Came here twice. First time was an ok haircut and decent service. Free shots were a nice touch. Second time involved a long wait (with a reservation) and barber using a straight razor all over face and neck with no oil or shave cream. Left with painful razor burns, red marks, and large visible cuts on my face and back of my neck. Never experienced anything like this anywhere. Haircut was somewhat uneven as well. I was back in town visiting relatives and stopped by to get a hair cut because this was my go to place when I lived here three years ago. Got a simple 3 cut all the way around no frills. Very disappointed in my hair cut. Showed the barber a picture of my previous hair cut, which is a pretty basic haircut for a guy. Instead of cutting my hair similar to the picture, he gave me a totally different cut. I'm afraid to not wear a hat in public. I'd been going here for a few years and liked Henry. He left but i like the online scheduling and location. I think their service is really slipping. Was there yesterday and the following happened: All staff on their phones and no one looked up when customers were waiting there Owner William gave hImself a shave at his station before heading out for the day The person i scheduled with wasn't in The person who they said I'd see was one I didn't want to see and had a bad experience with one time before (how do you politely get out of that and still get a decent haircut?) My haircut was like 5 minutes long because the guy who took me "thought i was a walk in" and his actual appointment showed up while i was in the chair so he had to hurry up I am done with them. Very disappointing: I walked in on 11am on a Sunday they told me to make an appointment and come back 1.30pm same day. I came back, arrived at 1.38pm. There was a guy on the chair already and I thought: arrived late lost my turn. Lady told me I had to wait until the gentleman was finished then I would have my hair cut. I'm disappointed to make this review, because before today I would've given them at least 4 stars. I made an appointment with Kayla for 1 pm today. I made the appointment online. Everything was all set up. I go in today and they tell me that Kayla no longer works there. Why was that even an option online if she no longer works there? Why wasn't I notified? Why did they wait until I came all the way to the shop before telling me? Then they tell me another person can take me, but I'd have to wait my turn behind someone else. The whole point of my appointment being at 1 was because I didn't have any other time. Also they couldn't tell me where Kayla went to - if it was a new shop, I'd like to go there, but there was no information given at all. This place is great, the atmosphere is cool and the employees make you feel comfortable and welcomed. I have never been disappointed in a haircut there, a little pricy, but worth it. My wife and I live just outside of Chestnut Hill and we spend a lot of our time in the area. We noticed a new barbershop last fall. My wife asked me to check out the new barber shop for past few months and I finally decided to check it out on Dec 26th, 2015. I found the experience at the Duke Barbershop in Chestnut Hill on December 26th, 2015 was subpar. First, I submitted an online appointment for Dec 26th, 2015 and did not receive a confirmation. I fully understand that the 26th is the day after one of the major holidays of the year. However, there was no follow up emails or phone calls days after I submitted the request. It tells me that whoever monitors the online appointment is not doing his or her job. Second, the atmosphere of the shop wasn't inviting. When I walked in, I had to get the receptionists attention. On top of that, one of the barbers was sitting on one of the chairs checking out his phone and ignored my presence. When the receptionist informed me that Shaun would take care of me. First of all, I had no idea who Shaun was. I figured someone in the back would come out shortly to cut my hair. When the receptionist mentioned Shaun's name, the man who was sitting at a chair checking out his phone disappeared to the back. Finally, Shaun came out and introduced himself and then asked me how I would like to get my hair done. The person who was sitting on a chair checking out the phone was Shaun. While he was cutting my hair, he was rather busy taking personal calls and talking to the receptionist about picking up beers rather than focusing on his customer. Definitely, I found Shaun's behavior unprofessional and rather annoying. As a customer, that was not the service I would want to receive at a trendy, hipster barbershop. The Duke Barbershop in Chestnut Hill charges $32 for a full-service haircut. Based on my experience, the haircut wasn't worth the money at all. I could have gotten a similar or better haircut from any other barbershops in the area. I found no value in spending extra dollars for an average haircut with subpar customer service. Perhaps you can relate some of your own personal experience in the past regarding a poor customer service you received from a shop. After receiving a bad customer service, most people would take their business elsewhere. The Duke Barbershop, Shaun and the management team disappointed me with an awful service I received on Dec 26th, 2015. In my opinion, poor management led Shaun's unprofessional behavior. Finally, I wish to decline your offer regarding a free haircut. I see that you are trying to make things right by offering me a free service. When this place opened, I was excited to have a cool barber shop in my neighborhood as the offerings are otherwise slim. I made an appointment for myself and for my son's first ever haircut and they obliged. When we arrived, I was offered a cold beer, which was nice, but I turned it down. They've got plush chairs, magazines and music playing while you wait and the overall decor is "slick man cave". William gave me, in the words of my wife, the best haircut that I've ever had in my life. I've gotten a 2 on the sides and 4 on the top for YEARS but somehow, he turned it into something special AND he finished off my neck with a straight razor and warm shaving cream, which in my opinion, is the pinnacle of a manly haircut experience. For my son's haircut, he exuded calm and friendliness which put us all at ease and cleaned up 2+ years of uneven wild tangles. Its a bit pricier than your average barber shop however, they attention to detail and the level of skill as well as the overall service makes their rates seem like a bargain! This is our place now. A sidenote, you can pay with a card but you can only tip in cash so plan accordingly. read more

Finally, after years of disappointment with Barbers in Philadelphia we have an upscale barbershop with very competitive prices. From a service perspective they are comparable to a shop that I used to patronize that charged $60 a haircut so their $22 price for a buzz cut and exemplary service puts them way above the ghetto fabulous experiences for black men in Philly. I was sitting on the bench outside of the shop, talking on the phone and trying to figure out what direction to go in next in Chestnut Hill when I was warmly greeted and offered a beverage simply because I was there and the weather is warm. I was so grateful for the kindness because little did anyone know, I was having a ROUGH day. I wish I needed a haircut just to support this business! My haircutter gave my hair an uneven, choppy look (a bit of an unflattering shag cut in the back), and kept looking at his smartphone on the counter every time a tone indicated a new text message. I tried twice and it is overpriced ($32 bucks for a regular cut--no shampoo--and it takes 10-15 minutes) Also the haircutter I had evidently lacks skill outside certain types of haircuts. Plus the staff are rude--that is the big turn off. In fact, they are a**holes. Here's an anecdote from today: white guy customer in 60s is sitting, waiting for a cut. His cell phone rings. He picks it up and then pops up to go outside to talk. One of the barbers laughed at him once he got outside (because the white guy was not cool--indeed he was not cool but he does not deserve to be laughed at). Another anecdote: once my hair cut was finished, another idle barber looks at me with a "what are those?!" look. I couldn't believe it. I got a haircut here yesterday. Larry was the barber. My last couple of haircuts have failed miserably. My wife thinks the haircut I got at Duke was the best one I have had in years--and there is less hair to work with these days. So I would highly recommend giving this place a try.
