A much needed Tiki spot in Roc! Easy Sailor is one of those spots whose entry many of us have been awaiting in the area. I'm glad they are here. If you aren't a Tiki connoisseur you should still check it out for their unique take at South Asian and East Asian cuisine. The drinks are stellar. Very refreshing and smooth. Gotta remind yourself to go easy on them or you might find yourself very drunk very soon. The food is good. I wish some of the dishes came with the option to have a side of rice instead of ordering it separately. The mood, aesthetic and vibes hit you right including the decor and lighting. Take a moment to look around and above you to appreciate the art and craft mounted on the walls. Even the wallpapers contribute to the Tiki vibe. It's well done. Sean took care of us the whole time we were there. He is so warm, welcoming, patient and ready to give you suggestions from the menu based on what you need. Importantly Sean is attentive and makes sure your specific needs are taken care of. As for Drinks, Mai Tai- 4/5 It was a pretty well balanced Mai Tai. It is a strong smooth drink. Sherrykiller- 4/5 I liked the balance of flavors and how the sours managed to hold their own in this drink. Boomslang Fang- 4.5/5 Another smooth yummy drink. The flavors complement each other. Boozy Shipless- 4/5 Well presented. Tropical flavors through and through which I loved. I was not a fan of the garnish on top at first but it grew on me eventually. Now the food, We started with Sesame Garlic Brussels sprouts. 4/5 for that dish. Beautiful flavor. Well roasted sprouts. Coconut Sticky Rice- 5/5 Perfect rice. Well made. Well presented. The salty and the sweet flavors have wonderful chemistry. The rice was the right amount of fluffy and soft. Mandarin Tea Chicken- 4/5 Very yummy. Chicken was wonderful. I wish it came with rice and had more lean white meat as it seemed that it had more fatty dark meat. Jaffna Shrimp Curry- 4/5 Wonderful dish. The shrimp was well made. Perfectly cooked. The lentils could be more softer. The sauce was beautiful and combined all aspects of this dish perfectly. I'm not sure what leaves they used for garnish. I hoped to see curry leaves in there given the South Asian roots of this dish but alas they weren't there. Nonetheless it was a wonderful meal. read more

Pros: They have some vegan options. Our server (C.J.) was efficient and friendly. The décor is nice. Our table got free shots because one member of the party was celebrating her birthday at Easy Sailor (she also received leis around her neck). Cons: Expensive. Small portions. Food is OK, but not worth the cost. Drinks are VERY expensive. The vegan appetizers are coconut sticky rice, sesame garlic vegetables, and kung pao cucumbers. There is one vegan entrée: Spamfu fried rice. The coconut sticky rice was decent, but not filling. And it's hard to eat it without making a big mess, because they foolishly serve it to you in a small, overstuffed dish with no plate under it. So when you dig into the ball of rice with your fork, you end up dislodging bits of it all over the table. They really need to figure out a better way to serve it. The sesame garlic vegetables were quite good (better than the rice), but also not filling. My wife had the Spamfu, which was a surprisingly small portion given that it's billed as an entrée. The vegan bits of "Spam" were cubes of marinated tofu, and there wasn't much of it. Given that tofu and rice are both cheap, the cost of that dish was pretty outrageous. And speaking of outrageous costs, the fancy drinks were priced astronomically high. The menu is written in a small font and is hard to read, especially given the dim lighting in the restaurant. I had to use my iPhone to take pictures of it, so I could magnify the photos on my screen. The water carafes are impractical. They have very long, thin necks, which means you can't put ice in them -- and they tend to block your view of other people sitting at the table. They don't hold much water, so you have to keep asking the server to refill them. And the water glasses are too small. The restaurant really needs to get bigger (but squatter) carafes that hold ice, and they need better water glasses. If you're not especially hungry and money is no object, then maybe Easy Sailor is right for you. Otherwise, I'd skip it. read more

Cutest speakeasy off of Park Ave. We did not have reservations but waited in the "travel" office and got seated quicker than expected. I do believe a deposit is required for online reservations, though I'm not sure if that goes towards the bill. The drinks, decor, and vibe are very tiki themed. If you're looking for a unique and fun dinner/bar in Rochester for a date night or group event.... This is PERFECT. It's almost like a speakeasy, where the front is set up like a travel agency and once you're checked in you get transported into this hidden gem tiki bar!! The food was delicious! I came here with my bf and friends. They were able to accommodate our allergies as well (I'm gluten free and my bf can't have dairy, eggs, nuts, fish, and they were still able to give him lots of food!). Made a reservation per the website recommendation and it is small inside so if you want to be sure to get a table, I'd agree. It's a fun little spot. The outside is decorated as a travel agency and the host walks you in. Our server was friendly and answered our questions about the drinks and food. Their menu is a "sharing menu". I will say that I think the best value are their family style platters. We tried the Mahalo pork which was good. Likely enough for 2-3 people. The Duck Spring Rolls were good but I didn't ask how many came in an order. It's 2 rolls for $18, which is not a great value. The Yaki Skewers were good. We got the shoyu chicken but again it's $15 for 3 skewers so not a great value. Drinks average $18 but they were good and came with fun umbrellas etc. Overall we'd return for drinks and maybe the pork platter. 4 stars for service and theme but 3 stars for overall value. In through the front door, from the tempestuous outside that can only be classified, "Rochester," you find yourself in a small travel agency. There is a little port-hole through which you can glimpse another world. The travel agent, sitting behind a desk, asks if you have reservations (it's good to have reservations, but we went on a Monday evening, and we would have been fine without). She leads you through the giant wooden door and into Easy Sailor, a hidden tiki bar in the midst of a strip plaza on Park Avenue. There is an expansive food menu, and an even expansiv-er drink list. There are going to be a lot of (drink) ingredients on there that you've never heard of. Don't be afraid to ask! Also, don't be afraid to be like, "My last cocktail was really good -- for my next cocktail, maybe something a little moodier, less sweet, and more complex?" These bartenders really know what they are doing, and they'll suggest some options for your next drink. The pork skewers are rather good, as are the duck spring rolls. The only real downside is price: the spring rolls are $18 for two (delicious!) spring rolls. The best bet for food is to go with the shareable platters. The maholo pork platter comes with these plantain/banana crispy things (basically think sweet potato wedges, but banana-ey), delicious coconut rice, and, served within a pineapple half, braised and soft pork that is unlike anything you've had before. It was plenty of food! For two people, we ate like 90% of it. For cocktails, many of them are going to be sweet. It is a tiki bar, after all! Recommendations are to, once you've experienced a "traditional" mai tai or painkiller, go for something completely new and exotic! This is the place to do it, for sure. Bartenders are fantastic & will explain anything on the menu which for me was a lot as many drinks had ingredients I didn't know. Definitely tiki bar vibes. We did not get any food on the night we went, strictly cocktails and we were not disappointed Other than at a Chinese or Sushi restaurant I have not had tiki cocktails . These drinks on the menu are one not like the ones one would typically make at home or even order at most cocktail bars. They have some pretty obscure ingredients and often a good number of ingredients-artfully presented and they are complex in their evolution while imbibing Yes the drinks here are a bit more pricey than other bars in the city, but having experienced The Easy Sailor, I understand. I would highly recommend and I hope they have great success ! Tried several of the Tiki drinks - spot on and surprisingly not cloyingly sweet; perfection in a peacock vase or kissing frog mug, or zombie glass. Started with duck spring rolls that were fantastic with a Thai chili dip (not too hot). Then on to Bento Box - several different delectables including sticky coconut rice, soy sauce marinated hard boiled egg, uni butter for won ton chips, and pickled veggies. Mahalo Pork served in a pineapple with coconut rice and spicy fried bananas - wonderful and unique. We sat at the bar, our bartender, CJ is a masterful beverage magician - we let him know what we liked and he came up with some wonderful concoctions for us, all with Tiki flair! By the way, you can't see anything but the travel agency through the front window - they will transport you to the Tiki realm when your time is right - really should make reservations, even for the bar; but they did seem to have some walk-in availability too. Came on a last minute road trip to Rochester & this place is a MUST. Fun, memorable experience that is well orchestrated with a greatly curated decor. The pink haired hostess w/ the mostest (she made us a thoughtful handwritten list of places to see in town!) & Shawn were awesome! The drinks are STRONG but delicious. The four of us were immediately impressed with the speakeasy style and the fun decor was great; not at all cheap looking. Hostess and waitress very friendly and helpful. The food we ordered was hot and delicious. The menu was pretty limited but maybe because it was a Sunday? This is not a good place to come if want a large platter of food or if you're very hungry (unless you have a lot of money to spend).I was thankful we went to another bar prior for hors d'oeuvres. They have a lot of crazy craft cocktails with a lot of fun and crazy names. The waitress would have happily explained I think had we asked her for more information. 3 of our 4 drinks were REALLY strong. I'm not big into the cocktail scene-so consider the source -but I didn't recognize many of the ingredients they used in their cocktails. So maybe it was just me but I would have been just as happy with a large "regular" daiquiri than the one I got in a wine glass which tasted like medicine to me. It was honestly undrinkable and I asked if I could order a Mojito. Got it- much better and nice fresh mint. I really hope they can stay in business because Rochester needs quirky fun places like this. To that end, my advice to Easy Sailor would be to keep the fun names but take out the tippy-top shelf liquors and put in something more pronounceable, lower the prices a couple bucks, and add more fun and quirky decorations to the glass. I think you'd get more repeat business that way. We had fun putting the flowers from the glass in our hair. We would only probably go for A special occasion again. Speaking of which, we were celebrating a birthday and the waitress wished her a happy birthday but that was it. I wouldn't expect clapping and singing but how about free desert, or drink or shot? Why is it when you tell restaurants you're celebrating a birthday they don't do anything? That's disappointing and would have made another star if they had done something nice.
