This place was a dream come true for my daughter and I, she is 3 years old and I had no idea what to do with her out of control curls. She also had never previously been to a hair salon. The ladies at The Curl Whisperer were extremely nice and understanding. They explained everything to me one step at a time so I could maintain the amazing curly outcome they provided. The products were reasonably priced at roughly $20 a pop. The location was a little difficult to find as here is currently heavy construction in the area however the actual salon is clean and modern. I originally came to the Curl Whisper because I was soooo desperate to understand my hair. I dealt with frizz and no curl definition for a while since growing out my pixie cut. Johana walked me through what products to use and how. The education they gave me about my hair was the most valuable thing I left with. Although I did alter the application process a bit, I did end up buying the Ouidad products they recommended and can see such a difference. I have very curly hair and have struggled with styling it because of the damage over the years from dyeing it and heat damage. I have long hair, but the ends were super thin from all the damage. I was so excited to go here after many good reviews, however when I showed up for the consultation, retouch roots on honey blonde highlights ($800-1000) and cut came out to be $200+. I was beyond shocked with the estimated price being $1,200+ as my hair usually costs $350 for the same exact service. Disappointed.... I researched this place since I like the Deva products, and saw several good reviews and some bad ones. I decided to give it a try... but I won't go back. This is a place where they Do What They Want To YOur Hair, but Not What I Wanted and Asked For. I have wavy hair and knew exactly the cut I wanted, with photos on my phone which I showed to my stylist, Neyda. When I made my appointment, the receptionist on the phone said there were three choices for haircuts: 1. with a Master Stylist ($150 based on 3-4 years of experience); 2. with a Junior Stylist ($125 based on 2-3 years of experience and 3. an "express cut," with no choice to come back and get it fixed afterwards. I chose Junior Stylist -- and it turned out she told me herself that she only had a few months of experience after her training in dry cutting. She glanced at the photos and said oh yeah, ok. Long story short, she gave me a cut for coily African-American or very curly hair -- BUT that is not MY hair. It was like a round balloon around my head, but with curls stuck to my scalp after several contorsions and following her instructions to get up and down from the chair, bend over and sideways, etc. while she snipped away. I told her the result looked nothing like the pics -- and she said "maybe your hair doesn't do that" (it does; I had that cut somewhere else a few months back). She tried to "open it up" with an Afro pick.... but I hated the way it looked on me. By the way: she talked to the stylist next to us about food almost the whole time; maybe she was hungry? She kept talking down to me and answered my questions rather curtly. Also, heads up: they ask for a 50% deposit and if you do not cancel the appt. within 24 hrs., they keep it. They give you very specific instructions days before you come in, like wash your hair the day-of or the day before your appt., you cannot be late, you cannot use product, must wear a mask, etc. Summary: if you want someone else's idea and "prescription" of what to do with your hair -- and you don't mind unfriendly, pretentious and condescending service at a high price -- come to this place. This salon uses devacurl and Ouidad products which is great. I have type 3c hair and I like my hair super defined. The method they use isn't conducive to my hair. I need more moisture and definition and those products don't give either. I don't recommend this place for my super curly girls. I've been to many salons and the only ones in south Florida that can tend to our hair types are Maggie Rose Salon in Davie, Natural Touch Salon in Pembroke Pines or Hydracurl in Margate. I highly recommend those salons if you want definition. It's truly worth the drive. These ladies were super nice and it was very easy to make an appointment. The washing and conditioning education experience was good BUT my hair cut was horrible! I assigned a senior or junior stylist (I can't tell you who because I didn't catch her name- either way, there wasn't a master stylist supervising). I asked for a trim, because I already had a shape that I liked and just wanted to remove the split ends, but she cut 4+ inches off my just-below-the-shoulders hair. She kept insisting that she wasn't cutting that much. She also completely changed the style and shape of what I had (it was as if she only knew how to cut one style). When she dried and styled it, she used so much product that my hair felt dry and crunchy. She could tell that I was unhappy and told me that she could make it better if I let her cut more. I said NO. I hoped that when I went home and washed and styled again it would be better, but no- it was still a weird shape with all kinds of varying length. I have been looking for a natural curly hair stylist for a while with no luck until I discovered The Curl Whisperer online and decided to get a cut with her after looking at her work online. After looking at before and after pictures of cuts she made to people with similar curly/kinky hair as mine I decide to get a cut with her. There are a lot of pictures of her work on Instagram and Facebook. Let me start with the location. The Curl Whisperer is located in the Phenix Salon Suites. These suites are on the first floor of a light blue building. The building has its own parking garage and there are free parking spots designated for the Phenix Salon Suites customers. When you enter the reception you just need to let the receptionist know that you are going to The Curl Whisperer and she will explain how to get to her suite. Silvana and her assistant Yanisel were very welcoming. Silvana asked me about my hair and for how long I have been a natural. I explained to her that I have not relaxed my hair in almost three years and that I have cut my hair several times after that, but never with a stylist that specializes in curly hair. My hair had a lot of heat damage and most of my curls were lifeless. She then asked me if I had a routine and hand me a pen and paper to start writing down all the tips and advices she had for my hair. My hair was washed and finger detangled by her assistant Yanisel who explained everything she was doing and the products she was applying to my hair. After that my hair was dried and then Silvana cut my hair. Before started cutting she showed me how much hair she would need to cut in order for my hair to look healthier and bring my curls back to life. She took pictures of my hair and showed me how the back part was uneven and damaged. I truly enjoyed my visit to The Curl Whisperer. It was more than a haircut, it was a learning experience. I learned a lot about my hair and the things I should do to bring it back to a healthy state. I don't do reviews often. I am so impressed I had to leave a review. Got my hair done by Arianna. Never seen my curls pop like this. The front of my hair is limp with zero curl definition. I've tried everything for these hairs, finger coiling, Denman brush everything. Somehow she was able to tease out some curls. The cut was great. She asked me what I wanted and definitely delivered on that. Usually the stylists do whatever they want even after telling them what I want or they just give me a trim (this is my biggest pet peeve, I'm not paying $100 for a trim) I'm super happy with the cut and the layers that she added. They definitely didn't push products which I really appreciate. They showed me what to use and told me that I should take pictures. I was definitely skeptical but it turned out great. I ended up purchasing some of the styling products. For reference I have fine strands but thick hair beyond bra strap length that I would type as 3c-4a. They were shockingly super, super gentle. If someone doesn't know what they're doing it can easily be a mess and I have left salons before with my hair in a bun or half of my hair in the brushes. I thought I was updating my review but it looks like I never wrote one. This place is the best haircut for curly hair hands down. My first time I went to Johanna and I was amazed. They do a dry cut and she just snips a little here and a little there. Then the hair washing process is an art form in itself. This is the place where you have to take notes on products and process. This time I went to Yani and she was just as awesome. The hair washing took less time but the results are amazing. Again I took notes. They use the Deva and Ouidad products and are trained by the Deva folks. You truly feel giddy when you leave because your hair never has looked so good. I was a little hesitant at first. I kept seeing their ads everywhere on my Instagram feed. I ended up giving in and trying my luck at this curly cut thing. I am very particular about who cuts my hair because of some terrible experiences I've had in the past (I'm pretty sure we've all been there). I called an booked an appointment 3 days before. My stylist was Johanna. She was very friendly and asked me what I was looking for. I wanted my hair to not be AS frizzy (if that's even possible) and I wanted to see if I can actually have curls instead of waves. She told me my hair looked very dehydrated (I've always done masks and use oils up the wazoo). She gave me two different masks and told me NOT to use normal oils anymore because they actually dry my hair out. She also showed me how to curl my hair at home and what products I should be using. I NEVER leave Yelp reviews but I had such an absolutely horrifying experience that I could not keep quiet. I have an appointment scheduled for tomorrow at 1pm but due to a scheduling conflict needed to reschedule. I was aware of their 24hr cancellation policy so I called this morning at 9:23am. No one answered and their voice mail message specifically states to not leave a message and that they will call me back. I got busy with work so did not realize until 5:30pm that they never called me back. I called at 5:30, 5:44, and 5:46-all with no answer and the same message to not leave a message and they will call back. I finally get a call back and when I let the woman know that I need to reschedule, she tells me that I cannot because I'm past the 24hr window. When I tell her that I called at 9:23am and no one called me back, she repeatedly insists that someone called me back, though she's unable to tell me when. After being repeatedly told that someone called me even though I was staring at my call log and there was no incoming call until the current call, I asked to speak to the manager. The assistant manager got on the phone and continued to insist that someone called me until I challenged her to pull the call record and tell me the exact time someone called me. She put me on hold and after what I can only assume was a failed attempt to find a call that does not in fact exist, she got back on the phone and asked me to send her a screenshot of my time stamped call. I sent it to her and after being put on hold again, the original woman got on the phone and told me I could reschedule. After this nightmare of a conversation, I have absolutely no desire to frequent this establishment so I let her know that I now want to cancel. She told me that I could not cancel without incurring the $50 penalty. I found this to be confusing since I just went through the hassle of sending my call logs to the assistant manager, who clearly found that no one called me back since she approved the rescheduling. I asked to speak to the assistant manager again who got on the phone and again stated that I could not cancel because although I called at 9:23am, I did not text them. At what number? Unclear. Pursuant to what texting policy? Also unclear. This is the most infuriating interaction I have ever had with a business and the level incompetence coming out of this place is unmatched. She cut it to the length that I wanted then sent me to get my hair washed and conditioned explaining that she would do a dry cut after my hair was cleaned. Went there twice and will never go back. The hairdresser (Ari or whatever) had no idea what to do with 4B hair. She did not know how to cut it and later on as my hair grew I noticed how she left it uneven as strands were sticking out. She left some deep conditioner in my hair and even used that same devacurl deep conditioner as leave in, while also using the gel or mousse on my hair to define it. All she did was cause major product buildup and made my hair stiff af. Bottom line, as long as your hair is not in the 4 category, this salon is def for you. So I went back for my second haircut on Sept 29, was scared to go because of COVID 19, I was very happy the way they handled the appointment from start to finish. They are taking all the proper precautions before appointment as well as when you first get there, also not letting a lot of people in the salon and keeping the chairs 6 feet apart.
