On vacation in Cape Hatteras or OBX this is such a cool little independent shop it takes a couple of time to take in everything in has to offer. The vibe in the store is remarkable and very very laid back. They have offerings of ice cream, taffy, coffees, delicious looking fudge, along with other food items. They had something called a breakfast bread that looked so deliciously wonderful I had to buy it and try it and it was exactly as it looks it tasted remarkable. It was first made in the shop and all I can say is that again to the breakfast table with a group of people the next morning made for a lot of smiling faces. They also have knick knacks and souvenirs and various assorted other things in the store. This isn't to the point of being tacky but kind of useful that if you forgot someone in need to pick up a last minute gift to take home we can find something. They seem smaller than in some of the old photos and their coffee menu is reduced. We got two Sunburns (dark chocolate and raspberry). The description says it comes with whip, but the barista never asked and he served it without it. Aside from that, the coffee was good. Busy spot with decent fudge. It's definitely a tourist trap with limited chocolate and nothing seemingly made on-site (which is fine, but just a relevant data point for some people). Sadly, will never return. There was signage indicating they would be upholding COVID mask protocols but that was not the case. At least a few patrons were not wearing masks and the staff did not acknowledge or call them out. I was with my young daughter and was disappointed in the entire experience. Very rude cashier. She had a very mean demeanor and acted like we were a nuisance. We ordered 3 chair lattes but they only gave us 2. When we asked for the 3rd, she said "well I asked you guys if you wanted 3 chai lattes and you said 2." The chai latte was watered down and didn't have much of a taste after a few sips. I can make better at home. Also, they charge $3 for a small cup of tap water!! Crazy!! I thought tap water is supposed to be free! I stopped by after visiting the Kitty Hawk Kites next door with several family members. There are some really nice cups/mugs for sale as well as tons of stickers for phones or for cars. We ordered two different kinds of smoothies, a cold brew coffee, and rock candy to eat as well as several of the stickers. There were at least 5-6 employees working when we stopped by which seemed like too many when I first walked in. Our orders were ready so quickly that I then understood the allure of the shop being fully staffed. The wild berry smoothie specifically was delicious. Very efficient store. read more

I arrived at Forbes Candies & Coffee in North Carolina at about 7:13, having seen online they open at 7:30. I said Good Morning and made small talk to the woman outside, who after hearing I was there to acquire coffee and Informed me that the shop opens at 8 AM, invited me to come inside and opened the store early just for me. We talked and she made me feel extremely welcome. She was courteous, kind, and made me want to come back again, which I hopefully will. She made me 1 cappuccino and 3 mochas which I brought back to my campsite to my family. They were so well made and delicious. Loved this coffee shop in small town rodanthe without too many options, so expectations were low thinking it would either be touristy of just plain bad. They had the usual knick-knacks but also some good candy and decent stuff. It's next to another larger shop with those types of items as well. The pastries looked ok, not spectacular. However, the coffee is where it's at. They had tons and tons of different options with cool names and good flavors. If you don't like it sweet ask for just a blended cafe latte which was excellent. The regular coffee is good as well. Prices aren't great as expected but they don't gouge you too much. It's right next to the beach and a lite surfing place on the bay side that was nice. read more

We stopped at Forbes while visiting the OBX from Chicago area, we enjoy picking up local fudge & other candies when we're traveling. To say I was disappointed is an understatement, I have made better fudge than the 3/4 lb we purchased! And the woman helping us failed to mention if we purchased a pound we would get another pound for free. I'm glad we don't have two pounds of disappointment !!!! The only thing you can taste is the sugar!!! There is little cocoa flavor in it. The fudge was far from the soft creamy texture I had hoped for! Killian's in Lake Geneva WI, Uranus Fudge Factory or Richardson's in Richmond IL are still my favorites. Sorry we'll skip Forbes the next time we're in OBX. Stick with Salt Water Taffy!!! read more

Love this spot, the coffee shop is my favorite (iced Nor Easter is my go to ) and the Toy store is pretty great too. They have some classic toys and also toys that are different which you wouldn't normally find in a toy shop now days. Surf shop has some cool items too! We visited Forbes Candies and Coffee on a Friday evening after we had dinner at Good Winds. My husband and I were visiting Rodanthe for our wedding anniversary. I couldn't find out where to ask about their hours and their coffee (the order or pick up area wasn't clearly marked) so I approached an employee and asked her what time they opened the next day. She responded, "7 to 7." She was not friendly at all and didn't ask if she could help us with anything else so we decided to leave and try again in the morning. We came back around 9am on Saturday morning. Again, no one greeted us or indicated where we could go to order. There was another customer in the store and she said she had been standing there and no one had offered to take her order. There was a young woman behind the counter standing there and another one making breakfast sandwiches. I approached her, but she never said a word! I told her I wanted to order coffee and she simply said, "What do you want?" Had I not wanted coffee so badly I would have left. My husband and I placed our orders and two coffees cost over $11. The cashier asked me to sign the receipt, but the receipt clearly had no place for a signature...only a place to add in a tip. I signed it anyway and chose NOT to leave a tip. The coffee was flavorful, but the customer service ruined it for us. It didn't happen just once, but twice. read more

I stopped in to get a coffee right at 7 on vacation. The store is surprisingly cute--it was a lot nicer than the other Forbes stores I've visited on the Outer Banks. I ordered the Nights in Rodanthe drink (chocolate and mint latte). It was a little too sweet for my taste, but not bad. We showed up during a rush, with two large families ahead of us with each member picking out candies. That was fine, except only one of the two employees behind the counter was helping them. The other employee was working on something behind the counter so we waited until she finished that up, but then when she was done, instead of helping us she walked to the side and started looking at her phone. When she came back, I asked if it was possible to just get some muffins since that's all we wanted (weren't interested in any candies or we would have waited our turn behind the other families). Well she sounded very annoyed that we would ask for help and somewhat angrily grabbed the ones we wanted and shoved them into a bag and checked us out. While the muffins were very tasty and we enjoyed them, we were not happy about such poor customer service. If there is a rush and a long line is forming you don't go to the side and start looking at your phone while on the clock. read more

Went every morning at opening and stayed for about an hour. Nice outdoor seating and good view of Pamlico Sound. It is a great way to begin the day, sipping espresso drinks in the cool morning air.
