This salon is the best thing my fiancé could've ever found for me. My lovely future mother in law brought me here as a gift for my birthday. Ariane was my stylist, and as I told her what my routine was, she told me what I should change and tips on how to take care of my hair better. Like any other curly girl, I was apprehensive to taking any length off (even the 1/2 inch) because of shrinkage, but I was in love with my devacut at the end. I took notes of all the tips she gave me and I'm looking forward to seeing my hair improve with them. My mother in law (also a curly haired woman) loved so much how they cut my hair that she described it as an art, and she's going to grow her hair out a bit so she can change up her hairstyle at the salon as well. Absolutely wonderful salon for curlies and wavies! They totally live up to the name and hype. While the salon is located on the 2nd floor, the stairs to enter are to the left of the building when facing the front of the building (on 72nd street/ Sunset); there's a small sign indicating the correct stair case. There is some street parking along Sunset, but I found more in a public parking lot behind the building. Appointments are easy to schedule but may take some time in advance if you want a particular stylist as they're pretty busy (I had to wait 3 weeks for an opening with the one I wanted on a Saturday). Virtually all of the staff, including Silvana the main stylist, are wavy, curly, or coily haired themselves, which is reassuring. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. They run pretty much on schedule; I only had to wait 10 minutes or less for my stylist to finish with the customer before me. I have 2C/3A fine hair and had already had my first devacut a year ago with Silvana, but I waited way too long between cuts & it was a frizzy, unmanageable mess. Silvana was great again, giving wonderful tips during the dry cut. The assistant who helped wash and dry it was also very knowledgeable explaining different techniques and product uses. I like that they suggest products as they use them on you but they're never pushy in trying to sell them. After the dry my hair looked amazing! I am so happy to have found this place. I was living near Manhattan and would go to Devachan or Deva trained stylists whenever I could find them, and then moved to Miami. Yanisel has cut my hair twice, and both times it has turned out beautifully. She is not pushy, but she understands curls. She cut my hair exactly like I asked, but with her brilliant understanding of how it would react. She used Ouidad products on my hair which I really like. She cut it dry, but uses different methods based on curl type. Highly recommend if you have naturally curly hair. read more

Beware this place is not for just anyone! I went to the curl whisperer back in February due to the many good reviews I had read on it. My hair had endured heat and dye damage so I wanted a fresh chop. My curls are loose so I was hesitant at first. One of the employees dyed it back to my natural color which is dark brown...then the owner herself cut my hair mind you I told her my hair did not look good in layers yet she kept insisting that it would add volume finally I gave in and she proceeded to butcher my hair. At the end of the of it all she charged me nearly 300 for all the "services" for a dye that washed off 3 weeks later and a horrific hair cut I'm so insecure about I've had my hair in a bun since...definitely never returning again. read more

The Curl Whisperer is the only place I will go to get my hair cut. From the moment I walked into the salon I was taken care of like no other. Yanisel was the stylist who cut my hair, she talked me out of doing a horrible bang, explained what kind of cut would work best and really made me feel like she First she cut my hair dry. Then I was walked to the wash station where another person was there to walk me through the process. They used great quality products and did NOT pressure me to purchase any of the items. They let me take a picture of the bottles so if I did want to purchase I could shop around. After the wonderful wash I was taken back to the chair for a conditioning treatment under a heat lamp, than back to the wash station. After the wash , Yanisel touched up my cut and starting walking me through the styling process and products, again no pressure for purchasing the products. Once all the styling was complete the blow drying process began and for anyone who has curly hair they know this can usually take FOREVER, but not here. I was bent over toward during the blow drying process and at one point I looked up and noticed three people (yes! 3 people) were drying my hair. All of them were using the Dyson blow dryer and it was wonderful. I have never had a hair cut experience like this. If I could give 0 stars, trust me, I WOULD. So, here's the story. I have incredibly long curly hair. I made an appointment to cut my hair with the Curl Whisperer after hearing so many people rave about how fantastic they are with Curly Girls. I was so excited that I immediately booked a service with them. At the time of the booking NO ONE expressed to me that if I had to cancel or reschedule it would have to be 24 hours before the service. But in any case, when an emergency came up in my life I immediately started calling and sending them Whatsapp messages to cancel my appointment. NO ONE answered the phones or messages. They eventually closed that night so I stopped trying to contact, with faith that they would reach back out to me the following day. But in came the morning and me, being the skeptical human that I am, decided to contact them anyway instead of waiting for them to contact me. I had been attempting to contact them since 8 in the morning through whatsapp and phone calls, but no one would answer. Whatsapp would show that they were reading the messages but NO ONE would respond. FINALLY, I get connected to someone over the phone. I was rudely told that I may not cancel my appointment, but I may reschedule it due to the 24 hour cancellation policy (which NO ONE had advised me of.) At this point, due to the lack of customer service, I decided I simply no longer wanted to take my business to this establishment, but was told that I would lose my $30.00 deposit. I advised them that I would then reschedule my appointment and then cancel it within the 24 hour period because I simply didn't feel to take my business there- I was rudely told to hold and after about 2 minutes I spoke to who I'm assuming to be a manager of some sort. Who, in short, told me (and I quote) "I will refund you, but you can NEVER COME DO YOUR HAIR IN THIS SALON EVER." The reaction from this so-called manager was laughable. But I obliged, and let her know that it was fine and the she could black list me and it wouldn't matter at all to me. upon further research I noticed that their policy for cancellations is online. And to their defense, I should've done more research online before booking. This being said, however, I think that a policy as strict as theirs should be verbally said before confirming any appointments. Anyway, I'm happy I never have to step foot here, as her attitude and lack of customer service was of EPIC proportions. read more

Let me just start by saying that my hair was so badly chemically damaged due to some at home coloring I had been experimenting with. I've always hated salons because I didn't feel they knew how to work with my hair and I always left feeling like my hair was unmanageable and not liking the end result. so I resorted to coloring my hair and damaging it badly. I came to the curl whisperer after googling curl specialists in Miami, knowing I was in desperate need of some hair rehab. I've never actually tried going to someone who works with curly hair because I thought it was a fad. I came here with low expectation and a lot of anxiety based on my past experiences. Silvana and Ariana were with me throughout this whole process. They didn't make me feel bad and reassured me that my hair was recoverable and they would work with me. They stayed with me for 2.5 hours and walked me through ever step and product. They didn't try to sale or convince me of anything. It was just about restoring my hair and educating me. I realized I've been mistreating my hair all my life and all the other salons I've been to simply just did not know how to work with my hair. After a specialized cut, color, treatment, and styling I felt like 100 bucks. I am so disappointed to give this rating. I've been going to the Curl Whisper for years. I had great experiences the first 2 times. My third visit wasn't as great and I felt the stylist wasn't really understanding my request for color and I decided not to have color done, as she shared with me she didn't want to place that color on my hair and that she instead wanted to dye all my gray hair that I had shared I was growing out. That felt odd since I first got the idea to grow my grays out from a book in the salon, however it seems she didn't agree with that view. This last visit will for sure be my last time at Curl Whisper. I booked a visit with a senior stylist and was looking forward to my hair cut for weeks. I showed her a photo and showed her exactly where I wanted the length to be at. She began cutting my hair but was not very attentive and seemed to be involved in many other tasks, walking away multiple times. When she finished my cut she shared my texture was different because of my grays so the hair cut wouldn't look like the photo. I was confused, as the photo was of someone with wavy hair. I felt like my hair was way too short but tried not to judge it just yet. Once it was styled she kept saying my texture changed and that my hair wasn't curly but wavy but that I "still looked pretty" I was very obvious I was unhappy with the haircut and I could tell she was too. My hair looked awful and I hoped it was just the styling. I'm confused to why she shared my hair wasn't curly, as I've had no issue curling my hair at home. Im confused as to why my hair going from curly to wavy would mean my haircut would be so bad. There is one short chunky layer in the front of my hair. I was so shocked by how unhappy I was with this haircut and with this visit. I will be looking for another curly hair salon that is supportive of growing out natural hair, not one that detours you from it. read more

I had the worst cut I ever had in my life! I had to leave the salon with a silk scarf to hide my ugly haircut. It's been almost a year after my haircut, and it's growing out so bad. It's one of the worst decisions in my life. After this experience, I vowed to never return to salons again. The hairstylist Ariadna claimed to know to cut coily tight hair (3C/4A/4B). I had such a voluminous Afro but it was destroyed in seconds because she makes weird layers and takes off so MUCH length. Oh man... I am so excited about this place. The salon is located on the 2nd floor. I was seen at my appointment time by Johana. I was definitely hesitant and nervous at first to cut my long locks in a new salon but she was amazing.My hair was extremely long and very thin after coloring it. She sat down with me and we discussed the state of my hair and what results we could achieve. She was very kind and funny. I felt super comfortable with her. She's very knowledgeable of everything curly related. She took her time explaining every step as well as what products I should be using and why. I never felt pressured to buy anything. She went above and beyond. The first time she dried my hair, it was already looking 80% better than what I walked in with but it was not good enough for her. She went as far as wetting my hair again, used a different gel and dried again to get the results she knew my hair could achieve. She transformed my hair from limp skinny lifeless to curls that literally bounce when I walk. It's such a pleasure to work with someone who takes so much pride in their work. Meanwhile, the rest of the staff was very welcoming. We were served mimosas while getting our hair done and the 2 hours I was there flew by for me. Got recommended here by a coworker so I went to try it out. Hate to say that although the ladies were nice, I was not happy with my haircut. Took almost two months to grow it enough for my usual stylist to fix it. Of course, I had to loose a lot of length to make it even. They gave me what my stylist said was a blunt cut. Horrible for my texture and not what I wanted. I ended up with the dreaded triangle hair. No layers whatsoever which for some curly hair types, mine been one of them, are needed. Also, I was there for almost 3 hours. Most of the time was for styling after the cut. Is not practical to spend almost an hour in the morning styling your hair and the end result was not all that. They kept saying that this is what I needed to do to give volume to my hair. Anyway between this and the preachy shampoo lady (a couple of times I felt like telling her to shut up already about lecturing and quizing me, yes quizing me to make sure I was listening and paying attention, about how to wash my hair and also going on and on about how great were their Devacurl and Ouidad products - I get up everyday for work at 4:30am so I just wanted to relax), I cannot say that I will be returning. Glad that this place works for many but for me was a huge thumbs down!!! read more

I've been going to this salon for years and can safely say that I will never go back again. I've dedicated myself to the curly girl method and used all the products (DevaCurl, Ouidad, Innersense) and routines picked up at the salon, but the last haircut I got there (in June 2020) is the worst haircut I have ever had. Frankly, it's so bad that I've been crying over it and it has impacted the way I feel about myself. It took me three years to grow my hair out, and the one thing I emphasized to the stylist was that I wanted to KEEP THE LENGTH. Frankly, she butchered me, and she chopped off like 8 inches of hair in the process. I now have a super short haircut, with pieces of hair sticking out all over the place, which is the OPPOSITE of what I had requested. It's crazy to pay so much for such a horrible haircut and for a service that is nothing close to what I requested. Everybody in my life has been commenting how awful this haircut is and how terribly short my hair is now. I'm brokenhearted about it and I will never go back to this salon. Everytime I look in the mirror, I am in shock over this bad haircut and how bad it makes me look. The stylist did not give me a "curl by curl" haircut, rather she shaped my hair into some sort of shape decided by her, which is not conducive to my hair type, and she just went crazy cutting and cutting and cutting, when all I had asked for was a simple trim with the same style as before. Honestly, this is one of the worst haircuts I've ever had in my life and I'm super unhappy about it. I've never written a bad review before and I signed up for Yelp solely to write this review because I am so dissatisfied with the service. My advice to others is to be very clear and assertive with the stylist, and to make sure that the stylist speaks the same language. Perhaps the stylist didn't understand anything I was saying. I still can't believe she cut all my hair off. I truly hate this haircut. It's just heartbreaking, and again, nothing even close to what I had requested. I originally had an appointment with her assistant Yanisel but I called to reschedule and Sylvana was able to meet with me. For 12 years I've used many curl products starting with Deva Curl but strayed away. When I met with Sylvana she asked a lot questions in order to know me and my curls. She then cut my hair dry which is recommended for curly hair. Then she had me write down step by step tasks in styling my hair with her assistant Irene. I waited a couple of days to post this review I went to Silvana to add moisture to my hair my hair is very curly but thick and I wanted a look that is advertised on her IG how all the girls looked moisturized. Silvana used Phyto and low poo deva and ouidad and melt into moisture she is old fashioned and does not know what type of products to use for textured hair she broke off all my hair and I am so disgusted with this organization and she lied and said none of my hair came out. She was very rude stating that she didn't think it was true that my hair doesn't usually fall out like what? DONT GO TO this salon my hair was in such great shape before Silvana touched my hair now each strand has broken hair and my texture has changed dramatically it's so dry! The Curl Whisperer - New cut...first day. - Hair Stylists Near Me - Miami, Florida

I'm new to the CG method and have spent serious time researching, experimenting, and switching out any products I was using that had silicone, sulfate, or generally didn't pass muster on isitcg.com. My hair is colored and I was hesitant to return to the high end salon I have known and loved for years, for fear that they'd use non-CG approved products on my hair and that I'd have to strip it with a clarifier again. That was the FIRST thing I told my clearly knowledgeable and highly rated stylist, who did a good job of explaining how I should wash and style my hair from now on. She had me take notes and pictures of products she recommended (all DevaCurl and Ouidad products that they sell at the salon) and taught me techniques on how I should apply products. This was the good part. The shocking part that I'm literally losing sleep over is that as I was taking notes on my phone and researching the products she was using on my hair (again, all Devacurl and Ouidad), I noticed that the Ouidad shampoo she had used had sulfate and that the Ouidad conditioner she recommended for every day use (already in my hair at the time) had silicone. I honestly wanted to cry but composed myself and asked, "in your experience, do you not think avoiding sulfates and silicones is important?" She responded that in my case, with my hair type, it was necessary because Ouidad was the longest standing product line on the market for curly hair. ‍ I should add that my hair is wavy and not curly, but I honestly feel that she WAS NOT LISTENING TO ME. I just paid about $200 for my roots to be colored and my hair to be cut and styled WITH NON-CG APPROVED products. It actually cost me more money than if I had gone back to my already expensive tried and true salon. Let's take a minute to remind ourselves why I ventured out of my comfort zone and tried The Curl Whisperer in the first place. Oh, that's right...because I was petrified over the thought of a salon who doesn't specialize in curly hair using silicones and sulfates in my hair. This exact thing JUST happened at The Curl Whisperer. And had I purchased all 7 products she recommended I use in my hair plus the satin cap, spray bottle, and just as I was checking out, a Devacurl refresher, I would have spent another $250 in products and gadgets IN ADDITION to my $200 sulfate and silicone disaster. I didn't buy a single additional thing and will not be going back. Not only were silicones and sulfates used in my hair at this salon, which I expressed my fear of from the beginning, but I felt pressured to buy ALL of the expensive products. I came to The Curl Whisperer to get guidance and learn how to do things "right" from the experts, but instead I feel taken advantage of, and that's an awful feeling. My hair looks decent and undoubtedly better than it did when I walked in, but when you tell someone that the products they've been using aren't working for their hair and suggest expensive products that contain silicones and sulfates that you know (or at least heard) they're against, you're leaving your client lost and with no choice but to start from square one again. No one wins in this case, and today they lost what could have been a loyal and influential client. Taking deep breaths and trying not to dive head first into a bowl of ice cream to calm the anxiety I now feel after this experience. read more

I am so glad I finally came here to get my haircut. My stylist was Arianne. She was so nice and helpful. I don't have the name of the young lady who helped with washing my hair, giving me a deep treatment and diffusing my hair but she was amazing and gave me so many tips. I definitely recommend this place. Arianne listened to what I wanted but also gave me advice on what I should and shouldn't do for my cut. I'm very happy with the results.
