    Chicken omelette
    Steven M.

The food was good and the service was ok. I ordered the chicken omelette no beans all rice but it came with the beans. The chips and salsa are good. I ordered off the lunch menu. I asked if they had flan but no.

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants is Taqueria Mexico. Tonight my friends and met up there, only to discover it's no longer Taqueria Mexico--The restaurant is now called Las Garzas. I recognized the staff waiting tables--the same crew from the prior establishment. The menu is no longer umpty pages long. It's just 4 pages, which made me worry they'd removed some items. It looks like most of the food from the old menu is on the new one, only minus all the photos and detailed descriptions. I did see that the queso fundido is no long on the menu. Instead they have "cheese dip" which is NOT the same thing. Also missing is the Hawaiian ribeye, which I guess makes sense, since Hawaii is about as far from Mexico as you can get, but dang it, it was so good! We asked our server if we could still get the queso fundido. She said, yes, but I don't think she ever understood that we were actually ordering it, as it never came out. Sadness descended on our table. I wanted the Pollo a la Parilla, the mesquite grilled half chicken that I've ordered several times before. I didn't see that on the menu but they had "grilled chicken." I assumed that was the same thing. It wasn't. Turns out I'd ordered sliced chicken breast over salad greens with slices of avocado. It tasted well enough, but it was nothing like the mesquite grilled chicken I was used to. More sadness. The combo plate (traditional Tex Mex) was fine, and the sopes were okay, but not good enough to overcome the Table Sadness. I'm not saying we'll never be back, but this is no longer my favorite Mexican restaurant. There are other favorite dishes from the old Taqueria Mexico that I want to keep getting, assuming they made it to the new menu.

    Plenty of seating @Las Garza's.

I have been wanting to try this restaurant out for a few years. I initially went on the first day…read morethat they open but because I was craving a margarita and they didn't have their liquor license yet I ended up going across the street. So this has been on my list and I finally came here on a Thursday evening with my son. It's at the end of a shopping center where a Walmart is. We got there about 5:30 PM. It was not busy at all. We were promptly greeted by a hostess that sat us in a booth. We started off with the chips and salsa, but on the menu it does say after two baskets they will charge you for the chips and salsa. We only had one. The chip could've been a little thinner. It's rude to find a raspberry margarita so I wanted to get one unfortunately they didn't have any frozen ones. They were just on the rocks. I was pretty shocked when I looked at the receipt and saw that it was $17 for a Margarita and it definitely wasn't worth that much. It had kind of a weird taste to it. We did get the cheese dip and it was very delicious. I decided to try the Mexican lasagna, which was so delicious. I got it with the beef and it was layers of ground beef, pico beans, and possibly some rice too. It was a good portion and I ended up bringing the other half home. My son ended up getting nachos with shrimp, chicken and steak and he really enjoyed it and finished his whole plate. I will definitely be back sooner than later because I love some good Mexican food, but I will probably end up getting just a soda next time. Fernando was our waiter and he was very attentive. I will say the restaurant in the bathrooms were clean. There's only one bathroom each for men and women. I would think it a restaurant this big they would have more stalls.

I also learned they've made the exciting move from being a food truck to their own brick-and-mortar location. Congratulations on such a wonderful milestone! I ordered the quesabirria tacos with a side of chips (the chips don't come with the meal). The tacos are served with consommé and a side of refried black beans. Everything was DELICIOUS! The food was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. I'd give the quesabirria a 9.7/10. The only thing that would have made it even better for me would have been a little crispy cheese crunch. The salsa, which I had to request, was a bit spicier than I prefer. But then again, my son recently informed me that I'm a spice wimp... or something to that effect. So take that review for what it's worth! Not only was the food fantastic, but the service was friendly and FAST. The atmosphere is laid back and welcoming, and they even have a patio if you enjoy outdoor dining. Congratulations again on your new location! I'll definitely be back.

This time, however, I decided to try the quesabirrias, and unfortunately, they were disappointing. I also ordered a horchata, which I didn't think was very good. The biggest area that needs improvement is the customer service. I would describe it as average at best, and in some ways, closer to poor. I understand that no one is obligated to greet customers or wish them a good day, but when you're paying for a meal--especially at a place that isn't exactly cheap--you at least expect to be treated with kindness. During my visit, no one greeted me when I walked in or when they came to take my order, and overall the staff didn't seem very welcoming or attentive. While I was waiting for my food, I asked if I could get a little more horchata. The employee simply replied, "No, you have to buy another one." I responded, "No, that's okay." Honestly, if the horchata had been really good, I would have gladly paid for another one. It wasn't so much about having to buy a second drink--it was more about the way the situation was handled. Small interactions like that can make a big difference in how customers feel. I truly believe this restaurant has a lot of potential. If they improved their customer service and showed a little more warmth and empathy toward their customers, it could easily become one of the best Mexican restaurants in Birmingham. The food has potential, but the overall dining experience also depends on how customers are treated, and that's the area that still needs the most improvement.

There is plenty of outdoor seating along the street and on a side patio. Dogs are always welcome in the outdoor areas. Indoor seating is also available, and there is a full-service bar. Today I had the Shrimp Taco Plate. The two flour tortillas are topped with three large grilled shrimp. The shrimp are then topped with pineapple mango salsa, cilantro-lime crema and Tajin seasoning. I thought the combination worked very well, and would recommend it. The Margaritas are good, and I especially like the Tajin rim.

The odd thing I saw tonight was that the restaurant allowed or at least didn't say anything to the table next to us that brought in pizzas from Vecchia next door.
