Husband came here for the first time to get a haircut. Two barbers were standing there when he walked in, no greeting, very standoffish. They did look him up and down and asked what he needed help with..... clearly you walk into a barbershop to get a haircut. The conversation was uncomfortable and by the end one guy said "well we are going to close soon" which insinuates they don't want his business. They were very judgmental and extremely rude. I called several different places and was really nervous to go anywhere really to get my hair cut having been with the same barber for over a decade. This was the only barbershop that called me back and were really kind and encouraging to come try them out. Worst haircut i've ever gotten. Gwendy fucked me up real bad. Overpriced, ugly, uneven, and not what I asked for. I'm a punky butch lesbian with blue hair and somehow Gwendy made me look like a fifth grade boy whose mom decided needed a last minute at-home haircut before picture day. I look like a 75 year old man whose favorite hobby is driving his lawn mower to the golf course. I look like my name should be Craig. I don't think Gwendy believes women can have short hair/men's cuts, and purposefully left bits longer than I wanted to spite me. She certainly showed a lot of spite towards me in her complaints (see below). ATMOSPHERE/RECEPTION: 2/10 When I arrived 10 mins early for my 5:45 appointment, no one was there welcoming in customers. I wait around for a few mins to see if anyone would come out of the back (i assumed it was a break room) before leaving to go get coffee. When I come back at 5:45, still no one there. Eventually, another customer (who i met by chance at the coffee place) had to tell me that the room in the back was for cuts, not just a break room. So my appointment is already starting late, and then Gwendy sat me in the chair, and spent 15 mins on her phone ignoring me while buying leggings. At this point, I didn't even know if she was the one doing my cut or just another customer. She also answered a phone call during my haircut. Only positive thing I can say is the shop is pleasantly lit and has a good array of products on display. LISTENING TO CUSTOMER REQUESTS: 1/10 Came in asking for a taper to turn my grown out mohawk mullet into a new style. Gwendy told me I didn't want that and showed me a more feminine pixie cut. I really didn't want a feminine haircut. I showed her a picture on my phone of a more butch lesbian style to my liking. She seems confused by the haircut and shows me feminine haircuts again, this time with longer sides. I don't really have the terminology to describe what I want. I end up telling her "as long as the length comes off the back and the sides gradually go into the longer bits on top, we're good." The entire time Gwendy made me feel unwelcome and guilt tripped. Throughout the appointment she's complaining that she doesn't want to be there, that her boss scheduled her wrong, that she wants to go to target. Then she complains that my dyed hair is turning her hands blue. She complains that my hair is too short to use scissors on the sides, despite me asking for a taper WHICH USES CLIPPERS. The only time she pulled out her clippers was to chop a straight line up the back of my head to remove my mullet tail. she put in some layers but the whole shape is wrong. my head is a strange poofy square now that is still quite long in the back. So ask 1) "cut the back short" = fail Ask 2) "make the sides go gradually into the top" was also a big fail. She cut the sides unevenly--I have a weird tuft next to my ear that she sort of trimmed shorter when I pointed it out. sort of. I'm not happy dude. PRICE: 1/10 I go to barber shops specifically because I am a punk butch lesbian and I want to receive men's cuts. The $40 price at Empire is not typical for most other barber shops I go to, especially without a wash. The amount of guilt tripping I received during the haircut about my hair turning her hands blue made me feel bad, so I tipped. I shouldn't have even paid what I did pay, never mind a tip. I do not trust Empire to fix the cut, and I will not be returning. I can't speak to the quality of any other barbers there, but Gwendy did not make me feel welcome, and did a shitty job. TLDR save your money and get a cut $20 cheaper and of better quality next door at the patio barber shop. Patio fixed the mess Gwendy left behind, and only charges $18 for their cuts. read more

I have been going to Empire Barber for a little over two years and never had a bad experience. The barbers are professional and always create a welcoming environment. I like that when there's children in the shop, they do not use profanity or play music that uses profanity out of respect. In my two years going to Empire, I've been getting my hair cut by Scotty. Before going to Scotty, I was going to a hair salon and noticed the hair stylist kept missing up my hairline. Scotty quickly fixed this issue, and now I will not have anyone else cut my hair. I appreciate that I don't need to tell him what I want, and all I have to do is sit down. In fact, I don't feel the need to examine the haircut before I leave. In two years, I went to Empire, Empire had two owners, and I noticed the difference in the quality of the barbers is far better with the new owner. If I need a haircut and for some reason Scotty is not available, I trust all the other barbers that are currently in the shop. If you're looking for a new barber, check out Empire and ask for Scotty. I have been going to Empire for 3 years know and every time I go I remember why I love it so much. Getting an appointment is so easy! The person that usually answers the phone is Ashley, she is super nice and helpful and always ensures my visit goes great. She makes sure the shop looks clean and will offer you any kind of beverage as soon as you walk through the door. Her decorating skills are also amazing, changing every month based on the upcoming holiday. When I first came to the shop I would see Kris, the haircut would always come out great and I would leave feeling happy with my cut. One time kris wasn't available when I wanted to book and appointment so another barber, Scotty, was suggested. I gave him a try and loved my haircut even more. I found Empire Barber Company on website that list businesses that are welcoming of trans people. I looked there because although I am not trans, I AM a woman with a fade and have had some pretty gnarly experiences in other barber shops. After finding them on that site I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the reviews and really excited to get in for my appointment. I called and got an appointment for the next day with Scotty, which was the luck of the draw but based on reviews I knew was a win. My first cut I went in and although I was super nervous I was immediately put at ease with their welcoming nature and just plain awesome aesthetic. My haircut was one of the best I've ever gotten, he listened to what I wanted, made suggestions which I appreciated SO much, and then got to work. He really is a master of his craft. I've since gone back for a second cut and already have my 3rd scheduled. The owner was there the whole time and talked to me and other customers too. It's not rigid or forced like at other places, it really just feels like hanging out with friends and I really appreciate that too. I went in yesterday with my husband to get my son's hair cut. He hates getting his hair cut, and has an extremely difficult time sitting still. Our barber's name was Scotty. Scotty was extremely friendly, patient, and kind to my son. He took his time making sure the cut was perfect, and helped my son relax in the chair. Despite my son squirming constantly throughout the haircut, he spoke softly and nicely to him and made the experience phenomenal. I was dreading the hair cut and Scotty did an amazing job! My husband also got his hair cut after my son and he did an awesome job! My husband looks as handsome as ever and my son looks so grown up with his hair cut! This location has multiple independent barbers. When I called and needed an ASAP appointment, Kris was offered. Kris is solid and knows how to handle a razor. She also helped me look presentable for family photos and travel. She knows how to give your look the edge while also helping you maintain a zoom-friendly appearance. I recommend her, but please leave an appointment slot for me, ok?!? You must call to make appointments (I wish the shop would add an online or text option). They do have small reminders/confirmation for your appointment. You pay the barbers directly and Kris accepts payments via Square (as I am sure others do, too). Walk-ins are not likely to be accommodated, so be sure to call in advance as much as possible. read more
