What's concerning is that this only happened after I specifically asked them to review my scans again. Had I not pushed for a second review, I genuinely worry they may have proceeded with surgery despite the risks. I also requested a direct explanation from the doctor and never received one. Instead, I had to repeatedly call the office just to get basic answers and speak with someone knowledgeable. My impression is that the process felt far more focused on moving patients through surgery than on patient safety and communication. I would strongly encourage anyone considering a procedure here to ask detailed questions, seek a second opinion, and carefully review whether they are truly a good candidate before moving forward. I also felt the recovery expectations were presented in a way that understated how difficult and lengthy recovery can actually be.

Naturally, about 15 years later, I needed another correction and returned to Dr. Whitten for a consultation. During that visit, he recommended monovision, given my age at the time (late 40s). He explained that this approach would allow me to balance both near- and far-sighted vision without needing reading glasses, which many people begin using in their 50s. However, after the procedure I immediately noticed difficulty seeing clearly. Over the following year, I continued to struggle with my vision--particularly problematic in my work as a professional photographer--and sought evaluations from multiple optometrists and ophthalmologists. I then discovered that the LASIK procedure had been performed on the wrong eye. When I returned to see Dr. Whitten, I learned that neither he nor his staff had ever determined my dominant eye prior to surgery. In fact, my old patient notes from 2020 confirm that no such test was performed. Despite this, no apology was offered for the mistake. During that visit, I was seen by John Rogers, a technician and former Senior Surgical Consultant at TLC Vision. His background includes attending Computer Tech of Pittsburgh, but he has no formal education or degree in optometry or ophthalmology. He suggested inappropriate options such as cataract surgery (for which I am not a candidate) and during the same visit Dr. Whitten suggested undergoing yet another LASIK procedure (a third) to correct the issue or resorting to contact lenses--the very reason I had LASIK in the first place. This experience left me with the strong impression that the practice prioritizes business and profit over genuine patient care and vision correction. I regret not doing more thorough research before returning for a second procedure, as I have since learned of multiple malpractice lawsuits filed against Dr. Whitten, including Jamie Domeier vs. Mark Whitten, David Cantalupo vs. Mark Whitten, and Liesl Nichols vs. Mark Whitten. I also couldn't help but notice the promotional posters displayed across his offices, highlighting his LASIK surgery on Tiger Woods in 1999 as a marketing tool to brand himself as a "celebrity" doctor. Unfortunately, beyond the image, his apparent lack of attention and care for patients has led to a troubling number of lawsuits.

At that time, my mom handled most of the paperwork/scheduling etc. The surgery went well, and 10 years later I started experienced some vision changes. I recalled that there was a "Lifetime Guarantee," so recently I followed up and requested a consultation for an enhancement. My mother recently passed away, and I haven't been able to find any paperwork for my procedure (which was 15 years ago). I called the office, and they were able to find my file. They asked me how long I'd been going to the eye doctor, and I said about 5 years (since I had a baby and my vision declined). I arrived at the consultation, and it went well. Friendly office staff, etc. I was excited to find out that I was eligible for an enhancement in both eyes. As I was about to leave the appointment, they sat me down with someone to "review paperwork," which is when she informed me that since I hadn't had a full vision evaluation annually since my surgery, I wasn't eligible for the "Lifetime Guarantee" and that I would be charged $3,000 for the enhancement. I asked why it was expected to go to vision appointments annually when you have perfect vision, and she said "company policy." I understand that they are legally in the right, and I'm sure I was informed of this as a teenager; however, I feel taken advantage of. It felt like an ethically ambiguous money-grabbing situation. The surgery went well and I'm sure Dr. Whitten is very skilled; however, the follow-up experience was poor. Be cautious.

After quite a bit of research, I visited Dr. Nguyen to look into problems I was having with my…read moreeyes, which was cataracts. I've wore glasses and contacts as long as I can remember, and couldn't figure out why I was having issues all of a sudden. When I first went to My Eye Doctor to find out why my vision was blurred, they couldn't really figure it out. Thankfully Dr. Nguyen diagnosed the issue immediately. Since I'm younger (mid 40s) to have cataracts, I was certainly concerned with making the right decision to make a correction. Dr. Nguyen was extremely helpful in educating me and informing me of all my options when it comes to cataract surgery and all the different options for new lenses (IOLs). Of course I researched by reading several articles, watching videos, and reviewing tons of marketing by the different companies. I probably wasted a lot of time with all of that as ultimately, I found that I just needed to put my trust in Dr. Nguyen. She is up to date with all the new technologies, and is certainly well respected in the ophthalmology community. I really appreciate all the time she spent with me making sure I understood all of the benefits, side effects, and costs of all the different options when it comes to cataract surgery. Eventually, I opted to have a multi-focal lens implanted so that I wouldn't be dependent on wearing glasses as it helps you with seeing at a distance, intermediate, and reading. I didn't like the idea of seeing halos at night when driving, but Dr. Nguyen explained how there is no perfect lens, that will compare to the capabilities of our natural lenses. I struggled with making the decision, but know that she helped me make the best decision. I had my first surgery on my right eye at the end of 2020, and then a second surgery on my left eye in April of 2022 (after the cataract in my left eye eventually progressed). Everyone at her office was also VERY HELPFUL and kind with scheduling and answering all my questions, especially Nikki! Shortly after the first surgery I probably overreacted to some normal side effects, and thought maybe I had a retina detachment after watching You-Tube videos about it. She came in to her office on her day off, and had a retina specialist also come in to make sure I was ok. They were able to put my concerns at east and confirm I was ok. I really appreciated that. Even though cataract surgery is very common, I was still nervous about it. Both surgeries was well, and I was pleased to hear Dr. Nguyen say it was "text book" right after she finished. In talking with one of the nurses as I was wheeled out to our car, she commented on how if she were to pick an eye surgeon she would definitely work with Dr. Nguyen; and she sees all the local doctors there at the surgical center. That just helped reaffirm I had made the right decision. Now I can see great out of both eyes and no longer need to wear contacts or glasses, which is awesome!

Several years ago, after going through the evaluation process for refractive surgery, I chose PRK…read moreover LASIK because I wanted to avoid the long-term risk of a LASIK flap becoming displaced. Looking back, I was not adequately informed about one of the most significant limitations of excimer laser vision correction, and I deeply regret not pursuing legal action at the time. The excimer laser typically creates a fully corrected optical zone of around 6.5 mm, with the surrounding tissue blended into the untreated cornea using what is commonly referred to as a "blend zone." The purpose of this transition is to reduce the sharp boundary between treated and untreated tissue. However, the blend zone is not fully corrected tissue. If your pupils dilate beyond the effective optical zone in dim lighting, as mine do, you have an increased risk of experiencing starbursts, halos, glare, and light streaking at night. The blend zone did not prevent those symptoms. Despite being characterized as an unlikely outcome during the consent process, I have lived with those symptoms ever since. I also experienced a complication after surgery when the protective bandage contact lens placed over my cornea slipped. The vision in my right eye became noticeably hazy, and the pain was unlike anything I had experienced before, which makes sense given that the cornea is the most densely innervated tissue in the human body. When I raised concerns with Dr. Anh Nguyen, they were simply dismissed. I was told there was no visible scarring despite the persistent haze I was experiencing, and that response never aligned with my own experience or subsequent vision. The potential for persistent nighttime visual disturbances is disclosed in the consent waiver you sign before surgery. They were presented as remote possibilities rather than meaningful tradeoffs that many patients should seriously consider. The paperwork acknowledged them, but the overall impression I walked away with was that they were exceedingly rare and unlikely to occur. By contrast, the therapeutic bandage contact lens--or the possibility of it slipping and causing lasting visual consequences--was never referenced or explained to me in any way. Meaningful informed consent requires patients to fully understand the realistic possibility of permanent nighttime vision changes and other complications before deciding to undergo an elective procedure. Whether the manner in which these risks were presented was the result of negligence, an overly optimistic view of the procedure, or a desire to encourage patients to proceed, I cannot say. What I do know is that the potential consequences I ultimately experienced were not communicated to me in a way that allowed me to make a truly informed decision.

I had horrible, horrible eyesight & if you're telling yourself you do too, wait till you hear my old prescription. 'cause I had to live over 10+ years with this degree listening to people with -1 or even -.5 tell me how bad their vision was. cue rolling eyes. I was a -11 & -12 in my left & right eye respectively. Now you can gasp & go, "holy sh*t". that's right. I was pretty much blind. If I didn't have glasses or contacts in, my whole world was one giant blurry mess. I couldn't make out distinctive items & I sure as hell couldn't identify a human being from one another. Funny enough, I never looked into laser eye surgery because I didn't know if I qualified. I originally went to TLC laser eye surgery (where they wasted my time and told me I would not qualify for laser eye surgery due to my high degree). So, I had to call around & actually ask clinics if they took in high degree patients. Spoiler alert, a lot of places do not due to the high risk factor involved with taking in high degree patients. You basically burn off a lot of your eye tissue to even get you to a better degree. Now I wasn't expecting anything wild, but anything is better than what I was at. I finally called Liberty Laser Eye Center after reading a review about how this one patient with a high degree was able to get to -.75 after her surgery. She was just about the same degree set as me & was going on over a few years after surgery. Naturally, I had to call them & make sure they still took in patients with my degree. Dr. Tanchel was so ready to work with me & to see what she could do for me. She never pressured me, but gave me a ton of information on the procedure itself. Spoiler alert - I went through with it. I could only qualify for PRK - which is the original laser eye surgery before LASIK came out. PRK is the procedure where they scrub the top layer of your eye ball & then shoot a laser into your eye. I will say during my procedure, I was pretty nervous. She put in numbing eye drops in my eyes & I had to wait a few minutes for it to set. Weirdest feeling to have your eyes numbed. I had my right eye done first & then my left. The system started recalibrating before they began on my left eye. Omgosh. So, so turns out the numbing drops don't last a long time. After the system recalibrated, they pulled me back into the room. I felt her scrub my eye ball, whooo, weirdest feeling ever. She thankfully put in extra drops in my eye & I felt so much more relief. Each eye took about a minute to complete & each time it just felt like I was looking into a red dot. Afterwards, I left a little blind. I could see right after for a split second before my vision went blurry. I ended up sleeping in my closet for a whole week & that was nice. I was constantly tired & sleeping. If I was sleeping, I was putting in my medicated eye drops & regular eye drops to keep my eyes hydrated ('cause I just had them burned off by a laser.). It's been over six years, and to say I am happy is understated. I am beyond thrilled that I can see. I am ecstatic that I can wake up in the middle night without being blind to my surroundings. I no longer need glasses/contacts to be able to see. y'all I can drive without any corrective lenses. it's amazing! highly recommend you contact Dr. Tanchel for an appointment.

The procedure itself was fast and smooth. Dr. Rivers has such a calming presence he talked me through every step, making sure I was comfortable and fear-free. There's even a waiting area where your family or friends can watch the procedure if they'd like, which I thought was a cool touch. I noticed a difference in my vision immediately after the procedure -- I could read the time on the digital clock in the wall right away! By the next day, my vision was perfectly clear. They sent me home with everything I needed: eyedrops for moisture, antibiotic drops, sunglasses, coupons!!! and clear instructions for aftercare. I experienced only minimal discomfort in the days following. The office is beautiful!!! It's modern, great views, clean, and spacious, with plenty of comfortable seating.
