I want to preface this by saying that I have no musical ability whatsoever and have no clue about what makes someone a good vs. great guitar repair person. However I do recognize a great business when I see one. That being said, I was very pleased about what Steve was able to do for the guitar I brought in. It is a 1970's Yamaha classical guitar. The guitar is a hand-me-down from my mother's first husband who died at a young age. In other words, this is a very special piece to my family. I didn't want to drop it at just any shop; I wanted to get it the care it deserved. Unfortunately when I was younger I placed stickers on the guitar and let it sit in my closet for years where it fell into disrepair - although no major flaws. Finally, after moving the guitar from apartment to apartment I decided to learn how to play and of course, first, get it repaired. I dropped the guitar with Steve and a few weeks and $60 later, I had a sticker-free guitar with new strings, turning pegs and bridge. Again, I have no clue if the pricing was in line with the work but I would have gladly paid double that for the result and the care that was given to this special piece. *If you are having trouble finding the shop, it is a above a music studio to the left of Guitar Center. There's no better technician out there for guitars. Steve Bring guitars back to their original brilliance, if not better. He understands not just repair but performance. I have never had anyone able to discuss the importance of strings with particular brands and models as well as what certain type of pics can do for alternating sounds. After an in-house tech shaved nearly 1/ quarter of an inch too much off my brand new Martin after a horrible set up, Steve brought it back. It sounds better than the first day I bought it. He's taken my old Gibson and found issues which I was not aware and given it volume and tone I could never have imagined it was capable. read more

I've had my Martin D-28 since it was new, in 1968. It's traveled on a lot of buses, in the back of pickup trucks, crossed the border with Mexico multiple times, once on foot. I played it a lot for about 25 years. Then I stopped .. because ... life. When I got back to it again recently, it was a little daunting. There were cracks on the fingerboard, a crack next to the pick guard, and the neck had bowed under 50+ years of constant pressure from steel strings. It was hard to play, and it was hard to sound good playing it. Steve fixed _everything_. The hard knocks have left beauty marks, but it looks (and sounds great). But here's the kicker -- it plays better than it did when it was new. I didn't realize it was hard to play then. Wish I'd found Steve 25 years ago -- l would have been playing it for all of them. My first experience with Steve was when I took my 20 year old (heavily gigged) Taylor 410 whose bridge had lifted in for repair. I had been told by other guitar repair folks it needed $100's of work (which it may! But I just wanted the bridge put back down...). Over the years, Steve has done a range of work on my precious guitars, repairing a major crack in the side of an acoustic guitar, installing a custom volume knob on a semi-hollow electric guitar and rewiring the pickups as well as major fretwork and various minor repairs and adjustments. Every time, his work is of the highest quality. You can tell from the way he triages instruments that he is a master and knows exactly what to do (and what not to do) for your instrument, no matter the issue. Great experience with Steve who does quality work. We did a refret on my Martin guitar in that I pulled the old frets with a nipper and Steve replaced the old frets with stainless steel frets that I had bought. He leveled and filed them perfectly and I could not be happier with then results. I would recommend him to any player. read more

Need an affordable luthier who is easily approachable with a cool little shop that rivals Pinocchio's gepetto? Then Steve Morrill in Boston is the place to take your beloved stringed contraption. I took my stratocaster here a few months back for a basic setup( innotation, neck/pots cleaning, truss rod adjustment, etc.) He did it all in less than a week's time and at a very good price--just $65 for everything including new string setup. I was able to play a few notes on his fender amp when I picked it up and was immediately pleased. The aura and smell in the little shop is enough to guarantee Mr. Morrill will do your guitar right. He not only had the parts needed to fix it, but came up with a better, more stable solution that would avoid the same problem later, all in a few minutes while I waited, and for the walking-around money I had in my pocket. Steve is a miracle worker. I recently bought a 1976 Martin 00-18 that was in pretty bad shape (the price was right). It had not been played in 20 years, and had just been stored in a closet without proper humidification. The excessive action above the 5th fret made it pretty hard to play, the body had several disturbing cracks, and the pick guard was peeling off (with a crack underneath). A local guitar store recommended Steve. I'm not sure what magic incantations Steve used, but the guitar he returned sounded and played !!amazingly!!. It was as if he has a secret fountain of youth for guitars. The action is now so easy all the way up the neck, the cracks are still noticeable, but secured, and the sound is absolutely golden! I've been to Steve about a dozen times with my guitars, families and friends instruments and have sent several people there and have nothing but great things to say. He is reasonably priced and likely one of the most talented and experienced Luthier's in Boston. It's rare to see any establishment get 5 stars from so many people and Steve deserves it! Comparing Steve to the "technicians" at Guitar Center would be like comparing NASA to a group of drunken fratboys attempting to fly kites in a thunderstorm. I'm not the most experienced guitarist around, but I reckon Steve is a shining example of how the very best guitar technician does his work. I brought Steve my humble Asian-made Les Paul copy for a setup because the factory setup was just miles off being playable. Steve gave it the works and the transformation in the instrument was nothing short of amazing - nice, low action, no fret buzzes, perfect intonation, etc. That guitar is now punching well above its weight. His turnaround time was excellent, his price was very competitive, and I even learned a thing or two about how to get the maximum performance from the instrument while playing. I just dropped by hoping Steve could fix my banjo. It turned out to be a pretty simple thing and he happened to have the part in the shop, so he just did it right there and then, free of charge. I'm calling him Awesome Steve from now on. Awesome Steve is very friendly, there is no shortage of awesome tools and parts to drool over in his shop, and he's completely won me over for all future guitar/banjo repairs. I didn't see a sign on the door, so just know you're going to 169 Mass Ave, and go up a couple of flights until you see a door with a guitar on it. Had a seven string Ibanez with loose/worn frets worked on. Steve knew right away that the frets had to be tacked and it could use a fret re-crowning and gave me a quote for 125$. I thought it was a bit high but trusted him because of the good reviews. Came back a couple weeks later and he had re-crowned the frets, tacked all the loose frets, tightened down some more loose hardware and did a set-up for only 100$. I am overall quite satisfied with the quality of the work and the pricing. I will be going back to have my acoustic worked on. read more

Really happy with the service here. After seeing the earlier review about Steve fixing a banjo I emailed Steve to find out if he would be able to look at my banjo which was having a problem with the 5th tuning peg. Steve emailed me back right away and my husband brought the banjo in a few hours later. Steve looked at the banjo and was able to fix the problem in just a few minutes. And because it only took him a few minutes and no equipment he didn't even charge for the repair. While I don't hope to have any future musical instrument issues I'm definitely returning to Steve if something else goes wrong. read more

I walked up to his repair store today (which is literally right next to a Guitar Center, which I thankfully avoided) with my Schecter that had become a bit warped and wasn't playing right. This is where you want to go! Steve is kind, professional, and supremely competent. just brought my Taylor 614ce for a neck adjustment and electronics work. Steve told me that he was running with about a two to three week turnaround period but then did a couple of quick fixes -on the spot- that made my guitar really sing for my next gig. Visited Steve for the first time, to get my my beloved 1964 Fender Jazzmaster set up for a big show this weekend. He definitely went the extra mile, for example thoroughly checking all the wiring, replacing the old hardened foam under the pickups that had made it impossible to raise or lower them, and he even re-soldered the foot switch on my reverb pedal! Oh, and he found a set of my favorite strings to put on my guitar because I had forgotten to bring any. He was happy to accommodate my request to have the guitar all ready to go in just a couple of days, and then when I came to get it without bringing cash, he told me I could just mail him a check! Went to Steve to get some repairs done on my acoustic guitar. It was a minor thing and he fixed it within 10 minutes. Did not charge me anything as he said it was a very minor fix even though I insisted. This guy is simply awesome. He explained stuff very well and gave great advice on guitar humidifiers (the weather had caused my guitar to loose humidity and it began to jar). I would definitely recommend him.
