Every bar/ restaurant should have the maître d of this place. she is lovely, attentive, unpretentious, and made sure we had a nice drink in hand while we waited (it was busy with not much space- be warned). the waitress was lovely too. we had a really good window seat for two, except my seat had a hole in it which was the only issue. It only bothered me a little; I like my bars raw and ready. also, I think the toilets could have been a little cleaner, but not bad. the food was great, good choice for vegetarians. couldn't finish it despite really wanting too. the cocktails were exciting and innovative. I had the Cornell Parker, a 'hardshake' milkshake made with bourbon, vanilla ice cream and peanuts, it tasted like Reese's peanut butter cups so had enough after five sips but they served up two cup's full for the price of one! the amaretto sour with blueberry's was wonderful. would go again. read more

Proper American diner. The portions are not US diner size which is a good thing. Went there for lunch on Sunday. Highly recommend the lumberjack breakfast and eggs florentine. I was lured here on a lazy sunday by the prospect of an "authentic" American brunch ... and i am happy to say that i was not disappointed. The menu is sufficiently american (at least you get the stuff you get in New York). So if you are craving for blueberry pancakes, this is a place to go to. More importantly, unlike in USA, they have "short stack" options for pancakes ... so even non-Americans can order a full plate of food and eat it rather than waste half of it :) I ordered a lumberjack breakfast ... 3 pancakes with maple syrup along with bacon and 2 eggs ... turned out to be a good decision ... good food and very filling. If you order a coffee, you get free unlimited refills ... the first time i have seen that in London. How cool is that !!! :) It was surprising to see that the price of the milkshakes was £4.20. Too much ... but i still ordered a banana shake. When it arrived i realized why it cost so much. It was humongous ... a huge tumbler full of the shake ... more than double the quantity you get in other places in London. I could finish only about half of it and asked them to give me the rest of it in a takeaway glass. This is where they lose a star ... i will never understand how could a glass full of shake become only 1/4th glass full in the transfer process ... pretty clumsy in my opinion. The food was reasonably cheap ... with each of the breakfast dishes at between £5 - £8, it makes for good value for money. I will surely return here. Were they busy, yes. Should it ever take a restaurant 15 minutes to have the bar "make" me a tap water, no. Staff is nice but this place could do with a fair bit of management. Food was hit or miss, cheese fries couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Overpriced and overwrought. read more

Hmmm. I was so excited to go here, i love anything American. The menu totally got me excited, i went for some chili fries (hello how Saved By The Bell) and a Cobb salad. Although very American, i wasn't overly impressed with the quality of the food. I went back the other day, i craved a milkshake and I've heard they're the best. It was okay, not going to lie i drank it so fast i was nearly sick. We only went here because it was 30 feet from our front door, and we were with non-yelpers. Don't let it's semi-busyness fool you, this place basically sucks. The fries look great (thin) but are undercooked mush (why is this a pandemic) and had no taste. Their pathetic "large" milkshake could easily all fit in the small glass, but they insist on bringing the practically empty steel container just to rub it in. My burger was NOT dry (second star). Every ketchup bottle within a grenade's radius was empty and the our waitress, once hailed, left the three other water glasses empty after she filled mine. Knock yourself out doubter. read more

I'm being generous when I say that my last meal at the Diner was close to total junk. I have lived in the area for 12 years, and have eaten at the Diner several times over that period. I can say unreservedly that you should avoid eating here. The food is DREADFUL and gives UK cuisine a bad name - even when we're trying to copy simple American diner food, we can't get it right. Go eat at any number of greasy spoons nearby - Franco's on Rivington Street springs to mind - and you'll get MUCH better food, for a fraction of the price. The Diner charges criminal prices for junk. Not good junk, cheap nasty junk. We had to send our "Diner Fries" back as they were inedible. My partner's burger was awful, as was my halloumi burger. Seriously, guys. Step up your game. read more

Two words: HARD SHAKES! Ice cream is awesome, alcohol is awesome, together they are EPIC. Before The Diner, I didn't know alcoholic milkshakes even existed. Talk about fun getting buzzed... Their regular milkshakes are also good. Also, this was the ONLY place that had non-gross hot dogs. Not like I'm in constant need of encased meat, but British sausages are gross and mushy. The Diner has delish hot dogs that aren't a sad tube of mush. For those two reasons, I find The Diner worthy of four stars. read more

Hmmm... very much a Hoxton in with the in crowd joint. The waitresses are zippy and cool, the food is errr.... distinctly average and far too expensive for what it is really. Miss the chilli, go for the hot dogs because they are a traditional diner staple despite the fact that they are made from unspeakable bits of dead animal. Nothing exciting ended up here by default ... Wanted to go to meat liquor but the line was way to long to wait in , then I wanted to try Pit cue but it was closed for the night so in frustration and hunger we stopped here.. My first eatery since I got to London... We landed in time to see Athletics at the olympic park and ended up coming here for lunch after a friend had suggested it. The 8 of us crammed into their biggest booth. So with elbows in each other faces, we started to cram burgers and hot dogs and fries into our mouths. As a vegetarian, the Diner wasn't my first choice of lunch venues, but my meat starved friends dragged me in on one hungover rainy Sunday afternoon. If you're in need of a carb injection, this is the place to go. An impressive selection of hot dogs, burgers, & chips, as well as salads, spicy bean burgers and smoked salmon & cream cheese bagels to keep the vegetarians happy. Not to mention milkshakes and all American beer. Next time I go in I'm going to have to try the Banana bread beer... The staff were friendly enough, although I got the feeling our waitress was on the verge of quitting so she wasn't too chirpy. Great for novelty value, helps control the urge to escape to New york, gives you a bit of America in London. And the food ain't bad either. read more

It's nice and a reasonable price but didn't blow me away. I had a Mexican breakast with baked eggs which was tasty but lacking a bit of spiciness! The Diner Caesar salad was absolutely atrocious. Some of the ingredients listed were missing (anchovies) and the croutons were diced dry burger buns. I felt like I had been given leftovers. The avocado consisted of 4 tiny cubes of avocado, would have been the same to not add any avocado at all! And for £10, what an absolute ripoff. Shame on this business for allowing itself to scam customers like that. read more

The first waitress we had was incredibly standoffish, and I guess she decided we weren't worth the bother, because she sent a replacement. and he was okay. Went here on the recommendation of a friend and I was not disappointed! After a long morning of playing tourist (and I am a bad tourist because I would rather sit in pubs than make my way around museums!) I parked my tired limbs and ordered the pancakes. Ave Maria and all the saints, they were good. It could be that I haven't eaten gluten for a year (hey, a gluten allergy doesn't count on vacation, right?) but these fluffy disks of comfort food hit the spot. As full disclosure we didn't have a full meal here, but in future I definitely won't be. This place seems like a pretty standard fairly up market American diner restaurant and serves all the usual fare. We would have gotten burgers here had we not eaten them elsewhere beforehand. We all got good-sized milkshakes which were quite enjoyable. The fries were passable but the mayonnaise that we had to request almost tasted off. The mac and cheese seemed to be 95% cheese, with no actual flavour or texture. Just endless melted samey cheese. The cheesy fries seemed to have exactly the same cheesemagedon on top as the mac and cheese. The corn on the cob was extremely salty and the lack of any prongs to eat it with made it messy and inconvenient. This stuff seems hard to get wrong but that's somehow what happened. The music is varied and interesting and the desserts look pretty decent, but from what we experienced, the rest of the food is mediocre. The presence of a jug of tap water with no actual glasses to drink from sums up The Diner pretty well: promises much but fails on delivery. read more

As an American relocated to London I was so excited to find this place after craving food from home for a few months. It was expensive and not worth the money. The Philly cheese steak wasn't even really remotely close to what a cheese steak should be and the chili cheese fries were soggy. BBQ chicken burger was good, but not worth a trip back. After the meal the food sat like a lump. Pretty much what you would expect from a chain "diner" in a foreign country. read more

I discovered The Diner on Curtain Road whilst living in student halls on nearby Pitfield Street. Whilst not particularly student friendly in terms of price it is an experience I would definitely recommend, the retro decor and read leather booths re-creating that all American eating experience (including free refill coffee!). The menu consists of everything you could ever imagine ordering at a typical American diner, from the obligatory hot dog and fries to burritos, corn dogs, chili dogs, milkshakes, and the ever-present mystery that is 'wet fries'. They also have an all day breakfast menu, serving blueberry pancakes, fried breakfast and a whole host of other dishes that probably aren't all that good for you but taste delicious. As I mentioned before it isn't cheap, which is the biggest downside, but then London is expensive, and its worth it for the experience at least once. The service isn't the best, and with the staff's non uniform policy you'd be forgiven for thinking they would be more at home working in the American Apparel store across the road, but it's fun nontheless, and situated as it is in London's pre-eminent hipster district not bad for the odd bit of celebrity spotting - we sat across from Klaxons on what must have been their day off, and Alexa Chung is a well known regular. read more

There is only one option for a main meal vegan. I respect that traditionally diners are American style restaurants that embrace piling up eggs, meat, butter etc and I didn't come in to change that. But I don't understand why a slice of avocado, with absolutely nothing on it, a thin slice of orange, melon and 3 grapes (3!!!) and, 2 half mushrooms topped with tastless spinach topped with 2 50p size chickpea "patties" is a good excuse for breakfast, compared to what this restaurant serves in their meat breakfasts. It's really doing food almost insultingly. read more
