After calling 5 companies, interviewing and getting bids from 3, we went with The Desert Root, and while there are many reason why we are glad we did (see below) the main reasons, start to finish was their great communication and follow-through. This was my second backyard complete renovation (demo, irrigation, pergola, plants, tress, garden beds) that I'd hired out for since moving to AZ in 2007. The landscaping company I hired in 2007 to do my first home was great to start, but slowly stop calling me back as fast once 2 of the 3 payments were handed over. The work was okay, but unimaginative. That was NOT my experience in hiring The Desert Root. Tara came out and listened to my vision, wants, made suggestions and was very open to letting me take over some of the things so I could save a little funds. They worked to use up the materials on site from the previous owners and we loved that approach from both a reduce, reuse, recycle standpoint BUT also it saved us a little money. Tara, Tony and all the fellas on the crew worked soooo very hard in the middle of summer, but never once looked like they wanted to call it quits early. The Desert Root was the tidiest landscaping crew I'd ever seen. Each tool stacked and cleaned alongside the house, out of the way, and tidy at the end of every day. Nothing was ever left mid project messy. We were already so happy with the work half way through the custom garden beds they designed, built and installed, the grass, the wall garden, that we starting to talk about adding an extra project to the end of the job. (Now I wanted a subpod composter and another bed) We added that part on, and the crew continued to be skilled, friendly and very happy to "talk plant and garden" with me every time I went out to "play" in our new garden. Their first sub-contractor fell through for the pergola and I think Tara was more upset than we were, which felt nice so we didn't have to take on pushing that. She worked tirelessly and stayed in constant communication as she got us on the schedule in enough time for our housewarming. whew! After a month we noticed one of the trees was suffering. Tara had Tony come out a few times to check on it and we all kept watching it, hoping it would make it. It appeared to be a goner (things happen, I've done this before) but it was still under warranty per the agreement so they came out and replaced it, the new one is doing just fine now. One thing we also loved is how Tony truly took a lot of time to help us understand the new smart irrigation system app, how to program things and he also showed me how to run more irrigation drip lines, punch the holes and gave me some spare parts so I could do those types of things myself since I love to garden aka add more plants! We've already had them back to make a little side walkway using some old pavers, again they came in, worked hard, tidy and fast but took the time to chat with us when we'd step out to "oooh and ahhh" at more new things in our space. To be clear, the backyard is stunning. It stole the show of our housewarming party even though the entire inside of our new home had a major renovation as well, it was the backyard space that was the talk of the night...but, the fact the yard is stunning is not why we are glad we picked The Desert Root. It is because we feel it's in the things you can't see... the communication, how they listened to our vision and budget concerns. The tidiness of the crew, Tony's easy to see in his grin love of plants and trees as he talk about trying to save the tree if we could, it's Tara's easy style of working with us, unfussy but professional. We texted them often with questions and have no doubt that we'd hire them again (if only we had a bigger space). read more

I found this company on Yelp, and I hope my review will encourage others to consider The Desert Root for your landscape redesign. This is a high-end landscape design firm, but willing to work with all size budgets. We recently redid our formerly all-gravel backyard, including adding a paver patio with pergola and lighting, children's play area, and multiple plantings. Tara, lead designer and co-owner, worked with our budget to give us everything we wanted, provided multiple suggestions to keep costs down, and incorporated many of the materials we already had. Despite how busy this company is, it felt like I was their only client as I received prompt and constant communication in response to my multiple questions and design changes. We ultimately ended up with a beautiful design and unique and unexpected plant selection--nothing cookie-cutter about Tara's esthetic! As far as the construction, I echo what the other reviewers have said: the crews were efficient and absolutely delightful. They worked extremely hard every day, and we got lots of pointers about plant maintenance and our irrigation system. The entire experience - from initial meeting to final walk-through - was surprisingly fun and not stressful as undertaking big home projects can tend to be. Thank you, Desert Root team, for transforming our backyard! The team installed a sprinkler system in our horse-back riding path, sprinkler system in the backyard, planted fruit trees, and laid down sod in our backyard. We also had a subterranean trampoline garden installed. The trampoline garden had to be deeper than previously built gardens due to my husband's height. Tara, Tony, and Gaige solved the dilemma by creating a stunning staircase into the garden. The team carefully listened to our plans, made helpful suggestions and completed all work in a TIMELY manner! We are amazed at the transformation in our small yard. In preparation of laying the sod, they meticulously groomed the area and laid the sod. The team even utilized our pavers and brick garden edger's around the sod and fruit trees. Tony and Gaige even placed frost cloth on the young fruit trees, not many companies have this degree of personal interest in their work! We recently bought a house in Gilbert with a large lot, with a pool, that had been neglected for quite some time. During my initial meeting with Tony, he made very practical recommendations on how to bring the yard back to life while taking into consideration my desire to not rip the mature landscaping out just to be able to start fresh - as other landscapers recommended. They maintain my pool and yard so they were thoughtful on the maintenance moving forward since they will be keeping it up. All in all, they've brought my landscaping back to life and reseeded the grass; coordinated a RV gate installation and laid a parking pad; repaired the sprinkler system; and now we're looking at their misting system! I was greeted by Tara on the phone and from the gate was absolutely professional and helpful. My husband and I needed a large amount of landscape work done, which included new plants, more gravel and extensive lighting upgrades. I wanted more desert plants, but I still wanted it to be lush and inviting.They were so knowledgeable about plants for the southwest and had great suggestions. They did everything, in the time they said they would, and better than I could have expected.
