I visited Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) on a Sunday afternoon. The staff greeted me and was very friendly and knowledgeable. One of the employees, perhaps the manager, described each of the 3 current exhibit. Entrance fee is free for Bank of America customers the first full weekend of the month. I was able to find free and convenient street parking on NE 8th Avenue. The 3 current exhibits are Leigh Gordon, Kanaval a chronology of Haiti's carnival; Dider William and the Victory Garden, which was the reason for my visit. The Victory Garden, in the museum's Paradise Courtyard, is an inspiration to find solutions to food scarcity. You are given a paper bag and encouraged to ship some herbs. Basil, culantro, tomatoes and oregano were just a few plants in the garden. Current hours, according to their website are Mon & Tue, closed; Wed. 12-7; Thur. - Sun. 12-5. Admission is $10 for adults, free for children under 12, veterans and North Miami employees and residents. I would plan on spending 1 -2 hours at the museum. I recommend a visit to MOCA read more

MOCA is an intimate museum, with usually 2 exhibits. You can be in and out within 30 minutes, get your art fix and go about your day. They're apart of the Bank of America "Museums on Us" program which means free admission for BoA cardholders first weekend of the month. Street parking isn't stressful since you're not there very long. I like the MOCA space a lot and stoked to see future exhibitions. Everyone was wearing masks, felt very safe. read more

This was another unexpected stop. But who can pass up an art museum? We came not knowing what this museum really had to offer. The current exhibit is featuring the "urban" artists of Port Au Prince, Haiti. Admission is $10 for adults and $3 for seniors. They also have special student rates. It is a small museum with open galleries. The art displayed covers a number of types of medium -- clay, beaded works, photographs, etc.. But one theme throughout was the eeriness of the art works. Many were scary. There were a number of skulls in the various pieces. A nurse in attendance told us they were real human skulls. And a museum employee confirmed that some of the bones are from relatives of the artist(s). This exhibit is only on view until August 11th. I have been wanting to check out MOCA. It is a very nice space, and staff are extremely kind. While there are two exhibitions, I did hope for more exhibits or a permanent collection. They have a great space, that could definitely be used more! But, either way it was an enjoyable experience to visit the museum. read more

MOCA beganin 1981 as the Center for Contemporary Art in a single gallery space. In 1995 they established a permanent collection and in 1996 relocated to it's current 23,000 square foot location in Little Haiti. The building was designed by African American architect Charles Gwathmey. In 2014 some members of the board decided to split off and opened the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami's Design District. They were able to take 200 works which was 30 percent of the museums collection with them. MOCA's mission to is to bring to the forefront little known artists. The museum has 700 pieces in it's permanent collection and it rotates 8 to 10 temporary exhibits a year. My friend and I were out exploring one day and sort of stumbled on this museum. I really love all art so I bought a ticket without really paying attention to what the current exhibit was. It turns out it is PÒTOPRENS: The Urban Artists of Port-au-Prince running until August 11. According to the literature provided by the museum Haiti is the only country to have been created from a slave rebellion. From the title of the exhibit I expected Haitian art which is perfectly fine but this was something darker. The first room was large sculptures mainly created from discarded items. The back room had pieces created from the artists dead relatives and pets. To put a finer point on it there were art pieces created out of real skeletons and it made me extremely uncomfortable. I tried to give it a chance but my friend took one step in the room and stepped right back out. After I got home I read the literature that I was given at the museum. Basically it talks about art from the different regions of Haiti. No where does it mention that the art is created from real dead people. I was provided that tidbit by the guard in the room. If I had known what the exhibit was I would have passed. I learned a lesson to pay more attention. I think the front desk should tell people what the exhibit contains. $10 was too steep for two rooms of art. I am all for supporting the arts but that was too much. I am interested in visiting the Institute of Contemporary Arts which offers free admission. read more

This museum was hard for our lyft driver to find. There was a $10 admission fee for non-north Miami residents. This place is really small and we went through everything in about 10 minutes. My cousins and I were not impressed at all and upset about wasting our money. There were a few pieces I liked but I would not recommend that anyone goes here. Don't get this place mixed up with the institute of contemporary art. This place is not located by anything and was far from south beach. read more

The MOCA museum is situated right at the crux of downtown North Miami on NE 125th street. It is between the city hall and the North Miami Police Department. MOCA strives to display and promote contemporary artistic pieces that have captured and created the picture of civilian lifestyles throughout the numerous decades. Recently, I had the pleasure to go and visit MOCA during their most current exhibit, the AfriCobra. MOCA makes itself accessible to the public through its multiple events and inexpensive pricing. They even going as far as offering free admission for NoMi (North Miami) residents and reduced prices for students and seniors. While the museum is small, its space is maximized to provide the visitors with enough painted canvases and woven pieces necessary to essentially 'paint the picture'. It's quiet and there are always employees available to assist in any questions that one may have. It took us about thirty minutes to navigate through the entire museum. I had a terrific time! The exhibit was powerful and moving. I felt that most of the pieces selected had a significant impact and provided us with an idea of what the perspective was like being a black person in the 60's, 70's. My dad and I frequently found ourselves in an engaged conversation about the diaspora, the civil arts movement, the reasoning behind the color choices used in each of these pieces and so on. I highly recommend anyone to visit MOCA and see the Africobra showcase as well as the other exhibits featured there because it promotes important discussions and helps to further inform many on crucial events! read more

Marielle Plaisir's installation, 'Acta Non Verba' occupies the entire main gallery. While I couldn't get into her paintings, her slave and Creole dresses -- made of white Tyveck paper, metal and lighted with LEDs -- glow beautifully as they hover from the ceiling. One of the untitled individual installations in this themed group, simply features twisting loops of rope wound with pieces of cloth. Beneath it this statement: "My dream is to recompose the world where there would be neither 'dominant' or 'dominated', where, in the kingdom I build, one could travel through both sides of the mirror." read more

From the monthly jazz to the Battle of the Bands and great exhibits like Sympathy for the Devil, this is one of the funnest museums in town. Although it's comparatively small, it packs a punch as far as its planning and exhibits. They also have good movies, lectures, and workshops including some for kids. They even offer an art summer camp for the kiddies. Sometimes they're a little extreme like telling writers they can't use pens inside the museum and handing us golf pencils?! But nothing is perfect. It's a little of the beaten path, but worth the trip. And there is a great coffee house across the street at the Luna Star Cafe. read more

Yeah it is relatively small, but they have brilliantly displayed exhibits, their curators really care about what they do and it shows - This place is quaint yet chic- We really enjoyed the Dali exhibit a while ago but have enjoyed concerts and other exhibits as well through the years. So I found out through Yelp there was going to be a concert at this museum so of course I had to have some of it. I love me some outdoor concerts everyone who knows me knows this. And I googled this person and definitely knew I would have a good time, invited my friend Ellen and he told me he knows the place across the street which is where we went afterwards you can check that yelp review also it was at the Luna star café it away back to this concert Dr. Ed Calle definitely did not disappoint, the music wasEverything I expected it to be. I am glad we stayed to the end because we got to meet him and his awesome percussionist #YareliaGandul she's totally bad ass. Why didn't get too hot even though I wore a denim jacket over my sundress you might want to bring a fan as it was quite humid and bring yourself a frozen water bottle too. I love this museum and it's programming. It's small, but filled with important art and experiences. And it's cheap and the staff is friendly and helpful. Plus there is free parking everywhere. The programs are great for adults and families. And they have a great teen program. The student artists put on a showcase during Jazz@MOCA. Currently the museum is exhibiting artwork from AfriCOBRA and it is incredible to finally see pieces I studied and admired in art school at Howard University. read more

MOCA. Not MOMA- for all the art snobs out there. Moca presents a great collection of contemporary works that include installation, videos and what I like to call flat works (photos, painting etc) The curator gives talks on Saturdays so you can hear from her mouth about the pieces themselves and how they form the show as a whole. I went during the should about Reality. It included videos that were sometimes riveting, funny and exploratory. The Elephant in the Room installation spoke volumes about the shows message in general. The set up is great, and they throw awesome parties. I went to the Bollywood event last year and had a great time. read more

Make sure you watch for exhibitions. Right now, it was a type photography that I didn't really like it all. Took me less than half an hour. Only interesting thing was a this room, that changed colors with the music. REALLY FUN, but that's it. I was surprised how small it was, and disappointed. I guess MOCA may be better when there are some exhibits, but when we went, the place was mostly empty space. I'd say about 10-15% of the large, warehouse-style building had any art in it at all! Fortunately, it was free...they give discounts for veterans, students, & certain businesses at different times. What art that was there was alright, but we looked at all of it...twice...& were still done in 15 min. Funnily, there were more security personnel than exhibits! ha I bet that if the staff got off their smartphones, they'd be able to book a lot more art/artists & even be able to get some attention for some local artists. read more

The look of the museum on the outside is nice. You'd think it would be full of great works by famous contemporary artists, but once you walk in, it's a bit different. We asked the woman behind the desk what there was to see. She directed us to the "temporary exhibit on the right" and to the "3 other works on the left." Um, are the 3 other works your permanent collection? Not only that, but the temporary exhibit was with Adult Content, and for any families with kids (of which I saw many there) I don't think this is the right exhibit to put, especially if it takes up 95% of the whole museum. We didn't bother buying tickets, so we just used their bathroom before heading out. Just walking to the bathroom, we passed right by the "3 other works." Well, I wish the museum simply had more works, it is a real waste of space in that nice building. read more

Love this little museum, super affordable and worth a little stroll. It is smaller than you'd expect from the outside but the exhibits pack a lot of punch. When I went the exhibit was AfroCobra an art movement full of black empowerment, black panther references, and tons of color. You can really take your time here and soak it in. My only complaint is the gift shop, they should have affordable trinkets from local vendors and artists. If your exhibit is about empowerment then your gift shop should be too! read more

The building is well constructed. I thin kthe layout completements the art work. The collection is well rounded. It does show you how the artist was creating the art and why. The staff was nice, some people where there trying to touch the art. and the staff had to tell them to stop. (of course you aren't supposed to touch the art.) Yesterday was not my first visit to this museum, so my review will be mixed. Although the building is beautiful and distinctly visible-- and certainly the price is right ($3/senior rate) -- finding the museum is dreadful. You can see it, but there are no signs directing you to parking, unless you drive around and around, which we did. Also, it is very difficult to determine whether the museum is even open! The entrance looks abandoned. The Wangechi Mutu exhibit was a lovely mix of African pieces which, we felt, had an Asian bent. However, the Virginia Overton exhibit was like a forgotten attic, emptied of most of its contents, save for a few non-related items. The best exhibit was the Mutu film. It was fascinating! I've seen other interesting exhibits in the past, and I'll go back, hoping to catch something new and exciting. read more

I can't believe how exciting this place is. From a distance, you can't tell that this small museum packs a knowledgeable entertaining punch. From walk-throughs to Figure Drawing Classes with some of Miami's finest art teachers there is always something new each month. There is also a great new exhibition every few months. To add a cherry on top, MOCA has hosted Art Basel opening along with Vanity Fair for the past couple of years. Membership is definitely affordable as well; only $30 for students, artists and teachers which is perfect for me. I'd definitely suggest it to both visitors and residents. read more

You can see everything in this museum in about 5 minutes. I love art but I just don't understand contemporary or modern art. I feel that anyone including my 10 year old can make these art. I just don't see the talent in these art pieces. One of the exhibit was an old piano bench with a cabbage patch kid sitting on it. The bench was on a floor mat with petals on it. I don't get it. The place is so small that the security guard following your every move makes you so uncomfortable that you wanna get the hell outta there. read more

My friends and I went to the free jazz performance and we really enjoyed it. Then we decided to go inside the museum...bad idea. I've lived in NY the last 8 years so I tend to compare everything to that. Which of course is unfair, since so many things in NY are incredible. For example, Museums. You can't compare Miami to NYC. Compared to NYC MOCA is bad. But, compared to the options here it is strictly ok. I do applaud their effort and good intentions. But the space is really just too small. You can view almost any collection in about 15-20 tops. They do a very good job of constantly bringing new collections constantly and of having good shows and events. Their mailings are also very informational and timely. It is a nice place to go to on a Saturday to check out some art for 30 minutes. But make sure you have plans after. My wife and I have been coming to Moca Miami for many years and have enjoyed approx 40 concerts, exhibits and an occasional special event here. The transition to new management over the past few years has not been too smooth. As for a global perspective on the art and music, we give Moca and unqualified excellent. The website is inconsistent. Call to check on what's happening before coming. Overall, the Jazz at Moca for sure, and the exhibits in general, have been world class in an enjoyable, change of pace setting. read more

Moca is a smaller museum but it is packed with charm and beauty. They do a great job of bringing great exhibits and very interesting Artists. They seem to be very ingratiated with the Community. There isn't really a Permanent collection but They do have an Interesting selection of art. I say that this lovely Gem of a place is worth the trip. I recently visited Miami and the MOCA was one of my destinations. Its a great spot. The art was incredible. Loved the original Keith Haring. I really don't understand the other reviewers. It is in fact contemporary art, so if you're expecting a bunch of pretty, old timey oil paintings you should probably skip this spot and look for a different museum. The Museum of Contemporary Art is a small exhibit. Because it is so small, the artist has full roam of the place, which is what sets the museum apart from others; however, the downside is that with the admission for students for three dollars or adults for five dollars, it only took around fifteen to twenty minutes to enjoy. Currently, the gift store is closed for about another week, which was disappointing. Right now, Rolando Pena's collection of the Black Gold in the museum is definitely worth checking out! You can't beat the price. I recommend that after leaving the museum, to walk around the area because there are artsy stores and galleries that add to the experience. read more

The AFRICOBRA exhibition during Basel 2018 brought together the founding artists from the African American artist collective that was founded in Chicago in the late 1960s. I was really pumped about checking this place out especially considering I get free entry Bc I'm a north Miami resident. My question to them is this... How will you give me back the 20 minutes of time I wasted there? Sure the art was ok. All of which took about 15 minutes to see (5 of which were spent using the bathroom) Also, can I be give back the horrible attitude of the staff? The only nice one there was the security guard. Hey! Lady supervising the hanging balls.... If your eyes rolled any harder they might fall out of your head. I visited the MOCA with my children for the Sunday Stories program. The kids enjoyed the free storytelling time and looking at the art together. We even did an art project. The Shop has a great kids section as well. Very creative! read more

This was my first visit here and I was more than disappointed. I was looking forward to the idea of a nice museum outside the heart of Miami and Wynwood. The move to Miami from art-filled, gallery-filled, museum-filled NYC has been going quite well -- Miami's up-and-coming art scene is interesting and vibrant -- until I visited the MOCA. I almost feel badly leaving such a bad review, but if it spares anyone from driving there and wasting any money at this "museum." To be fair, admission is only $5.00, but even at this price, it is too expensive. The exhibit was shockingly bad, curated poorly, and without a cogent explanation (a document that made no sense was provided). And, unfortunately, the staff there could not explain anything about what the exhibit was supposed to be about. Maybe this exhibit was the Autonomous Zones exception to the rule, but don't risk it. read more
