Last time we used Davey's services, their supposedly knowledgeable came over and noted all the issues. We wanted our tree--health to be improved. The arborist provided a list of tasks that needed to be done such as taking off branches that were heavy. Expensive chemicals were sprayed on flowering and fruit trees so that they could handle the trimming. That's what it was supposed to be--just trimming. Then came the tree choppers--absolutely unprofessional and unskilled labor who butchered my mature trees. Ever since all my trees have suffered. We love our trees like our babies, and this was a horrible experience. Cannot trust them. read more

Our house here in Brentwood sits on a steep grade due to the proximity to a creek. Unfortunately, the moisture from all of these storms this year caused a mature tree in our front yard to begin rapidly falling over. It became a safety hazard because people park underneath it, we live near school, and the tree was falling on to the sidewalk that people use to access a public trail. We got four different quotes and explored options to see if there was anything we could do to save our beautiful tree. Consensus was that air had gotten up underneath the roots and the tree was coming down one way or another. With that in mind, we felt that Patrick with the Davey Tree Experts was the most knowledgeable of all the arborists we had come out. He gave us insight into the type of tree we have, common problems with those trees, and he also researched a list of drought tolerant trees that we could plant in our yard as a replacement that wouldn't fall down in the future. He also handled all of the city conversations on our behalf since we have an easement in the front with a water main and sewer access right next to where a tree was. We are thankful that scheduling was very quick. I think they were able to come out in less than a week to remove the tree and grind the stump. Patrick also came out beforehand to mark the tree and wrap caution tape around it since it was falling. The speed at which they got the tree removed was really important because we just had a massive wind storm and I'm glad the tree was safely removed before it fell and damaged any irrigation or water lines from ripping out of the ground. Expedience was also really important to prevent getting any code enforcement violation for blocking a sidewalk. Of course we are sad that We had to remove a mature tree, but it was done as safely and efficiently as possible and for a reasonable price. We really appreciate that, plus the understanding and great service made the process so much easier for us. We contacted Davey Tree service for a few different reasons- maintaining tree health, tree trimming, removing dead trees, and thinning out and de-fruiting an olive tree. Patrick came out to do the initial inspection and to provide an estimate. He was great! He was very knowledgeable about many tree species, and he explained his reasoning and their process for the different suggestions, and we felt very comfortable moving forward with them. Their communication with scheduling was so easy, and their quote was very straight forward. They have been out to our home several times over the years to follow up and continue treatments and maintenance. Last week a crew came out for our olive tree (Salvador, Santos, and Fernando), they were AMAZING! They did such a beautiful job thinning out the tree with an artesian touch. We did not engage Davey Tree to trim our tree; in fact, we had already had it trimmed in late winter, but SoCalEdison contracted this company to trim trees in our neighborhood to ensure the safety of the power lines--a respectable purpose. One of the gentlemen dropped by on a Friday and scheduled with us to take a look at and possibly trim the tree the following Monday (the tree is in our fenced backyard, and we have a Great Pyrenees, not a dog with which to be trifled, so we had to be home). We had explained that we didn't think it would be necessary, but we were open to some trimming. A day later, a different worker from Davey knocked on the door to schedule a trimming. It would seem that the Davey team are not talking to one another. This is annoying, but not the reason for such a low rating. No one showed that scheduled Monday, but a Davey worker stopped in three days later to apologize and re-schedule; he explained that he didn't have our number, and so couldn't call to cancel. I did express frustration and reminded him that he did have our address and might have dropped a note at our door, and I worry that this might account for the aggressive cutting our tree suffered when the Davey workers did finally arrive and "trim." Initially, we were told that the trimmers would create a six-foot buffer on the side that faced the power line, but what happed was a twelve-foot gap and our tree was laid bare to the bark--no branches or green remained through the middle section of the tree. It is not only unsightly, it has created an imbalance in our 60-foot tree, making it heavy on the side that faces the house. The trimmer explained that because poplar trees grow so fast, this aggressive trimming is necessary for safety and will make it so that they may not have to return the next year . . . safety required six feet, but twelve feet is more efficient, more cost effective for Davey. To their credit, when we called Davey and asked to speak with a supervisor, one did come to meet with us. Although there is nothing to be done for the tree at this point, he explained that rather than the severe cutting they had done this time, they could, in future, trim twice a year with a less heavy hand and that he would make a note of it for us. I guess we shall see. We have had this tree for 24 years, and it has been large enough to require trimming for at least 15 of those years, but we have never seen it cut back so harshly by either the companies we have hired or the companies contracted by Edison. read more

I've have had an amazing experience so far with Davey tree. Patrick has been very informative, and has been very responsive and attentive to my questions and concerns via email and phone. I don't know much about trees, and Patrick has been very helpful throughout this process of helping me with my trees and getting the nutrients needed. Seems like I'm kind of an outlier, but I really have nothing to complain about. Our street in Oakland was planted long ago with trees that are not native, and not super-well adapted to California climate. They survive, but most ended up with unsightly dead branches among live growth. One neighbor organized getting a tree trimmer to go down the street and cut all the dead branches off. Davey came in as the lowest quote -- our share for the one tree in front of our house was $300 plus $75 to fertilize the tree. I didn't have to deal with customer service, so no comment here, but they showed up on time, and the actual trimming was competent and thoughtful. Our tree had dead branches resting on wires going to our house -- phone lines, I think. Going in I was like "I don't know how they're going to get those branches out of there without breaking a phone line". The answer was: very carefully, with a cherry picker. Through a window I watched the guy work for maybe 10 minutes of the 30+ he spent on our tree, and he looked like a hairdresser doing a $75 haircut on a green giant with phone lines in their hair, moving this giant cherrypicker around the tree multiple times with uncanny familiarity and speed, making thoughtful decisions on where to cut and not cut. In the past we have been very happy with Davey Tree. They are not inexpensive but they had been professional and thorough. That changed this May when they trimmed three large oak trees on our property. The results looked good but then for two weeks small to medium branches that had been cut rained down on our cars and driveway. Even my neighbor commented on the branches falling onto their property. When contacted, Davey offered no apology. When I spoke with the arborist, he said he hoped I was happy with their work....UH, NO. They also just showed up to do the work without setting an appointment. If I had been home at the time I would have sent them away. Will look elsewhere next time. read more

Davey Tree came to our home and did an estimate on cutting the dead branches on the two large ash trees that WC city planted on the hell strip over 25 years ago. I was assured they would be able to get all the dead branches. It's hard enough paying for maintenance on a tree we didn't plant, also having to be proactive maintaining it so that doesn't cause harm to anyone/thing. I was even told once by a WC maintenance worker that black ash trees never should have been planted here. Anyway, as you can see by my pictures, my trees look terrible! Heavy long barren branches, leggy, several obvious dead branches missed. The trees look more dangerous than before. Over priced and poor service. I'm so bummed. Had another issue with Davey several years ago. A neighbors invasive Mexican pepper tree was growing so far into our yard it was blocking our satellite dish. On windy days the branches tore the wires from our house to the telephone pole. I asked the neighbor several times for help but she didn't care, she rents the house. I hired Davey to trim all the branches back to the line of the fence. Same guy assured me that the one really huge branch would be cut in such a way that the branches would grow another way. Within 6 months that damn tree was even happier and grew 3x bushier. I ended up paying another tree cutter that happened to be working on someone else's home in the neighborhood $50 cash to cut the monster branch. It's been 2 years and I have no problems. read more

I really like Davey Tree. I have used them three times. The gentlemen I worked with Felipe from the San Ramon office in the East Bay. Every time they came they did an awesome job and when they left every single thing was cleaned up. I have had our giant tree in the front yard trimmed after 4 years. It was so over grown and it had cable lines and PGE lines running through it. I have also had a giant Yucca tree cut down and a HUGE palm tree that stretched up into the sky what felt like 100 feet. The truck arrived on time, the arborist was wearing mask, he knew his craft, informed me about the products he was using. He worked about an hour or may be little more, going through very systematically around each plant. He was very professional. We used Davey Tree's Plant health care treatment.They used their slow release fertilizer to all the shrubs in front, side and behind our house. They also did an anti-fungus treatment to our Japanese Maple Tree. He told me that I would see results in about 2 months. I was very pleased how the work went. Dave Nelson from Davey trees came out to take a look at our trees in the backyard. He was here for about 30 minutes. He seemed very pleasant and said he would let us know within a few days what the estimate would be. I waited for a week and then decided to call him. I left a message on his voicemail. I waited another week with no call back so I called the company. I spoke with a very nice lady and explained my situation. She said she would try to get ahold of him. Another week goes by so I called again and spoke with the same lady and she said she didn't know why he was not calling back and she would talk to her supervisor. Another week goes by, I called for the third time. WHAT IS GOING ON??? I really at this point just wanted to know why he wasn't calling me back. I think he finally got a message from the supervisor that it would be a good idea to call me back. He left a total BS story that he was on "vacation" and said nothing about the estimate. At this point just tell me why you have been so dismissive? This is a terrible trait to have. I would never refer this company to anyone. So unprofessional. These guys are the worst workman we've had on our property & thats really saying something. Missed window of appointment only to show up randomly & stared working. Tree work was poorly done. Branches which were supposed to be cut weren't cut and visa versa. Also when they left they neglected to clean a huge mess leaving our front yard in dangerously unsafe condition. We hired Davey Tree to trim a large elm tree in our backyard. A few months later a huge limb from the tree fell off. We called Davey Tree back to ask if their work was guaranteed and if they could come over and clear the limb. They said no, their work wasn't guaranteed and never followed up with us to fix the job they did. We ended up hiring another service to clear it. They said the tree wasn't properly trimmed. If Davey had responded, we would have been open to negotiating but they blew us off. We took our business elsewhere. read more

Davey Tree was contracted by PG&E to trim the trees on our easement. This being the only interaction we have had with Davey, I was intrigued to see how they conducted themselves because we have some trees in our backyard that we need to take care of, and this was the perfect opportunity to see first-hand what it would be like if they were to work with us. I was RUDELY disappointed. We had no real warning of when they would be at our home, and they woke up our tenant, who is renting a room from us, and refused to give her any information. No names, and no insurance documentation. This would not have been an issue, but we had our car parked right where they needed to trim. They refused to come back, even though she expressed concern about potential damage to the car from falling branches and debris. The only response they would give her is that PG&E would be responsible for any damage to our vehicle, and to call PG&E. Based on their lack of respect, rude behavior, and disregard of our personal property, we will NOT be using Davey Tree for ANY of our future needs, and I would not recommend them to any of my friends. read more

My homeowners association get a report from Davey to look at trees in the neighborhood. They reported that they needed to correct improper pruning that had been done to our tree. Now I need to fight my HOA to get their baseless report corrected. Our trees have always been properly pruned. Watch out for scammers who want to drum up business. I'm writing this three months late so I don't have names. The estimator not only knew the genus and species of our tree but he identified a number of my neighbors trees and seemed to be the most knowledgable employee of the services I got bids from. He explained the cause for the dead parts, a bacteria, recommended a treatment and stressed it was not 100% certain to stop the infection but would add some years to the tree. The tree in front of our house needed a lot of trimming and cutting out dead wood. The Davey crew showed up about half an hour early, two trucks, three workers, plus the man who gave us the estimate. It took then about half an hour to set up. The foreman informed me they were breaking for lunch. I immediately felt better. I'd rather have a well fed rested crew climbing around my house than guys who are hungry and rushed. After their lunch the crew worked a solid three hours with out slowing down. When they were finished there was a lot less tree out there. The street and front yard were immaculate. Two days later an other, very knowledgable man showed up to do the bacterial treatment. He explained what it was, what it may or may not do. He didn't bring his lunch but he worked did work quickly. I'm always pleased with honest assessment and top notch crews which Davey sent. I'll use them when I need them and until recommend them to friends and family. Thanks guys. read more

OK, Here's the thing. These guys are supposed to be "the best" - you know, expensive, but you get what you pay for...but man, they messed up this job in ways (I'll detail them for you, so don't worry). And suffer from "front-man-itis" (that is one nice, competent helpful "front man" who sells you on the business, but leaves the work to his less competent - and sadly often non-english speaking - crew. Here are the boo-boos: 1. They destroyed the sealed drainage system that we just had installed, then left it open to the elements, so that wood dust, , etc could get into the drain - they do realize this is tree removal, right? 2. They were dropping the branches so hard it set of the gas shut off value (you know, the ones that prevent a gas leak in case of an EARTHQUAKE) 3. They dropped a branch on the wood deck, destroying a part of the railing. This at least they manned up and paid for, which I appreciate. 4. when I asked specifically, on multiple occasions, to cut the the trees so that the stumps are LEVEL TO THE GROUND...well, they didn't, and now there is a walking hazard by the side of the house. Nothing against Davey Nelson, who seems nice enough, but there is simply no way I would use these guys again. read more

I did read all the reviews which is disappointing. I must say my dealings with this company have been fine. Joe came out because a neighbor's tree was killed by beetles. Since I don't know one pine from another, he could have told me a lie, I wouldn't have known. Even doing research on pines, they all look the same. Anyway, he was very honest. Said my 3 pines are not very susceptible to most Calif.beetles. He also spent time telling me how to keep them healthy that I as a homeowner can do by myself. He told me the truth and knew there was no sale because my trees r safe. That's very important . Yes this company is owned by the employees. Yes they r commissioned by pg&e and do get complaints when working for pg&e because the trees r being cut not by the owner but for pg&e. This is the worst possible tree service in the area. Today they butchered the sycamore tree in front of our house. They have a contract with the City of Oakland to remove branches that could fall on a line, but what they do is hack and cut a huge ugly V in the tree. They left debris on the ground and some on our roof. As we have had to do in the past, we now will have to hire a competent company to try to shape the tree properly. I called Davey because I wanted an established, professional company who could handle removing a grove of eucalyptus trees on my hillside property. I had previously tried to use some smaller companies but they couldn't handle the work. Driving around town, I had seen Davey trucks and it looked as if they had the correct equipment. I felt so relieved to think I could call a professional tree service and finally get these dangerous trees removed. I looked forward to getting the work done. So I called Davey. Well, when the time for the appointment for the estimate came, the guy called up. I asked if he was on his way. "No, I'm over here in another town. I just wanted to know how many trees are involved." I explained there were about 20. Well, that seemed to be a problem for him. He explained that Davey couldn't handle a job involving 20 trees. Davey could only handle small jobs, of like 5 trees. No only that. The guy explained that I would surely pay much more by using Davey. In fact the exact expression he used was "by orders of magnitude." He stated over and over again that "Davey is certainly not the leader in terms of best price." He then explained that Davey was the world's largest tree service. But because they were such the leader in the field, so professional, that I surely wouldn't be a match for them. Surely I didn't want to use a professional tree service. Nope, I should go get some local guy, someone who was cheap, and use them instead. I became confused. Soooooo, Davey is the world leading tree service (I see their trucks all around town, including cranes), but they can't handle more than a few trees? Wait. What? After just a minute of conversation with they guy who was obviously not at all interested in doing the estimate I concluded that I should take him at his word. He was, in fact, doing me a favor, saving me all those many thousands of dollars I would have spent with them. I certainly didn't want this great big company who is only willing to tackle little jobs to have any of my money. I would much rather give my money to people who have a much more positive attitude. I will be using another tree service and I hope you do as well. read more

I've had my tree trimmed by the Davey Tree Expert Company for the last three years and the last time was in March. COVID19 hit and when I received the bill for $1,260 I was only able to make a partial payment due to a decrease in earnings. I received another bill and was again able to send a partial payment on May 11, letting them know that I was in a difficult financial situation due to COVID19 and hoped they would understand my paying the balance of the bill over the next couple months. Well, I received a letter from the company today May 22 informing me that if the balance due of $630 isn't received by 5/29/2020 my account would be sent to a collection agency. I am shocked at the lack of understanding being shown to me during such a difficult time, especially since I am paying on my account and it is obvious I intend to pay off the balance and was just asking for more time to do so. What a horrible way to treat customers! I will pay the balance and never use their service again!! read more

This company was hired to trim some trees at the bottom of my street. they completely blocked off the road, making it unable for me to get to my home. the workers were rude, refused to let me through or show me the permits they supposedly had to close the city street. originally i asked why they did not have a detour sign up or something to alert people that they had the entire road closed. the worker said they must have forgotten. i asked when i'd be able to pas and they told me that they'd be finished by tomorrow. This was ridiculous and im still upset about it today. i've called the owner of the company on three different numbers and no reply yet.... read more

Though Davey Tree did great and amazingly quick work on two MONSTROUS trees in front of our house, they left behind a massive pile of mulch in a tiny space. Originally we were just annoyed that we had to call them again to pick it up. Then when someone finally called me back, the district manager, he nicely told me that it was in the contract that they leave behind the remnants of the stump drilling to "spread around" the area. I explained to him that a rather obscene pile was left in front of the house, not just an inch or so, as would be reasonable. He told me that he could have his guys come out to remove the pile, but it would cost us an additional $340 at least! After I picked my jaw up off the floor, he said that he would drive by and see the pile, then see what he could do. He said there were people who may want the mulch and he'd make a few calls.. A week later, still no phone call. I wish I could post a picture of how large this pile is, suffice it to say that after at least 2 weeks of stomping on it to get to our cars, it's still about a foot and a half high, and runs the length of two cars, concentrated between the curb and the sidewalk. In addition to this review, I placed a sign on the heap announcing who left it there, until we can shovel it away ourselves. Which will take a few weeks, given that we have only an 'Organics' bin to fill up that is emptied once a week. It would have been perfectly reasonable to leave a few inches of mulch behind, cool, that's the contract - I would have even let a little pile slide. But it's also perfectly reasonable to assume that the guys would look at how much they were leaving behind and wonder if THAT amount were reasonable. The work was done between 8AM and 3PM- great work. Which would have earned 5 stars, but the left overs are pretty miserable. read more

I can't give a review on their services because I was so put off at their very high pricing I didn't end up using them! I received 5 estimates from various arborists, Davey Tree was by far the highest pricing. I have a friend of the family who is a retired arborist, he told me not to accept any bid over $2,000 tops - Davey Tree's estimate was $500 over that! I suggest they take another look at their competitors and bring their prices down to something more reasonable. read more

Davey Tree was on our driveway to work on a neighbor's property and managed to drive over part of our newly landscaped garden in the process. They park wherever they want with out making any requests or showing any respect to the client or neighbors. Apparently they've been working on a "one day job" for three days now. Davey Tree guys cut down 6 Oaks along my street line, in the way of the electric lines. Those guys were very efficient, pleasant, fast-working, talented, strong (!), accommodating. I had an Oak tree in my back yard on a steep hill fall a couple weeks ago when there was high wind. I called a few places and couldn't get anyone to come out and look at it. I then got a response back from Davey and the guy had shown up that day. Joe the rep walked me through the process of how they would take the rest of the tree down and remove all the wood. He quickly gave me an estimate and we scheduled the day of removal for the following week. The crew came out on time and were done in a few hours. I even brought them something to drink while they were removing my Oak and they were all so polite. I gave them 5 stars because you pay for what you get. The whole process from meeting the rep Joe, going over what needed to happen, to the removal and follow up from Joe was great! I would go with Davey as its a long time well known company. read more

I contacted Davey Tree for a cost estimate for tree removal work on my property. The cost estimator was approximately 30 minutes late for our appointment (minor inconvenience but not a huge problem). He promised me a cost estimate by the end of the week. After four weeks of waiting and numerous voice mail messages, I still have not received a cost estimate and have gone with another company who was prompt and professional. I had them out about a year ago to trim 4 very tall old pines in my backyard. They were not the lowest bid, but I was impressed with the sales pitch (employee owned, etc.), they seemed to have integrity and know what they are doing. Everything went well except a low branch was left hanging that soon cracked. They recently took care of it after I complained, and I'm happy with the resolution. read more
