Dr. Bice openly told us he doesn't trust pitbulls and that he likes German shepherds better! We were wanting to have our elderly pittie seen. She is excellent with people but he did nothing for her and even said how "lucky she was to be taken care of"! Veterinarians are not supposed to show a bias against certain breeds like he did. They are supposed to treat each animal to the best of their ability, showing compassion. Dr. Bice showed NO compassion and didn't take care of our dear pittie. I was saddened and as a CVT was especially disappointed in Dr. Bice. read more

I have had two of my cats get dentals at The Desert Vet during recent trips to Hurricane. The Desert Vet is family owned and very reasonably priced. In addition, I have been thoroughly impressed by the service received and the care that my animals were given. When my first cat had her dental, Dr. Bice and I chatted for about 20 minutes about her condition (stomatitis) and the plan of action (remove almost all of her teeth). In addition to being thorough, he was kind and listened to my concerns. My only complaint is that we don't have clinics like The Desert Vet near me in Arizona! read more

On May 15, 2024, my small terrier mix dog, Joey, was viciously attacked by a bigger dog who grabbed him by the neck & shook him leaving a large tear on his neck. I immediately called the veterinary office I have used for 4 dogs for 5 years. They said they couldn't see us. In a panic I called Desert Vet & they said to bring Joey right in! They took him right in to see a doctor. Joey came home several hours later after being anesthesized to clean the wound, staple it closed & insert a drain. I've never taken the step of writing a negative review online. My experience compels me to do so. My interaction with Dr. Bice was profoundly disappointing. I'm posting a review with no personal animus for him, but rather with significant distress over my experience at his practice and his communication with me as a client. My cat received a dental at his office in Oct 2019. A canine was removed, a "wiggle-out" extraction. Some seven to eight weeks later, my cat stopped eating, with full anorexia two months after his dental. I subsequently incurred over $3,000 in emergency hospitalization and oral surgery costs in St George to provide supportive life-saving therapy and then to remove and repair infected jaw bone, tooth root and soft tissue in and around the original open extraction site. A consulting vet during emergency care expressed concern that the cause of my cat's anorexia was likely a "botched dental." They noted what looked like "foreign body material, a bone fragment or infection" at the opening of the canine site. They urged I schedule oral surgery as soon as possible. Deep infection was indeed found. My cat returned to eating immediately following corrective surgery and has recovered beautifully. After two unanswered attempts to reach Dr. Bice by email, I phoned his office. My written "ask" had been that he "help me please in whatever way he can." I expressed that I would be "understanding and grateful for a gesture" of help to ease my financial hardship. I had outlined my cat's medical developments and my concerns with clinical steps not taken by his office (that I have experienced as standard protocol at other clinics), and included a photo of the corrective surgery done. Our phone conversation was brief. To the best of my recollection, this is a factual accounting of his comments. He stated that he was "offended" that I would ask for his help with cost reimbursement and equally that I would believe he should assume any degree of accountability two months after the initial dental was done at his office. "I do not have any liability." He questioned my honesty in reporting what a consulting vet stated to me was their clinical concern. "I question whether my friends (at the clinic) would have said that." He stated, "I do not have the emotional energy" to engage this further. He went on to say, "any further communication on this will need to be between your lawyer and mine." Moments later he stated, "You should not have incurred veterinary costs you couldn't afford." My response to that statement was a simple one...it wasn't a question of incurring costs that I couldn't afford, but rather incurring costs that were medically and urgently critical. He additionally stated that if I had come back to him, my cat's followup care would not have cost so much. As for returning to his office for extensive oral surgery to remove infection...I would challenge finding anyone who would have felt reasonably comfortable doing so given circumstance. He concluded, "I will not ever (never) reimburse you for any costs." The call was deeply unkind. Dr. Bice demonstrated a remarkable lack of compassion, to say nothing of personal and professional grace. Of all the ways he could have responded -- from expressing genuine care, asking what he could do to help, offering to reimburse the very modest original dental bill from his office, to helping defray a portion of my emergency costs incurred in St George as a gesture of care -- he was instead combative, defensive, dismissive and extraordinarily disrespectful. I have always had close, positive, trusting relationships with vets over decades of routine and specialized care, including dedicated dental practices. This was a first. I should note also that immediately following my cat's dental at his office, I phoned Dr. Bice concerned that my invoice showed a rimadyl injection had been given post-op. I had learned from previous experience that rimadyl is known to be toxic to cats. I consulted with a half dozen vets to confirm my understanding, each stating that their clinics hadn't used rimadyl for cats in many years due to its known renal toxicity. (The only place where it remains labeled for one-time post-op injection is in the UK to my knowledge.) Dr. Bice again raised this with me derisively on the phone, perhaps as an example in his view of how "offended" he is by my close attention to care. I would urge clients to consider carefully before consulting him. While he may be more affordable than other clinics (and that can be an important service to a community), my experience was very distressing and gives me significant concerns with his practice. The way he responded to me speaks best for itself. As I said to him at the end of our call, the karma is now his to carry. Professionally and personally. Every time I've come in they just dismiss my concerns with my cats and send me away with antibiotics. I took my cat to the emergency vet two weeks ago where she was diagnosed with pneumonia and I brought her in to desert vet for a follow up because she was still struggling to breathe and they just sent her away with more of the same antibiotics that weren't working and wouldn't even do an x-ray to check on her lungs. I brought her into Zion vet for a second opinion and her lung is getting worse and I need to bring her to a specialist because it could be cancer but I would've never known because they just dismissed my concerns and wouldn't do anything they could to help my cat. read more

The receptionist didn't acknowledge me and continued a phone conversation for 15 minutes and when the second receptionist came out I asked her for a printed prescription to avoid having to wait again she said the in today despite the Dr waking past me as I waited. When i asked her about the Dr walking by She stated that wasn't my dogs vet. This staff made no efforts to communicate with me and then sent me a letter to my home stating, find a new vet and states reason " She didn't like our communication style". They actually got that correct. I prefer to be acknowledged and communicated with when I'm the paying customer. read more

Rude phone lady I made an appt but the lady on the phone didnt want to know anything abt my dog his name, breed, age etc. or even my phone number. How are they going to call and remind me of the appt without having my phone number, how are they going to know about what my dog needs before I arrive without getting any infomation. The person on the phone maybe she was brand new or wasn't trained properly, maybe she was going thru issues of her own. But if you are not able to do a job nicely maybe take the day off. Still absolutely love these guys! I bring my fur babies here for their vaccines. And when we have puppies, Dr. Bice does the dew claw removals. I think it's great that they don't charge an exam fee for removing dew claws or for vaccinations! I've also brought my dog here for an ear infection and with the exam and meds it was less than $60... I picked up a stray animal and called this vet for advice. About an hour later, the vet called me. He gave me as much time as I needed and he heard me out, addressed a couple of my concerns fully and clearly, and generally came across as friendly and caring. I truly felt the Dr. cared about my animal and my family and I appreciated his willingness to take time with me regardless of whether or not I would ever come in and give him future business. This is the worst vet I have ever been to. I have had animals my entire life and have been to several vets and I can say without a doubt this place is the worst! I made an apppointment three times specifically with Dr. Bice and was told repeatedly it would be Dr. Bice until I show up and it's some random other guy. I have been there 3 times, never was a vet tech present, they do not take vitals even on sick visits and do not weigh your cat. I have never had that before. On one visit, my cat had a scab looking lump on his neck. Dr. Menke (not Dr. Bice as promised) said it was just a scab and was almost healed and nothing to worry about. I had another appointment scheduled for same cat and another cat as well for well checks with Dr. Bice (or so I was promised but turned out to be a LIE!) a month later. The scab thing never did go away and I needed it rechecked and I was concerned. I ended up walking out when I did not get Dr. Bice as promised for the third time! I have no faith or confidence in the ability of this vet and not only will I NEVER again bring my 4 cats there but will make sure I tell everyone I know of the unprofessional lack of caring and I can not trust a word that they say! Now I know why it is easy to get an appointment there. There has never been anyone in the waiting room when I have gone in there. read more
