My friend took us here for an escape from the crowd during first friday. At first i was like , where the f is she taking us? The outside is a bit dingy looking so i wasnt prepared for the beautiful space in the back. Drink prices are affordable, they have beer + shot deals for only $8. My favorite part of this bar was the outside area, it was so brightly lit because of the sun flowing through. Plenty of seats and long communal tables to sit on. I was so happy to find this place and had a great happy hour with a girlfriend of mine! Bartender was super friendly and solo the entire time we were there- he did so well balancing everything and still conversing! They card at the door- I like a 21+ place! Dogs allowed inside and out! Don't let the outside fool you! It may look like an abandoned building with a piece of wood as their banner and chalk used to write their store name, once you walk inside, it's dim lighting, packed with people but still enough room to walk. They have a good selection of beer if that's all you're looking for. A couple of tables/chairs inside for hanging out. For quick grabs, they even have a section at the bar to order, kind of like the express lane at a Safeway or whatever, to order a beer or wine. Pretty neat. There's a huge outdoor seating area with benches, and lights hanging around. GIANT tree as soon as you walk out. Probably known for "the bar with the giant tree in the outdoor seating area". Came here after First Fridays to meet up with some friends. This is a really cool bar -- check out the back patio with the giant redwood tree. It's a pretty awesome place to chill and chat with friends. They had some drink specials like a $5 beer and a shot (I think there were limited options here, but for $5, you can't really go wrong.) The only thing about this place that could be improved was the $5 cover on a Friday night. I guess I understand why they charge it, but it was kind of a bummer, so I'm knocking off a star for that. read more

I have to admit... the cocktails here are pretty amaze balls! Very sweet, pleasing to the eye and all of that jazz for sure. However, there just isn't enough of it. I always feel like I'm getting a kiddie sized portion of my drink for an adult price. Although I thoroughly enjoy the aesthetics of a sexy looking cocktail, I'm more interested in the actually quality and what I'm actually getting for my dollar. If you come after happy hour, be prepared to shell out some serious cash for your drink! The drinks here are very pricey and can add up quickly if you want to actually get buzzed. They don't make them really strong here in my experience. But if you're coming during happy hour time, so ahead and spend that cash giiiiiiiirl (or booooooy!). They don't have the greatest happy hour deals, but it's much better than paying full price. The bartenders here aren't super friendly but they aren't terrible either. It's a get to the bar, get your drink, and move out of the way situation. Sometimes, that's just how it is. The inside décor and outside setup is actually one of my faves! It's one of the reasons why I continue to come here. The inside is so spacious with dim lighting that exposes the sexiness of the glowing bar. The music is very "adventurous"... you will never get bored of what they are spinning here (even if it's not your cup of tea). There is a massive outside deck situated with benches and a few large trees. They have bulb lights strung around the deck area and really neat artwork displayed on the outside walls. If you have a big group, this is the perfect place to stretch out and grab a table out in the back. My only quarrel with this outside deck is that they allow smoking. This is definitely an advantage for smokers, but not for my face and lungs while I'm in attendance. I would love to go out on the deck to get some "fresh air" but I end up not being able to breathe when I'm out there. I guess I can't win them all, right? In closing, the Double Standard is a great bar for happy hour or when you are '"hopping" down Telegraph on a lively night. Amazing ambiance. Stopped in Oakland on the way from SF and was surprised by this cool spot. Will go again.

There will be little news in this review but we love The Double Standard. It's our local bar so it's great that it's a proper one. Best part is what we've never managed to have elsewhere at a bar - dog friendly outdoor patio. Being able to go to a bar with our dog and not have blaring music (*cough* Drake's) in your ears or tons of people crowding around you is awesome and a game changer for us. Other things - the staff is super friendly and I've never had a bad drink even though I switch it up quite a bit. If you're in the area looking for a bar that's not a dive, not super fancy, but also allows dogs then this is the to place for you. I tried the Double Standard (gin, rye, raspberry gomme, lime), and my partner tried the International Mason (mezcal, Cynar, coffee bitters, sweet vermouth). Both came in cute Nick & Nora glasses, and were equally delicious, with a good balance between sweet and bitter. I'd recommend making a pit stop here if you're in Oakland and like well-made cocktails that don't break the bank. Not one of my favorite bars in the uptown area but they have a nice patio outdoor section in the back with 2 huge Redwood trees. The bartenders are nice but I didn't like how they charged tax for drinks when I used a debit/cc. Maybe it was cause they think ppl aren't going to tip?! But that was a first in all of the beers I've been to. The outdoor area is nice but during the Finals, it gets pretty crowded and everybody is smoking so it's hard to breathe out there. The music was cool, a lot of reggae before the game and hip hop after the game. Drinks ranged from $7-8 for jack/coke, jameson, gin/tonic. I'd come back to chill but not to watch a game. read more

Only reason I can't give 5 stars is because I've only tried 2 of their drinks on their menu. Oh no I'll just have to go and try them all....that will be sooooo difficult. This place is really dope. Just a great vibe as soon as you walk in. The guy checking IDs at the door and my boyfriend got into a beard discussion which led me to just tie my hair in front of my face and he declared me the winner so that of course won me over. Having someone be that friendly as soon as you enter a business really is a make it or break it, especially on a Saturday evening. This Saturday we came there was a DJ there and someone celebrating their 60th birthday so that place was bumpin! No hops were broken on the dance floor that night! We schmoozed on in and got 2 Paloma's and I wish I could remember what the other drink was but I may have been a few drinks into this day already. The outside area is amazing and I absolutely loved the artwork. It's like cute hiking adventure meets Alice in wonderland so basically it's like someone on a hiking TRIP (get it nudge nudge). A nice pub with a large outside areas under redwood trees. Great drinks too and friendly staff. The only issue is the difficulty of parking in this neighborhood. Parking has been made worse by the work done on Telegraph Avenue by the city, which resulted in the loss of several parking spots. Based on previous reviews, we were hoping The Double Standard would be fairly chill on a Saturday night, but it was pretty full. The indoor area was sweltering hot even though it wasn't a particular warm day, so everyone was packed onto the patio, which reeked of smoke of all kinds. Nowhere to sit. I normally appreciate bars that allow dogs, but this wasn't the right place or time - people were pretty drunk and dogs were running free/barking/etc. While I love the vibe on the patio with the big redwoods and communal seating, I don't think we'll be back on a weekend night. Ambiance aside, the cocktails here are solid. The "Mr. Pink" (see pictured) was a favorite - super adorable with a little candied ginger + dehydrated citrus garnish. The other cocktails were also pretty good - a short menu of drinks that mostly leaned on the stronger/drier side. Considering the location, ambiance, and offerings, however, I'd say the prices are a bit high. We walked down the street to Blind Tiger afterwards, where for the same price (if not a bit less), we had much more inventive/creative cocktails, a place to sit, parking, and table service... read more

I absolutely loved this place. I loved it so much, I am trying to contact them to host an event there! I went to Double Standard on the day of a warriors playoff game, and it was so much fun. They have an inside bar and a backyard outside area with a bunch of picnic tables. It was pretty cool too that they had a grill outside serving hot dogs and hamburgers throughout the night. If there is some sort of popular event going on that day, it is pretty crucial you show up early; unless you don't mind standing and being in a crowd. I usually like Double Standard but had the worst experience with a fellow patron yesterday for First Friday. My friends and I were enjoying a drink on the back patio and decided to leave. I placed my empty glass on a communal raised table and we walked away. As we left we were confronted by an older white man who called us b words and handed me back the glass in an intimidating manner. I was appalled and we all were left speechless at his audacity. As we waited in line for my friend to use the bathroom the man's companion, an older Asian woman approached us and confronted us. Obviously, we were not going to stoop down to this woman's level and engage her but were shocked these two individuals conducted themselves in such a confrontational manner. As we left, I told the bouncer about the situation and showed him the picture of the man. He listened and said he was going to go back and talk to the man. Unfortunately the volume of people coming in through the doors prevented him from leaving and by this time we were just angry at our treatment. First Friday is a great event but draws crowds, I recommend that Double Standard increase security on these days. Also this experience demonstrates to us it's not the stereotypical young patrons that are labeled as disrespectful, it can be a clean cut white man too. Sadly, we are removing Double Standard from our rotation of bars after this experience. read more

I came here for a friend's surprise engagement party and since then it's become one of my fave places in Oakland. Location: It's in downtown near all the bars/beer gardens so parking is tough to find. The place itself is so unassuming. The outside of the building has paint peeling so you don't think that it'll be that upscale but when you walk inside it looks so modern and as you walk to the back there is a huge tree in the middle covered with tea lights lining the outdoor area. Ambiance: The vibe here is great. The bartenders are so attentive and regardless of how busy it is, you don't have to wait an insane amount of time to get drinks as there is a bar inside and outside. The tea lights also added to the ambiance and as a sucker for them I couldn't help but fall in love. They have a few barrels they use as tables and a few communal benches that you can share with people. It does get busy so you'll probs just end up finding a spot to fit everyone until a table opens up. Drinks: The drinks here are average for the area and are tasty. I find myself going for the Pimms cup since I've been obsessed after studying abroad in Europe. Will return when the next occasion arises or when i'm craving that Pimms. read more

In a neighborhood riddled by graffiti (not entirely a bad thing), this bar kind of sets up like a gem in the rough. From the curb side it doesn't look like much. But upon entering it is a small bar that is surprisingly not divey (Stork Club just down the way). It is clean, country style wood, cool hangings on the walls, mellow urban tunes at a perfect comfortable noise level. Very conducive to a mellow date night. The drinks are very "crafty" and I got the sense that the bartender liked to mix around, and would frown upon a 2 ingredient drink, such as a bourbon and soda. Ornate bottles of bitters line and decorate the bar top. Yes, it is "that" kind of a bar. Tried an Old Fashion with Rye and it is the slow sippin' style versus the juicy, gulpable style. Appropriate for the chillier months. It was proper. Didn't get a chance to check out the patio (winter visit) but heard good things about it. Double Standard nice to have found ya. If you are over 35 and want to feel really old (and BROKE) - visit the Double Standard! It's really pretty and has a great patio - the ambient lighting is very nice. They have great beer selections - but everything is quite expensive. The music in the bar was pretty loud - but I guess if most people are looking at their cell phones, it doesn't matter if you can't have a conversation anyway! Stopped in a couple of weeks ago with an after-work crowd celebrating a colleagues birthday, when I stepped out of my Uber ride and looked at the facade I was seriously wondering who amongst our group had chosen this apparent hell hole of a dive bar. Now, being one who is a fan of dive bars I was not the least bit deterred, but somewhat taken aback a bit that my more genteel friends would be willing to frequent this establishment. Of course when you walk through the door you immediately "get" the name, as it is a very clean, hip and welcoming bar which was obviously only recently renovated. Continuing through to the door leading to the back patio in search of my friends, I was again pleasantly surprised to find a great outdoor space with three huge redwood trees providing shade and several tables available. Back to the bar to buy a few drinks for the crowd, and also happy to see a great selection of premium and boutique labels, a nice menu of creative craft cocktails, and a couple of skilled bartenders who were adept, efficient, and friendly. Hope to be back soon and try a couple of more things on the menu! Not sure if they are going to add any food items but that or some type of pop-up arrangement would definitely have me at the five star level here! read more

I was standing on Telegraph yelping bars to figure out where I was going next. As I looked up from my phone I saw that one was right in front of me. Yelp had The Double Standard listed as a cocktail bar/lounge. I scoffed as I took in the very rough exterior. "THIS place? Cocktail bar is a bit of a stretch... ", I thought. But I, forever a lover of dive bars, decided to give it a try anyway. As soon as I stepped inside I realized I was SO wrong about this place. The inside was classy, beautiful and featured an interesting list of specialty cocktails. The best part was the back area, though. There were lights strung up and three beautiful, giant redwoods were the centerpieces. Despite there being at least a dozen people outside, it was quiet and peaceful. Do not let the front deter you from coming here. The Double Standard is an awesome place for a drink! read more

Super fun place, had this bookmarked for a while and finally got a chance to stop by for my birthday as a pitstop. Even on the weekend, they run happy hour specials- instant win win in my book! Fine selection and variety of liqours and beers on tap. Special tap cocktails are up on their board. The Henny Apple Soda caught my eye and in time for happy hour to end. It was deliciuos and I threw back two in a time span of 10 minutes. It had hennessy, applejack, lemon, apple cider, and bitters (10). Or you can get this by the pitcher for $45 which isn't a bad deal at all! They like doing pitchers here, lot's of variety for that. Happy hour is M-F from 4-7pm and Sat-Sun from 2-5pm. It's $1 off all tap beers, $1 off all wines, and $2 off all tap cocktails (expect first Fridays). It's clean inside and there's restrooms.
