Back again for a relaxing Saturday evening glass of wine and some oysters. I had already prepared an early dinner at home, so we really weren't there to eat. But that changed quickly when Chef Luke Zahn emerged from the kitchen with some complimentary off-the-menu small plates to try. The first is difficult to describe. It was sweet bread with house cured ham covered in a raisin sauce. Delicious! He stopped by later with fried buttermilk chicken legs with a smoked pepper applesauce. it was fantastic. A glass of wine turned into a bottle and we never made it anywhere else that night. a wonderful evening with a very personal touch. read more

Went here after we heard it was " award winning " we started with the scallop pancakes which were not bad and then had the salad which was ok . A lot of local lettuce is used so be prepared for some exotic tastes , which was not great . The main course was a pork chop on the bone with potatoes . The potatoes were chopped up like hash browns which had very little flavor . The pork chop had no salt and very little flavor . I've been coming to Viroqua for a short time now. But I seem to end up here everytime I'm close enough. And coming from Indiana means I've been here 4 times. I love this place. It has a familiarity about it that is reminiscent of a hippie coffee shop I once frequented a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. It's rustic to the eye. Smells like the best pizza you've ever had. And then there's the food. Methodically prepared. Uber fresh ingredients. Simple. And just enough heart and soul to make you think about that ..... you had a couple weeks back. There's a constant rotation of local art for sale on the walls and they have obscure microbrews from the area that are hard to pass up. This is by far my favoritest place in the driftless region of southwestern Wisconsin. Mostly because they offer gluten-free bread! with a surcharge, of course, but that's par for the course. Been here three times for lunch while traveling through on the motorcycle. Every time the food was delicious, staff helpful, and vibe relaxing and welcoming. They are also open straight through to dinner - but have a very limited menu from 4-5pm (I think). Nice when you're out riding and the hungries hit and it's 3pm...! Always see other riders here, it's a nice spot to relax after a morning of alphabet soup. :) read more

We have loved this place for years. It seems sometimes we only stay in Viroqua to eat here. I have often called it my favorite restaurant. We love the farm to table quality, the staff, the menu choice, the support of locals, the organics. It pains me to write something negative here. We are still in the pandemic, so we got food to go. I'm an old fart and don't go willingly into maskless situations. Although the staff was all masked, the restaurant was packed to capacity with no customers masked. It did not feel safe to go inside and pick up my order. Maskless humans were packed at the bar. I feel sorry for the people working there. The only safe way to open up in person is to limit capacity, since people can't eat with masks. Like I said, packed to the gills. They advertise extensive safeguards, but did not deliver. That being said, the food we ordered was supreme, as usual. Additionally, their to-go menu is extremely truncated. Their fish fry special on Friday was only for a group of 4 to-go. No flexibility. This restaurant is a must if you find yourself wanting a meal in this part of Wisconsin (we actually drove here from Minnesota to have lunch). The squash bisque was incredible-- smooth, complex, amazing. I had a catfish po' boy and it was the best catfish dish I've ever had. The service was friendly and helpful. I cannot say enough good things about this place. We were staying at a nearby cabin to celebrate our anniversary and made reservations here. The ambiance is cozy, casual and the food is insanely fresh and delicious. I'm currently on a dairy-free diet (so sad) and the kitchen and staff went completely out of their way to create something magical for me. They also brought us complimentary champagne! Stopped here on our way to Chippewa Falls and had one of the best meals I've ever had. Our visit was several years ago so I can't remember exactly what I had but it was something with gnocchi. Really a great place. After dinner on a Wednesday night hung around listening to the bluegrass band. The atmosphere was amazing for a small town cafe. The menu, while not huge has vegetarian selections and a bunch of apps. They have a neat take on bruchetta. The beer selection was a bunch nice of micro brews. I live in Madison but Viroqua is my hometown. Restaurants in Viroqua, during my lifetime, have been traditional supper clubs or cafe/family style. The Driftless is nothing like anything before it in Viroqua. This is more like the food you would expect to get in a big city. The food is creative, flavorful, and priced afforably. In the past we have skipped dessert. Last night, I decided to take half of my entire home and we split a piece of chocolate peanut butter cake. Now we have another reason to go. It might not be the kind of cake that a lot of people would like. It seems that everyone has dense overly sweet cake. This was light and moist. The frosting was a light creamy peanut butter. It was heavenly. My wife called it old fashioned cake. I'm not much for writing flowery descriptions of meals so the best I can say is this food on a very high level. It is worth a trip to Viroqua just to eat at The Driftless. read more
