Spectacular. Absolutely lovely. I came in and sat at the bar for drinks and desserts. I wish that I hadn't eaten dinner already because I would have loved to have eaten more. I can definitely see how and why this place was awarded a Michelin star. The service is fantastic. No joke, the bartender remembered the wine that the man sitting next to me got on his previous visit. And it had been weeks. WEEKS!!! The atmosphere is sophisticated but friendly and accommodating. I didn't feel out of place and was very comfortable. I got 2 desserts, both of which were on the heavier side so I asked the bartender to decide on a drink that would accompany my selections. He made an excellent choice and I very much enjoyed my entire experience. When and if I come back to Amsterdam I am absolutely going to come back here and eat as much as I can. read more

Inside the W hotel you'll find the Duchess, a jewel box of a restaurant. We went there for our 25th wedding anniversary dinner, but we didn't tell the restaurant. Our service was therefore typical...and wonderful. No question too unusual, every action tailored to make us feel welcome. We had two starters and two mains: the starters were a carpacio of yellow pumpkin, which had been marinated in line juice and tasted like heaven. The other was lobster and king crab atop avocado and tomato...yummy. We paired this with a Pouilly-Fume that was also perfect with our Dover sole, a real highlight of the meal. Our other main was lamb chops, served with haricot vert. Delicious, joined to a full bodied red. Finished with a cheese plate for him and creme brulee for me. Delicious food. Lovely ambiance. Beautiful setting for a spectacular meal. Our waitress Stephanie was super sweet. Cocktails are superb. Opted for the pino noir old fashioned. Started with the lobster and avocado salad. Temperature and portions on point. Cabbage salad with radicchio and pomegranates was refreshing and citrus was not overwhelming. The spaghetti with caviar was delicious and buttery until a hair was found- manager and waitress were apologetic and professional. Dessert was the chocolate explosion! The food was all really good. The ambience was also very nice. The creme brûlée left something to be desired and was very disappointing.

It's absolutely beautiful inside. We had the server pick the top ten things for us unfortunately I didn't get any pictures as my friend was on a date lol They had good tequila there which seems to lack in the city. We started with the Lobster and King Crab Salad, Avocado & Plum Tomatoes which was my absolute favorite. Baked Scallop with Mushrooms and Hollandaise, I also really enjoyed this. The Spaghetti with Beluga Caviar was fresh. Dover Sole Meunière light flaky and delicious , Peppercorn Entrecôte was way over peppered for all of us. Decided to try this 1 Michelin Star restaurant for a friend's bday while my friends and I were in Amsterdam. He made the reservations way in advance and the ambience and atmosphere of the place are absolutely grand. Exactly what you would expect of a place called The Duchess. Service was good too as the staff were very attentive. The food was also good and deserving of a one Michelin Star place. I wish I came for dinner so I could try their selection at that time. But the lunch menu will have to suffice. Our group ordered a lot of plates to share from the lunch menu as it was a fixed menu, not a tasting menu. While all the good dishes were good, nothing really stood out as exceptional, this the four stars. And the price was good for lunch. So I would definitely recommend a stop here while you're in Amsterdam. read more

By far the most luxurious and expensive place I've ever spent my money on for drinks and it was all worth it. Located across from the W Hotel. Walking in through the front door and gliding up the stairs feels like going to a different world... beautiful high ceilings, gorgeous decor with a subtle and moody lighting. Pretty sure this is were some of Fergie' inspiration of "The Dutchess album" was taken. Ladies, ladies, ladies... don't be so "Clumsy" now... this is "Glamorous!" Front attendants are so friendly and welcoming. We were seated promptly as we didn't have any reservations that late afternoon. Drinks were so innovative, crafty, cutting-edge and absolutely refreshing. Variety of interesting options on their drinks menu. Nothing to your fancy? Nicely ask your bartender if they would customize your own drink and you'd be surprised how quick and happy they are to oblige on your request. Blown away! Day of excursion exploring Amsterdam can be very tiring at times and this place made it extra special for us. Top notch service all around. High end, modern, chic and ultra expensive establishment. I can totally get use to this lifestyle...I'mmm certain I must be related to Warren Buffet... third distant cousin perhaps? Nah...son! I do really like this restaurant. First, it's so pretty. Beautiful ceiling and lighting. Great service - from the friendly host staff to the bartender and servers. They have an interesting cocktail menu. I tried the tomato and soda. Creative and tasty. The brioche roll and tomato with oil and pepper served first is so good. The tomato is fresh and so good. But I really loved the salt on the pepper. Yum! The tomato and ricotta salad was light and full of colorful and flavorful tomatoes. My husband got the beef Wellington (somewhat the reason we dined here) and loved it. The meat was super tender. The grilled asparagus had lots of salty and delicious cheese and sweet balsamic reduction. I went for the short rib pasta. Quite tasty. The beef was super tender. Kind of like pot roast with lots of black pepper on the crust. We sat at the bar on this visit. The bartender was quite friendly and helpful. Overall great meal and experience. read more

Hotel guest, way too convenient. Think I didn't have full respect for how popular they were here in Amsterdam. Ranked high on another guide and tough reservation around this time of year. Firstly, I would come back in a heartbeat. I went classic, steak, mashed with ttruffle and mushrooms ten ways. Used the sommelier to decide, she was a good help, did not drive a selection I am a full body cab lover and I choose French blend over California pure. 2017 Chateau Cantenac Brown, Margaux Grand Cru. Very nice a bit over priced. When all paired together this was an outstanding pairing and worth the spend. Service, 4.5 - Done well. Staff attentive although they lean towards turning the table, they settled down when I ordered the bottle of wine, server had a few tables sit at same time but still found me and kept all cared for. Others covered when they saw needs. Food, 5.0 - peppercorn entricote, truffled mashed potatoes and ten way mushrooms, topped off with crème brûlée. Steak was not as good as I've had but solid 4.5 (had some char which isn't really my like) but flavor and tenderness good. The peppercorn sauce was on point. Coupled with truffled mashed was great and heavenly when finished with the wine. Mushroom retained wild flavor while still flavorful and buttery and all together great. If you have a chance, you should not be disappointed. read more

As far as the restaurant itself, it is very beautiful and designed well. Food was prepared well and came out in a timely manor. However, their was a huge disparity in the level of service we received in comparison with other tables in the same section. Did we not order enough or expensive food to satisfy their gratuity threshold? We approached management who tried to step in and recover, but even his conversation seemed forced. He offered desserts which appeared, at first, to supplement for the lack of customer service but was weak. Needless to say, we had good food at a nice venue but experienced sub-par customer service for the price tag. If you decide to reserve a table, hope that you end up with a server that will give you the experience you deserve. read more

Great cocktails and desserts, nice to order several appetizers and sides, service was just excellent and friendly, I'd definitely recommend this place but at the same time wouldn't put it as a "I have to go AGAIN" destination if I ever go back to Amsterdam. My boyfriend and I arrived 45 min earlier and enjoyed a couple of cocktails at the bar before moving to the table and diving into the wonderful meal. We ordered: Baked Scallop with Mushrooms Marinated Octopus Lobster and King Crab Salad, Avocado and Plum Tomatoes Sea Bass Carpaccio in Olive Oil and Cress Hand Crafted Pasta with Braised Short Ribs Broccoli and Truffle Gnocchi - the gnocchi was like little fluffy pillows of heaven. Beef Wellington - perfect medium rare Grilled Asparagus with Aged Balsamic Vanilla and Cream Pavlova Chocolate Explosion While it does sound like a lot, it was perfect with just a bit of food left, that we felt satisfied. All dishes stood out and carried flavors and textures just perfectly. I am adding this restaurant to my list of places I love about this city. We went to afternoon tea here during our recent trip to Amsterdam and opted for the full tea experience. We started off with a glass of champagne which was delicious and then moved onto the teas. They had a large tea selection which was slightly overwhelming, and since none of us are regular tea drinkers we asked our server for recommendations to get us started. Her recommendations and all of the teas we tried (we ended up finishing 6 different teas) were delicious. The food was a different story. We started off with scones that were delicious, then the savory sandwiches and quiches also good. However, once the sweets were brought out I quickly realized they did not taste as good as they looked. I love sweets, but these were just underwhelming to me. I loved my experience here though, and would recommend you visit if you've never been to a proper afternoon tea. Also, if you opt for the full tea experience (all the food) I would recommend going as a meal substitute and not after lunch. We were staying at the W (across the street) and naturally dined here our first night based upon ease of eating after a day of travel. Loved this restaurant! We dined here several times since we stayed at the W. In the morning they serve breakfast very early (which is not common in Amsterdam)and is tasty and wonderful. We had some amazing Belgium Waffles, great eggs Benedict and French toast. Our favorite was an egg dish that consisted of poached eggs in a red tomato sauce. That was THE BEST!! For dinner, the menu is extensive and very delicious. It seems to be a popular place as it is quite busy. The staff is SUPER! For dessert, have the chocolate explosion. On Friday January 17th 2020, it was my birthday and weeks before we made a reservation to go to The Duchess to celebrate my birthday with what we thought would be a wonderful dinner and evening. With me I had my Goyard clutch containing our personal items (house keys, both our car keys, alarm key of our house, my iPhone and that of my husband, the wallet of my husband and some make-up). I had put the clutch beside my right leg (the brown wooden chairs had a high back and side rest) so the purse was never insight of people passing by. When we wanted to pay the bill we found out that my clutch wasn't beside my right leg anymore. We looked under our chairs, under the table and where in a state of disbelief. We called for help and a security staffer (Rim Repko) came and we explained that our purse was missing. He went to get a laptop and asked me to login on "find my iPhone" to see if the phones were still in the building as the restaurant is located in the W Hotel. But the criminals had switch off both our iPhones already. We asked him if he can watch the CCTV footage as there were so many cameras hanging in the restaurant (one camera had a clear view of our table). Upon our request he did but we were told we were not allowed to join him. After 10 minutes he returned and told us we had been ROBBED by 2 criminals who are CLEARLY VISIBLE on the CCTV Footage. One of the two criminals acted like he was picking something up from the floor behind my chair while I was talking to friends who were passing by and the criminal had a scarf in his hand and put in over my chair while he was acting to pick something up from the floor. When he got up he had my clutch under his scarf and walked away. They both left the restaurant immediately. Thinking back I remember now that I felt something brushing my right leg but as I was talking to a friend and had my head turned to her I never gave notice). It happened within seconds. My husband and son never saw anything. Also not the friends who we were talking to. What makes it really hard to digest from this robbery is that no one could have seen my clutch as the back and side rest of my chair was high. We highly suspect it's an inside job as Rim Repko informed us that the neatly dressed criminals came in and asked the ladies in the front (these ladies ask you before entering the restaurant if you have a reservation, they take your coat and bring you to your table) that they came in to drink something at the bar. During our courses we were served by different waiters and only they could have seen my clutch next to my right leg. Thank God our son had a house key in his coat and had his iPhone with him so we took an Uber home. Our Tesla car was still parked outside the restaurant but as they stole both our iPhones and the wallet containing the Tesla key card we could not drive the car. After we got home we called our different banks to block our debit and credit cards. We then went back with a 2nd Tesla key card we had at home to pick up the car which was still parked outside the restaurant (they could have easily stolen this as well). I can not even explain the emotional trauma and stress it has caused myself, my husband and our son. As this happened on Friday evening we had to sleep the whole weekend knowing that criminals had the keys of our home and our cars parked in front of our house. As you can imagine we hardly had any sleep at all. The next day we want to the police to file a report. Because the police is understaffed in Amsterdam this can only be done by appointment. On Saturday we e-mailed Rim Repko and informed him that we filed a police report and asked him several questions and raised our concerns regarding our suspicions of an inside job. He told us that a robbery has never happened before in The Duchess and that we had bad luck and the criminals had good luck. Again we asked for the CCTV footage. He then told us he only shares it with the police if they request it because of Privacy Laws. He also informed us that it can't be an inside job as this was not confirmed through the CCTV Footage. I can't not even explain the audacity they have to e-mail us the bill of the evening days later and inviting us back for free champagne and dessert. Instead of asking us how we are doing they send us the bill. Their lack of empathy is beyond disbelief. We will never visit The Duchess again. WE CAN ONLY ADVISE YOU TO WATCH YOUR PURSE AND YOUR BELONGINGS. read more

We booked New Year's Eve dinner at the Duchess through our Ambassador at Marriott. We arrived at the time of the reservation (10:30 pm) and table wasn't ready. We had requested a special table and instead got seated in the middle of the restaurant with tables that still had dirty dishes on them which they couldn't be bothered to clean. When booking the reservation, we asked for the NYE special dinner menu. We were told it wasn't available after 10:00 pm and we would have to order off the a la carte menu. Imagine our surprise that when we finished dinner we could see that other diners around us were still being served the special dinner menu. This could have been arranged all night. And the icing on the cake, the staff abandoned us at the chime of midnight. We had to look for our bottle of wine and serve ourselves. Expectations are high for a supposed Michelin star restaurant and they failed miserably. We would have had a better time at the Foodhallen if it had been open. read more

Relaxing spot in the heart of the city All food is served "family style" and served as ready (not waiting for other meals in the same order to be ready). All food is also placed in the middle of the table so that all guests share each place. For plates that are meant to share, portion size is a bit small (the scallop appetizer came with 1 scallop). Overall great food, but don't know if I'd recommend it for eating with anyone except family and close friends for this reason. The atmosphere is also excellent. The dining room is grand and you can see right into the kitchen. It's the perfect place for a romantic date; even though the room is large, the dimmed lighting and distant seats let it remain cozy. read more

My experience at Duchess was amazing!!! My husband and I found ourselsves without dinner plans one evening due to an unplanned nap that ran too long. We decided to check out Duchess, since it was in our hotel (the W Amsterdam) and although we didn't have a reservation, they were able to find a table for us. I simply cannot say a single negative thing about this place! The service, food and cocktails were all amazing. I could have eaten there every night during our stay but it wouldn't have been fair to the other restaurants that we actually had reservations for. That evening's meal was hands down one of the best meals I've ever had, which says a lot given that I'm from NYC and can be quite a snob when it comes to fine dining. I'm proud to say that I've been to quite a few Michelin starred restaurants all over the United States and in Europe (several 3-star ones, too) and I definitely won't be surprised if Duchess becomes a 2-star establishment before my next visit to Amsterdam. This is a 5 star restaurant in my mind and we had a 6 star experience. The setting for dinner is gorgeous and the service was so friendly and welcoming. Great drinks, truly off the charts good food (don't miss the zucchini salad (seriously) and the spaghetti with caviar! We also had the prawns which melted in your mouth, probably aided by the champagne and butter sauce. Green beans with foie gras, yes please. he small plates make it easy to try a bunch of things. Ice cream made at the table was a delight. The maître de came over at the end of our meal and we had a lovely chat. I booked this on a whim as it was our last night in Amsterdam and we were staying at the hotel. Frankly I was lazy and wanted something easy. We arrived at this "wonderful " restaurant at 2:20pm. Lunch time is from 12-3. There were plenty of available tables but were told by the hostess that there is no availability. After pointing out numerous available tables, she told us that she needs to ask her manager if she can accommodate us. She came back with a negative answer. When we asked to speak with the manager we were told he's not available and if we want to make a complaint, please do so. We just want to let everyone know the name of the manager, Vincent, the guy, who has a position of a manager, but doesn't have managerial skills. Came here for tea time with two girlfriends to celebrate the 30th birthday of one of them. Had originally booked a table, so we got seated right away in the tea room. There's 3 main options if you're going with the high tea ranging from 42 to 52 Euros, but let me tell you we got the mid range option and we could barely finish it, so the 42 Euros option will definitely get you STUFFED!! Service is slightly on the slower side, but then again you do want to sit down and digest everything you eat. Super good! Would definitely recommend for a special occassion! read more
