This place is so cute! You walk in and it feels like you've arrived to the tea party. The thoughtful decor and china is absolutely beautiful. We went for dinner on a Saturday night, but this would be the perfect spot for a gorgeous bridal shower or ladies brunch. I don't live in the area, but I would throw something girly here for sure! First time visiting The Cuban Around the Corner and it was an enjoyable meal. The restaurant has plenty of seating, nicely decorated, can host large gatherings, clean, and has plenty of parking. We spoke to the owner and his back story is movie worthy. The things that he endured, back in Cuba, is jaw dropping. Then, after arriving in America, he took full advantage of our divine freedom by studying culinary arts, worked at the prestigious Victor's Café, until he was able to open up this establishment. I started with a tall glass of Passion Fruit Shake, with milk. This was the largest glass of shake I've ever been served and it was creamy, sweet, fresh, and VERY GOOD! We started with Tostones Rellenos con Picadillo (green plantain, filled with ground beef). Each bite was delectable, flavorful, and exploding with spices. Our entrees were: Pechuga de Pollo (Grilled Chicken), with white rice and black beans. The other entree was the Vaca Frita (shredded flank steak), with Moro Rice (dirty rice). Both items were cooked to perfection, flavorsome, and the servings were generous. Those onions, intertwined within that Vaca Frita, was mouth-watering. Late review, forgot to do it earlier. I've eaten here twice, once early on in the first few weeks after the restaurant opened then more recently early this past summer of 2025. I definitely noticed the difference between them both. While will say my initial impression wasn't bad, it wasn't great either, it was more like a two or low three stars. I left it to the fact that things were still work in progress. My more recent experience was very different. The ambiance and service was still very good, but struck me was how much better the food was. Our party was a Puerto Rican /Cuban mix who can be often can be pretty critical by nature. Given my last experience I asked around and, not just me, but everyone in the party was very pleased with the food. This is a beautiful quaint place on a corner that makes you feel like you're in someone's home. There's little to no wait to get a seat for the time being but I do see this place getting packed so I'd suggest you go sooner rather than later. I'm Cuban and the food was terrible, my mom and brother ordered the vaca frita and it wasn't seasoned it wasn't crispy and there were no onions. I ordered the Picadillo it wasn't seasoned had no taste and was sitting in oil, the black beans that came with the rice was flavorless and such a small portion that I could count the beans. We ordered: Descubrimiento (Tour of Cuba's appetizers): Papa rellena, Tamal, Croquettes, Empanadas, Chicharrones and Plantain chips - Potato Ball was tasty but the middle was luke warm but I'm used to it, as every potato ball we've had lately has a cold center...at least it wasn't ice cold Tamale was ok, hubby liked it more than I did Croquettes were meh neither of us liked it... Empanadas were delicious! I would get this alone next time Chicharrons were good Cuban Sandwich - delicious! Huge sandwich, too. The best part is, no mustard (I hate mustard, lol) the pernil was not dry like other places, yay! Rabo Encendido con Congri - so tender it fell off the bones. Very flavorful. Dinner was Friday 10/31/2025 Stepping back in Time at this hidden GEM of Bergen County. We started with appetizers Descubrimiento assortment that was hot just like it was being placed on your kitchen table from the stove. The assortment of Papa rellena, tamal, ham croquettes, empanadas of picadillo, chicarrones and plaintain chips. The aroma of the assortment on the platter awakens your senses. We ordered the Chicarrones Cubanos which is my husband's favorite and yes it came on the assorted platter but you know who doesn't love more Chicarrones! Dinner was a journey of memorable taste buds for me I ordered the Rabo Encendido (Ox Tails). The Black Beans were what I call "On the Money" if you know the homemade version of Black beans it has a that taste of the charred peppers oh I my mouth is watering just writing this. I also order Maduros and Yuca con mojo Oh that Yuca was so fresh. I love everything about this place. The food is delicious, the prices are good, the portions are generous, the service is wonderful, and the ambiance is cozy and welcoming. The decor reminded me of Havana! We had the chicken soup (which tasted like my grandmother's; that confirmed to me that they have Cuban cooks in the kitchen); we also had a a steak sandwich, with maduros and tostones. And the fried snapper was, for lack of a better definition, a poem. This restaurant also has a stage, and there's live music. Make sure you go see David Oquendo (on the first Saturday of each month) for a night of boleros and filin'. This was our first time here. We came with friends who had dined here. The service was great. Very knowledgeable and friendly. The food was generally very good. We have a fair amount of experience with Cuban food. This was on par with some Of the better places we have been. Unfortunately we were there sometime in November so I cannot recall exactly what we had. Among the four of us we were quite happy. My one issue with the food was that my steak was a little over done. Not bad but skirt steak can be challenging. I ordered understanding that so it's not a huge issue. The reason I am not giving it 5-stars Is that they had live music that night. We love Latin music but it was very loud. If we had been at a concert we would have had a blast. However, over dinner it was too much. It was very hard for us to have a conversation. For the main course I had the Vaca Frita which was excellently prepared and my husband had the deep-fried whole red snapper, also perfectly prepared. We shared a large bottle of Pellegrino with our dinner. After dinner I had a delicious latte and my husband had two double espressos. For dessert I wanted the flan, but it had sold out so I got the mango pie instead and my husband had the crème brûlée; both were absolutely delicious. All of that was just over $80!!! There was a $20 door cover for the music which was beautiful, a band called Serenada (we put another $10 in the tip jar). Nice decor in this newly opened Cuban restaurant. The place is quite nice and the service was very good. It just opened about two weeks ago and business is picking up. The food is good, I had my favorite Cuban dish the Ropa Vieja with morro rice. While I enjoyed the meat the rice could have used some sauce, or beans because it was a little dry. Next time I'll have the white rice with beans as they looked good. As far as the apps, we had some croquets and an order of stuffed platanos. They came with Ropa Vieja and ground beef. I preferred the Ropa Vieja because it was very well seasoned. The deserts were great, they serve a delicious Tres Leche cake, and I had a fantastic flan. The syrup on the flan was so good I wanted to lick the plate but my wife gave me the look of death, lol. Next time I will try the mango pie which I was told it is fantastic. They don't serve liquor yet so it is byob which can save you some bucks. All in all it was a good experience and I will definitely return. Came here for the first time and found the experience wonderful. We shared the descubrimiento to start (which is a sampler of a lot of their apps) and we couldn't decide which one was more delicious. The croquetas tasted like the ones I had at Cuban restaurants in Miami. The mojo sauce that came with the tostones was a highlight. For dinner I had the vaca frita which was spectacular, and my boyfriend had the lechón asado. The vaca frita was very flavorful and the congri tasted authentic. The flan was perfect--not too sweet--which endeared me to it, because I normally do not like flan. The evening was capped off with an espresso, which was the metaphorical cherry on top of an overall sublime meal. Less than a star but I needed to add 1 star just to enter the review. Disgraceful way to operate as a new business. We were charged a $10/pp cover fee. We were never informed of this nor were there any signs about this. Owner said she posted in social media - it's just a pretty poor way to operate. They will not last long in this neighborhood being so sneaky and dishonest, it's a shame because it could be a nice place but you will never do well operating so shady. I have no problem with a fee, there was plenty of time to inform us of it while we were there for an hour and a half dining, And they were hesitant to give us a receipt because they knew the fee was itemized there. First time, we just took out and let me tell you worth the 20 minutes drive from our house. We ordered a host of the usual favorites, Palomilla, Shrimp, Pernil, Ropa Vieja and everything was super tasty, piping hot still after the ride home. Beans are definitely homemade and the yuca frita my wife could not stop raving about and she's 100 % Cuban. The waiter helped me to the car and everything.
