I'm giving them 5 stars because they're doing a 5 star job at what it is they're doing. Let me be clear....this is a dive bar/biker bar located in what most people would consider a very bad part of town. They keep the door locked and you have to knock and someone will let you in. I'm not sure why this is, but I suspect its to keep the nefarious types who may linger around in this part of town from barging in and causing trouble. It's a popular place for bikers. Like old guys with motorcycles who drink whisky and shoot pool. They do a bit of kareoke in there, they've got a few pool tables, a jukebox, and a tv or two so you can watch a game if one happens to be on. Drinks are ridiculously cheap...but don't go in thinking you're going to get Johnny Walker blue, or Don Julio. I believe Old Forrester was the top shelf, but hey...you order a Manhattan, and you drink it. It costs half of what it would anywhere else. Definitely a neighborhood place, with a neighborhood crowd. But the handful of times I've been here everyone was as cool as could be. Best beer in the house is Guinness, so don't get all snobby about your beer. This is the kind of place where you go in and fit in to what they're doing. Don't try to make them adapt to you. Its an experience. Go for it. A dive bar/biker bar in a seedy part of Bessemer. Get out there. Live the adventure. Meet some bikers. You'll be glad you did. Again, not 5 stars because they're a top of the line fancy place. I'm giving 5 stars because they're doing great at what it is they do.

The cook's name is Joseph and he knows how to season. My only complaint was that it's a bar at night so still smoke filled during the day. I noticed a LOT of outgoing orders. My husband couldn't smell the smoke until we got into the car together, but I have asthma, and I could. He had meatloaf with black-eyed peas and collards. No seasoning needed! And it was $7 and change-we will go back. This is my second visit. It won't be the last.

The first time we waited around 15 minutes at a table before anyone acknowledged us, and the second time was basically the same experience sitting at the bar. Friendly service definitely wasn't the strong point here either. That said, the food honestly saved this review from being much lower. The wings had a fantastic sauce with great flavor, the fried pickles were crispy and addictive, and the fried green tomatoes were genuinely delicious with a really solid batter. Even the beers were ice cold and crisp, which fit the vibe perfectly. The biggest issue is that the pricing feels a little high for the overall experience and environment. If you're charging those kinds of prices, the cleanliness and service really need to match it better. If you're coming strictly for fried bar food and cold beer, you'll probably enjoy it. Just don't expect attentive service or a polished atmosphere.

The Brown Bag Restaurant in Northport has been a staple for good eats for as long as I can…read moreremember. I can't tell you how many times people have recommended it for lunch, yet I never managed to stop in and experience it for myself until today. My work schedule and the Bag's hours always seemed to clash, and since it's a bit off the beaten path, it stayed in the "out of sight, out of mind" category. Now, as I'm approaching full retirement, I finally had the time to swing by and see what all the fuss was about. Upon arrival, the first sign you're in the right place is the parking lot. It's packed, about like a blue tick on a hound dog. Stepping inside, don't expect anything fancy. The interior is old school with faded paint and a no frills setup. Your food is served in Styrofoam containers with plastic utensils. But that's part of the charm. Who needs fine china when you're filling your gizzard with good soul food? The place was full and I managed to grab one of the last open tables under the roof. I then waited for the waitress who was running laps across the dining area, taking orders, refilling drinks, checking out customers, and handling everything in between. If you come anywhere near lunch hour, don't expect Jimmy John's Freaky Fast service. You're here to slow down and enjoy the experience. When I ordered, I went with a catfish fillet, turnip greens, field peas, fried green tomatoes, a side of cornbread, and tartar sauce for the fish. The fried green tomatoes did not make it out with the order, but the waitress was very apologetic and adjusted my bill to a meat and two instead of a meat and three, which I appreciated. Now to the important part, the food. The catfish was hot, crispy, and perfectly cooked, not greasy at all, just honest, well done Southern cooking. The turnip greens and field peas were flavorful and comforting, exactly what you hope for in a place like this. The tartar sauce had a slightly sweet twist that I was not expecting, different from the traditional version, but surprisingly excellent. I will need a few more visits before I can fully put that into words, but it worked. Overall, now I understand the buzz. The Brown Bag delivers exactly what it promises, simple, hearty, well prepared soul food served without pretense. I will definitely be back, and now that retirement is on the horizon, I have got all the time in the world to wait on a good meal, unlike you working folks still rushing through lunch.
