We walked into this place on a rainy Saturday afternoon and there were some very talented people picking a little bluegrass in a corner while we browsed away. The selection of stringed instruments is unlike any that I've seen in a small shop, and they have separate room (which are enchanting) for all sorts of music lessons (not just stringed instruments, but piano, horns, etc). The woman behind the counter was friendly and chatty and although she tried to upsell just about everything, she wasn't pushy about it and seemed to know what she was talking about. This is a great place to go on a lazy afternoon, whether you're a musician or not.

However I do recognize a great business when I see one. That being said, I was very pleased about what Steve was able to do for the guitar I brought in. It is a 1970's Yamaha classical guitar. The guitar is a hand-me-down from my mother's first husband who died at a young age. In other words, this is a very special piece to my family. I didn't want to drop it at just any shop; I wanted to get it the care it deserved. Unfortunately when I was younger I placed stickers on the guitar and let it sit in my closet for years where it fell into disrepair - although no major flaws. Finally, after moving the guitar from apartment to apartment I decided to learn how to play and of course, first, get it repaired. I dropped the guitar with Steve and a few weeks and $60 later, I had a sticker-free guitar with new strings, turning pegs and bridge. Again, I have no clue if the pricing was in line with the work but I would have gladly paid double that for the result and the care that was given to this special piece. *If you are having trouble finding the shop, it is a above a music studio to the left of Guitar Center. You have to ring the buzzer and then go up two flights of stairs. His shop is small, cluttered with all sorts of instruments/tools and AWESOME. A true Boston gem.

I have never had anyone able to discuss the importance of strings with particular brands and models as well as what certain type of pics can do for alternating sounds. After an in-house tech shaved nearly 1/ quarter of an inch too much off my brand new Martin after a horrible set up, Steve brought it back. It sounds better than the first day I bought it. He's taken my old Gibson and found issues which I was not aware and given it volume and tone I could never have imagined it was capable.

The full hour class is hands on rotating through guitar, vocals, keyboard, and different percussion instruments. Class sizes are limited to 6 kids. The facility is state-of-the-art. The owner and all employees were very friendly. My 5 year old came out of the class so energized and excited about music. Parking here is a bit crazy on Saturdays so give yourself plenty of time if coming on a weekend.

The parents also loved it and were very happy to see their kids enjoying the music, exploring instruments and dancing! Mister Vic was very nice and kind and he even offered to sing Happy Birthday at cake time! And last, but not least, Pat was super nice and helpful in helping book the party and providing great advice on how to have the space set up for the party. Both of my children had been taking music lessons at North Main for over two years. We stopped…read moretaking lessons there in favor of something more local since we moved and as the old song says, you don't know what you've got till it's gone. The educators at North Main are not just well versed in music, but they're professionals. When we had lessons scheduled for 6:30, they started at 6:30...not 6:40 or even 6:50! The instructors knew how to make music FUN for our daughters- they practiced during the week and they couldn't wait until the next lesson. When we first signed up it was explained to us that if we missed a lesson for whatever reason that makeup lessons weren't promised, yet on the occasions that we did miss a lesson due to vacationing, sickness, whatever, they always managed to fit us in at another time. We tried two other places (that shall remain nameless) and the instructors were not in North Main's league. The owners didn't seem to care about anything but money. The kids were nowhere near as motivated or interested. Lesson learned: when I asked the kids if they wanted to go back to North Main Music one of them literally started jumping with joy. We had to wait a couple of weeks for spots to open up and everyone was delighted when we finally got the call. They even asked one of their students to switch time so that my kids could take lessons at the same time and the student was nice enough to agree. It now takes us an extra 20 minutes or so each way to drive to North Main Music but it's well worth it. Thanks, guys!
