The nurses/assistants were very nice and they answered any questions I had. Then I met Dr. Herschel and he was very nice and understanding. He explained all that would happen, how everything works, how long recovery will be, everything. So, I agreed and start the process. In no way shape or form has it been FINE. Since the ongoing procedures At Filutowski nothing worked. I left my initial review after I got referred to Dr.Frank Barnes and that was a nightmare after the surgery he put me through and now I see a retina eye specialist in Ormond Beach who I have seen at least 6 times and we are still watching my left eye. I would not go back to Barnes and he has since left the practice. It all began with Filutowski and not only did Sebastian Filutowski threaten me over my review as to charging me with defamation of character but when I told him to check with the nurse his response was "she's not going to remember that" so hateful and I responded well I'm not lying and I'm sure it's in the notes!!!! I also keep getting messages that I need to come back in after seeing all the specialists?! Unbelievable! NO! They damaged my eyesight or Mr.Barnes wouldn't have done surgery which traumatized me. In your consultation you learn about Lasik and PRK, meet with your Optometrist to ensure Lasik or PRK is right for you, and answer any questions you may have. If you choose to proceed, map out your payment and schedule your procedure. The procedure, very mild discomfort for less then 5 mins. Whole procedure is done in like 15 mins... 15 mins to clear eyesight! When you leave you are given meds, vitamins, eye drops to aid your healing. After the procedure, go home, take a nap or lay down in a dark room (or wear shades) with music, audio book, or podcast for a few hours. Your eyes will burn and sting but it's tolerable. Everytime I went I would spend 5 to 6 hours sitting and waiting. The check in waiting room waiting room has at least 50 people waiting to check in.waited 45 mins to check in for my appointment ,,,then directed to the actual waiting room with even more people waiting. Most of the clients were very old and many had difficulty walking...there was no water or coffee..no food and we all sat and waited to be called. Once called we would see staff for 15 mins and doctor for about 5..as an example my final visit I had an 11:00 am appt and left at 3:30. This was typical of every one of my visits. The reason for long wait was management who hires and sets quota. The staff is great..but overworked...I had my surgery and follow-ups and each appt was like this. I am so happy to never return. But my concern is to have so many elderly and non English people waiting with no food or water Or any idea how long they will sit unt being seen. Guess money does rule all . My suggestion...hire more staff and schedule fewer people each day.

However, it was difficult to get the information from the facility. I did receive bits and parts through my other doctors. I had the surgery two years ago by Dr. Hunter. I had cataract surgery, then they said it would be best to upgrade to a better lense and laser. I listened, medicare with my supplement paid $6,500, then I needed to get an extra loan for $6,500. I was given Dr. Hunter as my doctor, he was very personable and sings great songs while working. However, I did not receive vision greater than legally blind with glasses after the surgery. After surgery with glasses 20/200 left eye and 20/60 both eyes together, legally blind. I went to Dr. Golen, an opthalmologist in Oviedo and he said the laser was done on top of the new lense without it adhering to the cornea, so it cannot be fixed. I just got large sclera hard contacts through Dr. Straughn from Winter Park Eye Associates who is the specialist in contact lenses. It is not covered by insurance, so the cost was $2,620. With the contacts I can see 20/30 vision, which perfect vision is considered 20/20 and anything higher than 20/40 is considered legally blind. Dr. Straughn also consulted another expert opthalmologist in Gainesville on my case. The interesting thing is why was the upgraded lense chosen and why did the lense not adhere to the cornea before the added laser surgery?

They have been very helpful with me when I was trying different contacts. I have always seen Dr. Brian Runda who is incredibly nice, professional and attentive. She kept looking at her computer confused and started saying I didn't respond to the "Texts" to confirm the appointment. I am 67 yrs old and don't like texting. I am also not in the habit of giving out my personal phone number. I did it once to a doctors office and they hammered my phone for 10 days with texts reminding me of the appointment. I now give out my work number that goes to an auto attendant. She kept belittling me about not confirming to texts, So I told her I would go elsewhere and left. Her boss and office lost business and I will never return. I have good eyeglass insurance. This experience was at the Alafaya office.

You'll see quite a few signed, athletic paraphernalia in the waiting room as the doctor has some of the Orlando Magic and other professional athletes under his care. You won't go wrong if you go to this vision center.

Is there a class action lawsuit against Magruder Eye Institute? If so, I would seriously consider…read morejoining. Their billing practices have caused me a great deal of stress and anxiety. Watch your money, people! What makes this so frustrating is that the eye surgeon is excellent, but the business side of this organization appears completely disorganized. The bookkeeping is confusing, the communication is poor, and the overall experience has been very unsettling. After surgery on my first eye, I believed everything had been settled. Then the bills started coming. I paid my balance in October. Later, I was told there were two additional bills, which I paid on January 21. Then in March 2026, I received another $60 bill (even though I have not had any services since my October 2025 appointment). That immediately raised a red flag since they could not tell me what that bill was for. No bill was on record in their billing department. According to Magruder, "All bills should be settled before the surgery." I called three different billing numbers for Magruder Eye and Lakeside Surgery, and none of them could initially locate the charge. After another call and a long wait, someone in the business office told me the $60 charge had just been added in March for a service dated September 18 of last year. She also admitted they are having bookkeeping problems. What? And that's my problem? That is very concerning. Imagine how many elderly patients they serve who may not realize they need to keep such a close eye on their bills. Before any procedures, I specifically asked about co-pays and expected charges. Something doesn't feel right about a company adding charges six months later. It's unfortunate because poor billing practices can drive patients away from what could otherwise be a very good medical practice. If anyone knows whether there is a class action lawsuit involving Magruder Eye Institute, please share the information. In the meantime, watch your bills carefully, keep records of your payments, and ask plenty of questions. Go in with your eyes open.
