Wow... I've been going to Union for over a decade. Tonight, it would seem, may be the last time I visit. Before I rip them a new one, let me be totally up front and say the service was very good. Like many places in the Portland area, they're short staffed, and the people who work there are doing the best they can. Friendly, like genuinely friendly and nice waitstaff. They're doing the best they can with too few people. So, to be clear if any management read this? Your staff is fantastic. The food? That's another story. They used to have things on the menu like roasted Brussels Sprouts with all kinds of delicious. There was a pot roast, cooked over three days, which melted in your mouth, with truffle oil and parsnips and carrots. The cocktails? WAY above par. Now you may as well go to Applebees. Over seasoned, boring, and generally NOT worth the money by a long shot. It just tastes like all the other places who use Sysco or Gordon foods. I had the burger, which was so average. I mean REMARKABLY average. Yes, the lettuce on it was actually not just boring iceberg, but that doesn't make up for serving someone a mass produced, firmly packed slab with way too much salt. It says it's some fancy farm beef, but it sure as heck didn't taste like it. The dish my wife had was similar. Some decent ingredients but for the most part it was literally no better than what you'd get in something in a mall. WAY too much salt, way too little flavor. I also ordered a Manhattan. In a Manhattan, the forward flavor should be the whiskey (rye or bourbon or whatever). All I could taste was vermouth. AND it was served in a highball glass with a massive ice cube, and it was warm. The ingredients should go in a cocktail shaker or mixing glass, with ice, then stirred for at least 15 seconds while stirring. It should be served in a cocktail glass like a coup or a martini glass which has been chilled. Mine was in a highball glass. Not sure what happened, but I'm sure profits had something to do with it. Nice, friendly service. Enjoyed our meal here. I had the farmers salad with lobster added and it was very tasty. The lobster was fresh and a decent portion. We also enjoyed the hand cut fries - can add truffle powder to it - and the spelt bread. For cocktails I had the dirty moon martini, which was just the right amount of dirt. Our group really enjoyed our dinner at Union restaurant. Making a reservation was simple, and I appreciated that there wasn't a cancellation charge. I noted that we would be bringing a baby in our reservation, and we were given a table where we could park the stroller. The food and cocktails were very good, I especially enjoyed the burrata. Our server was great, and put in extra effort with our wine order. The only thing they could have done better was mention that they had a special honey theme menu available sooner, we had already put in our appetizers when they brought that menu to our table. read more

Union at dinner was excellent just as their brunch was. We started with the charcuterie board and focaccia- the Tasso ham on the charcuterie board really impressed me, as did the cheese with seaweed. Our mains also made everyone happy. My trout was superb with the black lentils. The wine list was attractive and I was very happy with the by the glass options - my Gamay was a great compliment to the trout. The decor in the restaurant is upscale hotel, and on a Sunday night when other restaurants are closed Union is a good option. It makes for a quiet dinner but we had plenty of time to savor the meal. in short--there's so many better places in portland to dine than the union. admittedly, i do love the press hotel. it's certainly a unique building with a great atmosphere, and it's one of my favorite hotels in the area. but why dine here? the whole hotel/restaurant is a part of marriott, which is fine, but there's certainly a lack of charm and personality that you'd otherwise find when spending hundreds of dollars on a meal in portland. i've only ever been here a few times for brunch, and it's always good, but significantly overpriced. they must've expanded the brunch menu significantly since the last time i was here. our meals were all good, although pumpkin spice pancakes in spring? perhaps a few months behind. service is always exceptional though. overall, i'd never recommend anyone go out of their way to come here. especially if you're just visiting, go explore portland and have an expensive meal somewhere else! read more

This is the perfect restaurant to go to before a show at the Merrill Auditorium as it's across the street. We sat at the high tops in the bar and were served by Amy. The bar seats have low backs and are not that comfortable for a long stay. Happy hour specials were excellent, we had $2 Oysters and $7 Brussel sprouts. Their drink special was a sangria for $10. We all had fish dishes (The white fish and Steelhead Trout) Everyone was satisfied but the portion was quite small for the price. Every dish we had was outstanding! The scallops were incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked--tender with just the right sear. The conchiglie was a standout; imagine an elevated mac and cheese, rich and comforting, with a bold twist from the smoked tomato caponata. The regional white fish, which was hake, was delicate and flaky, paired beautifully with savory guanciale and nutty Grana Padano. The oysters were another highlight, served with a currant mignonette foam and a bright splash of lemon--absolutely delicious. For dessert, the crème brûlée hit all the right notes with its perfectly caramelized top and creamy sweetness. We stayed at The Press hotel. On our last day, it was rainy and cold and miserable outside. We were heading home that afternoon and decided to just have lunch at the hotel before we left. There were only a few other diners there and we were seated right away. Our server came over a few minutes later and took our order. We had to repeat it a few times. I think she wasn't paying attention. In the end, one of our orders was still incorrect. My husband said fries a few times and still ended up with chips. The burgers were fine, but nothing outstanding. I don't know if the chips were made in house or not, but they were overcooked. Would I eat here again? I guess if the situation was the same, I would. My friends and I went to the Union to celebrate my birthday, and none of us were impressed. We started with cocktails in the bar, which were well crafted but tiny. As a former bartender, a $15 signature cocktail (that isn't a shooter) should be more than 2 1/2 ounces total. When we were seated for our 7:00 reservation, our table was in an unpopulated section and we were only given the bar menu. We sat and watched as other people got seated in the main part of the restaurant, order their meals and got served as we waited for our server to remember to check on us. When we finally ordered off the PreFix menu - our soup was excellent and we were hopeful, but the wait between our first course and our main course was over half an hour before our server returned. Our pasta was cold and the cream sauce had congealed when it finally did arrive, the chicken add on on my friend's pasta was dry, cold and overly charred (burned). My other friend's steak was not hot, but her fries were fresh. Once again, we were abandoned by the waitstaff to enjoy our (cold) food for almost 45 minutes. As someone who has worked in food service off and on for most of my life, I understand that sometimes things get crazy busy on a Friday night - but in this case, the service was simply terrible, the food was only memorable because it was not fresh or hot. I'm not sure if this fiasco was the fault of the kitchen or our waitstaff, but it was extremely disappointing. read more

Love the look and vibe at the Press Hotel and have been to its marquee restaurant a few times over the years and had decent meals and drinks. However, invited a friend for dinner here recently and we both had a not so good experience. For me, it was $39 for an okay tasting small size burger with a tiny cup of potato chips. $39? Really? My friend got the scallops and she had to ask for balsamic vinaigrette to give it more taste. The service was okay, though the help seemed a bit confused, perhaps because they were new. The vibe is really sweet. It's an old newspaper company converted to a hotel and restaurant. Lots of old typewriters and machine parts mixed in with some plants and books. Cool history. Our server was kind and courteous and did her best to stay on top of things. It seemed a bit chaotic at times. The maitre de couldn't find our reservation at first and had a hard time helping to deliver the food as it came out of the kitchen. The food was extremely flavorful and had unique elements but I kind of wish there was more of it. The apps were minimal - bread and salad- Swordfish was delectable and delicious but the serving was small. Some bread to sop up the delicious puree would have helped. The risotto was actually farro but it was delicious and loaded with depth of flavor. I would order it again. The dessert was my favorite part. Yum!!! Bottom Line: Nice décor, attentive staff and tasty food but pricy. In full disclosure, I only had breakfast at Union. I enjoyed the décor, service and food but found it to be very pricey. Coffee is $5, a breakfast sandwich is $17 and eggs, bacon, toast and potatoes with coffee is $24. I know Maine is pricey, inflation is on the rise and there are a whole host of supply chain issues but even with those factors in mind I felt our breakfast was overpriced for what we got. From all of the wonderful reviews I am sure Union is a better value and overall experience for dinner. They have an open kitchen which is always a good sign and even from a distance we could see the chef seasoning our food. Ambiance is wonderful. Service was impeccable. Dinner was a solid pass. First we can start with the drinks. The Pinot noir was the best part of the meal. Unfortunately the martini was made improperly. The mussels for appetizer were delicious. Broth was great but the accompanying French fries were inedible due to the overwhelming salt. The fiddleheads were also good. The market veggies were salty and oily, but cooked well and had a nice presentation. Main entree.. the Maine lobster bucatini was ok. Lobster was a significantly small serving. The paella was greasy and very, very salty. The chicken fried sole was also very greasy and salty. It was a shame that the food was so inedible. Union has consistently high Yelp reviews as well as amazing photos to match, so when planning places to eat while in Portland it was close to the top of my list. I don't know how I overlooked this, but it wasn't until I arrived at The Press Hotel to check in that I learned that it was housed inside the hotel. I enjoy a good hotel restaurant, so for our last night in Portland we took the short elevator ride to the first floor for some dinner. Union works triple duty; in addition to a sit-down breakfast and dinner spot, they provide small plates for The Inkwell (The Press' bar/lounge) and room service for the hotel itself. Walking into the restaurant we were greeted by a large open kitchen and lots of clean lines. The aesthetic was contemporary with a very open feel and a mostly subdued, grey color scheme. It worked really well and complemented the aesthetic of the hotel while still holding its own. The menu was mostly New American, there was a little bit of everything so it was admittedly a little hard to decide. We started with some drinks - they have a small selection of cocktails which change whether you're there for brunch or dinner; I had the Dreamboat which was pretty good. Onto the food - we decided to order the calamari and Brussels sprouts to start. Both were great, the sprouts were charred well and served with a tasty aioli. I really liked the calamari - it was served fried but seasoned really well and paired with red cabbage to cut the strong seasoning. For my main I got the salmon; it was quite good and served with lentils and beets which provided a nice contrast. As if my side wasn't enough, we also ordered some lentils to share. These were great, they were accented with lemon and dill and served with crumbled goat cheese on top - really nice touch. We decided to get dessert, where I chose the carrot cake. This was served deconstructed style; it was just okay - I thought the cake was too dry, but the cream cheese frosting component helped it a bit. I'm a tad biased because I don't really get the whole deconstructed concept - give me a slice of cake. Service was great; I felt things might have been a little off during the time we were there since our drinks took a long time to come out, but our server was super apologetic which I really appreciated. After not having a formal evening dinner over in Bar Harbor because of their off-peak restaurant closures, coming to UNION located at The Press Hotel, was much needed after our 3 hour drive. Space is airy and Scandinavian-esque furniture gives off a simple- but flawless style. I locked in our reservation right from my OpenTable app and gave us time to check in at The Press, freshen up and head downstairs for dinner. Before looks or music, the only thing hitting me was the pork smell and wondered: what happened to the ventilation fan? Ugggh. Hubs was loving it and knew what he'd have. He combed through the menu and pork wasn't listed. Plus- when you go to a restaurant and see a pig illustration on the inside of the menu- wouldn't you assume pork is being offered? Let's just say there wasn't a pig body in sight for appetizers- much less main dishes. So why the oink smell? Our lightly dressed Salad with lemon+oil dressing was flavorful though, my Campanelle+Crab dish was delightful as was my, 'smooth first, hit you later with a TKO' "Everything Gold" cocktail and hubs liked his steak and cocktails as well. Hotel restaurants frequently get overlooked in Portland, but restaurant week was great! The Press Hotel is the nicest hotel in the city, and Union has the elegance to match. For $40 each, the restaurant menu consisted of the following: -Ricotta gnocchi with sautéed mushrooms, kale and ham hock broth. This mix of pasta in the soupy broth was an ideal start. -Seared duck breast with duck fat roast potatoes, heirloom carrots and smoked rooftop honey. The duck was cooked perfectly medium rare and was tender without being too gamey. -Maine maple pudding with whipped cream, cake crumbs and salted almonds. This was by far the best pudding of my life. Granted, the competition is basically Jell-O, but this was unimaginably richer and creamier. Portion sizes were large and I left ready for sweatpants. Service was flawless. Union was a real winner, and I will definitely be back. read more

This is the kind of review I truly hate to write. Let's start with the positives, this is a beautiful boutique hotel and the bar, The Inkwell, is pretty good. Sadly, and I really mean sadly, the Union Restaurant is just ...not good. On a previous visit for a late dinner we were truly stunned by a pretty expensive steak that was just terrible, especially since it cost $150 (market price). It was a tomahawk, but not as big as one would expect. The service during that visit was spotty and the steak itself was mostly gristle. It was served with some potato sticks along the lines of those public schools used to serve at hot lunch. The potatoes were on top of the steak and must have been there while the meat was resting because they were a soggy mess by they time the meat made it to the table. And then there was this morning. We decided to take a morning drive to Portland for brunch. It was time to give Union another chance. Mistake. My wife ordered Croque Madame (the reason we chose Union in the first place) and I ordered eggs Benedict. The service was slow but Saturday morning in Summer in Portland, chronic staff shortages, etc. and I can forgive that. To put this into perspective, Union is clearly trying to be a fine dining restaurant, and the prices reflect that. For example, breakfast plates in general come with greens, not potatoes, which are extra. This breakfast would have been close to a hundred dollars with extras such as cappuccinos and a tip-- not exorbitant but not cheap either. My wife's Croque Madame came with a very crispy sunny side up egg -- okay that may be a legitimate culinary decision, but it covered a badly burned mornay sauce (see photo). She was in the process of sending the dish back for a re-do and I was disappointed that we would essentially not be dining together after she refused my offer of one of my eggs Benedict. And then... The should-have-been-poached eggs were not. They were hard boiled, like little handballs or something. I could actually just pick up the yoke with my fingers. We got a waiter's attention he said something along the lines of, 'yeah, someone else had a problem with their eggs earlier...' when I showed him the little hardballs. Oddly, he just backed away without removing the dishes. A manager came over and helpfully pointed out that those eggs did not look right and could he take the plates away? We agreed, declined a re-order and offered to pay for our coffees (the potatoes we ordered never arrived). He did offer to get us replacements and said there would be no check but in all honesty, I am just done with this place. I also understand a lousy brunch is a first world problem -- so let's keep all this in perspective. But a place like Union, serving two dishes to the same table that were clearly mistakes is also worth noting. Eating out has become more expensive, service has declined, and it is important to my mind that we note it when something is so far off the rails. Had the $21 burger at lunch today. Ordered it med. rare came out well done. Was then told after asking the server to make another one they dont cook to temp. Ok. It was also on the small side and greasy enough that the bun quickly turned to mush. Was heavily salted to the point that it overtook my taste buds. The coffee was good, service was good. Still tipped 20% after the tax cuz my sister-in-laws friend is the manager of the hotel. Would def avoid going here the prices do not fit the food tho. Probably the most expensive burger I have ever ordered in my 42 years on the big blue marble we call Earf. Earth is def round dont listen to Kyrie Irving. For such a pretentious place, you'd think the food would be better! My entree was trout ($35) served with chopped beets-- meh -- and black lentils that were undercooked, they were like tasteless little pebbles and inedible. The fish was quite good, so I ate that. My companion liked his sole but it came with a strange sort of pearl pasta (with a name we had to Google) laced with stringy kelp. He said it was "okay" although I tasted that weird pasta and had to spit it out. The real problem was dessert. We ordered an Apple Crisp. It never came. After about 15 minutes, someone from the kitchen came over and promised it would be out soon -- he said it had gotten burnt and so they were starting over. Our waitress, who was great, told us what really happened: they set the timer for the crisp but forgot to put it in the oven! So then they did put it in the oven but it was grossly undercooked when it finally arrived, big chunks of unpeeled apple and no crisp to be seen, under a scoop of vanilla ice cream nobody asked for. The only thing that is really good at Union are the Brussels Sprouts! Order them at the bar with a drink and go have dinner somewhere else. read more

In around 745pm. I was seated by the window. It took awhile but the restaurant is not crowded. Ambiance is newish, upscale with lots of open area. It is set up with tables on the edge of a large space in the shape of an "L". There are couches and chairs on the other side of the place. Ashley my server showed up I informed her that I wanted a half dozen oysters. Also that I would be getting a glass of wine once I looked at the menus. That was 15 minutes ago. Another server brought my oysters. I ordered the French Sauvignon Blanc from Ashley who showed up with the wine after I had finished my oysters. The oysters were very good, two different types and presentation was very nice. I then ordered the Octopus. I was informed it was a very spicy Korean dish. Ok let's see. The dining area has a few tables along the window and inside. I sat by a window. Also there is an open kitchen surrounded by a long bar. I am staying in the hotel. Meanwhile my water glass has been empty for many minutes and the candle on my table has gone out. I mentioned these things to my server. The other tables all have candles burning. Details matter. To me. Another person shows up with a lighter and new candle. I am lit now. My water glass is still empty. Service was not so good. Yay! Water. There must be something going on in the kitchen as it has been too long for my appetizer dish to arrive. Here it is. It is a bit spicy but delicious, well presented and served with a quail egg on top. I enjoyed the octopus. My server seemed a bit overwhelmed, but cheerful and always smiling. She clearly had too many tables tonite. I had what was basically two appetizers - 6 oysters and a piece of octopus and a glass of white wine ~$75. Not a good value. My giving the current version of The Union 3-Stars is being generous and reflects its prior 4+ status for me (I might have actually rated it as a 5-Star in the past -- but its status is plummeting so quickly that I've lost sight of that potential). In fact, I'm tempted to give it 2-Stars but...again, being generous. Ultimately, VERY disappointed with the re-opened/new menu Union Restaurant brunch experience to the point that, after a dozen or so visits over the years, I don't anticipate another. Key points: the food selection, quality and volume have dropped precipitously. In the past, having seen dinner meals that were quite expensive (and never partaken), I was impressed by the relatively inexpensive brunch experience. However, the prices have bumped up while the rest of the experience has declined. In addition, the service I received two visits ago was very disappointing. Despite the above-mentioned Key Points at that time, I thought I'd give it another try -- and though they remained (and may have actually been worse this most recent time), at least the service reached its previously impressive levels. Decided to finally give this place a try after staying in The Press a few times and it didn't disappoint. Got a reservation despite being a less busy time of the year just in case. Got seated quickly and had a friendly and attentive waitress. She also knew the menu very well and talked about her recommendations and the newer items. Was nice to hear about the rooftop honey that is made by bees on the roof of The Press Hotel (that was absolutely delicious featured on the Buttermilk Biscuits & the Cheese & Charcuterie. The biscuits were very sweet and crumbly and almost came off more desert like than a bread starter but no complaints about it. The cheese & charcuterie was good as well with the smoked meats and honey being the highlights. Would likely pass on it next time though for the price point. Me and my girlfriend each had two different cocktails from their current offerings and while we enjoyed them I do believe we have had tastier ones elsewhere in the area. They also did take a good while of a wait to receive. For the main dishes I went with their newer offering of the Squid Ink Bigoli Pasta which was my first time trying squid ink pasta and I was quite pleased with the dish. It came with lobster meat which is always nice and certainly would be a treat for those visiting from away. My girlfriend went with their pan roasted ribeye which she enjoyed as it was cooked to her liking but wished it was warmer as it felt cold. We knew we had to try one of their desserts as well to finish the meal and we went for splitting their S'mores Trifle. It came with toasted marshmallows, graham crackers, bourbon chocolate cream, caramel, and bananas. Definitely a tasty end of a meal and perfect to split with your special someone. Overall I'd recommend giving this place a go. I could name places I'd recommend in the area before here for cocktails or dinner but this place holds it own. Friendly service and tasty food and drinks. It is a place where the bill can add up fast though with cocktails/wine, and or starters. Most awesome lunch in years. Started off with Brussels Sprouts. Served with two little dollops of lemon aoili and a grilled lemon half. Best sprouts ever. Order as a starter for the table. My guest had the Red Flannel Hash with Poached Eggs breakfast skillet and I had the Fried Fish Sandwich. Delicious iced coffee. Service was attentive without being annoying. read more

Will return. This restaurant is at the Press Hotel - if you like old typewriters which it has many in their lobby, then do make a bathroom trip. The decoration of the restaurant is simple and woody. The serving staff are efficient and professional. They serve their oysters with cocktail pearls - nice touch. The scallops entree is heavenly good: succulent, lively and tasty, it's bit salty but you still can taste the sweetness. The Bangs Island mussels (house green curry, lemongrass, lime leaf, chili - oh my ... ) is served with a warm baguette - oui - is excellent too. Both entrees are on the salty side, which fit my palate, -:) When we ask for bill, are told is paid for it. The restaurant is relatively empty because we got there a little after 5. When we press the staff, does he reveal is the next table, with two ladies. After a little debate, I walk over and thanked them. The younger one is a little surprised but the older lady said, "you're welcome. I never forget a beautiful face... have we met somewhere?" She does look like a relative I had, grandaunt Lucy. Although Lucy was Chinese but their similarity lie in the way they present themselves: starting from nicely coiffed hair down to matching earrings, not to mention the makeup. On the second thought, she does look like my editor and a good friend Lynda. But I don't think we've met and I told her so. Maybe we've met but I'm senile ...
