I purchased a Sonor SQ2 Kit a couple years ago. They shipped the bass drum in a thin, cheap cardboard box with NO padding. It was not in the original Sonor Box. The owner did not want to replace it because it would cost him too much money. I asked him for a letter stating he would honor any defect in the shell that arose, and while he agreed by phone, he never sent anything. I'd NEVER do business with them again. This was my first purchase from The Drum Shop in Portland, Maine, and I was completely impressed with the combination of attention to detail and proper customer service that I received from Paul when I placed my order online. My 20-inch Zildjian paper thin crash cymbal arrived on time and it was the exact one that I saw played at their website. They take the time to weigh their cymbals and that is of great value when you are comparing likely sound differences in sustain and stick definition, especially among cymbals of the same size. Having previously worked in a few drum/music shops for over 10 years, I feel like I have a good sense of things from both sides of the counter. Having said that, Chris and his crew are a great bunch of cats. Helpful, pleasant, and an great inventory/selection. The showroom is packed full of gear. Sure, they sell a lot online, but this is a great store to visit in person as well. It's not a shell of a retail shop that's used to blowout product online; nope- this is a full service shop. The gang at The Drum Shop Portland, ME are some of the most talented guys in the business, besides demos, playing, knowledge and just plain old fashioned down to earth communication. Stefan, Rob, Tyler, the rest of the crew and the boss Chris (such a) Dealman are awesome. These men are far ahead of their time in knowledge of drums and cymbals, etc. Very much user friendly. When I moved to Maine 10 years ago, I knew I would be starting a community drum circle. I decided to introduce myself to the local drum dealers. First, I went to Portland Percussion where I had a LOT of trouble getting the clerk's attention. I needed to replace a head on a Meinl djembe and was told that Meinl didn't make djembes! I never returned and have steered people away for a decade. Then, I went to the Drum Shop. They ordered my djembe head, no problem. When I told them I'd be starting a local drum circle, they told me to let them know what models of hand drums I'd like them to stock. My drum circle has since grown to nearly 600 members. The Drum Shop staff is always helpful and courteous with my novice drummers and never pressures them into a purchase. (as a matter of fact, one of my novice drummers was considering a particular drum until a Drum Shop employee warned her that I "hated" that drum. The person wound up buying a different drum for half the cost.) In the 10 years I've done business with the Drum Shop, I have found them to be outstanding. These guys cheated me out of a 16'' floor tom I had on layaway. I gave them over $200, then fell on hard times and had to go to re-hab. At he same time, I let them know this as well as gave them my number just in case they needed payment while I was away. Needless to say, I called them recently and spoke to CHRIS. Chris said sorry DUDE, we sold it on ebay over a year ago. I said "why did you do that when you had my name and number as well as my money?" He said too bad dude it was takin' too long. I then said, well at least refund me the money. His reply was this: Ha ha ha no way man, thats long gone! No way. The fact that they sold my floor tom is one thing, for you to keep my money when you didn't do anything to earn it is another. They are theifs. read more

Simply the best drum shop I have ever been to. Amazing selection, knowledgable and helpful staff, and fair prices. I grew up going to The Drum Shop every weekend and taking lessons in the back. The shop became my second home and I stayed for hours after every lesson. The Drum Shop sold me my kit when I was a teenager. I got a used Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute kit and Sabian cymbals. I have used them for years and couldn't be happier. I highly recommend this store to anyone in the market for drum equipment in the New England area. read more
