What a difference a day makes, or in this case roughly 8 years. The nicest thing you could say about the old Curlers was that it was very "washable". You could see that the staff spent a lot of time having to clean down the surfaces and remove a variety of fluids and solids after a night of student debauchery. I am thinking power washer here. It was bad. Oh yeah - it is no longer Yellow. Yellow? Who the hell paints a pub Yellow? So how the hell did this place emerge? Nice decor for nice people. I was looking around and thinking that most of the interior would not have survived in the bad old days. I have feeling that I will turn up some day and it will have returned to it bad ways. Like a drunken relative that you know will steal your wallet or throw up in your sink during the night. When they show up in a suit - you still have your reservations. But that is now gone. It is now a decent pub with a nice interior. I am hoping it stays that way. read more

First time in this place and i was very happy with it. We had a wonderful christmas meal. A lovely starter of root vegetable soup with black pepper and lovely bread. It was well seasoned and very thick and lovely. A main of turkey with potatoes, stuffing balls, pigs in blankets and brussel sprouts. The turkey was very nice, potatoes a little charred but tasty and the portion was sooooo big!! Lastly i had a lemon tart and some strawberry soebt ice cream which was lovely and creamy. The reason it gets a 4 is the atmospher. One of the few places in Glasgow with a wood burning fire that you can feed yourself. Very cosy indeed and well decorated to relax you. This combined with some very nice mulled cider made for a great end to the evening! read more

I think some of my fellow Yelpers experienced Curlers with a blindfold on, or perhaps walked into a different pub entirely. If you like the football and want a seriously awful pint for a couple of quid then you might love this place. I, however, do like the football but I like a bit of fizz in my Heineken, so you wont find me in here. Decor leaves me scratching my head, I've not idea what they were trying to do? I know its a franchised bar and all but it looks like there was a serious amount of minimal effort put into this and I wouldnt be surpirsed if they paid their bar staff to paint the walls. And worst of all they have those cubes to sit on, the poorest excuse for a seat since a bike with no saddle. The food is poor, you can occasionally see staff nipping into iceland for a bag of frozen curley fries and the service is shocking. Last time I ate there (possibly a year ago) the barman took the tickets out of our food after he placed it infront of us then proceeded to scrunch them into a ball and throw it over his shoulder. Now the laws have changed and they can't do pound a pint on Mondays, as far as I'm concerned it has nothing going for it whatsoever. First year students enjoy, and then find a decent bar to like. read more

Stopped here for a few drinks on a Saturday afternoon. Beer was good, the seats against the wall were a lot more comfier than the others, and there was a good atmosphere. Its a good place to maybe stop for a pint or two when venturing out in the West End. Will definitely return at some point! read more

Curler's always gives me a fuzzy nostalgic feeling, all those many years ago it was my "other" student union, and it was never as good then as it is now. It has an interesting history, fantastic range of beers, great range of seating, good food and a good crowd. There are two things that bug me about it though, number one being the lack of a beer garden, number two being it's pretty damn expensive. We decided to eat here after unexpectedly prolonging our West End evening, my partner ordered a cheeseburger (without bacon) and myself the confusingly named Pork, Leek and Welsh Rarebit Sausages. The service was pleasant as ever, and the food came out quickly. The sausages were lovely, there were three of them, but they were pretty small and they almost entirely covered the bed of mash. The mash was lovely and had tomato through it, but to reiterate the mash was almost entirely covered by the three small sausages. Then there was the lovely red wine jus and a few leaves. She liked her burger and it came with enough fluffy chips to keep her happy and for me to nick a few, but I was still hungry. The quality of the food is undoubtedly pretty good, and the place and the staff are great, but to have a proper feed you may have to part with more of your hard-earned cash than you might like and order sides and/or a starter too. We stopped in at Curlers for drinks one afternoon after exploring Glasgow and we really enjoyed the place! I had a delicious souped-up Pimms cup filled with fruit and we had an order of their chorizo and toast bar snack that hit the spot. They had a wide variety of beers including some cask ales and the rest of their lunch/dinner menu sounded delicious. Would've loved to return if we had been in Glasgow a little longer! read more

A regular haunt for two old friends of mine who now live in Glasgow. They're the ones who brought me to The Curler's Rest for drinks and dinner last Monday night. Okkervil River, my favourite band, was playing when we entered, a good omen. The beer I had, its name now forgotten, was tasty (though perhaps not as cold as most North American palates are accustomed), and my fish and chips were decent. I just wish my peas hadn't been cold ... I was a bit confused about the payment process, as my credit card contains a chip that just needs to be waved over the receiver (a feature I've never used in Canada or the States), and the pub doesn't give you a receipt if your total is under 20 pounds ... so I wasn't exactly sure I'd paid until a friendly bartender stopped by to bus some glasses, overheard us talking about it, and answered the question. read more

Curlers Rest is one of the main pubs to go to in the Byres Road area. Situated right next to Hillhead subway station, it's an open 2 floor bar which has a wide selection of drinks and also does food. The layout of the bar is fairly open, with seating space upstairs and downstairs. The downstairs area is quite dimly lit, but I've never found it a huge problem. Upstairs is a bit brighter, with some large bench style tables, ideal for larger parties. There's a bar both upstairs and downstairs. The drinks selection in Curlers is very good, with a wide range of draught beers on offer. Though they are a bit on the steep side pricewise, the varied selection makes up for it. There's also a wide range of bottled beers and ciders on offer as well. The food in Curlers is very good, though the menu has changed in the past 6 months, and the options aren't quite as good as the old menu. There's some good deals, with a 2 course meal costing £10 through the week. The burgers on offer are the highlight though, very tasty and good value for the money. Overall Curlers is a great place to visit in the West End, and should be a stop if you're out for drinks read more

Nice enough place to pop into if you're in the West End but I don't think it's anything special. I took my parents there for Sunday dinner, assuming it would be okay for two fussy 60somethings but alas, no. The food was fine, my chicken was a bit too dry for my liking and my yorkshire pudding was burnt. But apart from that, it was just...alright, you know? But what really put me off was the music! Over the course of the hour and a half we were there, the music went from the kind of house music you'd hear at Sub Club to The Eagles. The easy listening, Eagles type music is alright, the kind of stuff you'd probably expect to hear in a pub on a Sunday but...house music? Really? The music in here is pretty darn loud too and I'm being very honest when I say I couldn't hear what my parents were saying. It felt more like a pre-club destination! So that put me off and my parents hated the loud music (cue them grumbling about "young sorts and their music"). That really disappointed me as I've heard a lot of great things about this place. Stuffed after a fab Sunday roast with big thick cuts of pork and yummy crackling, came with lots of roast potato and veg as well as a Yorkshire pud and lots of gravy. Ordered the side of cauliflower cheese too which was yummy and creamy. Staff were really polite and friendly and in general it was a lovely chilled out lunch with some relaxing tunes in the background and the football on the screen (on mute) to keep the fella happy. On a quiet night, Curlers can feel like it's all your own. With the big plush couches, jukebox, and seemingly bottomless drinks, it's like having a student hang out with your friends at someone's inordinately cosy flat. On the weekend and busy nights, though, I can see how this place turns into an overly-studenty hovel. It's loud, it's brash, and it's absolutely jumping. I passed it one Saturday recently and was amazed at the number of smokers milling around outside, and recall wondering, "Is there anyone left INSIDE?!" It's a bit of a scream bar, but that's the beauty of it. It's the kind of place that feels like your local, regardless of where you've travelled from. It's cheap, it's friendly, and it's almost always a good time. Awesome. read more

We came here twice; once to drink, and once to attempt eating. The menu was so un-tempting though that we left; we do not recommend it for dinner. However, the time we caem to drink was good. There was a large list of beers, ciders, and other alcohols, with reasonable prices. Don't come too late on a friday night -- we had a lot of trouble finding a seat. I'm not going to lie to you, Curlers is probably one of the most studenty pubs in Glasgow - being a Scream bar, it would be. However, not only is it studenty, it also attracts a large percentage of older gentlemen, especially with the CONSTANT football matches that are shown on tv. If you're looking for cheap grub, then by all means, eat here - but what you pay for is what you get. The food doesn't taste amazing, but when you pay £3.50 for a burger and pint, you can't really complain. Monday night's are quite fun upstairs as the sports get turned off and the music gets turned up. Drinks start at £1 (Pints, WKDs, shots) so as I said, it's cheap. Just watch your head on the low ceiling where the toilets are - as a tall female, I have nearly banged my head several times. Not so fun after a few drinks, I can tell you that for nothing. Curlers is nothing fancy but it serves it's purpose of a cheap pub where you can get cheap drinks and pretty standard pub grub. Due to it's close proximity to the Uni it attracts mainly a student crowd but to be honest, you see all different ages of people in here. They do a beer and a burger deal for a mere £4.95 and they also have a rather extensive menu where you can choose pretty cheap dishes. I went for fish and chips and although it wasn't mind blowing, it filled a gap and was very reasonable. I also got a glass of wine which was only £1.25, and it didn't taste like turps, believe it or not. I was here for a good few hours yesterday catching up with some friends and the relaxed, laid back atmosphere with TV's dotted all around really does make you feel like you're sitting in your living room. We were too busy chatting away to realise crowds and crowds and football fanatics gathering to watch the football and during half time decided to leave as it was a little too crowded but there was a great atmosphere. Overall, Curlers is fairly inoffensive and if you don't expect too much from it I think you'll be presently surprised. I think this place gets a bad rep sometimes. Whats wrong with cheap drink, a decent jukebox and a tasty burger?? OK it certainly isn't the most interesting place to drink in the west end but its like those old joggy bottoms you wear to bed, they're ragged and probably a little piss stained but they're comfortable and good to chill out in. Sometimes you don't want to go to the trendy bars where you feel like you have to behave a certain way all night. Curlers feels like your local, regardless of where you come from. read more

I have had mixed experiences in this pub. When I have gone in the evening the atmosphere has been good and the drinks are great value for money. However when I have been in for lunch the service was awful and the food not much better! It is very cheap though, and being in the studentville west end it is very popular with students. I prefer the vibe of the upstairs bar, it is more chilled out and caters to a slightly older crowd. read more

This is probably one of my most favorite places to visit in the West End. I love how it feels like you're walking out of busy Glasgow and in to some rural part of Scotland where all the locals should be. It's dark and cozy, complete with loads of comfy couches, candle lit tables and bar seating. There's just a warmth to this place that brings me back time and time again. Their menu is quite extensive and there's really something for even the picky eaters. The last time we were there, I made the mistake of ordering White Bait, thinking I would be getting some sort of fried fish, but when the plate of mini fish bodies came out, I couldn't bare to eat them. It wasn't even the fact that I didn't think I'd like them, but for whatever reason, I wouldn't even let myself pick one up, let alone put it in my mouth. Weird experience aside, the waiter brought me something different after seeing the panic and sheer horror on my face after realizing what I'd ordered. This update to my previous glowing review of Curlers unfortunately sees it drop down the star-ratings; from a 4* to a 2* Five of us descended on Curlers for Sunday dinner, having had good prior experiences here. Super-excited for a hearty feed, we settled in to a large table on the ground floor near the bar. The staff were generally attentive, friendly and helpful, but that's where the good vibes ended. Curlers is at the upper end of bar-prices - the only item under £10 on the menu being the burger (excluding toppings), and that was £9.95. Sunday roast dinner comes in around £12-£14 depending on the meat. Our group ordered the burger, and roast dinners of chicken and beef. Food arrived quickly, with the first thing noticed being the Yorkshire Puddings so overdone, they were essentially burned. The chicken was all on-bone wing/leg/breast affair - not what was expected... not everyone enjoys eating food off the bone; this should have been made clear on the menu. The beef was good however, nothing exceptional, just good. All of the roast dinners were served with under-cooked veg which was quite hard. Gravy had been poured over, with a couple of my fellow diners complaining it was too little. Gravy coverage is subjective, so it should really be served on the side. The burger was small, but okay - except the bun which was hard and stale, and was left uneaten. The accompanying fries were excellent however - hot and crispy; the best thing of all our meals. Far better burgers can be had in Glasgow for less money however. A final comment on the beers here - they seem to have reduced their range of cask ales, and charge a top dollar for others - £4.80 or a pint of Joker IPA is around £1 higher than elsewhere. None of us really enjoyed our meal, and not in the mood to complain we paid up and left to relocate to The Chip round the corner. At the prices charged, we all expected far better - the quality was that of lower-end pub grub charged at upper-end prices. The imbalance needs fixed! read more

The first time I ever went to Curlers must have been some 19 years ago. No, I was not of legal drinking age, but I was in the company of adults and was quietly snuck in and hidden at the back of the upstairs bar to enjoy a Coca-Cola before we all went to a comedy gig. This is only relevant because it marks me as one of the few people in my circle of friends that can remember Curlers before it was a Scream pub - heck, before upstairs was even proto-Uisge's bar Jock Tamson's (remember that, folks?). As a bar it has seen me through 16 happy years in Glasgow, and until a year or two ago, my fondest memories were of my student days when Curlers' Scream phase was relatively new. Yes, it was tacky and cheap, but at least good natured and welcoming with it. Towards the end of the Scream tenure, however, Curlers went downhill noticeably. The staff were miserable, the clientele frankly terrifying, the floors sticky and the decor...I will never forgive the idiot who opted to paint one of the stone walls (with embedded bonspiel) in with red rubberised paint, or whoever removed the lovely coloured and raised glass quarterlights in the stairwell. I accepted that I had outgrown Curlers along with my student days, and that was that. But then in 2010, something awesome came about. I'd noticed that Curlers had shut its doors for early summer, as it tended to do most years so it could powerhose the chlamydia off the dance floor in the absence of its student clientele. But when it opened, it was no longer Scream - and I could tell by the fact that the building wasn't painted in Scream's trademark eye-raping yellow. I started to hear that it was a nice grown up bar now - which was great, because I'm grown up now as well (sort of). On my first revisit I was unashamedly agog at the changes made during the refurb - and someone had cleaned the stone wall and restored the bonspiel! There were great grown up beers and great grown up food, and even better, nice people behind the bar who actually wanted you to drink in their pub! Curlers has settled into a nice solid rhythm now, and while occasionally there are wobbly moments (when it gets busy, the bar staff do get rushed, and it's certainly not the cheapest of places any more), they're far outweighed by the good points. I'm a regular again, thanks to commitments in the West End - I may try get a seat named after me on one of the big benches upstairs. And to keep this review up to date, Curlers currently have an Ox Cheek Pie on their menu, which is one of the best bloody things I've ever tasted. Seriously. Go try it and thank me later. Great, cosy, cute pub on a nice street in Glasgow. Came here for lunch and was not disappointed. The pub has such a nice warm vibe and everyone working there was very friendly. Lots of nice comfortable seating and loads of space for bigger groups. I ordered the fish and chips and a bloody mary which both came quickly. The fish and chips portion was massive and would easily be enough for two people. The mushy peas that came with were surprisingly good! Mushy peas seem to be quite bland most of the time but these were very tasty and sweet. The fish was fried nicely with a crunchy, crips batter. Prices were a little higher than some of the other places in town but it was worth it. read more

The place was literally freezing I really should have left but the bartender was good and told us to sit in the back where it's warmer. My 10 questions I always ask myself when choosing a bar: 1. Is this the type of bar where I'll be judged for wearing brown suede shoes with black trousers? 2. Will there be annoying drunk women? If so, will they interrupt me when I'm cradling a beer to ask me to take their picture? 3. Will there be annoying drunk guys? If so, will one of them strike up a drunken conversation at the urinals with "Awright big man? Crackin' talent in here tonight. The tunes are bouncin'!" 4. Speaking of which, is the puddle under the urinals gonna ruin my brown suede shoes? 5. What beers are on tap. Will I be judged if I repeatedly point at the taps and ask if it's "anything like an IPA?" 6. Is the music so loud that all my conversations will involve me screaming "What?" and getting an earful of spit? 7. Is this the type of bar where some Taylor Swift tune is blaring and everybody acts like it's ok to dance on the table? If so, can I get away with murder? 8. How far is the nearest police station. Would you say the police "respond quickly"? 9. Does the barman know a good lawyer? 10. What does good behavior REALLY mean? Phew. Great choice of real ale, cider and an extensive food menu.

I really like Curler's Rest, though I am somewhat prejudiced by it's extremely convenient location to my office. Essentially next door to Hillhead subway station, its location makes it a prime choice for taking visiting colleagues before they head back to town to catch the train home. Besides its unparalleled convenience of location (for me anyway), it's also a pretty good spot to grab a pint and some foodie-approved nibbles. I've sampled the mac'n'cheese, West Country burger, onion rings, and chorizo with focaccia, all of which I can recommend, but I have zeroed in on their New York Deli sandwich as my standard go-to. For a work day lunch, the NY Deli served with fries and a soft drink (or a cheeky pint) is just about right for a midday meal (filling but one starch short of a food coma). The NY Deli - pastrami, sauerkraut, emmental and dressing in toasted white - is a simple sandwich done right. Meaty and tangy with a smidge of spice, it really hits the spot. Just a caveat, in addition to jalapeños and other spicy peppers, I am whole-hoggedly obsessed with anything picked - from cucumbers to eggs to onions - so the heaping spoonful of sauerkraut goes a long way in making this my favourite Curler's Rest dish. The atmosphere and décor fall somewhere in the spectrum of classic pub and modern gastropub. There's lots of space and plenty of seating upstairs so great for a range of group sizes - from a couple to a family gathering of 8 or 9 or even 12 probably (if you call ahead). I have a favourite table but of course I can't reveal all my secrets :) The bar offers a very decent selection of Scottish, craft, and standard beer on draft (not as showy-offy as say Dry Gate but comfortably superior to your average Glasgow watering hole). Nice looking place. Good beers. Guy serving us was pure ignorant. Made a serious fuss about having to make an americano at 8 o'clock for my girlfriend. He huffed And puffed for about a minute then gave it to her. When she asked for a small drop of milk, he had An expression on hiss face like we had just insulted his mother. I have been here twice and both times the food has taken almost an hour to appear. Absolutely ridiculous and no apology from the staff. The food itself is passable but certainly not worth waiting an hour for. It's perhaps hard to objectively review the place because of these experiences but everything about it seems distinctly average. read more

My husband and i where looking for a nice bottle of wine and a light lunch,came across the Curlers Rest,sent in hubby first as it came across from the outside as slightly Old Man's Pub,Sorry old men,he came back out and said Yey looks fine.Inside i was surprised dark woods,fire very cosy,i was impressed.Went upto the bar and ordered a drink,guy behind bar nice and friendly,asked if we had been before,which we explained we had not.He told us about the place,showed us stairs,which has a nice dinning area which you can use for parties free. We then orderd some lunch,we thought the prices were fine,well filled sandwiches with fries,nicely presented,and just hit the spot,we ordered a bottle of wine,again reasonably priced. Toilets spotless,and there where a couple of families with young children,maybe okay w/k days. As i say did'nt know it before,but i would certainly visit again. read more

A nice pub, warm, good atmosphere and friendly staff. However, sunday roast was not good. It took around 40 minutes in what was a not very busy restaurant. Veg was a little cold and sad, nut roast was black on the outside and the vegetarian gravy had clumps of powder in it. The roast beef was also well overcooked. Good pub on Byers Road the interior is more contemporary than the exterior may suggest. A great range of beer on tap and a good range of bottles too (think this may have changed from earlier reviews?). West End prices, but it is worth it for the selection and surroundings. I like a pub that stocks less common, imported beer, especially like Curler's (Rest) where a beer menu explains the flavours and styles of beer on offer. Good job. read more

Curlers was a pub from my youth 25 years or so ago so it was stepping back in time for me I swear the tables were the originals it has a great welcoming, comforting atmosphere. Loved the touch of available board games at the bar. The food was excellent we had Roast Beef and veg' cooked to perfection, service polite, friendly and quick I would recommend Curlers for any age group I am bringing all my pals next time. Sure this is actually called the Curler's Rest. That aside it provided a decent spot for a couple of ales on Saturday evening. 3 real ales at least as well as the usual lagers & heavys on tap. Bar staff were pretty on their game, the seating was comfy, atmosphere congenial & toilets in decent order. The menu looked quite good so would be happy to return and try out the food. read more

As good as my memories of it as being a really good student bar in the West End, the only thing that sticks out is this: Holland 6 Scotland 0 The place was jammed that night - jammed with optimism and, I suppose, people who just liked the place. Typical student-orientated bar conviently located next to Hillhead underground station. As it is part of the Scream chain of bars it has their "standard" layout, beers and food on offer. Usual suspects on tap and normal 2-4-1 meal deals to be had. Nothing really unique about this bar, but it is ok for a meal + drink. read more

Went for an impromptu dinner & a pint on a Saturday night. The food was great - fish & chips done right and really well presented. The pub has a superb selection of beers - everything from the usual bar staples to more esoteric craft beers and ales. The staff were super friendly and helpful - even on a busy Saturday night.
