Another one of the shining stars for this area...(100+miles) The Driftless Cafe has excellent food, atmosphere, service, live music... And surprisingly the best pizza for miles... (the pizza outside of Tri state -NY area is mostly horrid across the nation with the odd island oasis here and there... Don't even try to deny this- ) For Pizza.. this place would be a trickling spring in a barren land... most people in this area.. and most places I have been in around the nation think frozen factory made pizza cut into tiny pieces is pizza... you poor things... But, they indeed try at this place- They even leave room for the crust to have its Roll... The Crust is the foundation... it is the most important part to get right... and well, it is also the most difficult. They do try to do this here, it is just like people don't really know what they have to do, but they have seen it so they try and imitate it -- So here is a tip for them in case they are reading this - Guys you really could use a hotter oven(650-750F should be a good start), Get a proper pizza dough starter (FROM A NYC Bakery- they sell it .. and its cheap) Then let the dough age in the refrig over night, then let it rise to room temp and puff up- (((ALWAYS HAND TOSS NEVER USE A DUMB MACHINE-- I don't think you do that anyway .. just saying)) then you will find it much easier to work with it would rise better, have flavor...and my god you would have the first fold able pizza for at least 300 miles... probably more -- And that spring of good pizza you have now...would be a torrential river of pizza bliss... as the toppings are perfect and the sauce is good- (a bit less red wine tho...and more basil capeche?) - Now for the other stuff on menu... Fantastic... I am never afraid to order a special either- They are not afraid of flavor.. and someone there really loves to cook food- and every once in a great while... they have Paella!!! They also give you solid portions. Oh and another thing... Hands down the best most flavorful salads - It is almost intimidating with the variety that goes into these salads... yet one bite after another will have you racing to try the next little bit... simply superb. Do not miss an opportunity to visit this hidden little gem... definitely worth it and then some. I just noticed the price range... someone must of went with a party of at least 4 or 2 and they had few bottles of wine... no way this place is 60 dollars per person... 60 dollars spent here is for 4 people w/ appetizers/ non alcoholic bevs, and 4 entrees - PLUS TIP... read more

We headed over to the Driftless on Saturday night before nine. People still sitting and eating and OPEN sign in the window. Four out of the last five times we tried going there they were closed. We thought, "Score!!" Well, as soon as we park the car, someone runs to the window and puts up the CLOSED sign. We've had it. Not going there again. Apparently they don't need our pathetic business. My husband & I went here on our honeymoon & absolutely loved this place! We went on a Wednesday night & enjoyed the great bluegrass music. This was my second time visiting the Driftless and as with my first time the quality of ingredients was excellent. The preparation however and service of the restaurant was absolutely not. We arrived for dinner on Saturday night at 5:30 with a party of four and ordered a cheese plate appetizer, salads and entrees including two orders of tenderloin, a pizza, and the eggplant entree. The appetizer was very good which included four local cheeses. The time it took to receive the salads following the appetizer was way too long however. I understand the concept of creating a dining experience but the time it took considering our arrival time and the number or other diners was inappropriate. Even worse however was the wait time between salads and entrees. I have to believe that there was either an issue wit the kitchen or our server forgot to enter our order as there was an unacceptable time between the two courses. Once again this time period was far beyond creating a dining experience. Long after the our dinner conversation had switched to discussing the time it was taking our server to arrive, and after a number of awkward eye contact with our server our entrees finally came. The steaks my party ordered were to be medium and well done. By nobody's standard were these steaks medium and well done. The medium was merely seared on the outside and the well done was at best, maybe medium thus reaffirming my opinion that our table's order had to have been forgotten about. Because it had taken such and inordinate time to receive our meal, we were not going to send the meal back. It was pointed out to our server that the steaks were not prepared properly, to which she nodded and agreed. I get that restaurants for various reasons will experience delays and back ups causing the meal to not be served timely as would be hoped. In such situations however, this should at least simply be acknowledged and this was never done. The dining experience at the Driftless Cafe was extremely disappointing and will likely not be going back. I believe that Viroqua needs a restaurant which prepares local ingredients in a refined manner as the Driftless is attempting but the service aspect was substandard. read more

We were disappointed last Saturday evening. The restaurant was very warm (no air conditioning?). Waitress was attentive, but even our water was warm (no ice?). Menu is small, which is fine, but they were out of 1 of only 5 entrees at 8pm. The food was ok, certainly not outstanding. read more

Would not recommend for lunch. Out of lemons and tepid water served in Mason jars. Food was severely under seasoned. Caesar salad was bitter greens and not Romaine. Server never came back to check on our meal or ask if we needed anything like maybe salt and pepper that was not on the table. Didn't taste like Caesar dressing that should have Parmesan and anchovies incorporated. The seafood chowder looked good but was again not seasoned and tasted like it was maybe made with skim milk. read more

There was a man there called shitpants. He had, the shittiest pants. They were green. They were so awesome. They were the best pants. The waitresses were very, very pretty. This is great place to go after a long day wading the nearby trout streams when you are tired, hungry and thirsty. Nice beer selection. Small, but great menu. Terrific pizza in my opinion. Food was mostly great. i very much enjoyed the cheese plate, medditeranean platter, and gluten free pizza. As for the ribeye steak, the meat came out lukewarm while the potatoes were burnt, some to the point that it was inedible. the subpar temperature of the steak was probably due to the inattentive service. It was a busy Saturday night though, but that didn't help my experience. I would have rated this place a 3, but I am impressed by the fact that all food from the kitchen was organic, so props to that. read more

Awesome food, Mac and cheese was Amazing and steak sandwich was a must. Bakery looked like they had some great treats.

We came in on for an early lunch on a Saturday. Family of four and all our lunches were very good. Burger, steak sandwich, catfish sandwich and grilled cheese. Service was prompt and attentive. Prices are a touch on the high side, but for the quality, it's what you'd expect. Not five stars? I'm stingy when it comes to "as good as it gets." I'd give them 9 out of 10, though, and would certainly go back - I'd love to try their pizza. read more

Great atmosphere (especially new tavern next door!), fancy food for the area, wonderful ethics, friendly staff. Major downside (this is just a personal issue that we have in this region) is that it is not very vegetarian-friendly. Most meals that are considered "vegetarian" are polenta, risotto, or pasta, which get kind of old and it seems unfair to pay so much for them when they obviously should cost a lot less than the meat dishes. First time patron and was not disappointed with the food. Exceptional flavor and presentation for the small town location. Started with smoked trout pate - GREAT. Salad of fresh greens, local produce & lemon/black pepper vinaigrette - GREAT. North Atlantic Scallops, blackberry reduction, ginger, radish, jalapeno - OH YES! Our server was knowledgeable and presented the menu well. Unfortunately the tables were a bit close for comfort and our server insisted on sliding between our table and the one next to us. After the third occasion of our server's butt brushing across my table-mate's shoulder (with no acknowledgement or "excuse me") we took it upon ourselves to move our table and create adequate space for the server to maneuver. Noise level in the bar dining area was over the top, I actually thought there was live music somewhere in the building (there wasn't, just a great sound system). The adjacent dining room was less thunderous, but still loud. Great atmosphere for a fun night with friends, but definitely does not make for a romantic dinner atmosphere. Most annoying part of the evening were the 2-3 flies that kept buzzing the table. I get it, they appear sometimes and it can't be helped, but when you're shooing them away from your food and the person at the table next to you is swatting at them with a menu - it's an issue. Would absolutely visit again based solely on the food, but only with the right group of friends seated in the dining room away from the loud bar area. read more

Stopped for lunch. When I saw the desserts, I knew I had to save room, so ordered the chicken veggie artichoke soup. It was heaven in a bowl, served with buttery slices of delicious bread. Seven of us ate there last night and really enjoyed the experience. Not only was the food excellent in taste, but the combinations put together were very creative. The chef focuses on buying local and highlights the local producers for virtually every item on the menu. This wonderful restaurant is nestled in the heart of the Wisconsin driftless region and the home of organic farms that have been around long before the organic food boom in recent years. The food is fresh, local and expertly prepared without pretention. For an appetizer we dined on pate that was the consistency of butter with a strawberry chutney like topping - delicious! Dinner was delicately fried turbot that literally melted in our mouths and a beef tenderloin that was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Dessert was carrot cake with candied cashews and an incredibly light cream cheese frosting. Simply the best carrot cake we have ever had. Friendly competent service and a comfortable space with a kind of hip meets rustic ambience. Just a wonderful dining experience that I highly recommend. read more

I attended a friends wedding this weekend at The Driftless Cafe. It was a beautiful intimate wedding of about 40 people, and TDC knocked it out of the park! The staff was amazing, the food was beyond good (plentiful portions, and exquisite taste). Truly a fantastic place. I am not sure what all the excitement was over this place. The food was good. We had hot paninis. They were your average paninis. The atmosphere was very Bohemian. The menu was very limited. I know there are not a ton of choices in Viroqua, but I would rather eat at the co-op than here. The food seemed better there. read more
