Can't say enough about the place. If you stop In Limerick you have to eat here. The setting is perfect, right across the river from King Johns Castle, and a covered outdoor patio with a view of the castle and Shannon river. The service was exceptional and fast. The mussels as an appetizer were great, soaking up the broth with the awesome brown bread was a plus. The chowder was one of the best I have ever had. Chunks of salmon, mussels and shrimp. My daughter had the fish and chips which were great also. Portions were large. The fries were the best we had in Ireland. If that's not enough the Guinness was also great. Tip: Go to King Johns castle for a visit and park in the free parking lot (which closes at 4:30). Walk across the bridge over the Shannon river for some great pictures and views. Irish food, particularly seafood, has come a long, long way since I was a kid. And the Curragower is a shining example of that progress. The chowder here is excellent, which blows my mind. As a New Englander from a commercial-fishing family I was nursed on chowders of every description. That combination of savory, creamy, heart-clogging goodness is something I simply can't live without. In the 90s I remember trying to explain the concept of chowder to my Limerick family. They were incredulous that anyone in their right mind would willingly consume a soup made of milk and seafood. To say they were revolted would be an understatement. Fast forward to modern Euro-Ireland and Jesus if this place didn't have some of the best chowder I've ever eaten. read more

Stopped in on the way to the cliffs because of the Yelp reviews. Parking was tight but available and we were pleased when we were offered additional seating upstairs. The bathrooms were clean and stocked. I ordered the wings and kids got the burgers. Absolutely delicious and highly recommend. Started with the calamari rings and a blue cheese and walnut salad with pears. For our mains we had an order of breaded scampi and an order of the fish and chips -- and we were both very happy! Curragower is a typical Irish place with lots of little rooms but it also has a nice, open terrace that is available to book for private parties. You can eat in the bar or just drink -- but the food is tasty and served nice and hot so make sure you ask to see the menu! read more

Stopped by here going to bunratty castle. Fish and chips were quite good. Chips were slightly undercooked but the fish batter was the best I've every had. Very crispy. Unlike many other fried fish I've had there is no spongy layer of half fried batter. The flaky batter went straight to a healthy portion of fish. Reason why I'm giving this place a 4 is because the chicken wings. Tastes like typical buffalo wing sauce with a more prominent spicy flavor. The chicken itself was on the smaller side and could have been more juicy. Also there was no crispiness to the skin or crust that characterizes better made chicken wings. read more

In a word, OUTSTANDING! I read the reviews for Curragower on Yelp and decided to pay a visit when I was in Limerick. It is as excellent as all the raves. To be more specific- attentive service and outstanding food. On my first visit, I ordered the much-ballyhooed seafood chowder. Stunning. Flavorful, perfect creamy texture (obviously from cream, not from pasty flour mixture), and chock full of fresh seafood- mussels, haddock, salmon, and more. It was also a generous portion. And unlike most rich dishes, I thoroughly enjoyed the very last bite as much as the first without that feeling of having overdone it. As others have noted, it's clear that the fish did not sit in the cream stewing all day long, but apparently was cooked separately and added just before serving. On my second visit I had fish and chips. It was quite good with the fish well-cooked yet without being dry or mealy. I had occasion to swing through Limerick one last time before leaving Ireland, and made a specific point of going to Curragower again. And once again, I ordered the seafood chowder. And once again it was mind-blowing. I've traveled a lot, and this is bar none, the best soup or chowder I have ever had anywhere at any price. In all three of my visits the service was excellent- attentive without being invasive, and cheerfully pleasant at all times. If for no other reason, the next time I am in the west of Ireland, I will visit Limerick just to eat here again. I might even try something else, but dang that chowder is the bomb! one last note- while their parking lot is very small, they do have one. But although it was full on two of my visits, I had no trouble parking for free along the road bordering the river. read more

Great fresh scampi and fresh fish! Oh my god the food was so fresh, there was steam coming out of the fish when my other half cut into it, just as it should be. The chips were lovely too, we thought that they were like posh chipper chips in flavour (high praise indeed!). Great food and friendly service. We enjoyed every meal we had here. By far the best seafood chowder we've had, full of quality seafood. The fish and chips was a perfectly fried, large piece of hake. They were kind to substitute the chips for a salad as I am diabetic. We also tried the buffalo burger, chilli and lime salted calamari and baked filet of salmon, all were cooked perfectly with fresh ingredients. Even their soda bread was baked to perfection. I stopped in here as my first place to eat in Ireland, as my wife had found it on yelp and it has a very cool view of King Johns Castle. After touring all around Ireland from coast to coast and back to Shannon, we generally agreed that Curragower had the best flavored fish and chips. Other than that, the service was typical and friendly, the out side seating is nice, but you have to grab a table under a heater most of the time, and if its raining, its a little tricky. Overall, a nice first stop when landing in Shannon. read more

Prime location right on the river, and perfect for the occasional sunny day to sit out on the patio area. Great for enjoying a bite, a pint and people watching after a trip to the castle. I went to this place two weeks ago while on vacation with my grandparents and sisters. It was difficult for us driving in Ireland as we are from the USA so I was hoping once we were done driving through Limerick it would be worth it. It was great! Helpfully there was a parking lot. The ambiance was a calm and quiet pub with a nice view of the river. We all got the seafood chowder which did not disappoint. The broth was perfectly creamy and there was so much seafood in it. The texture of the seafood was firm and fresh, unlike how in some soups. My sister also got chicken wings which came in a huge bowl. They were spicy and juicy. We ordered another batch! My other sister got a salad with a goat cheese and black pudding pastry. I am an adventurous eater and like most everything, but I'm not crazy about the texture or gamey/organy taste of blood sausage. With that being said, I enjoyed tasting hers because the flavors were subtle and bounced nicely off each other. Thomond Park... A fortress for Munster Rugby and a Mecca in the heart of Limerick for the fans that go their to worship their beloved Red Rucking Machine. However on a cold Thursday morning in light drizzling rain with the wind whipping up off the Shannon and a long drive from Dublin behind us. Myself and my crew work to make it ready for those who chose to watch the match from the comfort of their living room. This is a different ball game altogether. Lunchtime on these days cannot come quickly enough to get in from the elements and get some sustenance. For many years this was no more that a visit to the garage for a sandwich and a cuppa. All that changed earlier this year with a tip and some directions from a local about Curragower Seafood Bar. A small rustic pub on the banks of the fast flowing mature Shannon river it's an idilic place, which you would expect to be over run with tourists. Yet at lunchtime midweek it is relaxed, authentic, with great staff (who are getting to know us now), free WiFi of course and has a menu that many a 4 star restaurant in our nations capital would be proud of. Todays special was pan grilled trout fillets with new potatoes & cherry tomatoes, probably one of the best main courses I have eaten in a pub anywhere and certainly in Ireland. Dessert was (I did not get a name for it!) a bread and butter style pudding made with Crossant type pastry and white chocolate through it ...what can I say! Not something I would normally go for in the middle of the day but am I glad I did. With a good strong cup of well made coffee to round it off the total cost was €20 and change. Its a bit off the beaten track in Limerick but well worth it ...Oh and The Blue Grass Band there on a Thursday draw a great crowed creating a great atmosphere and a great way to end a long busy day after working in the elements. read more

The Seafood Chowder was excellent! Even though the place was packed, the service was very good. My only complaint is the Guinness want that good. Had a fantastic meal with family this evening. Excellent service! Chowder was full if fish and mussels, nice and creamy soup. I had the pan fried seabream with mash potatoes. My baby nephew was a wee bit tired so was a little cranky but the waitress was so helpful, even brought an extra bowl of mash potatoes.
