This place is overrun with hipsters. Drinks are too pricey and they used the bottom of the bottom alcohol to make them. I had one drink and find myself hung over the next day. A new full bar to hit the Oakland Telegraph scene. This is what I consider a real cocktail bar. Friendly bartenders and well-thought out libations crafted with fresh ingredients. Spice Mail is my personal favorite - great if you like your cocktails with a little spice. A great addition to the existing line-up of surrounding bars/beer gardens in the area. I had never been here until I went to a friend's surprise birthday party on a Saturday afternoon. The facade of the building is deceiving because the interior bar was really nice and we'll laid out with tv's. The most surprising feature was the huge rear beer garden. I didn't find this bar any special compared to a lot of bars in Oakland. Maybe because it was my first time on a First Friday and it was one word: crowded. Yes, it has a back patio a third of the size of Lost and Found a couple blocks down. Drinks were standard. And to add on, I could barely hear the music. Bar was super packed not sure how the folks in line had the patience to wait. Now I didn't try any of their cocktail drinks. Maybe that's what I was missing out. By chance last First Friday I walked into this place and liked it so much I decided to celebrate my birthday at Double Standard. From the front, it seems like it would be very small, but once you are inside you see it expands into a great patio space with trees and strung lights. It's very cute, with limited indoor seating, which actually adds to the old-timey vibe they have going. The drinks are delicious and very strong. If you like your whiskey gingers to be mostly whiskey (like I do) then this is the place for you. They do get pretty busy which is great to see, but they could benefit from an additional bartender. They did open less than two months ago, so they might be adding more staff when they can. All in all, this place is great. It's cute, affordable, delicious, and I have yet to wait in line to use the bathroom - which as a woman, when out drinking, this is very important. read more

This is an awesome place! Great personalities and service to be had. My most favorite moment of the night has been meeting a regular named Barbara! She is a gem. My favorite thing about The Double Standard is that it's not too fussy of a place. The inside is dimly lit, great for date nights, and they have an outdoor patio as well. The table tops across from the bar have black tablecloths and tea lights but still plenty of space for your beer(s). Prices are decent, nothing over-inflated, and the selection is nice with some local brews highlighted. This venue allows dogs on the patio, huge plus for me, but you do walk through the bar to the patio. The women's bathroom features 2 stalls (I know I would like this mentioned in reviews cause who likes to wait in lines?!) and they are clean. The door man will check you ID before entering and enjoying a cold Trumer Pils so be sure to have that ready. Totally worth the stop while downtown any time of the day! read more

Great spot for casual vibes both inside and outside. The bar is inside, but there is great outdoor seating here as well. The drinks are actually reasonably priced for a cocktail bar, and they are serving the Anderson Valley Gose here, which I LOVE. And it's only $5 for a can! They also have water that you can get yourself, so no need to deal with the busy bar to get hydrated. My only complaint is that the tap cocktails are a bit too sweet for my liking. I was extremely excited when I heard this place was open after 9pm and serving food (a rare find during Covid times). We waited for at least 15 min to get seated, understandably so...it seemed like the gentleman who was in charge of seating people was a bit stressed so we were completely understanding of the circumstances. We finally got seated. As we waited (for what seemed longer than usual) we did not raise a fit because I mean it's covid, times are tough... however out of nowhere the gentleman who seated us came up to us saying we needed to leave, that we did not order anything and that this isn't a park we can just sit at. We were honestly in shock. We were never given menus or told that we somehow needed to order somewhere...we actually still don't know what we did wrong or where or how we were supposed to even order... sadly I can't say we had a pleasurable experience. The bouncer who checked our Id and the people we chatted with while waiting to get seated were the only positives out of the whole experience. As health care workers, just trying to de-stress another day during a pandemic this place left us in distress and hopeful that there are other places in this city more welcoming despite hard times. read more

Definitely one of the better bars downtown. Pretty affordable drinks, nice crowd and the back patio is incredible. Great Oakland tryna be Austin vibes. There's a big tree at the center of it with hanging lights draping from it. Plenty of standing room and some sitting areas. The only knock is the back patio closes at 12:30. Womp. Although the idea of this bar is great (ambience, patio in the back, variety of drinks, etc.), I had a terrible experience. I went here a few Saturdays ago with friends and pretty sure I got sick from a rum they made my drinks with. I drank not much alcohol & always have the same drink wherever I go (rum & coke) because it's shown to be a safe option for me the last few years. I didn't eat anything out of the ordinary that day so I believe it was due to the alcohol there. I can also agree with other reviews that the bartenders that particular evening seemed to not be so friendly, and it wasn't busy that night so they weren't in a rush to make drinks, so that was kind of a red flag to me as well. read more

Came here Sunday afternoon and it was completely dead and I was skeptical but then I had a craft cocktail on tap, yes, on tap, and I was like whoa. What is this place?! Slowly people started to come in and I know it's new but I think it'll do well and really pick up. It's a very spacious place and has a great back patio and ambiance. The place is spacious, and offers various bar style type seating, throughout the place. I don't seem to recall a table whateverso, but its okay. The place is nice as they have various beers on tap. Yet, at the time no "Porters" just a stout, but that still seemed to wet my whistle. Although not on the menu, I asked for a Sazerec a usual staple of mine, and was surprised at the way he made it, But none the less the Bourbon rye was good. They have deals like a shot of whiskey they themselves make, which is to rival the likes of "Fireball whiskey" but without the "Antifreeze" and a beer for $11. I like the place, but if I am in Oakland, it wouldn't be my first place to go, but definitely not my last time coming here. I have to Check it on a night, where its alive and popping. :) read more

Don't let the divey appearance of the outside scare you off. It's much nicer inside. I hit this place on Fridays when the S*M Vegan Pop Ups happen. I love that there is such good food available at a bar on a Friday night! (It's only on Fridays though, so don't go some other night) The drinks are ok. Moderate prices, moderate selection. Measured pours, so the drinks aren't strong, but they're not watered down either. Bartenders can be a bit slow when it's busy. Ambience is nice. Behind the tagged up door, graffiti wall, upstairs with the windows open, shade pulled down, there is a bar with soft lighting, good music, all-star bartenders, god-damn redwood trees in the middle of a city block, and great drinks at a great price. My go-to cocktail bar, the owner-operator Ali has a great résumé for drinks, the staff he handpicked are some of the best pours in Oakland and the place really comes together. Definitely my best bar experience in Oakland so far! Came here with a bunch of friends on a Friday night and this bar was the perfect fit for a fun and thirsty girls night out. The beer pitcher(S) we had were absolutely on point (thanks to the advice of the nice waiter). Not even to mention how delicious the food was. The second visit was much better than the first. First time around I came in with my buddy in the early evening and we were in a good mood after a few drinks down the block. When we came in the bartender (some bearded dude - that's all I can remember) gave us the stink eye while he was talking to his friends at the bar. My friend and I did a double take - we were talking excitingly but not drunk or making a scene so it was weird for him to overtly vibe us like that. Of course, he took his sweet time coming over to us so after we sat in the cool wooded patio, I let my buddy get subsequent drinks cause I wasn't going to put up with that bartender. This last visit was a lot more enjoyable. I ordered the Double Standard old fashioned and a Faction IPA after. The old fashioned was ok - I like it better when they serve it with one large ice cube - and the beer was great. The bartender was cool and attentive and it seemed like a lot of other servers from other bars had stopped by that afternoon to hang for a bit. The interior is well thought-out and of course the back patio is the super cool with the huge red woods and benches in the back. Between the first and last visit it averages out to 3 stars but I do like the spot and I will return for sure. read more

This is a gem on Telegraph. Walked by this place, and literally just had to stop by. The bar is stocked with premium liquor (love seeing local stuff, too, like St. George Spirits!) Our bartender, who served us immediately and worked efficiently behind the bar, definitely knew his stuff, and made us amazing cocktails. Then head out to the patio. What a difference! You wouldn't expect giant trees, an awesome deck, gorgeous string lights, with many picnic tables to greet you. So open and lovely. We came early, so there wasn't much of a crowd, but we definitely enjoyed our cocktails while relaxing on the deck. We will definitely be back here! read more
