My wife booked this event for a "family event" while my adult children were home for the holidays. I must admit that I was not looking forward to the event, but was very surprised by how much fun it was. They offered a variety of scenarios and we chose a disabled Cold War era Soviet submarine that we had an hour to restart and prevent a missile launch. The rooms were well designed and engaging. The solution was very challenging but we were able to solve it with just 4 minutes to spare. Overall a very fun experience with family and we are still talking about it days later. The theme picked was Butchers Basement and although it was marked as "difficult", we escaped! This was the first Escape Room I have been to, but we had a blast! We were in a serial killer room that was creepy! My friend and I had 5 kids with us ages 11-16 and we managed to "escape" with 3 minutes to spare. Everyone was able to contribute and had fun. Whoever monitored the room from afar helped out a couple times when they saw that we were really struggling, which was nice without it being intrusive. My friend and I did The Lost City of The Jaguar King when we visited Portland in July 2024. It was both our first time doing an escape room and we had a challenging, but entertaining time. I especially want to thank the owner for making the experience accessible for the two of us as deaf customers. The TV screens in the rooms had instructions and would display specific hints that were updated when appropriate, based on what we were struggling with. We were actually able to escape using only a couple of hints and the puzzles were definitely creative and fun to do! I would recommend this escape room to anyone visiting Portland. :) read more

My wife and I are seasoned vets of Escape Rooms. Our kids are newer to escape rooms and The Lost City of the Jaguar King was their 2nd ever escape room. We chose this room because it's listed as "easy" on their website. We completed phase 1 of the room in less than 10 minutes. It was fun and creative. Phase 2 of the escape room was absolutely miserable. It did not flow and literally made no sense. I mentioned to my wife on 3 separate occasions while in the room that "this is the worst escape room we have ever been too". We had to use all 3 of our clues and then some and still made little to no headway. (Again my wife and I have done over a dozen escape rooms and have only failed twice) If my children weren't with me, I would had walked out with time still on the clock. read more

I have so many great things to say about my experience with this place in Portland! I'm a summer camp administrator in Maine and I'm always looking for fun and different places to take my campers on trip days and this place didn't disappoint! I was on a strict budget and they totally made a great event happen for us. I brought a group of 18 girls (ages 10-13) and 11 adult staff and this was a great activity for us to do before we headed out for lunch! I split the participants into groups for each room and the man working there that day took over from there! Everyone enjoyed the rooms - AND WE ALL GOT OUT! We had a little extra assistance I'm sure, but it was such a success. My group did "The Butcher's Basement," and we made it out with only 6 seconds to spare, but we did it. The girls talked about it for DAYS after our trip and I've recommended it to my camp colleagues for future trips. Be prepared to pay for parking on the street (coins for meters) or in a garage. We arrived in 15-passenger vans and parked on the street for our Wednesday morning event. Look forward to heading back there next year and seeing if they have any new rooms! read more

We are escape room enthusiasts who were visiting the Portland area and stumbled upon The Escape Room. For two of us, we were able to book an entire room to ourselves for $70, which I think is a very reasonable fee compared to other rooms that we've done. On this visit, we escaped from the London Blitz room. The staff was very friendly, and they accurately advised us that the escape room we picked could be completed with just two people (some escape rooms that we've done have required more than two to complete). As a positive feature, The Escape Room has lockers with supplied locks for the escapees (customers) to store their possessions while participating. The escape room itself was billed as an 'intermediate' room, and I would say that it was labeled fairly accurately. There were a couple puzzles that I thought were slightly difficult, but most people would probably find this room manageable and fun; the puzzles were clever and there were some nice implementations that we hadn't seen in other escape rooms that we've done. Overall, The Escape Room is definitely worth checking out, and it provides a really fun activity that is unlike a lot of the other things to explore in Portland. The business was very professional and it was on-par with many of the better escape room businesses that we've visited. If you are looking for a mental challenge combined with some fun, I think this is worth checking out. Good luck escaping! read more

I had SO MUCH FUN here! I was visiting Portland with my boyfriend and after a bottle of wine at dinner we somehow thought it would be a great idea to do an escape room. We yelped for escape rooms in the area and we were able to buy walk-in tickets for The Escape Room and were miraculously the only two in the room we signed up for.The first escape room we tried was the Butcher's Basement which I would 100% recommend listening to the online suggestion for 4-6 people. It has a low a low escape rate (less than 20%) and we definitely needed more people in the room to work on activities simultaneously, we did not escape (the bottle of wine before the escape room definitely didn't help). After two days of hiking in Acadia, we decided that we needed redemption and came back to this location on a Sunday afternoon. This time we tried easier room which was Pharoh's Tomb and were able successfully to escape the room. They have lockers outside to lock small items in which was a definite bonus. Will definitely come back when we're in the Portland area. read more

It took time but we found an escape room open on a Tuesday!!. Such friendly staff. I absolutely love escape rooms and have played in many different parts of the country. Some good things come out of Covid...when you book you have the room to yourself. I personally hate playing with strangers. We were able to play with a party of 3 for $25 a person. Rooms can hold up to 8 people. It was awesome. The rooms are well set up. Some of the items were worn down and could of used some touch ups especially when there were times we hard a hard time making out symbols or numbers. Either way, we loved it and got out with 6 seconds to spare. You have 3 clues you can ask for. We did the Butcher's basement. It consisted of 2 rooms total. Visiting Portland over a long weekend we ended up doing two rooms here - the Speakeasy and the Bucher's Basement. Both rooms had a variety of puzzles and locks and required logic to get through. This was my first time in an Escape Room game. I had 4 other people with us. We did the Pharaohs Tomb. Sadly, we failed, but it was a blast!

Having done quite a few escape rooms (in Maine and around the country), I was really disappointed in the London Blitz room here. The room was too short, simple, and linear. Aside from finding items, it felt like there were only 3-4 actual puzzles to solve, and the space felt like a big waste of potential. It was sparsely decorated and it seemed like very little effort went into the set and props. There were very few items in the room that weren't used. The weirdest part though is that they leave the windows open looking out on Congress Street, which further sullies the immersion aspect. (You are supposed to be in a London flat during a WWII air raid... instead it's a sunny day in downtown Portland with birds chirping) One of the main clues didn't make complete sense on its own merit, and seemed a bit lazily constructed. With a hint on that step, we escaped in 40 min. Add to this: a technology glitch during the room, and a missing marker which was supposed to be in our room but wasn't. Overall a pretty underwhelming experience, and I wouldn't trust their other rooms to be any better. It's a pity because the WWII air raid theme could have been really cool. A much better location in Portland is Maine Escape Games by the mall - try the Estate room. read more

The lady was extremely nice and even gave us 2 extra minutes to beat the room! We did the butchers basement, which is a two room. So much fun and the staff was so inviting. I've done many escape rooms across the country and this was definitively the worst. The lockers are a nice touch. Overall this escape room just didn't make sense. The story didn't really connect to the puzzles and it just felt like a bunch of very poorly put together locked things. Also when we bumped into a box the key to release us fell out. Yay! I'm a fan! A group consisting of myself and 9 of my friends wanted to try our luck trying to escape the room. I'm proud to say that we did in 47 or so minutes! You get 60 minutes to try to escape. Before we entered the room our friendly host told us that 20% of previous groups actually escape the room, and the record time so far was 35 minutes. I don't want to tell you about the experience actually inside the room, because I don't want to give anything away. I will tell you that we had a lot of fun and the puzzles will definitely challenge your mind. I do think the fact that we all knew each other and felt comfortable with each other really worked in our favor in escaping the room. It would have been more difficult working with strangers. My only advice for improvement would be to emphasize a theme as to why the group is trying to escape... what is the background story... why are we there in the first place... what will happen to us if we don't escape in time? etc.. The host told us that in the future they will be building another escape room right beside the current one that will be an exact replica. That way two teams can compete against one another to see who can escape first! Awesome idea! Once they change their current room around with a different "escape" I'd definitely come back! read more

We all made nervous jokes about the Escape Room being a bit like "Saw," laughing that we'd wake chained to a radiator but the truth is, none of us really knew what to expect. The owner was exceptionally inviting, bidding is upstairs to hang out while we waited for the rest of our party. He set the bar, letting us know the record times for the 30 or so groups who have tried to solve the room before us. He warned us that only about 20% of the groups actually solve the room and get out in time. I don't want to reveal too much so I won't give anything away about the experience in the room except to say that the hour flew by and that we all worked best when we worked together in small groups, dividing and conquering. My group of local couchsurfing pals and I had been trying to coordinate a date to do this since we first heard about it, so had a lot of anticipation built up around the idea. There were only eight of us that could participate, as the two other spots had already been booked by two folks who didn't show up. Jerks. The different clues were a fun team building experience and it was interesting to see how each of the methods to solve the challenges taught you something new about your friends and how their minds work! I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to trying it with strangers, but the camaraderie of friends is pretty fab. Sharing anything out about the challenges would ruin it, so I'll just say have fun! The young man running the event that night was efficient, if not enthusiastic. When we were using one of our hints, he gave us one for a puzzle we'd already solved, which threw a wrench in the works, but everyone agreed at the end that ultimately, it was a highly entertaining activity, and we want to go back next month. I agree with earlier assessments that a storyline/theme would have been a great addition, but it looks like they're remedying that, as next month is Stephen King themed according to the FB page, yeah! read more

YES PLEASE!!! When Tony? Steff? Someone else? told me about this place, I was immediately sold. I love puzzles and games and all of my Yelp friends, so I was immediately on board. This was so much fun. Its pretty straightforward. They lock you in a room, you solve numerous puzzles to open the locks on the door. You have to get out in an hour. I think its definitely better to go with a large group of your friends. I am unsure of how this would go with a room full of strangers.
