Their lattes are quite good. Deliciously crafted and had the signature crema of a latte made by a true barista. I've had the iced coffee here before and it's also good, but not as good as their espresso-based drinks. The space is really cute, well decorated, clean and an enjoyable place to sip leisurely on your drink. Good place to check a little e-mail or the news as they have wifi available. They didn't have simple syrup and I'm not sure if that's always or just that they ran out while I was there. That would be my one caveat as simple syrup is important to have on hand for cold drinks and it's easy to make. Don't let this drive you away, however, this is a GREAT coffee shop...probably the best in Hatteras. read more

My family has been frequenting the Turtle for well over 10 years now and made so many connections with the locals as it's definitely where they go to get their coffee fix each and every day. We were told this is where the locals go so we decided to check it out. It's a very cute little place with a nice variety of coffee and espresso beverages as well as smoothies. I ordered an Irish Lover Latte (delish!!) and an everything bagel. The barista told me that they were out of everything bagels to which I was baffled as there was clearly a tray of everything bagels, right next to the trays of plain and cinnamon. I questioned the barista but was told again that they were out. Rather than continue to argue, I shook my head, paid for my latte and left. Despite my dissatisfaction with the incompetent staff, I did thoroughly enjoy my beverage and would recommend a quick coffee stop to anyone on the island. read more

Mediocre coffee at best, which is sad because it's the only place on this island. Excessively rude staff. Today one of the baristas loudly and rudely demanded the father of a family cover his face or leave the establishment, which he did without protest. There was no reason for the barista to treat a patron in this manner. There were no elderly present and everyone else had face coverings as well as glass that has been installed to "protect" their staff. These people have always been rude but I've always chalked it up to the fact that they see many tourists of varying temperaments during the season. However, this is no longer my opinion as they have taken rude to the next level and are using a pandemic as an excuse for rudeness. I have long debated creating an account on this app but after what I have seen today I was pushed past thinking into action. I left without ordering and I will not be visiting this shop anymore. read more

Driving along Highway 12 in late October/early November can be tricky. Trying to find tasty coffee along Highway 12, when everything is boarded up for winter can be treacherous. We were so thrilled to stumble upon this little gem! The Dancing Turtle Coffee Shop is located just off Highway 12 in an old converted house. It is all the things a great coffee shop should be. It has local art. It has lots of different seating areas. It has irreverent signs on display. I particularly loved the one that said, "Unattended children will be served espresso and given free puppies." The woman at the counter was friendly and helpful. We both ordered the Toasted Coconut Cream Latte. While we waited for our coffees, we helped ourselves to a game of Tic Tack Toe. They've got fun little games at each table. Our coffees were incredibly good. I seldom order a flavored coffee, but on this occasion, and with a name that opulent, I'm glad to say that I did! I loved every last drop. I'll definitely drop back in next time I'm in town. read more

They have gluten free items should you need them. I loved coming here and relaxing on their porch with a book and cup of freshly made tea (not from bags either!). They serve muffins, bagels, and some good-looking expensive chocolate bars. Wifi available, too. read more

I am a local on Hatteras Island and Dancing Turtle is simply amazing. I go there at least once each week, sometimes twice. I am always happy with what I order and I know that the helpful staff will happily fix your beverage if you are unhappy. The atmosphere is awesome and cozy. They sell incredible locally made art/pottery. The selection of coffees and teas is the largest on the island and the baked goodies are always yummy. The owner, Edie, is very friendly and always has a smile on her face. The prices may be higher than Starbucks, but you get what you pay for. The quality and atmosphere is much better than that of a chain coffee shop. I would prefer the Dancing Turtle any day! read more

The atmosphere and coffee were fine. I asked if they roast the coffee in-house. They said no. That's fine, too. Then I asked where they get their coffee from. The employee behind the counter said that the Owners don't like to tell customers where the coffee comes from. What? That's a huge negative for an otherwise charming coffee shop. Every coffee shop customer should be able to know where their coffee comes from. Just say "we partner with a distributor in location X" and I think most customers would accept the honesty and still appreciate the product and atmosphere. Again, the actual drinks were fine... We stopped here for coffee almost every morning on vacation. The espresso drinks were great, and my friend loved the cinnamon rolls. Other commenters mentioned the prices, but I don't think they were much higher than any other coffee shop. We spent over three hours here one day trying to escape the heat. I ordered an iced americano... It was poured out of a pitcher of pre-brewed espresso, and then watered down. Not even sure if it was espresso. Might have just been their iced coffee pitcher. An americano is made with freshly pulled shots of espresso. You cant make shortcuts with it. There is an obvious taste difference between fresh espresso, and iced coffee that's been sitting in the fridge for hours/days. This was after the man in front of me ordered a macchiato. The barista then asked him "do you want a starbucks macchiato or a REAL macchiato?" and went on to explain the difference in a very condescending manor. It was very off-putting. If you are gonna be an elitist about macchiatos, you should at least know how to make an americano. (I remember the same barista giving the same condescending speech about macchiatos to a customer last summer. Must be somethin he always keeps in his back pocket when he needs a boost of barista confidence). I thought maybe their espresso machine was down, so I went back a few days later and ordered another one. Same situation though. They also don't seem to recycle, which is a huge let down, especially since nearly every other business on the island recycles. Get recycling bins, quit making shortcuts, and stop being condescending to customers who keep you in business. read more

While on my drive through Hatteras, I saw The Dancing Turtle and felt it looked like a great place to get a cup of coffee. I walked in and it was a great looking coffee shop, complete with places to sit, a good selection of items to purchase and a variety of drinks to choose from. Sadly, I did not experience any of it as the lack of basic customer service was shocking and out of place in an area that is primarily tourist-driven. The woman behind the counter finished with the customer ahead of me and I stepped to the register. She never looked at me as she continued doing things behind the counter. About a minute later, another customer walked in and stood next to me. She reached for a coffee cup and smiled at him, handing him the cup. He handed her his cash and she made change, which she tried to give to me. She said "oops" and walked from the register to give the other customer his change. She then returned to the register, did not look at me and walked away. This could be a great place and the products could be great, but I will never return. How do you not serve or even acknowledge a customer standing in front of the register for about two minutes? read more
