There were no issues with the service or the ambiance. The service was friendly, and the setting was rustic and welcoming. The issue was with the food. I expected the onion soup to have a rich beef broth, but it had very little flavor. The fat on the porchetta pinwheel wasn't sufficiently rendered, so about half the dish was just inedible. The mashed potatoes on the side were pasty. To offer this quality of food at the current price point is inexcusable. I am just floored small town in Vermont but the BEST burger I have ever had. No condiments what so ever just meat, bun, lettuce,tomato, and onion. We stopped at this restaurant on our first night in town and it did not disappoint. I would give more stars if I could. The restaurant is a bit on the rustic side but it is filled with charm and the dining is fine dining. The first floor is a dining area along with their full bar. We sat in the main dining area next to their large fireplace. It was nice to have our dinner with a fire right next to us. For starters we had the duck and bacon wontons. They were absolutely delicious. For our entrees I had the NY Strip served with vegetables and a garlic butter. The steak was cooked at a perfect medium-rare temperature. The steak was delicious and tasted even better with the garlic butter. My girlfriend had the salmon. The salmon was perfect. To end the night we had dessert which was a mixed berry tart with ice cream. The tart was a perfect way to end our meal. The next time we are here we will definitely be back. Amazing space with a beautiful view can make it feel a little like you are dining in Ye Olde New England, though of course you wouldn't be dining in a barn, anyhoo I love the feeling of stepping into another era that I get here. This is a late review from Mothers Day, 2025. My family all live local to The Barn, and go for dinner quite often, and usually have a good experience, not this time. My wife and I have been bringing my parents to The Barn for mothers day brunch for the past 4 years, or so. We have never had one complaint, until now. While pricy, its nice to treat them to something, they wouldnt do for themselves. That being said, we were pretty disappointed with the food, and service. First, 3 rounds of drinks through the entire meal, and had to get our own straws, even asking our server for them. Second, crab cakes were a huge disappointment. The serving was 1 and a half crab cake, they actually served a crab cake cut in half, after cooking. Screams CHEAP!!!! Third, my wife ordered the chicken and waffles. The waffles were way over cooked, and snapped like a potato chip. The chicken was border line burnt on the outside, and not even close to being cooked on the inside. I brought all of these issues to the attention of or server, she didnt care, and we were told, regarding the food, that how the cooks serves it, with ne resolve to make it right for the customer. I emailed this to the web Site email a week ago with ZERO RESPONSE??? I am a person that grew up in the area and still have a lot of family in the area. We often come back to the area and will be moving back full time soon. We ate their last night (sat2-21) and I was truly stunned by the experience. We know mark (old owner) and was glad to see when he was able to sell the location to you guys and move on. I assumed that the quality and experience would be very consistent since you have been there for some time. We had 6 people Sat upstairs even though we generally like to be downstairs. Here is a Run down of the night. No one to greet and seat us. It looked like there were basically 2 servers upstairs. The one girl just walked by us without even acknowledging that we were standing there. Probably took 7minutes or so to be greeted and seated. Seemed longer when you are ignored. We were there early so the room was not at all busy. Drinks- first round took too 35 minutes to get (bad start- we like to drink). Salads then came maybe 50 minutes into being sat. Entrees were very very long. We mainly had steaks 5 of the 6 items. ALL cooked to med well. Very dry. All were ordered from rare to med rare. No one ever came by to ask how the steaks were cooked. We were already 2 hours into the dinner so no one wanted to wait for a recook. Ran totally out of drinks every round with no one asking for a refill. We had to chase down the server to spend more $$$. We eventually did have 3 rounds. The one gentleman paid the entire bill so I didn't even see the total but it had to be over $600 for all. All steaks, some apps and 3 drinks each. Seems like staffing issues in front and would guess kitchen too. The other issue was there was zero mgt on the floor monitoring or helping with anything. The staff was just doing whatever they wanted with no direction. We would like to see you do well and support you guys as we did mark for years. Looking forward to a response. Thanks read more

Food, atmosphere and service met here and we had a lovely dinner for Father's Day. So the story goes that this Mack barn was a working barn for decades, perhaps millennia when two women bout the place inn1972 and refurbished it as a food establishment. For many years people travelled far and wide to come here. I don't think the original owners are still in operation there but they did a heck of a job on making this a true Vermont New England feeling food and tavern establishment. We ate outside which was beautiful. Good portions, great service and ambiance galore. Check out the 30-40' fireplace in told the woman built themselves. Nice job ladies. I'd hire you for that alone. They say that all the stone is local, and they'd pay kids in the area to bring them the stone. Regardless of folklore or reality, check this place out. Rustic, classy, fun and good food. I had worked with one of the (I believe) owners, Le Ann, to have a celebratory dinner after my son's elopement style wedding. We live in NH and The Barn was chosen based on reviews and the owner of our Airbnb recommendations. Le Ann was amazing and quick to offer suggestions on the menu, flowers and asked questions to really understand what we wanted. Le Ann and I spoke about 4 times via phone. We were a party of 18 adults and two children, our experience was exactly what we were looking for. They made us a huge beautiful charcuterie board, which was delicious. I always liked this place from years ago and still would recommend it if you want a nice atmosphere and simple food. We Had a wonderful server who was Taking care of the whole dining area on a Sunday night and it was fairly busy and she could t have been nicer. My first wine was not drinkable and she took it back with no problems. We had a cauliflower app that I enjoyed a lot and some fish for my husband and I can't remember what I had but it was fine. Highlights: We loved the diverse array of cocktails! There was something for every type of liquor drinker, and if not, a lovely selection of beer or non-alcoholic beverages to choose from. My favorite was the painkiller and their spin on a whiskey old fashion. The loaded potato skins were in full tasty throttle! Filled with bacon, chives, butter and cream... they were everything you want and need in an appetizer. Finally, the rolls. They had this amazing crispy crust yet were a soft fluffy pillowy texture inside! I'm still dreaming about smearing butter over them. So good. The restaurant was cold, we had to wear our coats the whole time. We waited an hour and 20 minutes for our food and it was cold. When we complained, the waitress offered to have the food reheated. Reheating Salman and shrimp only dries the seafood out making it worse. Manager brought the check for our appetizer, no apology just excuses. We had dinner this weekend, it had been awhile since we have eaten at the barn, we are locals. The prior experience wasn't great as the quality of the food was meh. Wanted to give it another try so we headed down, sat at the bar and ordered burgers. (the owner was our server and was tending bar) We arrived at 5:26 it was 6:35 before we got our food. I watched other people enter the tavern and be seated and food served while we continued to wait. A couple seated next to us made a comment to us about feeling guilty about eating knowing they arrived and ordered after us. The owner (who I've been told is a good guy) watched us wait - avoided our end of the bar at all costs except to toss a basket of potatoe chips at us and thank us for being patient. 25 minutes later .... still no dinner. We kindly asked a server passing by if we could get our check. She proceeded to tell the owner/bar tender and suddenly burgers finally appeared. It was clear to us that he waited to put in our order, why I have no idea. His avoidance and lack of hospitality was likely because he knew we were annoyed. I tried to flag him down several times for the check to leave but he wouldn't gain eye contact what so ever. Never asked if we'd like another drink while we wait. You'd think the chips were a nice gesture unless you saw the demeanor to which he served them. I didn't want fries with my burger so I order green beans but when we were served there was broccoli on my plate instead. I spoke up when he dropped the burgers in front of my son and I and told him that this was the worst service I had ever had. He didn't seem to care and started making excuses "the kitchen was backed up" my reply, "well, apparently not for all these people who came in after us and were served" - Then he said "well you know they're burgers".... what the hell does that mean? Yes, I said EXACTLY they are burgers, they should have been out 15 minutes after ordering. I then expressed that I had ordered green beans and his reply was (now this is the owner remember) "Well the kitchen must have been out of green beans" Hmmmm, we'll don't you usually let the patron know and give them the option? I guess not. The icing on the cake was his passive attitude and lame excuses. Not to mention a $24 burger that was really pretty lame. In full honesty if it's a burger you want go to Southside or even 5 guys for that matter either place makes a pretty damn good burger with better service for less. In my opinion what should have happened was, I am so sorry you waited so long, please allow me to comp you one of your meals or at least half of one. Nope! I've heard he treats his regulars pretty good but it's tough to become one if there is no reason to return. read more

Driving back from Lake George and was fascinated with the outdoor decor as the black stained barn gives it that appeal of a rustic farm to table like restaurant. Although we didn't have reservation, we were seated pretty quickly. Love the charm and barn atmosphere of the place, but only wished the food matched the setting. I got the 10 ounce NY strip steak $31 and while it was cooked to perfection of medium rare, it lacked sauce. I added sautéed mushroom for a dollar more. I just wished the mushroom and the vegetable sides were a lot more warmer. I opted for the bake potato and that was super hot and yummy. My wife got the duck sausage with pulled pork and white rice. The sausage was really scrumptious but the pulled pork was dry and the rice was soggy. That was not a hit in her eyes and she too help her dish could have been warmer. My son got the meatloaf entree $21 and I think out of all of us, he enjoyed his meal the most. They split a cheesecake with peanut butter and chocolate for dessert and they really liked it. All in all, we had high expectation for this place and only wished the dishes were warmer and that they hit the mark. But for today, it was a bit disappointment. read more

Could use more parking, people were parked along the road on the steep hill. Definitely make reservations. I didn't expect it to be as busy as it was at 5:30pm. Started with a sweet potato coconut bisque from the specials menu as well as the cheese sampler. The bisque was good, but the cheese sampler stood out. Presented on a barn shaped cutting board, there were dried figs, apple slices, some sort of amazing jelly and crackers along with 4 types of cheese. This sounded a bit pricy to me($12,) but was very good and worth the price. My husband got a salad and a pasta dish with chicken. He said the salad was fine, there was not much chicken on the main course and the pasta was very al dente(which is fine with him,) flavor was good. I got an angel hair pasta special with sun dried tomatoes and a big ball of soft cheese on the top. My pasta was cooked perfectly. The dish had great seasoning. I also tried their cider on tap: Citizen Cider. Was quite dry, but nice, it grew on me:) Served ice cold in a pint glass. My husband got the draft root beer, quite good. About half way through our meal, the power went out. There were big storms raging through the area. It was still light enough outside and there were enough windows in the dining area that we weren't left in absolute darkness. The staff took it in stride and were providing paper credit card receipts and taking credit card info down on paper. It did take longer to pay because of this, but a delay was to be expected under the circumstances. Overall, the price was delightfully lower than I expected($60ish without tip for the 2 of us, considering we got drinks, appetizers and the like.) My dish was the priciest($17). Service was quite good considering how packed they were and the power outage. The repurposed barn interior is very cool. We would come back when in the area! read more

What an amazing jewel! From the outside, it really does not give it justice. Just a black barn. But inside, beautiful wood decor and cozy. We ordered the Buddha bowl (salad full of beets, carrots, cabbage, avocado and quinoa) so healthy! Also got the burger, which my husband said it was one of the best burger he's had and with fresh Vermont cheddar cheese. To top off, we have local vanilla ice cream with pure Maple syrup. This restaurant is in a very large old barn with wide plank wooden floors and a huge stone corner fireplace. There is a Tavern on the lower level and also outdoor seating. The music is nice and unobtrusive, there are cloth napkins and tablecloths adding to the classy feel and atmosphere. I like their succinct menu, generous portions and thrifty prices. They do steaks very well and also good Salads. The Tiramisu and Creme Brule were house made and perfect. We also enjoyed their selection of beverages. My only peeve is that they charged for refilling the soft drink, since the rest of the table ordered alcohol, but this didn't harm the positive experience. When our dinner plans fell through last minute, the concierge at the Equinox resort recommended that we try out the Barn in Pawlet. I'm glad our dinner plans fell through as this is a great restaurant. There's plenty of parking and it's a little hard to get to (because they don't have an address per se and I was hoping to just put it into my GPS and be on my merry way), but trust me this place is worth all the trouble. You can't miss it as it is literally a huge barn on Route 33. It's got a very cozy feel to it even though it's huge with two separate dining rooms. The host was quick to seat us (even though we didn't have a reservation) and our smiling server appeared quickly rattling off their specials of the day. I had the french onion soup which was divine (the same cant be said about my breath afterwards however). The rolls they served was a perfect accompaniment. I had the roasted duck as an entree and my friend had the filet mignon with mushroom sauce. Both our entrees were fabulous, I loved the duck which was marinated in a really nice sauce (I have no clue what it was). The filet mignon was perfectly cooked and the sauce was great. Oh and as a side dish get their vegetables with maple-dijon vinaigrette (the vinaigrette is amazing!). The best part of this entire meal was the price.I was pretty surprised when I saw the check. Entrees were only $12! I don't really understand how this restaurant makes a profit or even breaks even but as a customer, I think it's great that prices are so low. Definitely go here if you are near the Pawlet area. I can't wait till I go back to Manchester to go here and all the other wonderful places I discovered on our weekend getaway from Boston. read more

My girlfriend and I went on vacation to Wells the 4th of July. We planned on going to a nice restaurant once during our stay on Little Lake. We did some researching to find a nice restaurant. This Barn popped up on our searches and it was close to where we were staying. So I made a reservation for Friday for 7pm on Wednesday. The place looked like a picturesque place to have dinner at. All week we were looking forward to going to dinner at this restaurant. We arrived at 6:40 so we were a little early. The hostess said our table wasn't quite ready and offered us to wait, or go to the tavern and have a drink. We went and sat down and ordered some drinks. It was almost 7:30 when they came to sit us for dinner. We were a little perturbed because we had made a reservation for 7, what's the since of making a reservation for a table when they don't have one ready for you? We had noticed there were quiet a few empty tables when we had arrived. We ordered an appetizer, the duck won tons, which were excellent. We had ordered dinner right after this, and by 8:30 we still didn't have our dinner yet. We were both very hungry by this time and the service was not by any means very good at all. The waitress had come back once to check on us once, but didn't really let us know why we hadn't received our dinner yet. The owner had walked by us also, checked on us once but didn't let us know why we hadn't received any dinner yet. Long story short, we decided to leave, we were hungry and this was taking way to long for our dinners. I paid for what we had eaten and drank, The owner tried to apologize but it was very hollow sounding, He finally said that the tickets had gotten mixed up in the kitchen, but why not come to our table and tell us this? Sounded like a likely excuse. He said our dinners were ready when we were leaving and offered to let us take them with us, but we were beyond being impressed with this restaurant. We had waited all week to have a nice dinner and were very disappointed with what we ended up choosing. The service was ok, and the whole point of making a reservation is to reserve a table to sit at. 1 1/2hrs and still no dinner for a table of two is a little long in my eyes. read more

My wife and I have been coming here for years. We consider the Barn a great place for dinner. Nice atmosphere, good food at a good value. Beautiful drive up the Mettowee Valley from Dorset or Manchester. Upstairs is the dining room, loft-like space. Roaring fire in field stone fireplace in winter, awesome views of mountains in Summer and Fall. Staff is very pleasant and aim to please.
