I only go to this store since it's across the street from my house, but I have to say the main management/owner or whatever he is has a terrible attitude. Has recently given my friend issues and today on Christmas I'm trying to purchase a pack of backwoods He handed me a stale pack I felt them through bag (hard and veiny) I asked him to get me one from the back of the box since they were softer and usually fresher. He refused and said that they're all the same things and I have to get the pack that he gave me thought about it but for 11$ and I can't give an opinion ? lol I left, I would not recommend them at all for smoking utilities just get your alcohol here. Pretty reasonable for a neighborhood liquor store in Navy Yard. I went in expecting really high prices so I when I saw it was only $1-$2 more than I normally pay for liquor I was relieved. I did not look at the wine selection or higher end liquor so that could be an entirely different story when it comes to pricing. Harry's is my neighborhood shop, and I have always appreciated that it is well laid out. The shop isn't huge but I find that it does not need to be--they always have what I'm looking for. There is a refrigerated section toward the back right, in case you have guests coming over and need to grab something that is already cold. But for wine purists, Harry's has a particularly nice array of bold, tannic reds, along with the other usual suspects. Over on the side, close to the cash register, there is a small aisle that has mixers, juice, etc. This has come in handy in a pinch when I needed some pineapple juice! I've always found the prices to be fair as well. They also have wine or spirit tastings on Friday evenings (these aren't happening during the pandemic, I think, but they used to happen). It's nice because I learned about some locally produced gin that I probably would never have learned about. No complaints from me! read more

High markups, cramped store, and a seeming disdain for many of its customers and neighborhood residents leaves Harry shy of its promise. So until a few months ago, my Harry's gripes were generally that some of their prices (though not all) could have a noticeable markup. Also, it can be cramped and inconvenient to walk around the store because the aisles are narrow and packed, it can get a few customers, and some of the items are really high up on shelves. However, a few months back, during the federal shutdown, Harry's weekly e-mail came with a "Shutdown Special." I thought maybe it was a discount offer for federal employees and contractors going through the shutdown - as other businesses in the area offered - but it was just some weak sale. Harry's used the shutdown, and the financial difficulties many of its own customers were experiencing, as a cheap promotion ploy. I e-mailed Harry's about it to let them know they may have missed how insensitive the sale name comes across , but got no response. Harry's claims in its e-mail it seeks feedback but when you provide it, they don't respond. Honestly, when you're in a neighborhood with federal agencies and federal employees, and you use the shutdown as a joking title for some ordinary sale it feels exploitative at worst, insensitive at best, towards many of your customers. That they were unapologetic about it left me with serious qualms about shopping there again. read more

This business doesn't have a posted returns/exchanges policy, which empowers the employees to jerk around customers.  The owner, Savita, incorrectly claimed (or perhaps gaslit me) that returns/exchanges of bottles of alcohol are illegal in DC. The guys who work here are also rude and egotistical. I bought some bottles of alcohol, club soda, and tonic water on a Thursday and came back the next day return them.  They initially said they only did exchanges rather than returns, but I couldn't figure out on the spot what to exchange them for.  I came back the following day, knowing what I wanted, and the middle-aged manager with the moustache refused to do an exchange, saying I had wasted his time the previous day and "lost my chance" when I left the store.  He shut down communication, saying I could "take it up with the owner" on Monday. It's like he has a god complex, along with disdain for customers. The employee who wears a Nats cap was similarly brusque and dismissive. The one-star reviews of another one of the owners' businesses, Eye Street Cellars, indicate similar concerns about rude employees as well as discrimination against African Americans. read more

I'm not going to lie, moving from Florida, my husband and I got a serious wake up call on how Virginia has state regulations. We had a major culture shock in not being able to buy our wine and our liquor in the same place. Say no more, Harry's is 100% the best spot in DC with a massive selection. My husband is a whiskey drinker and I a vodka, and this place has huge selections of both and more! Their wine selection is also huge and even a refrigerated area for the seltzer's. Update. I received a message from the store owner and I stand firmly by my review. There are plenty of unreasonably priced liquor stores in the DC area, however this is the only one that refuses to give any prices over the phone calling it "sensitive information" what a joke, it's not asking for a name and Social security number. Be assured that any business who refuses to give you a price one the phone knows that by telling you, you won't bother to stop in. As much as they "reserve the right" not to share that information, I reserve the right to let patrons know about my experience. read more

I've been shopping here for years and it's generally been ok if overpriced but that's living in a city. However, recently the clerk was so rude to an unhoused Black man telling that "his kind was not welcome and was stinking up the shop." This was not true. This man came in, made his purchase and politely defended himself, saying he had washed up before entering and was between housing. No one deserves that kind of treatment, shame on that clerk and this business for this behavior. You don't know someone's situation and to judge in such a rude manner is abhorrent. Bring your business elsewhere, that kind of intolerance is not what this city is about. Absolutely disgusted with this behavior and hope the owner holds employees accountable. read more

This is a convenient liquor shop next to the stadium. It was also very conveniently across from the air bnb apartment we had rented while visiting DC. We wanted to try out a local beer, so we asked the employee for a recommendation, and he said he didn't really drink beer, but we should try Coors? Wow...really!? Yeah, of course I've heard of Coors, and it's definitely not a local beer, nor should that be anyone's recommendation ever. Horrible, horrible, horrible customer advice. You'd expect the employees to have a little bit of knowledge about their products. The selection was decent and prices were alright, but slightly high. Harry's will have what you are looking for, and a lot more! This place always seems to busy, and stocks tons of hard to find craft beer, which many of the corner stores in this area do not. Friday and Saturday you can find them having a few different tastings in the store. They are always willing to recommend something to you. Who should shop here: Anyone interested in top-shelf spirits; anyone looking to set up a terrific shot tub for a party; anyone who's out of olives, maraschino cherries, or pearl onions; anyone looking to drink away his sorrows or celebrate his victories. Harry's Reserve is now my liquor store. There are probably four or five "liquor stores" closer to me, none of which measure up to the quality and service Harry's offers. I gladly make the drive of a few more blocks. I spent close to $750 in liquor here for a couple of parties earlier this year and would do it again. Note that I bought a lot-lot-lot of liquor for these events; Harry's prices are in line with other liquor stores, and on top of that, they have items that you won't find easily. Two kinds of absinthe, a wide range of flavored vodkas (helllloooo, birthday cake shots), carefully curated bottles of scotch, bourbon, rum (release the Kraken!), tequila, and gin, and pretty much any kind of mixer you'll need. The wine selection is also carefully curated. The wines available are good for both pairing with food and drinking a glass alone. The selection is as wide as any typical liquor store (keeping in mind that no one will compare to a warehouse-style place like Total Wine). The beer selection is limited because of the space required for coolers. That's not the fault of Harry's, though. Now stop reading reviews and head to New Jersey Avenue. read more

Whether I am at the Capitol Hill location on Penn Ave, or at their flagship store here on New Jersey, this place is first rate all the way! If you want another bottle of Barefoot red blend, you can get that anywhere in the District. Seriously. With new places like Harris Teeter popping up everywhere, you can't throw a stone without hitting a bottle of cheap plonk on a shelf. Nothing wrong with cheap plonk (Bota Box fans represent!), but it is ubiquitous. You'd think that you don't need a wine and spirits shop with all of that alcohol ready for the buying just about everywhere, right? Wrong. I'm not just saying that because bourbon is delicious (it is). I'm saying that because Harry's is awesome. Harry's has this warm familial feel about it. The folks that work there are awesome. I hadn't been in in ages and went back recently to restock my home bar and they were talking about how much they missed me! I know they're biased because I'm spending money, but the ego-stroke is nice. Really nice. And they remember what I like and give suggestions! Can't get that kind of service for a dollar (I'm lying. Personal shoppers are a Thing.) (Still counts). The selection is to frikken die for, too. You wouldn't think that a small store would have so much, but they do. I've been going to Harry's on and off since they were located in the old Southwest Waterfront Mall. They've since moved to Southeast and have opened a sister store (Eye Street Cellars in Mt. Vernon Square) but their stock of liquor, beer, and wine has only gotten better. With the demise of the somewhat dubiously named Normandie Liquor, it's really the only game in town. They have a decent number of wines, and their selection of quality spirits is quite good, particularly gin; last time I stopped in they had Plymouth, Blue Coat, and Green Hat. They also have a large fridge full of craft brews (Dogfish Head 120 minutes, DC Brau Solar Abyss, Oscar Blues Scotch Ale, etc), including many large-format beers. Add in great customer service and you have a winning combination! read more

Awesome place. Simply amazing selection of wine and spirits. I really like their whiskey and gin selections, and their staff is generally pretty knowledgeable. The store is nice, clean, and big! They recently started carrying cheese and crackers, which is nice. I wish they carried more local wines, though. They seem like the kind of place that would do that. There are great wineries down in VA and some in MD! I also wish they carried Rex Goliath wines, as they are my go-to to bring to parties and such. I have to get myself on that mailing list so I can see all the events they have going on! read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. I am a person in a wheelchair and a few months ago I had a bad experience in here when an employee stepped over me multiple times in order to stock part of the store. He did not say excuse me, or acknowledge that I was there. It is difficult for me to maneuver through the store because the merchandise is so close together as several people have mentioned. When I visit with someone to shop there, I have to wait at the front of the store since that is the only place my chair will fit. At the time this happened, my partner called the store and tried to talk to them about my experience. This is after I had confronted the individual myself in the store regarding his behavior and he apologized. The store hung up on my partner twice and accused him of harassment even though he was just calling to inform them of the bad experience I had had. Today, I needed something from the liquor store and it was the only store open in the neighborhood. I asked him to go there alone, hesitantly, thinking that if he was just buying one thing, nothing would happen. He walked up to the register and the cashier said oh good to see you are back after harassing us and calling us. I am surprised that he did not leave without purchasing the liquor as I would have. He completed the purchase and left but we will not be back at the store again. The customer should always be right, and the store does not care one bit about its customers, especially if they are people with disabilities. read more

They were open during Snowzilla, the Blizzard of 2016! Even on Saturday during the peak of the storm Harry's was open and stocked with beverages (alcoholic and not), snacks, and tobacco. Harry's has a great selection of liquor, wine, and craft beer. They also offer snacks, mixers, and tobacco. The staff is super friendly and will help you find the perfect gift or compliment a meal. This is such a difference from other Liquor Stores in the area. The best thing might be no glass cashier wall or metal bars. The selection of any kind of wine is great. There's nice selection of cheese and chilled drinks for those who needs products at the moment. Hands down my favorite liquor store in DC. Coming from a civilized state where beer, wine, and liquor can be bought at any store, having to go to a grimy liquor store was always unpleasant - until I found Harry's. They have a phenomenal selection of beer, wine, and liquor from all over the world at really fair prices. Their weekly Friday and Saturday tastings (usually both wine and liquor) are popular and the products are on sale if purchased that day. The real gem is Greg, who knows their selection inside and out and gives excellent recommendations. He's also been known to stock your favorites, upon request. I lived across from Harry's for three years, and though I've since moved to NW DC, I still come down when I can to stock up. read more

I heart Harry's. As a resident of the Navy Yard, it is spectacular to have such a great - well-stocked liquor store in our neighborhood. The store is one block from the Navy Yard metro (DOT-exit). The Wine guy (Gregg?) is fantastic - he knows his wines and understands that we all can't buy Stag's Leap & Chateau Lafite. The store has local beer, some macro brews, & stellar wine and spirit options for all income levels. (They even sell Moscow Mule mugs and ping pong balls for beer games) If you live in SE/NavyYard/ SW, I would recommend. The new Harris Teeter and Unsafeway in SW have limited selection and are vastly overpriced. I do wish Harry's stayed open later on Sunday-Funday in the summer months, but open until 6p still works. Harry's is also part of the 'Belly app' program where you can accumulate points for purchases. You should join that if you shop there on a regular basis like I do. PS. The selection is great and the location is very convenient as I live next door, however I've had three separate issues with customer service and three strikes you're out! Today, I was reprimanded for making a purchase for under $7.00 with my card. I do understand this is an issue for some small business owners, however, there is no sign posted. I don't normally buy non alcoholic items from this establishment so, how am I to know that you have restrictions on your electronic transactions in 2017 if you don't have anything posted. Bad customer service means that I will not spend my $7.00 or my $700 with an establishment that does not respect the person who is spending money with their business. I will no longer patronize this establishment or offer this place as a recommendation to any of my personal or business colleagues. read more

Coming from the midwest where alcohol is sold everywhere and at any time, I had difficulty adapting to the DC 'southern' mentality. Thankfully, this is in my neighborhood! Liquor stores are known for being shady, dirty and not in the best area, but Harry's is the total opposite. Maybe because it's located in a brand new building, I don't know. But very safe feel all around here, very clean interior and well stocked shelves. Great selection of all the oddities you might want, even salmon vodka! Helpful knowledgeable staff too, so if you are sent here to buy something for someone else that you have no knowledge about, they will help you-and not just sell you the most expensive item. I randomly see that they have tastings going on too. Haven't found that schedule though. read more

I live two blocks away from Harry's and I used to stop by very frequently to buy beer and wine. One day, when I was ready to pay for a 12 pack of Heineken, the cashier said: "I'm sorry the price on the tag is wrong it's not $8.99 it's $16.99." I told him that the low price was the reason I chose that particular product, trying to see if they would honor the price on the tag, as it was their mistake not mine. However, he insisted, so I made my way back to the beer section to make another choice. On my way to the back I made a gesture of disapproval with my shoulders, and a guy from the staff saw me and told me "we all make mistakes, don't cry." I honestly thought I heard something wrong and I immediately reply to him: "what did you say?" To that he answered: "Yeah don't cry, because you were about to cry like a baby" and used his hands to make the crying gesture. At that point I was clearly upset because obviously that's not way to treat anybody, even less a customer, and I asked him what was wrong with him, and he kept insulting me, asking me if I was going to cry. Another member of the staff came from behind, and touched my elbow, I guess indicating that I should leave. I already left a bad review, and they appealed it to Yelp and it got deleted because it wasn't explicit enough. This is the whole story. Judge for yourself the kind of store this is. Never in my life have I been treated so badly in any store. I have yet to receive an apology from them. HORRIBLE customer service I would not recommend this store to anybody. read more
