    Walleye

Had the Walleye dinner nice and crispy seasoned well. Comes with soup and salad bar which is very basic but a nice touch. Service was average. Note they charge 4% extra if you pay with a card.

It was ok. The staff was nice and the ice cream was good. Beer was fine. Spaghetti was just average. Salad was decent. The best part was the atmosphere because of all the old signs on the walls and other cool decorations.

Places to eat in this region are very few and far between. And for someone who has special needs (gluten free, diabetic), and wants/needs to eat healthy, even harder to find. Now add in, you want it to also be flavorful and home made...forget it! UNLESS... You know about The Dam. We travel thru this area a few times a year, and this place never fails to amaze. The soups are different every day, and are homemade by the mother of the family, who's 90 year old, and is passing down the gift to the generation who's running the supper club. Any soup, chicken and dumplings, split pea, vegetable beef, potato - they all are a meal in themselves. Phenomenal. Lunch has a wide selection of choices, salads, sandwiches (hot and cold), and dinner entrees. The buffalo chx is great! Dinners there's something every night that's fresh, and again, all homemade recipes - Friday night be sure to call ahead as its walleye night - huge portion, crispy and wonderful. Their buttermilk fried chicken is just like what I had growing up in the south. The Dam is A MUST for those of you looking for the "special spot" on the road trip, or just a reason for locals to stop in and say hello to the gang. They work hard, enjoy their clientele and do their best every day to please those that cross their doorway.

    Main dining room.

There was an unadvertised prime rib special the night we were there. The locals knew about it a d by asking we got it too. My wife and I split a dinner and we were both stuffed. Food quality was excellent. The blueberry pie was made from scratch and worth busting any diet to enjoy. Highly recommended.

My family loves to stop at The Dam every time we are in the area, attentive service, excellent food, and cozy ambiance.

Service wasn't bad. Food is average, used to be better in my opinion. They could definitely benefit by expanding menu options.

Loony's Brew is a laid back dive bar / pub located in the quaint village town of Ranier, Minnesota…read more To be more precise about Ranier, MN, it's situated right beside the once bustling industrial town of International Falls, MN...just 3 miles away. And, lol, in the bigger picture of it all, if you're visiting International Falls, MN, you're most likely in this remote part of Northern Minnesota exploring Voyageurs National Park. That's where it started for me. I had just completed time at Voyageurs NP and while speaking with a representative at the International Falls Chamber of Commerce, they recommended stopping here at Loony's Brew. Once in Ranier, parking was difficult, but I found a spot across the train tracks. I didn't mind walking 10 minutes over to Loony's as it gave me insight into what made Ranier unique...definitely a small town/local vibe as if I had stepped back in time. Loony's appearance on the outside reminded me of a simple summerhouse cottage along the waterfront with a dock in the backyard for accessing Rainy Lake. Overall, it's like staying at a lake house in the countryside. Although there's no official sign for customers to know they've arrived at Loony's Brew, there's a wooden post hanging by the entrance with a message stating...."PUB, BEER, FOOD, WINE, GOOD TIMES". Loony's has a playful/old fashioned bar kind of feel. You could sense the owners knew the specific tone they wanted to provide for patrons. The bar has an assortment of homegrown, locally brewed beers on tap....According to their website, they feature - "American, Hoppy, Belgian, Stouts & Porters, Fruits, Gruits, Lagers, NAs, and Barleywines". Loony's is decorated with classic guitars, vintage license plates and loads of symbolic mementos dedicated to their history. There's a back/rear section area featuring a billiards table, jukebox and dartboard. Situated all around are high-top tables and chairs. Plus, there's a small corner for showcasing local bands and musical acts. I ordered a beer, took it outside and walked across the street to the Brew Deck Bar area for enjoying views of Sand Bay beside Rainy Lake. The setting was pleasantly quiet. There's even a little pier where you can walk towards a rustic lighthouse. Overall, Loony's Brew is a worthwhile place to come after your discoveries at Voyageurs National Park. It's a no hassle, no fuss brewery that embodies the blue-collar town of Ranier, MN.
