My friends and I did the drive thru safari here and WOW, what a unique experience. I honestly didn't know something like this existed in the US but I'm so glad it does. I believe there's over 500 animals here, which is insane! For the drive thru safari specifically, the animals will come to your car and you have the opportunity to get up close and personal to them. If you have food, they are very assertive in getting some and may get food and spit in your car, so be prepared for that. The animals that came up to our car included deer, ostriches, alpacas, moose, and zebras. Outside of the drive thru safari, they also have a petting zoo. They have capybaras here (which I'm a big fan of) so we also paid to see and pet them! Overall, a super fun experience if you're an animal lover. You get up close and personal with over 700 animals representing 45+ species. There are many species of deer, kangaroos, camels, llamas, emus, ostriches, antelopes, water buffalos, bison and more! We saw two new baby bison! One was born about 2 minutes before we arrived at their pasture. Another was just under a day old! You can feed the animals too. The cabins are a dated but have all the necessary amenities. Bring your own toiletries here. 1 guided tour and unlimited self drive tours are included with the stay. I'm a little iffy on this place. It was very fun, but ALL and I mean, ALL of the animals in the petting zoos look sick. The goats 100% are dealing with respiratory issues. There is no staff watching these areas so there's kids chasing the animals everywhere. There was one goat so in shock he wouldn't even get up, heavy breathing, not opening his eyes. 90% sure he was having an anxiety attack as he was SO young and moments before there was a group of about 7 kids running around the area. I think with more supervision I'd feel better about it here but I just can't believe the state that the petting zoo animals were in. So full they don't want to eat, bloated, it was very sad. We wanted to do something different for the kids and had been wanting to go here forever. Well, we finally made it! It's about an hour and 10 minutes away from Austin (and just about the same from San Antonio) and pretty easy to find. You can buy tickets online or in person - it's $20 per adult and $16 per kid (ages 12 and under) so it does add up fast. If you use a card, there's a 2.5% service charge fee. It's the same price whether you go on the guided tour or do it in your own vehicle. You also have a chance to buy a feed bucket for $8 (they recommend one bucket for 2 people and it is a hefty bucket) to feed the animals (there are 2 you cannot feed but they'll note it in the tour), but we opted out. Our youngest has food allergies and they list the ingredients online. They're pretty vague but the main ingredient is grain. The specific grain is not listed and since he's allergic to wheat, we played it safe. My other kid really wanted to feed the animals though but note that when other people feed, some will drop and you can pick those up. Also, there was a really nice grandma that shared some of her feed with our daughter so shout out to her! Her party pretty much got one bucket per person and were struggling to use them all. Even with maybe 1/4 of her bucket, we still had to go back to the petting zoo area to use up the rest. When you get there, there's ample parking and you go to the gift shop to pay. There was a baby wallaby and adult guinea pig inside along with a plethora of items. You get stamped and when we were there (around 11:30 am on a Sunday), there were about 4-5 other parties that went on the guided tour. Just picture a tractor pulling a covered trailer. They have two sizes of trailers and they make sure everyone has a spot to sit so I didn't feel like it was too crowded. We only had to wait around 25 minutes and we checked out the petting zoo while we waited. There are two sections: one for deer and the other for Pygmy goats. You're welcome to feed them as well as pet them. Once ready, everyone is called up and you board the trailer! You'll go through the entire 'park' and the different pastures and there are a lot of animals, though you'll only really see whatever comes up to the trailer, and the tour guide will be a fountain of information. If you sit up at the front, you can also ask questions! Depending on which side the animals go up to and which side you're on, you may or may not have an up close encounter with what you'd like, but I thought it was great regardless. You can walk around the trailer, though. Most of the animals will flock up to be fed and you can also pet them. I noticed that we would occasionally go off the path and go off roading searching for animals, so that is something you can't really get if you're in your own vehicle. The animal that surprised me the most was the watusi. Those horns were so THICK at the base! Also: beware when he turns his head. The funnest animal to feed was the bison, who I believe is female. Overall, a pretty unique experience! You really do get up close to the animals and my kids had a blast! Well, my 3 year old didn't really want to touch any of them and then was terrified of losing his shoes after a toddler lost his bootie (his foot kept on going through the bars) so he stayed in the middle of the trailer at the end, but he loved watching them and laughed in a crazy manner during the first half, haha. Note: If you lose something during the tour, notify the tour guide immediately and they'll send someone out to retrieve it. During our tour, we lost a bootie and an adult hat. It was hot but not too hot and they have ample restrooms and a place to wash your hands with cold water. That would be a lifesaver during the hotter months. My kids kept cool by inadvertently splashing while washing their hands. There are also some run down swings for the kids and lots of picnic tables under trees. No restaurant but they do offer snacks and ice cream. You have the option to tip your tour guide, though I didn't see the sign until I returned a feed bucket. Definitely check out this place if you're nearby! They also have cabins for 4 and 8 people that you can stay at starting at $200 a night and includes a guided tour, plus unlimited drive through and petting zoo. There's also a pool, campfire, and playground on the cabin grounds. I thought it sounded pretty neat but I they require a 2 night minimum stay on the weekends and in peak season so we couldn't do it. read more

We scheduled to stay here 3 days and soon after the deposit was made, my cc had to be replaced for fraudulent activity elsewhere. When it came time to pay in full the cc was of course declined and an employee phoned me. He wanted me to give him my new cc info over the phone. Surprised, I said 'I can't give you that over the phone. You have no other way for me to do this online?' He said no and was apparently annoyed and began to raise his voice almost yelling at me. He finally said he could cancel the reservation and I could make a new one online. I said, 'Let's do that, but know this will affect my review of your business.' He then giggled and laughed and asked why - what a buffoon! In this day and age you don't have a proper system in place for such situations makes you a poor business - not to mention this guy's ignorance and attitude towards customers! When I told the friend who was going with me about this, she said, 'Don't make a new reservation - if they treat customers this way I cannot imagine how they treat animals behind the scene.' read more

We had a great time staying at Lucy's Hideout at Exotic Resort Zoo. The cabin was clean, comfortable, and honestly had everything our family needed to settle in--plenty of space plus a well-equipped kitchen so we could cook meals and relax like we were at home. One of the best surprises was how many complimentary tractor tours we got during our stay. The kids had an absolute blast feeding the animals, and they were in heaven at the petting zoo (especially chasing the sheep and hanging out with the goats). Seeing and interacting with so many animals up close was unforgettable--camels, giraffes, capybaras, buffalo, Scottish Highland cows, llamas, and more. The Exotic Resort Zoo is located slightly north of Johnson City and offers a safari like experience. There are options to ride in their trailer or drive through in your own vehicle. When you arrive check in is located in the gift shop and runs per person not per vehicle. It was $17.95 per adult and I don't remember the kids price but it was lower. Behind the gift shops there are a few add on experiences including feed a giraffe, capybaras, and feed goats or deer. There are also clean bathrooms behind the giraffe experience area. Due to the heat I drove through in my car and it was around an hour. It was so fun! There were elk, deer, camels, mountain goats and buffalo. They give you a picture paper that tells you which animals are safe to feed with a flat palm and others best to just throw the food. The roads are well paved so you don't necessarily need an SUV or truck, but it is easier in a bigger vehicle. The whole experience was really fun and definitely worth the drive! read more

The owner has been crying about my review to Yelp over and over, begging for it to be deleted over and over. Because he has no real defense about my critique, he's been straw manning that my review is "mean" and "hateful" -- haha this is what softies in America do these days. My family and I visited this place in early Sept 2025. Like many other negative reviews state, the animals are in a sad state. They have something called the Giraffe Experience there, where you gotta pay $5 per person, they give you lettuce, and you go up on a platform to feed the giraffes. There was an employee -- I requested the Giraffe Experience from her. She condescendingly explained to us that they were out of lettuce to feed the giraffe, so we couldn't do it. I asked, "Well, can we at least go up on the platform to see the giraffe from up there?" She rudely replied "You can, but you'd still have to pay the full price of $5/person." I started to say something, but she rudely said "Think about it and let me know", turned her back to me, and walked away. How rude! I walked over to her at the front desk and asked "Well, since y'all ran out of the food, and we'd just go up to the platform to see the giraffe, could we at least get a discount?" Now here, the defensive Owner will say "It was after Labor Day weekend and we ran out of lettuce!" This is such a lame excuse. Labor Day weekend and resultant high volume demand from it is completely predictable, and the correct action by them would have been to anticipate that and stockpile lettuce accordingly. This is basic inventory mgmt that any decent business owner should know. But this guy just makes excuses. But that's fine, I get it, rinky dink business owner is an amateur and made an inventory mistake by running out of lettuce. Fine. Then take ownership of that mistake and make up for it to your customers by letting them at least go up on the platform for free. Why on earth should they still have to pay the $5 bc YOU ran out of lettuce? It is illogical. The point wasn't the money, it's the principle... despite them screwing up by not having lettuce, this employee, instead of being apologetic and trying to make it up to us somehow, was rude and dismissive. I then asked to speak to the Manager. As is unfortunately often the case, rather than let me speak to him, she went into his office (which was right there, adjacent to the front desk), and biased him to her version. The Manager told her no, and she came and smugly told me the same thing. I was of course right in the doorway, the Manager could've easily talked to me directly, but he did not. So I asked him directly this time "I understand y'all ran out of the lettuce, and that's ok, but if we only go up to the platform to see the giraffe, sans lettuce, shouldn't there be a discount on the fee?" He started giving me the standard bureaucrat-flexing-his-muscles excuses of why they couldn't do that. Again, condescending and dismissive. I told him "Ok, this is unfortunate bc until now we've had a good experience here. But now I'll have to leave a negative review." He said he was fine with that. I asked him for his name. He refused to give it to me, instead stating "You can look it up on our website." And he was lying about this btw -- his name is not on the website. If they guy is gonna take a stand, why not share his name? And this from a "Manager" who is in the customer service business, unbelievable. Again, don't expect any ownership or apology from this Owner. He's gonna leave defensive comments, and then go cry to Yelp to have it taken down, again. Look at all the other negative reviews of this place -- that tells you what you need to know. There was barely anyone here when we went -- it will likely be out of business anytime. What a gem of a place, and so close to Austin! You can drive your own vehicle and the animals absolutely RUSH to your car (probably because they know you have food). we spent a day/night during spring break 2026 best decision we could have made! We have tween a boy and a girl who can never agree on anything, how are this place was an A+ for both of them. First of all the place is spotless. It is immaculately clean even for the amount of people that are visiting they keep that place top condition which is something that I always notice right away. We did decide to stay in the cabins and that was also another excellent decision. We had a small little hiccup with check-in, but it was corrected in a matter of a few minutes the manager and staff were very accommodating and made everything right. The cabin is a perfect size. The one that we stayed in hut. It sleeps it was perfect for two and two is a fridge microwave coffee maker toaster there's a grill outside. There's a nice little bench area for sitting outside. There is a bench on the porch to sit outside. The air conditioners for the cabins are excellent we were actually cold, but it does have a little small space heater for visiting maybe during the fall or winter. cabin #2 safari hut has one of the two pools Right out side. There is a private lake And animal area that you have access to outside the cabin there's a playground there's a fire pit. A second pool!There's another little section where they have a porch with a pool table and a TV. You have access to all of this plus the other animals that are still roaming right outside the gates of the cabin area that you can see and feed. If you decide to fish you do need to bring your own poles. The animal Experience is one of a kind! We did all Of them! The did the animal Petting zoo. we fed Matrix the giraffe! The self driving tour & the tour guided one with Amanda! She was great! Tip your tour guides! We love the experience so much. Tour with a guide is a good option, because at the same time you can safely take the route and learn interesting facts. It was nice to see the animals so close, especially camels, llamas and zebras. However, some of the "exotic" seemed somewhat exaggerated. The main part of the animals on the route are different species of deer and antelope, and in the feeding area there are many goats and deer. Some visitors may lack variety. In general, the atmosphere is fun, and even those who initially felt insecure around the animals quickly relaxed and enjoyed themselves. It was a fun little safari drive-thru for such a reasonable price (18.95 plus tax)! We opted for the guided tour, which we enjoyed because they were able to drive off the beaten path for a little for a closer look at the animals. You can also drive through in your own car though to go at your own pace! We enjoyed getting to see and feed a variety of animals throughout including camels, zebras, elk/deer, sheep, bison, etc. The drive through took around an hour and we felt we had decent time at each stop to see and feed the animals! We also loved that our tour guide helped explain the history and education of the animals! What a great safari out west! We loved this one better than the one in NB! Make sure you book tickets online and get there when they open. We did the drive through as It was too cold out to do the guided tour. Since we had no cars behind us we took our time driving through and were greeted by a ploethra of animals that swarm your car! watch out for the ostrich and emus that will peck! We went today with some family in town & we had an amazing day! The staff (all of them) were so helpful, kind and we didn't feel rushed or looked after. I feel like the cost was VERY affordable. We even got 15% off from joining their email list. The feed bags were generous def not the skimpy amount you see at similar experiences. We also paid to feed the giraffe, which we've done other places but again it didn't feel rushed. My daughter asked down to the worker if she could pet him & the worker was like "if he'll let you! Go ahead!" And that was such a great experience to the kids. All of the animals were friendly & hungry we opted to do a self guided tour and you can tell my car was licked all over by the bison & long horns! Worth the $10 car wash in my future. What an amazing weekend! We stayed in a cabin and the host was really responsive when I mentioned the sink was draining super slow. Maintenance was there in 20 minutes! When the problem couldn't be resolved they upgraded us to a newer/bigger cabin which we really appreciated. We loved the pool and waterfall. My son and his best buddy swam for hours. I loved watching the kangaroos, sheep, goats, geese and deer nearby. The views were spectacular! We all got a solid nights rest as it was quiet and beds were comfortable. I even got to feed the precious deer along the fence line which was such a great experience. We will absolutely we back, we loved the self-guided tour and made lots of friends! I've been here multiple times over the yrs with my kids. I think it's a Texas Gem (in Johnson City). It's 1 hr north of San Antonio and if your looking for things to do albeit 1 hr from S.A. then it's worth it. Feeding the animals is fun but expect some dust and lotsa animal slobber. The trip is less than 1 hr. There are other drive thru zoos here and there but these guys are open almost all yr round which is convenient. They now offer drive through in your own car but on the trailer everyone can feed and pet most animals that approach. read more

The negative - they oversell the "exotic" part of the safari. It's mostly deer and antelopes on the drive, as well as goats and deer in the petting area. They do start with camels, which is unique for most people. You come by a yak or bison along the way, and some ostriches mixed in with the deer. The highlight for our group was the llamas and zebras. I drive past this place every time anytime I go see family. For 15+ years I have always wanted to stop and see what it was all about. I finally had the opportunity over the Thanksgiving holiday. When we pulled in, I'll be honest, it didn't catch my eye at first and I was a bit hesitant about whether or not we'd have a good time. Having been at the Natural Bridge Safari, my expectations were high. We walked in to a small gift shop where you would choose to either drive yourself or go on their safari! CHOOSE THE SAFARI!!! They go to place you can't with your car and ensure they find animals for you! The gentlemen was nice! If you check in on yelp, you'll get a 10% discount! We bought two $10 buckets of feed and we had 3 kids...well if you added myself and cousin it was 5 because I was like a kid feeding the animals! I think maybe 3 buckets would have been better but my daughter was VERY generous with the feed! For 5 people, 2 buckets of feed, it came out to about $90. Not too bad really. Their restrooms are clean, and they have a petting zoo as well. One side had what looked like deer, and the other goats. I do sometimes wonder if they're over fed and if that's a good thing, but they had a lot of room and places to get on top of. They also had babies which were the cutest!! You couldn't pick them and that's completely understandable. They also have lemurs and a tortoise and chickens oh my! They have a picnic area surrounded with trees and swings where kids can play. It was a great day. Now on to the safari...The driver was awesome and made the experience worth it. The animals ran after the tractor which was awesome and they actually let you pet them unlike Natural Bridge Caverns. The driver went off the beaten path to find certain animals like the bison! Had we been in our car, we wouldn't have seen them! They had so many animals and the llamas were so funny!!! They ran next to the tractor while eating out of your hand for a good while! Working out and eating at the same time, quite impressive! They also have kangaroos, but you can't interact with them! It appears as though you can stay in a cabin on the property as well. I have been dying to take my boyfriend here for a while now. I used to come here as a kid and remembered all the fun times we had. Tip: Don't wear nice clothes into the petting zoo. Maybe of the deer and goats will get close to you and get you dirty. It's also really funny to see them all follow you when you enter. I had a blast encountering all the animals in the pens, while we waited for the guided tour. I would highly recommend the guided tour because you get a more enhanced experience. We had a large group of about 18 people! It was super fun to people watch and see the kids get super excited when the animals come up close. We bought a large feeding bag and it was just enough for the two of us. The camel was one of the highlights for me along with the Buffalo! It was so awesome to see them come so close to you and be so gentle when eating. They have a lot of animals to feed and they come all around the trailer. OMG!!! This was a spur of the moment thing for us! Passed this place on my way home from and trip and had to google it. We Immediately booked a drive through safari tour and turned the car around. When we arrived the staff were incredibly friendly and feeding some Joeys in the gift shop. Check in was smooth and easy! We were even able to hold the Joeys Going through the drive through experience was one of a kind! The animals were so sweet and approachable. Truly a self guided experience like no other!! I can't stress that enough. The amount of animals and different species was astounding. The petting zoos were full and fun I would absolutely make the drive from Tyler just to take my daughter here. read more
