My husband and I had a wonderful evening at the Duchess on our recent trip to Amsterdam. The ambiance is LOVELY, everyone we interacted with was thoughtful and helpful, and the food was delicious. We especially enjoyed the two people waiting on our table, they listened to our food allergies, likes and dislikes, and helped us order and we were thrilled with everything. The waitress helped me order a drink that is now a new favorite, and was able to work with the chef to alter a few options so they were gluten free for my husband (they also had gluten free bread to start that he loved!). To be fair, we had high expectations given its reputation- but although the food was nice, it didn't blow us away. We did visit on the last day before their winter shut down, so some items were not available, however of the food that was offered I would rate it a solid B. Atmosphere was nice, almost casual for a restaurant of this caliber- which I actually appreciated. Would I eat there again? Sure. That being said, it wouldn't be my first stop upon my return to Amsterdam. read more

Easily the worst service I've ever had. When the staff literally rolls their eyes at you and asks, "Well what do you want?", then walks away and asks you to confirm, "So you're asking me to remove the X from your bill because you refuse to pay for it?"... well that's terrible customer service. There was never an apology from anyone, just the most impressive eye rolling I've ever seen, if only because his eyes managed to stay in his head. The room is to die for. The atrium of this old bank building has been transformed to a beautiful restaurant. The food is really good, a bit pricey, especially for Amsterdam, but well prepared. The menu is creative and appealing. The only comment revolves around the staff, they simply don't get it or are taught not to get it. They are pushy on sales, recommend only expensive items, and our last waiter managed to poor an entire bottle of good white wine in 3 glasses, why I wonder? read more

Awesome place with amazing grandeur! Marble everywhere, awesome ceiling, huge chandeliers, as if this restaurant is beamed over from New York... Very un-Dutch. I like hanging at the bar here, to enjoy the cocktails. Staff is very friendly and: These people understand the art of cocktail shaking! Also try the foie grass donuts. Nice. We had a lovely Christmas brunch here! I emailed to make reservations about a week in advance and it was a very smooth process. Our waitress, Eleni, was sweet and attentive, and made our Christmas morning in a foreign city very pleasant. We opted to do just à la carte menu items instead of adding their buffet (we were still pretty stuffed from 7 courses at Jasper's the night before), but regretted it a bit when we saw all the lovely fruits and juices our fellow diners had. We opted for a full English, eggs benedict, and two teas. The tea portions are generous enough to share, if multiple members of your party want the same tea, and perfect for one if you're nursing a hangover. Both our meals were delicious! The full English was the perfect Christmas breakfast and well prepared. Eleni recommended my husband add an extra egg to his benedict, and he enjoyed it so much I didn't even get to try a bite before it was all gone. We ended our breakfast with a shot of apple ginger juice that was the perfect taste of Christmas. All in all, we highly recommend their breakfast if you're in Amsterdam. read more

Our family was visiting from the US for a few days around Christmas and coincidentally my wife and daughter were celebrating their birthdays during the trip. We thought we would splurge and take them to the Duchess for drinks and dessert. There were 9 of us so we wanted to be sensitive to taking valuable dining room space for just dessert so volunteered to sit in the bar. There were multiple issues from the beginning that are simply unacceptable for someone paying nearly 200 euros for a round of drinks and some dessert. - Overall initial impression was poor. Not a friendly greeting at all and she led us to the bar and sat us at on a long couch where 9 people all sat in a line. When we suggested options for a set up more conducive to conversation we heard "no" with no suggestions until we finally agree to sit at couches across the aisle from each other (still not good) - Drinks came and two Spanish coffees were missing. Our waiter was no where to be found so we had to go the the bar TWICE to get them delivered. To make up for it we received a third one for "free" (more on that later) - We ordered 2 "chocolate explosions" as they are fun to see. Unfortunately they never came and we had to track someone down AGAIN to get those delivered - One positive, they did deliver Happy Birthday sparklers which were unexpected (thank you) - Finally when I was trying to pay, I received THREE checks. One was for a completely different person and one was for two chocolate explosions. These were added when I went to check on the original order that never came. The one bill that was ours had three Spanish coffees on it when we were told the third was complementary due to the excessive wait. I don't want to come across as a whiner but considering the price being charged I expect better and considering this was a special occasion it was very disappointing. read more

On vacation and feeling indulgent/don't give a... We had breakfast here every day. The service is excellent. The French press is very good. I had the French toast as did my child 3 days running. The fruit juices are legitimately fresh squeezed. If you're going to indulge, this place at least makes you feel good about it. read more

A great vibe, young and hip scene. Absolutely beautifull looking restaurant, flower setups and lighting rocks. Food is pricy, but also good and nicely set up. Big ups for the bartenders not going the easiest way but creating great drinks and mixing the drinks in a true coctail bartender ways! The waitresses and hostes were friendly and attentive too. I would recommend this place for people that want to check out the scene and willing to spend on food and drinks. read more

Stay away, stay away, stay away. This place is an official ripoff, posing as as a world-class restaurant, charging overly world-class prices and delivering small portions of bland, flavorless food. The interior is beautiful with a glass ceiling and a modern/art nouveau hybrid motif. The service is friendly and attentive. The food is all presentation and the techniques are of the decontstruct/reimagine in a food lab kind. For starters we had the beet root salad and crab. Sufficient...not bad and the vegetables were very fresh. Then things went bad. For the mains we had lamb chops and the recommended baby back ribs. Both had little or no taste.. Sauces and spices were bland and the meats were flavorless also. They were tender and cooked properly. The baby back ribs was actually one, tiny baby back rib, barely enough for a child or barely passable for a starter. Desserts didn't get any better. We ordered lemon pie and white chocolate desserts. The lemon pie was deconstructed to look like a high school art project. The crust was a thin circle standing vertically that looked like the outer rim of a tostada and the meringues were little drops splattered on the plate. Again, no flavor and you couldn't sink your teeth into it, like you should enjoy a pie. The white chocolate came with a plastic dropper filled with a minisicule amount of chocolate sauce. Again, both weren't very sweet or tasty. The final nail on the coffin was the cappuccino. It was thinner and more watery than a cafe au lait...and the waiter and the chef are Italian! And the final insult was that the price for all of this..... Starters are 15-20 Euros.. Mains are 22- 50 Euros...but ala carte. Sides are another 10 Euros each. Desserts are close to 20 Euros each. With two cocktails each, the bill was over 200 Euros for two. We wouldn't have minded the prices if the food was exemplary. If you want to check out the place, please go for a drink and be glad you're not the poor fools sitting at the dinner tables. read more

The Duchess was very clean and nice on the inside, except its on the second floor and hard to find. We made our reservation for 6:30 pm, which they told us we only had 2 hours at our table. we arrived 5 minutes early and there were only two other tables taken out of the whole entire restaurant. The people who worked there were very rude and took forever to seat us. We had been walking around site seeing all day and I was not feeling well, due to something I had ate prior to coming. I was feeling very sick sitting at the table so I went to find the bathroom which is basically in a whole different part of the restaurant that I was in. So unfortunately I wasn't able to make it to the bathroom and I threw up in the hallway outside of the bathroom. So instead of the restaurant having good hospitality, they asked us to leave and told me that it was a "nice establishment". It was the worst place i have ever been too in Amsterdam and I would never suggest anyone to go there. If I could give it zero stars I would. read more
