b/c they waited 3 days AFTER we paid for our stuff before they gathered our items for pick up. :) read more

It seems like everyone is enamored with this store, but for the live of me I can't figure out why. True, the service people are nice, but this places is way overpriced when compared to Bed and Bath. I priced out 10 shelves using their Elfa shelving system, and it came to $400. A similar shelf system anywhere else would be half as much. My recommendation is to steer clear of their shelving systems. The are really overpriced bordering on rip-off. read more

I just had the worst time at the container store in San Francisco! the worst customer service ever!!!...I received an e-card for $80 in my email, from a friend. I thought yippy...shopping... I just moved to the city, I don't have a printer so i wrote out the info and I had a copy on my phone...WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM???? HOLY MOSES!... As soon as I walked in the store I went straight to a cashier and told her my situation, she said no problem go shopping and we can use the info on my phone and it will be fine. I went shopping found a few extra things I needed and went back to check out. the girl I had spoken with was not their but a man named "ERIC" was. I explained the whole thing again pulled up the information on my phone for him to look at and that was the beginning of the end! I had to explain it was and e-card on my email, the information on my phone. he acted as if I were lying to him. I had the information written down on a piece of paper and I tried to show in my phone more than once, but he would not look at my phone. he got on the phone talk to someone for few long seconds and was told that the manager and theft control/something to that affect...said no they would not take the information and that was the end of the conversation for "ERIC". I tried again to explain that that the information was on my phone. but to no avail. I walked out but not before getting the managers name and phone number (Kathleen Conners-415-777-9755) who was even ruder to on the phone than "ERIC" was to me in person. When my friend Amelie called her to have the situation corrected she was treated badly on the phone and was never able to contact Kathleen. Amelie was told each time she called that Kathleen was out to lunch...how long do Manager go to lunch? I did get a nice phone call from the General Manager of the San Francisco Store. he was kind and polite. he said that "ERIC was disciplined. I personally wanted the young man FIRED along with KATHLEEN CONNERS! To The Container Store: Your representative "ERIC" and Kathleen Conners have made my experience with your store, made it clear that I have never shopped at The Container Store, and after my experience there on August 16, 2012 at 1:00pm. I will never walk into The Container Store, San Francisco to shop and spend my hard earned money or that $80.00 gift card and I will never recommended The Container Store to anyone. read more

They have cool stuff, yes, but very expensive... but I mostly gave this review because I paid $1000 for a shelf and I've been waiting since 3pm for the parts to arrive in my apt. Here I am at 6:30pm and still waiting. They explicitly made the shipping and installation into 2 separate days (?!?). All I need is an hour text before arrival, instead of me wasting half of my day (and another half tomorrow for installation). Someone please tell them it's 2015, and they need to act like they're aware of that fact if they still want my bid'ness. read more

Seriously, if you have a smaller place, or really, any place, the container store has tons of ingenious products to maximize and organize your space. I really like this store. They have a great selection of... containers. And also lots of other stuff, like kitchen utensils (albeit no flatware), laundry hangers, and giant metal shelving frames. The staff are friendly, the things they sell are well-priced, and it's conveniently located. When I had to buy something that I couldn't easily carry back in one trip, they held onto the second part for me while I trekked home and back with part one. I may be weird, but I find browsing this store very fulfilling. There's a bunch of nice stuff that you might not have previously considered for your own living space and you can come away with some useful stuff. I recommend checking it out. read more

He went above and beyond to make sure I had an excellent customer experience, patiently answering all of my questions and working with me to find the best fit for my tricky dimensions. Juan and I exchanged phone numbers, and he even gave additional guidance as I worked to install my shelving on a Saturday (his day off!!). With a name like The Container Store, one would expect them to carry every single imaginable storage device known to man. I was kind of let down when i came here earlier today in search of a small table/shelf to place our coffee maker on. They had none. None at all. They were all either too big, too small or too flimsy. They do, however carry a lot of other stuff which I will give them credit for. But it's a lot of the fancier things I can't really afford anyway... I mean, a $129.00 Trash Can? You Craze. - Well I take that back, the day that I could afford something like this, I probably WILL buy it. SO, with that said... If you're driving to this location and you know what you want, use their GoShop! Click & Pickup service! It's a fantastic easy way to make your shopping experience a breeze. Go online to shop for what you want, pay, and pick your pickup time (seems to be as early as 3-4hrs from when you order online). Pull in to the garage next door and park in one of the 3 click/pickup spots - pick up the phone, and someone will bring your order down and load it into your trunk in 5 minutes. Drive off without paying a cent for parking. It's that easy! I haven't actually been in this store (although aren't they all the same?) - but parking seems like it would be a hassle otherwise if you wanted to shop in person. $2 per 20 minutes and it looked to be attendant/valet run (at least on a weekend). Pretty awesome little (actually big, two floors, ya heard?) place to get knickknacks to hold your stuff in. I had been looking for an airtight glass container to keep decorative bath salts in. On top of a myriad of oversized tupperware containers, laptop bags and random clearance items on offer, I found fruit preservation jars which fit my needs after asking around at Bed, Bath and Beyond and...well, beyond that too. Two floor container outlet right next to the Metreon. Prices are hard to compare to, but definitely not at the dollar store level. read more

My husband and I drove from south San Jose to San Francisco because the two women at the ELFA desk at Santana Row have been nasty on 2 occasions. They won't even answer a question unless you have an appointment and then tell you there are no appointments for awhile. We have been pressured to leave 20 minutes before the store closed. Every single person we dealt with at SF location was super helpful and friendly. We picked up an online order and also had items pulled while in the store. I know exactly what I need so I'm low maintenance. Thank you to employees at SF for making my drive worth it. read more

It would have been 5 stars except it seriously annoys me when the cashier asks for my phone # every single time I go there - HELLO! don't you save my # to your system so the minute I run my credit card, you should have it??????? I don't understand why they need the customer's phone # in the first place. If I refuse to give my #, it takes much longer because they explain why they desperately need your phone #, and that they won't sell it or anything blah blah blah. I like this store. It has almost every kind of container you could want in a variety of shapes, sizes, materials and prices, and they also have storage racks, hangers and gift wrapping stuff. I've purchased tons and tons of stuff here over the years - laundry bags, kitchen containers, bathroom and shower accessories, jewelry holders, gift boxes, nice hangers, a step trashcan for my grandma ($80 but high quality and worth saving her back pain), desk organizers, etc., It's conveniently located downtown, near BART and Muni. Down in the parking garage next to it, there's a reserved spot and a phone to call up to the store. This makes picking up larger items easier. read more

I HATE disorganization. Hate it. Get it out. I find it funny that most guys of the hetero persuasion hate this store as much as I hate disorganization - they get dragged there by their women and spend the whole time looking toward the window or door for escape. Ladies, don't torture them - they could care less and if you leave them at home, you can shop without a bored, dejected man-child dutifully following behind you. I love this store so much I practically get a store-gasm when I go. They literally have a container in every size you could possibly imagine, from teeny-tiny to huge. And they have some cool kitchen stuff, too (you have to go upstairs). I went there today to look at their storage boxes for papers, photos, etc. I found the perfect ones there that were the sizes I was looking for plus the colors I wanted. The best thing I've ever gotten from here is a jewelry organizer that you can hang in your closet or from a hook on the wall or closet door. It has these clear pockets so you can see all of your jewelry, and it's double-sided. It has some larger pockets near the bottom for necklaces and bracelets. I got this years ago and still think it's better than sliced bread. No joke. Who the hell wants a jewelry box full of tangled necklaces and earrings?? Not I. This store will hold your stuff for you after you've bought it, and let you come back later to pick it up. No charge. You let them know at the register, and when you come to get it, you drive down into the parking structure next to the store, follow the signs, call them from the phone on the wall, and they will come down with your stuff and put it in your car. Also, everyone there is super-friendly and polite, but not overbearing and pushy, which is nice. The Container Store is not cheap, but they pretty much always have what you need, so it's totally worth it, and their stuff lasts. Don't waste your time with Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc. for these kinds of things. You'll just end up coming here anyway. read more

The last two times I have been in the San Francisco location the store was a mess, very few sales people (and the ones who were around were chatting with each other rather than customers). My friend and I were hanging out in SF and we got tired of shopping around for clothes so she took me to the Container Store. "Container Store? What is that???" I said, oblivious to what it was. "Can't you see the sign?" she said "What sign?" We were walking towards it but I still couldn't see it, but even it I did what was is?? So now we are there- Oh it looks like a Container Store, first level lots of trash bins, haha! Ok I get it. Look around she shelving, storage boxes. I can't rememeber what is upstairs and downstairs. I see more stuff- kitchen stuff, arts and crafts, office supplies, cd racks, shoe racks.....everything and anything to get ORGANIZED! I come to my conclusion I FINALLY know what the Container Store is. It is a small version of IKEA, without those lovely wish you can take home already made rooms, and a mixture of Bed Bath and Beyond. But I still don't get the name. It's like Berkeley Bowl. This store amazes me. I can wander aimlessly, not to the extent I can at the mecca that is Target, but enough so that five minutes feels like one and I always find new container contraptions to satisfy the Type-A inside me. Today I was on a hunt for a small container to hold vitamins, and I needed one that cleared a rather low clearance in a drawer. Did they have it? Absolutely. Not just one, but a few options. There really are no words to express how amazing the customer service was in the Elfa Closet section of this store. Moving into a 100+ year old house with oddly shaped teeny tiny closets was always going to be a challenge. The Container Store made it so much easier. We'd spent a month ripping apart, stripping, sanding, plastering, and painting three closets in preparation. We decided on the Elfa system for the shelves, and spent a few hours with Hannah getting them designed. She was so patient and helpful and worked through us with all our questions. These closets are so old and weird, with the strangest dimensions, with no two the same, so the designing was quite a process. Went by quick though. A few weeks later, I was looking at the drawings we walked out with, I realized that we had measured something incorrectly, and so I headed back to Hannah. She was a trooper and spent another hour plus rearranging and getting it all right. Delivery and installation were a breeze and now we have a huge beautiful clothes closet, a nice big winter clothes and office closet, and a small closet just for my shoes! Totally worth the price. Everything else about the store is great. People are oddly happy working here. Whenever I need anything, I buy it online for pickup, drive the car to the garage, skip the valet parking and park in the 20 minute pick up spot. It's so fast and easy, trust me, don't do it any other way. read more

As far as Container Stores go, this one is right up there with the best. The people are helpful and the store is laid out just as all the others, so you can find what you need very easily. Parking is impossible, though you can park in the overpriced corporate lot a few blocks away. They also don't have the best way to transport your large containers. (No tape-on handles?) After spending a few thousand dollars on customizing my closets, I found both the employee product knowledge (consulting) and customer service was rather uninspiring. Overall my closets are now better than their original state, but if I were to do it over, I'd probably give a place like California Closets or some other custom outfit a closer look. There is a reason that the Container Store on 4th street has close to 300 reviews and 4 stars. Its not typical you see a large retail store get such rave reviews, and I can officially say that I am converted to a HUGE fan. I have passed by the Container Store may times but never felt like over paying for containers... I clearly had no idea what I was missing out on. I had to shop for a very specific carrying tote for an important client. I searched online and saw an image posted on Pinterest and it was at the Container Store for a fraction of what I thought it would cost. I arrived at the Container Store needing to purchase 10 of these particular bags. I was greeted at the door by a very friendly face (didn't catch her name) and then later helped by another very helpful woman. She quickly got on a computer, looked up the bag I asked about, and then directed me to the exact location on the floor. By this point, I was already impressed with how helpful, knowledgeable and pleasant the staff was. I am always running these type of errands for work (I work in the event industry) and I had become use to crappy retail service. I was later helped by someone EXTREMELY helpful by the name of Patrick. I told him about my event and my needs. He was truly gave top notch service that I wouldn't even expect from the most high-end retailer. Not only did he look up other stores that carried the bag I needed (without even me asking), he actually came up with a really creative alternate solution! You could tell he truly cared. I am so grateful and extremely impressed with the level of service he provided! He saved me a ton of time, stress and even ended up coming up with a BRILLIANT solution in a matter of minutes! I think the part I was most blown away by is that he came up with a really unique and clever idea in such a friendly manner. I am clearly still impressed hours later :) I recently moved to a new condo in SF and am looking forward to exploring the other merchandise at the Container Store. I think I like this place! Yay! I had heard several friends mention this place in passing. I love the simplicity of the name, but it's almost misleading. Need containers? I think we all need a container for SOMETHING, but my God this store is almost overwhelming! There are containers for anything and everything, which I dare say borders on too much. Still, as a person who hates Ikea, this is the next best thing without all the mayhem and do-it-yourself-iness. There were plenty of cute cute containers, lots of plastic stuff, and tons of things I didn't even know what to make of or do with. A company that hasn't experience layoffs, and where the employees are actually HAPPY and FRIENDLY, even during the hectic holiday season? Do you like store that is *inspires* you to get organized? If so, then this is the place for you. I'm a Virgo, so I *LOVE* organization. This store has pretty much everything to make me happy for the rest of my life...ways to organize my soup cans in the kitchen, laundry supplies, jewelry racks, closet organizers, and even wrapping paper and dish soap. Conveniently, there is a parking garage located adjacent to the store which will run you about $2/20 minutes, so shop fast! However, an uber friendly store employee WILL bring your full cart downstairs for you to load up your vehicle...what great customer service. Me likey. read more

Well, what it is is a store to get stuff so you can stuff your stuff into cool stuff and your house won't have quite so much stuff sitting out- just stuff with a lot of stuff in it. And there is just so much stuff to stuff stuff in to pick from! So much stuff to see & stuff to shop till you are stiff! I bought a 3 drawer dresser, (if you want to call it that.) The Mylar substance it is constructed of was pleasantly light to lug the three or four blocks back to my house. But it looks a little weird- a faux wood top to a plastic dresser, and the drawers aren't even opaque! (though they look that way, before you stuff your stuff into them.) What I would have expected to pay like 35 bucks for at Target or something, I get for 60 because it's ---The Container Store! Well, it beats having all that stuff just sitting there in cardboard boxes. read more

This store has a ridiculous level of customer service. I just hope they aren't doing some crazy brainwashing or Wal-Mart style company cheers to get the employees to act so nice. The first time I came here was to get some new trash can sets for the place so that we could have separate trash/recycling/compost cans rather than sorting through the grossness every trash day. So after being greeted at the door and directed to the giant section devoted to trash cans by another almost disturbingly cheerful employee, I pick out a bunch of cute little Karim Rashid designed cans in different colors for bedrooms and some bigger ones for the kitchen. My one complaint is that the prices are high on a lot of things here (as others have said, you can pay over $100 for a trash can), but if you avoid the specialty items and look for sales you get your money's worth. So at the checkout, I ask if we can just nest them inside the biggest can since I have to take them home on BART. The cashier stacks them all, and then pulls out the biggest paper bag I have ever seen and attaches a plastic handle across the top so I can carry everything with one hand. Apparently they have a whole arsenal of crazy bags behind that counter; when I came back and bought a laundry sorting rack (yes, this store will do that to you) which came in a long, narrow flatpack box, it was put in a long, narrow bag which fit it perfectly. read more

It was my first visit To the store and I wanted to know how it worked so I approached the first person I saw her name was Anne to help me. She explained how they can pull stock if you know what you want. I had a list, she checked stock, called Kim to verify stock, and explained how to pick up from loading dock/garage next door. When it was time to pay, I.wanted to use up a couple of Visa Gift cards with various amounts remaining. Anne was patient and walked me through each one and processed the payment seamlessly. Next she provided detailed instructions on hoe to access the parking garage and request my items be brought down. Once inside the garage you pick up the phone and it dials them directly. Within a few minutes a very nice young girl loaded my car and I was on my way. Very pleasant and efficient experience. I highly recommend this location. They always have the highest quality products in the business. read more
