For 30 years, I have stopped at the Donut Shop on my way from Ft Polk to Laurel and on the way back for donuts. My last stop there may be my last stop ever. I've had better 3 day old donuts from Walmart than the last batch from there. The only comparison I could make would be if the donuts had been made from French bread dough, left out overnight and glazed the next day. I threw 3 dozen less one away. Unfortunately for my cardiologist, I don't live close to this place. I stopped by in route to Houston and have only been once but the glazed donut was hot and splendid. My hamburger and the Kaiser role that accompanied it were nearly culinary perfection and it came out in less than 10 minutes. They even offered to throw in an extra donut for the wait time. This was one of the most spectacular eating experiences I've had. If you take a glance through my reviews of other restaurants, you will note that I do not give praise lightly. The Donut Shop is a little roadside stand. You will get a great burger, a bun that isn't an afterthought, crisp curlicue fries, well-made tamales, and donuts that approach their Platonic Form. The key to this place is to go with at least one other person. You order the burger plate that comes with fries and drink, another single burger, a side of half dozen tamales, and once you finish what you can, you each get a donut. Their filled donuts are FILLED TO ORDER. Consider that a for a moment. What I love is that this place is fairly impervious to foodie innovations in donuts and burgers. Honestly, they don't seem to give much of a f*ck about such affectations. These are not "re-invented" donuts with surprising fillings, nor are they pretending to be something gourmet. Those are all good things, mind you. But there is also something wonderful about a place that, without any pretension, sells you what you donuts were decades before everyone became so self-conscious about the fanciness of our comfort food. In the course of eating this ridiculous spread on the shady picnic tables outside the shop (there is, so far as I can tell, no indoor seating), we encountered a few locals. One old guy with no teeth sauntered up from heavens-knows-where and chatted with us about the shockingly high price of potato chips at gas stations. He was a character. I grew up in Natchez and have always known that The Donut Shop had great donuts and hot tamales. Unfortunately, I have moved away and have discovered that their donuts aren't just great, they are THE BEST and it's impossible to find anything close to them anywhere I've tried. The last time I visited home I tried their hamburgers and... WOW. I also brought home 2 dozen tamales and 3 dozen donuts for my husband and kids (3 hours away) and the food was devoured by the next day. Not even a trace left. The people were very friendly and I love the fact that it is a small mom and pop business serving quality fare at a good price. If I ever visit Natchez again, I will return and maybe another star will be earned. We liked our donuts - coconut with lemon drizzle, oreo, and cinnamon roll. I didn't get the largest cinnamon roll, trying to exercise restraint. It was good, definitely better than chaini donuts. Another diner there had picked up a burger and fries and said their regular food was awesome. The woman behind the counter was super nice and friendly (who isn't in Mississippi?) Definitely worth the stop if you're in the area! I've tried a couple of their doughnuts and all have been fantastic. Favorite was probably the glazed buttermilk cake doughnut. I've never had a kolache ("kalachie") that was hard on the bottom and it's not an experience I'd like to repeat. Aside from that, it tasted okay. The "chocolate" icing on the eclair had barely enough cocoa in it to turn it light brown and just tasted like plain glaze. The custard was unexceptional and the donut was chewy.
