Rowan Community - Stephen G, Zessin, LLC Rowan sucks!

We have 2 children at the facility that are suffering from a terrible neurological disease. They will never recover, and Rowan Community is their home. The staff treat them as such and take care of them like they are their own. You can't put a price tag or a star rating on that. If something were to happen to my wife or myself, we know that they would be taking care of. With that said, it is an older building and has a lot of the issues that come with an older building. They unfortunately are dealing with staff shortages much like every other business these days, but they are doing the best they can. Everyone pitches in to help. It is all hands-on deck when it comes to meal service, and they do the best they can. We are very involved with the care of our kids and you will find my wife there at least 3 times a week. Unfortunately, several of the residents have been forgotten by their family members and they expect the staff to just "handle" their needs. If you are looking for a state-of-the-art facility, Rowan probably isn't that. If you are looking for people who care, Rowan is the place.

Honestly, this is one of those situations where if I could take stars away from them or give…read morenegative stars, I would! My father was brought to Rowan after a back surgery for rehab, because it was affiliated with the VA. They seemed to be highly rated but this is the biggest nightmare of a care facility I've ever experienced in my life. This is the hell you send your loved ones to when they are dying! Before I even got there, my dad was texting us non-stop to come save him. He did not get breakfast because his dinner the night before was practically inedible. He begged us to bring him outside food. Upon walking in you are immediately hit with a smell of a mixture of morgue and mold-riddled cafe. Then you see the paint, decor, and bedding is all from the 1970s and 1980s. The beds spring boards and the mattresses are foam, not memory foam, regular camping mat foam. The beds at the hospital were more comfortable. The staff seemed mostly nice, but the Director of Nursing seemed to find us audacious for saying that the beds were not adequate. Dad was complaining of pain three times more in these beds than he did at the hospital before his surgery. I asked her how old the beds were, and she answered with "They are perfectly functional! What's wrong with them?!" That's not what I asked. The more I sat with my dad, the more triggered I got by the sounds and smells. It sounds like an insane asylum. Doors being slammed every 30 seconds, equipment knocking and slamming, staff yelling at each other across the halls, patients melting down, etc. There is no AC in the individual rooms. The PT center can only handle one patient at a time, and with as many patients as they had, I'm not sure how often they could have gotten around to my dad's care. As I walked to different places in the facility I was hit with what smells like feces and rotten menstrual pads. Then I had to get on the floor because my dad dropped his hearing aid battery and the floor was sticky. There were no chairs for visitors or patients to sit on. We sat on the unoccupied bed in the room and our backs started hurting as well.

I drove my car forward to escape their pursuit, but I was unable to get away. After over 1/2 hour of being trapped in my car while they hit it with their vehicles and caused it to be totaled, I lost the battle to escape being carjacked. One of the men took a glass cutting tool and use it to cut & crack the driver side window. Then he reached in and unlocked the car and they dragged me out of the car. I thought I was going to die. They loaded me onto a stretcher, cranked me up a ramp into the back of the antiquated ambulance. The gurney was not affixed to the sides of the ambulance and there was no one in the back with me. So I was shifting and bumping around in the rear of the vehicle. I was driven to Parkview Care. I was in total shock. I found myself @ an unfamiliar place. I have no recollection of having my cell phone, my purse or anyone explaining to me what was happening. The gang passed me off to a pleasant young woman, who brought me inside. I was in shock and covered with glass. I can't remember if she was an RN, or a nurses' aide. I know no one undressed me or put me in a gown, but I was covered in shards of glass from the shattered window. There were sharp little pieces of glass sticking into my face, in my hair, in my clothing, in my underwear, in my shoes, pricking me everywhere. I was very cold, battered and bruised. The personnel were quiet, detached & uninformative. I have a vague recollection of being attached to the standard temperature and blood pressure devices which read out on the monitor. Hours passed, at some point a Physician Assistant came in and we spoke. I know I was cold, tired and very afraid. I prayed. I seemed to have no authority. No one asked me to sign any consent forms. Various random medical diagnostic test were ordered. No medical treatment was provided. After midnight my husband was contacted and he came and picked me up and took me to a local hotel. We eventually received an exorbitant ambulance, and hospital bill.

I asked my surgeon for a referral and he sent me the Dr Hsu. He reviewed my MRI and said I needed Ablation in my lumbar spine at 3 levels. I agreed to the procedure. His technique is flawless it hardly hurt. The procedure took less than an hour I was impressed. The pain changed from extreme pain to about half the intensity for about a month. Then slowly the pain went away and my range of motion came back as well and the pain level is just a minor annoyance. I can do PT to restore additional range of motion and solve my muscle atrophy from not being able to bend efficiently for years. Dr Hsu also stated that the ESI's would not work and I needed the Lumbar RFA, which worked at unbelievable levels. The staff are also great, they care and keep you updated. Overall I am extremely pleased.

After asking for an updated for the second time, they said it'd be at least another 30 minutes. Even though the office was "closing" already. Ended up just leaving. I unfortunately didn't have time to wait 1.5 hours at 5 pm at night. Multiple other people sitting in the waiting room for 30-45 minutes +. One lady walked out from the back to ask if a doctor was ever going to come into the exam room to see her because she had been sitting there for so long. Clearly no time management or respect for patients time. Quite the bummer after waiting a month for the appointment, leaving work early, and sitting in the waiting room for so long.
