Unfortunately, after some other minor incidents, he ended up starting a rumble between his "pack" (him (chocolate lab) another lab, a poodle, a beagle, and some other small dog), and another pack (rotweiler, rotweiler/shepherd mix, and a Doberman). Needless to say, the dog walker wasn't too pleased with him. She came to the house after work the very next day with a handful of phone numbers for other dog walkers. In short, Rusty got kicked out of his play group for being bad. Enter Mike Monahan. We called Mike and invited him over to talk and to meet our dog. He came over and not only had a list of references, but he also had a copy of his business license and proof that he was bonded. I didn't even think about being bonded, but it was a nice touch and indicative of his seriousness about being a good dog walker. Mike has walked Rusty for 5 years while we are at work, he has done a great job. When we cross paths, Mike is the nicest guy on the planet, and he loves dogs. That's what he loves to talk about: dogs. He has on occasion walked Rusty on the weekends when we needed it, and he is very reliable. If you call him to do some dog walking for you, tell him that Rusty sent you.

We got a 10 week old labradoodle, and our walker bailed on us two days before she was going to start. We found Mike after a slightly frantic search, and he was great. He so obviously adored our pup, and it was clear he really enjoyed being around her (and all dogs I'm assuming). He was very reliable, and was always in communication. He always did his best to be flexible, and was very easy to work with, even though he wasn't close to our neighborhood. I even offered to pay for his parking, but he insisted he'd be fine finding street parking. We only worked with Mike for about a month while our pup needed solo walks (because she wasn't fully vaccinated), but she was always tired and well taken care of. He called me every day after her walk to let me know how she did. Mike was great.

The only thing was, I had to find a place for the Superdog, aka Ty. Our regular sitter, before only used for 3-day weekends, was charging upwards of $800 for 3x/day walking sessions--WAY out of our budget! Damn, if we could afford that we'd take ourselves to Maui, right? So I called around and found some dog walkers from Craigslist. This particular service, Mick's, sounded good and pretty reasonable, so I called four of their references. It totally checked out. I make arrangements with Mick over the phone and a time for him to meet my dog, and we're good. Then, several days before we're due to meet he emails and says he's busy but his associate will do the dog sitting. Okay, I think, kind of unprofessional but as long as it gets done... When his "associate" shows up a week before we're due to leave for Maui, I open the door to find a woman with a purebred, un-neutered Golden Retreiver who barges into my apartment and she barely even glances at my dog; instead, she keeps an eye on her own (breeder) dog so he doesn't "mark on the carpet"--uh, ok. First, I'm not a proponent of breeding. Shout out for all the shelter dogs! Second, spay and neuter, people. Spay and neuter. Third, she tells me to use a prong collar instead of his Gentle Leader. Eh, I'm a proponent of animal rights, not human-induced suffering. Third, for God's sake, don't bring your own dog to a dog-sitting interview. How frickin' unprofessional can one get? So. The rest of the interview is decent; I wouldn't normally go with this person but she'll keep my dog safe enough and I'm stuck. I'll be gone over Christmas and any REAL dog-sitter has been booked for months. Then, two days later I'm at the dog park with Ty when my phone rings. It's you-know-who. "I'm not sure I feel comfortable walking Ty," she says. Ty has issues when other dogs come up to him and try to steal him tennis ball. This was clearly explained in my first phone call to Mick. I freak out inside but calmly say, "he'll be fine on-leash; please don't tell me you're backing out--my flight leaves in two days and everyone else is booked." To her credit, she works with me but is clearly not used to working with actual dogs who have actual personalities. Realizing that I'm going to have to cancel my trip to Hawaii because this woman is not going to take care of my dog, I frantically look up pet-sitters online. The first one I find, Pet Camp, I call. It so happens that they have one opening for a large dog over New Years. I call Micks and gratefully cancel. Petcamp is awesome and Ty loves it there...but that's another review...

I'm a bit evaluative and analytical, and tend toward over-researching decisions like these. I took the time to interview and test out a variety of dogwalkers, boarders and trainers; I called all six references Jeff provided to me after we spent an hour (yes, an hour) talking to him at our home. Add to this a crazy love for my dear dog Emerson, and I'm a pretty tough customer. Jeff is fantastic with his dogs, AND with their owners. He clearly loves his dogs, he loves our dog, he is a consistent leader and caretaker for his pack, and I learned quickly that I can trust his judgment on the fly. My dog is notorious for eating all sorts of things he's not supposed to, and Jeff lets me know each day (sometimes every day) what he kept Em from eating, and what he succeeded in eating (as well as any funny stools that followed). One day Em ate a few foxtails. Jeff put his hand inside Em's throat to retrieve what he could, called me immediately from the park, and jumped into his van with the entire pack to meet me at the vet. He shared a detailed account of what happened, brought the foxtails in that he retrieved, and we were able to get the xrays and treatment done immediately. He considers this all in a day's work. He's also been a very willing partner in reinforcing the training and custom care our puppy has needed. Once you have a dog, you realize that finding the resources you need can be tricky: Some dog people are great with dogs, but not with people. Or they presume they know all there is to know about dogs, and won't say "I don't know" and refer you elsewhere for the right help. Or they're in it for a living, but aren't interested in customizing their care for your animal. Jeff is a rare combination in that he has the passion for the animals, he knows how to interact well with them, and he is a responsible, trustworthy, intelligent, communicative guy. I get the feeling Jeff could make a living however he chose, but I'm so glad he chose to care for dogs.

In fact, it seems that almost everyone here has a pup. Thankfully, the walls are thick and are made of concrete and the units are amazingly quiet. I try to walk Barry as much as I can. Barry is my frenchie/puggle. I feel bad for the little guy during the days when I have to work all day so I asked around to see if anyone had any ideas for day care or something. Someone told me about Posh Puppies and gave me the ,now famous, pink flyer. Everything sounded good and I didn't even know dog walkers could be insured?! Barry is now taking for a walk 2 times a week. Great service. Great price. I thank Posh Puppies for all the help and I know that Barry is very thankful too.

I had posted a 5 star review for Pawsitive Strides previously, but took it down a couple of months…read moreago. Since then, I do feel compelled to share my experience with Pawsitive Strides and why I no longer recommend this service. I had hired Lamu to care for my senior toy poodle for a week in July, and the first experience was pretty good! It's evident she's a dog lover and gave my dog a lot of cuddles. The only issue we had was that she had promised to text videos/photos and updates every day. There would be long periods between texts and we didn't receive regular updates or daily photos/videos as promised. This was not a deal breaker, though it was interesting to see that while she wasn't sending updates to us, she was adding regular photos of our dog to this Yelp page! We had to text repeatedly... "Is he ok?" because she wasn't communicating, so it helped us realize where her priorities lie when seeing a bunch of pics of our dog on here, while she left us on read! We hired her for dog walking as well and dog walking might be ok. We canceled after 2 walks because we had a hard time getting confirmation/responses from her. The main concern happened the second boarding stretch in September we hired her for. We asked her what time to drop off the pup, and she said 4 pm. We were there a little before 4, and texted/called her multiple times. It was over an hour later until she responded. She had fallen asleep. This is wildly unprofessional behavior. Imagine if we'd had a flight to catch. Because she had done a decent job with the July boarding, we let this slide. During his September stay, we again had issues with responsiveness and lack of updates. He's almost 16, partially blind, partially deaf, and not great with other dogs. He has an old injury from an ACL tear and is small - 9ish pounds. Because of all of these factors, we told her repeatedly in person and in writing that we don't take him to dog parks and are very careful with his activity levels and interactions with large dogs/puppies. We explicitly stated "Do not take him to dog parks" and "Please keep him on leash at all times - he has been attacked by large dogs in the past." Mainly, we just needed someone to care for him, mostly at home, and not endanger him. The reason I'm giving 1 star is because she took him to a dog park and threw his tiny tennis ball. Apparently, a large dog grabbed the ball, demolished it, and then bit Sgt. pepper on his head in 3 places and scratched his eye. The worst part was, she did not tell us ANY OF THIS. She dropped him off and provided his destroyed ball and said another dog destroyed it, but withheld all details of his attack. As we got him settled back in our home, we noticed his eye was scratched and really red, and quickly noticed the 3 bloody scabs - 2 on his head and one on his neck! We texted her a couple of times asking what happened, and still she never responded. This behavior is incredibly irresponsible, so you can understand why I'm giving a 1 star review. I don't want any other pups to get attacked and injured under Lamu's care, so I'm hoping folks reading this review will take caution with hiring her. Perhaps if it's just for a short walk around the block, it might be ok. But in terms of boarding or long-term care, our experience is that Lamu is not responsive and does not follow critical directions, which ultimately led to our dog getting attacked. Her failure to communicate this to us is a huge red flag. It took weeks for her to finally bring back his belongings she'd forgotten to bring when she dropped him off. I had to text her constantly to ask her to bring back these items. I would encourage folks to look elsewhere and avoid this service at all costs.
