Just like most reviews here, we stumbled into this place because everything else around it was slammed with 1.5 to 2 hr wait times. Why, because they were all soooo small! The East Ender appeared to just as small, that was until we asked if they could accommodate 7 and all with separate bills (I know, annoying). But we were on a group trip and splitting payments for a whole week each time we went out is a pain in the ass. But they allowed it. And they were great about all of it. The last min walk in, separate tabs, 7 different personalities and "volume" Levels and they were about to start Karaoke night, they were so welcoming . Now I didn't take photos of everyone else's plates because food came out at different times, which we expected and welcomed to make it easier, plus it was dark inside. Smashburger good. Best ever? No. Worth the price? No. But pretty good. I heard that the menu changed and the old burger was so good, that it was written up in several of those online publications that of course the editors know everything about. I went during off hours, but tables were still occupied. Including entitled people who need a whole extra table for their wallet and phone. Ask for a side of mayo, and you get an entire bowl. I was stopping in Portland for a girls trip and we were having a tough time finding a place that could seat us quickly for lunch. We ended up at East Ender and they were able to seat our group of 3 immediately which was awesome!! We were seated in the upstairs area which was super cute. We loved the vibes here with the string lights and moody decor. Our server was also super nice and checked in on us as needed. To start, we split a few oysters which were so crisp and briny! The rock potatoes were also so delicious and I loved the aioli they came with. We also got a pitcher of margs which were pretty standard. For my entree, I had a fish chowder. We decided on the East Ender for lunch because we trying a couple other restaurants for lunch and the wait was crazy for a table for 3!! But East Ender sat us immediately which was the absolute best We sat in their upstairs area which was nice and quaint and our server was nice. We order a couple oysters to start which were great and briney!! We also got some rock potatoes and the special sauce was perfect with them. We had an enjoyable time at the East Ender restaurant and bar in Portland, Maine. We had drinks and snacks here while waiting for our table at nearby Eventide Oyster Co. The East Ender serves oysters too, but since we were visiting from out of town and had already made plans to go to *the* oyster place in Portland, we stuck with Eventide. On a Saturday around 6:35pm, there was a two-hour wait for the only big table inside Eventide. There was no wait for us at the East Ender. We had a group of eight. We stayed here for over 1.5 hours. During that time, I saw several walk-ins have to wait or rethink their dinner decisions. This place is popular too. It's generally first come, first served, but unlike Eventide, you *can* make a reservation (via Resy). This place had a really cool, hip vibe. We sat in the first room, the one with the bar. It had disco balls, half-chrome bulbs, and aqua, green, purple, and red ambient lighting. Good music too. Our large group sat at a unique combination table and bar with a banquette and stools. It worked out well. We had a variety of drinks and a couple orders of the Popcorn Chicken ($13), described on the menu as "fried chicken sprinkled with magic dust served with special sauce." Whatever it was, it was delicious. The portion sizes were generous. The chicken was meaty and tasty. The special sauce was some sort of mayo-based sauce or aioli. Hell, I don't know. It was topped with chopped chives. I got the non-alcoholic cocktail, Hip to be Square ($9), made with pineapple, cardamom, and lime. It was sweet and tangy, delectable and refreshing. I recommend it. The East Ender serves all sorts of drinks, including $32 cocktail pitchers, and has a decent food menu with things you'd expect to find in Maine like the aforementioned oysters, a "Lazy Lobster Roll" ($28), and a "Fish Fry" ($22) made with deep-fried pollock. Happy hour is seven days a week, 3-6pm, and features $7 cocktails and wine by the glass. There is karaoke every night. The East Ender! This is by far my favorite underrated hidden gem in Portland, Maine. When I moved to Portland a little over a year ago I really wanted to dive into more casual spots verses Portlands mainstream places like solo, via, scales etc. This place took the cake and will continue to be a favorite of mine. They have "rock fries" which are potato's that are broken up and fried to perfection! Their salads are amazing especially the Caesar. The mushroom stroganoff is a must try! Honestly, I have had every dish offered on the menu in the last year and I was incredibly surprised with how great each one is. The most stand out dishes to me are the burger, fried deviled eggs, chicken nuggets, wings, salads, and the stroganoff. If you are looking to find a table when the rest of town is slammed, The East Ender is the place to go! Not to mention their super fun nightlife, amazing staff and local owner. Great place, they have a few high table downstairs with a small bar with karaoke. Upstairs is the Restaraunt which is a little dark but quirky with a unique ambiance. Menu is small but they offer plenty of GF options which is hard to find. i will say though the food was phenomenal. Only reason I gave it a 4 star rating is there was only one waitress in the floor and at times we didn't see her for awhile making it impossible for refills. What a beautiful, woodsy, whimsical upstairs surprise in this tiny spot. We wondered in here while waiting for our reservation at a nearby restaurant. All I have to say is that this place (in a way) epitomizes the Portland, ME people. Tucked away, next to one of the most famous restaurants in Portland (Duck Fat), is an inauspicious storefront. The first floor of which is a crammed (but electric) karaoke stage every night! And upstairs is a restaurant with a trendy menu and friendly staff! Came here with a big group (7) for dinner on a Friday night during the off season in early March. We were seated right away upstairs which was extremely convenient. We ordered a few of the mojito pitchers for all of us which were really good. Each of us ordered appetizers for ourselves. I got the sunchoke dip and the rock potatoes. The sunchoke dip was interesting and thick in texture. The flavor was okay but maybe missing a little spice. The have both a bar downstairs and upstairs, we went upstairs due to the busyness of the downstairs bar. They have karaoke every night but in tight quarters. We got the burger and the chicken bites. We stopped in for a quick dinner. We sat upstairs. We ordered the smash burger and the risotto. I ordered the double smashburger. The bun was very fresh but it only came with 1 patty instead of 2. So basically i jist tasted bread and lettuce. The risotto was good. There was a guy that cane over and said they were having a party coming in 90 minutes so they needed the table. I was quite hungry upon arriving to Portland, and needed to find a good meal ASAP! I heard good things about DuckFat (which is next door), but the line was too long so I popped into The East Ender. Inside the vibe is similar to a club, with colourful neon lights backlighting the bar and thus the whole restaurant. The food menu isn't enormous, but the drink list is and they all look amazing! As I said, I was hungry upon arrival and a bit sad to see a $30 Lobster Roll or a few salads... Reluctantly I ordered the Grilled Salad and OH MY GOSH! It was DELICIOUS! Similar to a lot of other reviews, we stumbled on East Ender when other nearby restos had a long 1.5-2 hour wait. Glad we did! Outdoor seating was covered by tarp and thoroughly warmed by heat lamps. Impressed by attention to cleanliness - tables were socially distanced and cleaned between patrons, everyone wore masks and didn't get too close and menus were regularly cleaned. Got the kale salad w hake (salad was plentiful and probably didn't need the extra protein!), brussel sprouts which were flavorful and crunchy and the boy got the fish and chips served w triple fried fries and squash spaghetti. On a chilly night, we both got the hake chowder which was a nice, warm and lighter alternative to thick clam chowder. Great local beer selection too! Portland reco! read more

Thank you. The staff was so friendly and attentive to our group. We were actually six that night. So it was a huge adjustment to fit us in for sure. We had a little tour of the space. They have great seating in both floors. A full bar on each floor as well. The space is perfect for an intimate seating and for groups. Just a great vibe all around. The menu is eclectic and appealed to all members of our group. The burgers are quite popular and were a hit with two in our group. The Stew was new for me and was very tasty. I popped into The East Ender while waiting for a table at Duckfat. I was surprised to find the it was the tiniest Karaoke bar I'd ever seen. The "stage" is literally right in front of the door. My husband and I shuffled past the singer to get to the little bar. We didn't check out the upstairs at all. We were welcomed to pull up a chair by a friendly man with a mustache (who ended up being on the the hosts). The bartender gave us a couple of menus promptly and served up our drinks quickly. The hubs got a beer, and I order a Lefty Lemonade. The cocktail wasn't anything special--just lemonade and whiskey. The Deep Fried Deviled Eggs though... mmmm! This little pre-dinner snack made it a worth while spot to hang out while we waited for our dinner table next door... even if we had to watch and listen to some boring karaoke sessions from just a small handful of singers opting to sing obscure oldies. read more

We ended up here because the other restaurants on the street required a 1.5-3.5 hour wait. An overall positive experience: (+) Drinks are nice and strong. (+) The mussels in the Thai chili sauce had the taste of a thinner curry. It was absolutely delicious with the mussels and we ordered more grilled bread just to sop up all the goodness. Mussels, as per usual, didn't really fill me up completely. (An extra side of 3 slices of bread is $3) (+) No wait at all when we went, but the food was just as good as some other places on the same block. Don't be fooled when you walk in. They have an entire upstairs (and it's got a cooler atmosphere up there). Had the Rib Sandwich, which was very good, and also the rock potatoes that come with it. I have no idea how they got those so crispy, but they were like potato chip chunks. Staff was super friendly. Had a cocktail, three dots and a dash, which was also very good. Lol We wanted to check out eventide for their late night happy hour, but when we got there they told us that they didn't have the late night menu anymore... So we bounced across the street to this place. It was past 9, and people were finishing up, but we got seated right away upstairs. We ordered mainly snacks and appetizers and four plates were more than good enough for two people. We got the wings, hake chowder, pretzel, and mussels. Out of the four, the hake chowder and mussels were the best. I didn't think the pretzel and the wings were worth it. However, the hake chowder and mussels were phenomenal. The hake chowder was really tasty... I do wish they added more hake.. The mussels were really interesting since they soaked it with a thai curry.
