This was my 3rd/4th time at copper grouse and while the food is always excellent and the atmosphere is lovely, we were disappointed with our service. Now I get during covid things could be slower or off but it was beyond that. I decided on 3/5 stars bc our other experiences were good here. If this was my only experience it would have been 1 or 2/5. My mom ordered tea and her hot water was forgotten, not a big deal but when she remembered to bring it she said "I hope this is still hot" then walked away. It was not still hot and so my mom was left there with no drink. She decided to just switch to coffee to make things easier but it was awhile before the waitress came back. The waitress didn't write anything down which is fine except there were a lot of mistakes. My mom asked for Canadian bacon and got regular bacon; she asked for no whipped cream on her French toast and it came with it (bothers her stomach otherwise she would have taken it off and we had a long car drive ahead of us); toast for one of our friends was forgotten; my sister's omelet didn't come with what she asked for so she had it remade and it still was incorrect. Lastly, and the waitress wouldn't have known this but my dad passed away a few months ago and this was a trip to get away for all of us with the kids and a family friend. She kept referring to our family friend as "dad" which again isn't a big deal but he wasn't our dad and it was a bit odd to assume that. And again no way for her to know that but just a little odd to be saying that as well. In the end, nothing was taken off our bill. In fact she showed us the bill then said oh I forgot to add the drinks on, so she went back and added them. Just a bit disappointed in the experience and the end to our weekend. read more

Leaving 1 star for the lack of accommodating menu. Not one vegan nor vegetarian option at this place. Called the restaurant to inquire then made complaint to the manager who seemed to lack any concern of making future accommodations to diversify the menu. Considering that most restaurants in this day and age manage to have menus that have at least one meal that is vegan friendly - especially for a restaurant that is located in a hotel it is truly disappointing. If a chef has any talent they should be able to come up with an option. read more

Everything from the service to the food was stellar! Molly, our server, was personable, provided great recommendations and was so appropriately attentive. The cauliflower appetizer was incredible. The 3 of us couldn't decide on an entree because they all came so highly recommended. We picked the brick chicken, the scallops and the venison- and shared! It was heaven! The scallops had a vanilla parsnip sauce that was spectacular. The venison had a blueberry sauce and the brick chicken was full of spices and so juicy and perfect. December 9 2023 I experienced the worst breakfast of my life. I ordered the Eggs Florentine on the brunch menu. It came with two poached eggs on English muffins. One of the eggs was rockhard. The other was way undercooked, and what I would call snotty. The English muffin under the undercooked egg was burnt. I had a side of pork sausage, and when it arrived, it was incredibly dry. The other patrons I was dining with questioned if it was chorizo, I said I will ask. The waitress who was amazingly friendly and kind told me it was the pork sausage. I told her it was very dry. She immediately told me she would take it off the bill. I also had coffee which tasted very good, but the coffee cups they use cooled the coffee down very quickly and my coffee was always too cold. This was my friend's 40th birthday, and we were very disappointed for a place that was supposed to be so high class. I will say that the restaurant staff and surroundings made it a wonderful place to hang out and catch up and visit for this celebration. read more

I was seated next to a large party even though there were many empty tables. I asked to move - my waitress said no. The group was rudely standing over me and one put his ass into my drink glass because he was oblivious. I asked my waitress to move and she said no... when she came back I couldn't even hear her talk so I just got up to leave. She quickly found me a table. I ordered an appetizer and two small plates. They brought the soup and before I had taken the 2nd bite, they delivered the other two dishes. There was no room on the table. It was laughable. The manager never came to my table even though I asked to speak to him. The food was average. The drink was also average. I ate at the Reluctant Panther the night before and the meals could not have been more different... I'd suggest choosing another of the many great restaurants in town. read more

Recently visited for brunch. My husbands dish of duck confit hash was quite special, nicely seasoned, well presented with perfectly poached egg and rich Hollandaise. I have taken off one star though for my dish of Croque Madame. It was not as hot as I'd have liked, and the use of sourdough bread made the sandwich tough, it was actually hard to cut through (as it is a knife-&-fork type dish), I think the topping of Mornay sauce was over-broiled. My Bloody Mary had a strong unaccustomed flavor of garlic, not my personal preference because it stood out a bit too much. The service was very good, ambience very very nice. Yahoo for Wagyu!! BEST burger EVER!!! While staying at the Kimpton Taconic hotel in Manchester, VT, I decided to try the hotel restaurant, the Copper Grouse. Made a dinner reservation to make sure seating would be available. The service was exceptional and my meal, a Waygu beef burger was to die for!!! Perfectly cooked and nicely presented. I was staying at the Kimpton Taconic and popped in to see if the Copper Grouse was able to accommodate my dietary restriction. The hostess was so nice and friendly and went back to talk to the kitchen staff. I could hear their entire conversation and the manager and kitchen were incredibly rude and dismissive. It's totally fine if a restaurant can't accommodate, I was politely asking in advance, during a slow time at the restaurant. Again, the hostess was so friendly and polite, but after hearing how the manager and kitchen reacted to me asking if the pasta could be made without meat and dairy, I just avoided their restaurant throughout my entire stay. I'm glad I did. I went to the Silver Fork and the Reluctant Panther and had amazing meals there instead. read more

My wife and I were staying in Manchester and made reservations to eat here on a Tuesday night. We looked at the menu and knew going in that this place was expensive so our expectations were high. We arrived and were promptly seated outside as requested. Although the chairs were comfortable, they didn't seem to be designed for the table. We could not get the chairs close enough to the table because of the table legs sticking out and we had to lean in to the table to eat, which became physically uncomfortable during the course of our dining. We ordered our drinks, mine being a Tito martini and my wife chose a glass of red wine. When I got my martini I couldn't believe the tiny size of it. First it came in a small vermouth style glass and it wasn't even filled to the top. If there was ever such a thing as a kid size martini than this was it, literally four sips and I finished it. When I had the chance I mentioned to our server and the manager that this was the smallest martini I ever was served. The manager claimed that it was a normal pour and that it would have filled a martini size glass. Now I have been drinking martinis for over thirty years and I can tell you that this could not be true. I may have been born yesterday but I wasn't born today. The martini came to $15 and was a rip off. My wife got a fair pour of wine which should have been $12 and I ordered the same wine for my meal, however; I didn't notice that the server charged us for a different wine at $13. We had the Burrata with Speck ham as an appetizer to share. The Burrata had the right creamy texture and paired well with the ham and sliced tomatoes that accompanied it. The portion was smaller than expected at a price of $17. We both ordered the roasted salmon as our entrée at $35. Here is where the service slowed down. Forty minutes after we finished the appetizer there was still no sign of our entrée and our server had to go to the kitchen to check. Our entrees finally arrived after an hour of waiting. It was a beautiful night to dine outdoors so we didn't complain. The salmon was a small piece and was good but not spectacular for the price. We finished our meal with the berry cobbler ala mode. The cobbler was $12 and was good and enough for two to share but the price wasn't justifiable. In addition it arrived with the ice cream mostly melted, so it was pretty much like having cream on top instead of solid ice cream. The wind up is this meal for two people cost close to $200 with tip. This is pretty steep for a regular restaurant. I don't mind paying if the quality of the food, drink and service provided is superior or above average, but it wasn't at the Copper Grouse. It's just average with above average prices and I felt somewhat ripped off. read more

The drinks were great. However I was quite disappointed in the service and the balance of the menu. The charcuterie board was a joke and grossly overpriced as was the bread basket. The entrees were OK, but took a little over an hour to get them on a not overly busy night. For a $230 bill for a family of four, the value was just not there. read more

They are not ready yet. Last night we did dinner for ten in two separate tables. The food was only fair and the service was a disaster. The lone waitress was trying to handle the entire patio and she was not up to the task. Lots and lots of mistakes and unbelievably slow service. Now is obviously a time to be understanding, but Covid should not mean that a restaurant forgets the basics of how to serve a meal. (e.g. we never got ketchup for our burgers despite several attempts; check had mischarges on it, orders were all screwed up after being rechecked FOUR times, etc) CG has been one of our favorites but they have a lot of work to do before they should consider themselves ready to serve the public PS. We did takeout from them a week ago which was very good... so maybe the problems are with the reopening to the public read more

We recently stayed at The Taconic Inn and were able to have dinner here Saturday night and then drinks at the bar Sunday late afternoon. We weren't super pleased with our experience Saturday night. We had a late reservation and when our server did approach our table she said- The only special we have left is ...". It felt like we were somehow being scolded for coming in so late. Our wing appetizer was on the table before our drinks. Dinner menu is small- not a lot of choices. My steak was pretty charred on the outside- which I hate but my husband likes so he ate my steak. He enjoyed it. We weren't asked about dessert- I'm assuming due to our late reservation the kitchen was closing. However when we left- the place was still half full. Sunday night at the bar was great. Bartenders both know their stuff and can tell are passionate about their craft. Creative cocktail list and very efficient and friendly. Each drink made perfectly. Such a joy to sit and watch the game among others with good drinks and company. read more

We are vegan and especially loved the cauliflower tempura, butternut squash soup and truffle fries - unfortunately, the broccoli and carrot side dishes were really underwhelming and bland. The test of a bartender is how do they execute a classic cocktail, today it was the Old Fashioned. Well done modern interpretation of the Mad Men era staple. Spicy, smooth and the glow of orange. Had the parsnip and spring onion soup to start, it was fresh and flavorful. Perfect starter for a late spring dinner. Pan seared sea scallops in a cauliflower purée, charred Brussel sprouts and roasted cauliflower for dinner were prepared to perfection. Wings were crispy and perfectly spiced. Dinners were less than good. Lamb shank was super tender, but on a bed of weird tasting polenta. God the signature burger but the cheese was not melted. Twice in one day. We check into The Taconic Hotel in Manchester. Our room is not ready, okay we go to have lunch at the Copper Grousse, the hotel restaurant. Horrible lunch. Literally a burned chicken sandwich. Leather like texture. The waiter and manager agree, comped the whole lunch. Whatever. Dinner Reservation ( for three months ) . We show up, give it a second chance. Failed! Charged for food I never got, the pasta tasted like a lumpy pile of glump. Hello chef, use some pasta liquid and parm to bring your dish together, it's not rocket science. Your skills are really less than second rate. Do you know how to cook, or do you watch too much Food TV and think you can cook. Chef, shame on you. Just quit, your food is the worst. Our server blamed her bad timing and forgetfulness on you, but I'd expect that from a local no personality Vermont clod hopper. Thanks for ruining what was supposed to be a celebration. Instead, you delivered first rate crap twice. My hotel bill will be around 3k, @ Kimpton and @ Taconic, train your staff to be better. At least the room is adequate, so far. read more

Very good vibe, dog, people friendly :). Cool bar scene outside, more elegant, people-watching dining options outside on the porch. We got a table for four, a bevy of appetizers, drinks (maybe too much!), and entrees. I really like a lot of the plates being served in cast-iron pans, etc, very rustic and fun. The wait staff is pleasant, but probably stretched thin, as everywhere in Vermont. It's a bustling scene, more vibrant than the Equinox, good location in town, etc. We had to wait a little while for our food, but we understood. The food here is amazing. Service is always fantastic. My husband and I love coming here, sitting outside on the porch is the best. It's very relaxing. The hote itself is soo beautiful! as i've said before in my last review! Would definitely stay a night here! haven't had the chance yet! But this restaurant is one of our favs! The food is always consistent, fresh and executed well. Variety of choices and the menu changes seasonally. Locally grown vegetables make the dishes superb! My husbands beef brisket was soo flavorful, melted in your mouth, best we ever had. My pasta was one of the best fresh pasta dishes i've ever had. Better than any italian place in new york. The farm veggies were soo crisp and fresh, yum! (snap peas, heirloom tomatoes and spinach) the cream sauce was very flavorful and not too heavy. The pasta was to die for! Soo fresh and cooked to perfection. My only disappointment are the drink prices. I don't remember our drinks being so expensive the last time we came. I remember it being reasonable but this time i felt like they upcharged them. The waitress was new (you can tell) maybe she rang it up wrong? not pointing any fingers...... but i'll drink at home before i come next time. But it saddens me to not be able to enjoy a drink there. My hendricks gin and tonic was $16! then i got a gin martini ... the same price? i was expecting more like $8-11 for a g&t and maybe $11-14 for the straight up martini? We had a horrible experience here. First and foremost, the service was incredibly slow. Not the waitress's fault really, she actually ended up being the one good thing about the experience, but it took a solid 20 minutes just to get a drink order. Food took over an hour for lunch. Management here is very bad. We asked quietly and politely about having someone move their chair because the waitstaff was having a hard time getting through. We did this discreetly to the manager. He then returned and quite publicly made a scene about us moving our table if we would like to, even though the request had nothing to do with helping us and was for the sake of their staff. We told him we were fine, to which he responded, "Well clearly you're not fine, so do you want to move?" We replied twice that we were indeed fine and he continued with this passive-aggressive attitude in front of the entire restaurant. This whole scene went on much longer than it should have. When brought up later, we were told we were harassing an elderly woman. For what? Quietly telling the manager that his waitstaff -- which was already very slow -- was complaining about needing to get around her? We saw the same guy picking his nose later on which is just unsanitary. Once the manager was gone and the bill came, the waitress took a lot off our bill and apologized on behalf of her unruly manager. Even she was embarrassed about it. So just know that for when they inevitably reply to this review. Long story short, Manchester is a small town but there's a lot of better places to go than here. read more

In the Taconic Inn in the quaint-ish non outlet mall part of Manchester Vermont you'll find The Copper Grouse a white table cloth restaurant that served up a great evening despite the mandated covid theater restrictions. The fire pit on the side of the hotel was occupied with people enjoying the evening when we arrived and was a great entree to the place. Through the hotel lobby you'll find TCG. Fewer tables, masks until we "sat" at our high top where smaller patrons are taller sitting than standing, etc etc. But rules are rules. The hippies that run the state seem to have morphed into Prep School headmasters. Ok enough grousing back to the Grouse. We made reservations and were seated immediately along what usually would be bar space. The dining area is very pretty with a large fireplace and the inn meets upscale hunting lodge decor tastefully presented. Our server was attentive if stretched a bit thin despite the room being 1/2 full and drinks were a good pour but should be for what they get for drinks. Oddly enough for a cocktail atmosphere there were no blue cheese olives for my martini?!. Ok it ain't Manhattan. We ordered the charcuterie board to start that was excellent if a bit light on bread. And the roasted pepper ap was awesome. For our mains the Al H crew had the Pork chop with polenta (Me), Butternut squash ravioli that my sister HH said was great and Teen H splashed out for the swordfish to very positive reviews. After dinner we split 2 bread puddings that were like slabs...huge and great. Benedictine and a coffee and it was off to food coma land. Manchester is a tourist town and your supposed to leave your money there. So check out this stylish mountain gem. It's well worth the price. The Copper Grouse......go! read more

Wife and I came here with our daughter for brunch and couldn't be more disappointed. The server was polite and seemed to be nice, but she was a terrible server that didn't seem to be capable of handling her workload. The bigger issue was the food. We ordered 'steak and taters' and their smoked salmon bagel. The stake was soft and well cooked, but had absolutely no visible seasoning and no discernible taste. The smoked salmon bagel was also mostly tasteless and the bagel was so greasy that it was actually shiny. Lastly was my bloody Mary. I like them spicy and normally wouldn't complain about a little extra pepper but wow, the thing tasted like nothing but pepper and was actually hard to drink. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone wanting good food, as I don't think you can find it here. read more
