Would give zero stars if I could. This place is a total scam. So many complaints about the hidden $40 fee they charge on top of insurance, and when I asked about it the "manager" DAJA came at me aggressively and humiliating me in front of the entire lobby. I asked to talk to someone else, she refused. I told them nobody went over additional fees on top of copays with us, and instead of trying to de-escalate, she said I was on camera video AND audio and they can listen to the tapes and prove "ANGELLY" went over the fees with me and my daughter. COMPLETE LIES! I saw Angelly and asked to talk to her, and then I got screamed at again by DAJA in front of the entire lobby when I was calmly asking Angelly why said she went over fees with us when she didn't; and Angelly said she didn't know what I was talking about! I told DAJA she was violating HIPAA yelling at me like that in front of everyone, and she yelled louder saying she wasn't saying my patient information so there wasn't a violation. WHAT?! So it's ok to talk to customers like that, to PEOPLE like that? Completely classless. Clearly this DAJA thinks she's the boss and lies to patients to prove some kind of point; it's a total power trip. At one point she even berated the staff and said "1 plus 1 is what?" why is she allowed to talk to her staff like that in front of patients?! This girl is clearly in need of some education. And side note, I'm sure the reply to my review from this place will be something awesome like we were never seen in their office, or some nonsense. Perhaps it's this manager Daja replying to the reviews, so these complaints never get to the people that could really fix the problems? Welp, it's on you to discuss with the Better Business Bureau because they've been notified of your fraud scheme! And someone needs to educate that girl DAJA, because if I had to bet I'd say she's the common denominator in MANY of these awful online complaints your establishment is getting. STOP SCAMMING CUSTOMERS, MAKE IT CLEAR THE ADVANCE EYE EXAM ISN'T AN OPTIONAL ADDITIONAL FEE, TEACH DAJA HOW TO BE A BETTER PERSON, AND DO BETTER AS A BUSINESS! I emailed The Eye Place the following review (below). One would think if they truly valued their patient's patronage and the satisfaction of their patients/customers that they would try and rectify the situation, or at the very least offer up an apology. That didn't happen. Mind you, I have never been rude to any of the staff. In response to my email, I got a rather snarky letter that was as dismissive as my last encounter with them, they more or less had a "I don't give a crap attitude", closed my portal account, sent me my records and without actually saying it, said "kiss our ass". I have no doubt I've made the right decision to go elsewhere. I suggest that you do too, if you're considering this practice. Review: I was planning on writing a review, but there's no where to do that on your site so I'll just have to send this message for now. When I picked up my glasses they needed adjustments, numerous adjustments, to sit straight and be properly aligned with my face. So many adjustments. After about an hour I walked out of there feeling dismissed, a hindrance and unsatisfied with the whole process. Treated like "oh well, I don't know what else to do" because he couldn't see it or know what to do to fix it therefore just stared blankly at me (which blew my mind because people in your optical department, especially the head of it, are professionals in the field and I'm not). I felt like I just had no choice but to accept it so I left. Now my glasses sit so high that if I look straight ahead while I'm walking, I'm damn near looking through the bottom third of my trifocal, which technically is what I'm supposed to be looking through to read. I had put on my drugstore readers to clean my glasses with a mild soap and water like I do occasionally and while drying them with the cloth provided in the case, I noticed that there's what I can only say looks like two different chips or manufacturing flaws, along the edge of one of the lenses. Of course you can't see it when they're on and if you have bad eyesight when they're off and you don't have additional glasses to wear when inspecting them which I didn't when I went to go pick them up. I'm not sure anyone else will notice, I didn't notice because my eyesight is so bad, but that's not the point. The point is, I'm sure that someone in your optical department saw it and did nothing, they just passed them on to me, I guess hoping I wouldn't notice I assume. Lastly, I'm still having issues reading, almost as if I'm still straining my eyesight to read. I find that my forehead is wrinkled as one does to squint to read. And of course, the last thing I want to do is go back there and have anything redone because they may come back in worse shape than they are now. So I should just accept paying big money for poor quality glasses because I have zero confidence that they will be fixed to my standards and to YOUR previous standards over the years that I've been going. To say that I'm a dissatisfied Customer is an understatement. I have been going there for every two years or so and this is my third pair of glasses. So there are several issues and it's all left a bad taste in my mouth. I most likely will be going elsewhere in the future as will my husband and I can't see me recommending your practice, in good conscience any longer. I hope that in the future, you do not treat other patients this way and you fully inspect all of your lenses and frames that are going out before presenting them to the patient/customer. read more

I paid the balance online. Then I sent in medical release forms so we could change to another doctor. They required $20 each for my husband & I for the forms. I've never had to pay a legitimate physician for this service. Now, today I received the forms in the mail with a handwritten note threatening to add more charges and to send account to collections. I was just in to have an exam and they wanted to charge me $40 (not covered by insurance) for retinal photos. I do not have any medical problems. They would not see me unless I paid out of pocket for a test I did not need nor want This is very illegal I left and will not go back to them. As patients we have the right to refuse a test. It's hard to make an appointment online even thought they suggest it and when you call you get voice mail that hangs up on you. When I went into the office to make an appointment the office manager was so rude just saying hello like I was disturbing her, I'll never step foot in there again. Please note : "The Eye Place" has changed it's policy for patients to have the option to waive the extra fee for a detailed photo of: "the inside of your eye and test side vision to better detect glaucoma, diabetes, and macular degeneration. Your doctor will review new images each year. The fee for this is $40." Don't get me wrong, I'm sure this is a good preventative test to have but In the past, this has been an optional service that the patient could waive. Hands down the worst customer service experience I have ever received. Tried three times to get glasses but failed. Blamed was placed on the customer (me) for being to particular about what I wanted. Second set of glasses actually made me nauseous and gave me double vision. Initially refused to refund me then said they would have to speak to the owners. Finally I was told that we could end the relationship but it would take 3-5 days for a refund. Before I left, I was told that my tone of voice was not appreciated and that I made threatening remarks to the office manager. What an absolute joke. I always have a great experience at The Eye Place. I've been going here for most of the time I've lived in Richmond and just had an annual eye exam for the first time since moving back to RVA from London. They are taking covid very seriously and there are a number of precautions in place that made me feel very safe and comfortable during my visit. Everyone is super friendly from the greeter at the door to my technician Kelsey and Dr. Norma Spittle. Dr. Spittle listened to my concerns and helped me find a solution to my dry eye issues and I appreciate the time she took to explain everything she was doing so I knew what was going on. I'm happy to report that my eyes are in great shape and I will keep coming back to The Eye Place to keep them that way. I am always pleased with my experience at The Eye Place. I had an appointment today, and Briannah was my technician. She was very friendly and helpful, and made the whole process very pleasant. I see Dr. Bowman, and I really like her. She is very professional, but she also listens, and I appreciate this very much. I have monovision and an astigmatism in one eye. This has presented a problem in the past, but I was relieved when I got to The Eye Place. Dr. Bowman worked with me until we got the prescription and the fit just right. I feel like I get great care here, and I recommend it to anyone looking for an optometrist. Once my appointment was over, I was helped by Yoni for ordering my contacts, and this was very easy, and she gave me paperwork for a rebate on my contacts. Love it! The annual eye examinations I receive are the most comprehensive I have ever received; I have worn glasses for over 70 years. The staffers are very professional, customer-focused and highly competent in the performance of their duties. I met with Sophia yesterday and, as usual, the testing was completed competently and very thoroughly. Dr.Kyte continues to be my physician, and, he too, is consistently very professional and routinely answers all of my questions and gives me a thorough explanation of the results of my eye testing. I remain assured that he truly cares for his patients and his demeanor demonstrates this. I will continue to be a patient for as long as I live in Virginia! read more

Another reason why I will never go back to The Eye Place on Huguenot road! They are soo rude! Weem before last got a postcard reminding my mom of her upcoking appointmenr. I called and got their voicemail so i left the following message: 'Hi, this is ___________, I am the daughter of _______________. We received an appointment reminder postcard for my mom for April 20 something - it got wet so can't read the full date. Anyway, Mom passed away on Sunday so please cancel her appointment. If you have any questions you can call me at ________.' A few hours later, I get a call from this rude young lady. Said she got my message and needed to know why we were cancelling _________'s appointment. I said because she passed away. She said why? I said bc she is dead! (A bit louder and very irritated - almost yelled it at her!). She responded, oh the message made it sound like her mother passed away! ‍. Yeah pretty sure the message did not make it sound that way - problem is your listening skills are lacking! She the saId ok it has been cancelled -bye. And hung up. Don't waste your money. Last year my husband purchased three designer pairs of glasses from them. It took weeks and they finally told him that their lens machine needed servicing. Six weeks later he received his glasses and every pair of lenses chipped within 6 months of purchase. He also had them put regular glass in a pair of expensive frames he had bought there the year before. They charged him $45 for that service. Now they want him to come back and buy more. NO THANKS. Do not go to this store!!! I have been trying to get my glasses straight for months. I have been wearing glasses for 20 years. I have never had a problem with eye exams or the lenses. The reason I went was they had a frame that I wanted. However I get a headache after a few hours and something remains distorted in the lens. I have been in that store addressing this issue at least 6 times. I have contacted my insurance company with a complaint. When I asked for a refund on the lens only Lucy called me back (three days later) and jerked me around for 30 mins. I am happy to keep the frame and go to Virginia Eye to have them make the lenses where I have always had good success. Its been 7 days since I contacted them. I guess I am out $300.00 for the lenses. read more

This group of eye specialists are extremely tech savvy! The latest in technology in diagnostics can be found at this practice. They have the latest styles in eye wear, although a little pricey if you don't have insurance that subsidizes the costs. They do carry some lower costs eyewear. 8/21/2019 -- The Eye Place has yet to contact me despite repeated requests. It is clear from Yelp reviews (where The Eye Place has 3 stars) that many people have had serious trouble getting in touch with this provider. To be clear, I received great care from The Eye Place (previous review was 5 stars). My issue was that I could not get in touch with them over the phone or through the website and they threatened to charge me for missing an appointment. I tried for 12 days to contact them by phone and to reset my online password. Their system is broken. My 2 star update was to get the providers attention. My wife is a nurse and it is often the case the providers are unaware of issues patients face with the front office. They needed to know that a patient was having trouble reaching them. What is mind boggling is that this organization retaliated against my wife by terminating her as a patient. Others need to know that this is how the office manager operates. I have no idea if the owners are aware or if they care because no one will reach out to me. I received the following explanation from Lucy "Hi Mr. Nickens, I do understand the concern and I am disappointed and sorry this has happened. There is a universal expectation that doctors are able to provide unbiased care. When there is a reasonable expectation that future care may be compromised, even in the slightest, this unfortunate process kicks in. There are excellent alternatives nearby and we sincerely hope they can better meet your expectations." And my response "Please have one of the owners call me at XXX-XXX-XXXX. This excuse is one of the most absurd things I have ever heard. My wife is an oncology nurse with 15 years experience. They have patients question the quality of care from doctors and nurses on a regular basis. They have never engaged in this "unfortunate process". I questioned your office hours and communication process (telephone and website that was not working), not the quality of care. Additionally, my wife is a private individual that has her own opinions. This retaliation against her for my review is ridiculous. There is a reasonable solution that involves getting off email and talking person to person, which I would greatly appreciate." Keep in mind, I am not questioning their ability to provide quality eye care. I gave them 5 stars for that. It is unfortunate that The Eye Place cannot handle criticism of how the office communicates with patients. As a "customer" they should care that after 12 days of repeated phone calls and problems with the portal that they wouldn't reach out in a more positive way. Based on Google reviews (most of which are 5 star), they clearly have plenty patients. Just be aware that this is how they treat a patient for attempting to get their attention through a review since their own systems were not working. ------------------------UPDATE------------------------ 7/29/2019 -- I had a great experience last year, but now that I am trying to reschedule an appointment I cannot get anyone on the phone, I cannot reset my password to their online portal, and understand that I will be "charged a nominal fee" for not notifying them. Well, I am trying to notify them but they are impossible to get on the phone. Additionally, they have no non-business hours that would allow people with jobs to get eye care. They used to have Saturday hours, which is about the only time I can go. They no longer have those hours. (Update-I was incorrect. They have never had Saturday hours and have appointments as early as 7:30am. My bad and hope it did not confuse anyone.) read more

Myself, and my 3 children, have been patients of this practice for over 4 years. Scheduling appointments is easy, and there's always reminders for upcoming appointments. The optometry side is nice and modern. Check ins are smooth and quick. Exams are very thorough and have never had an experience with not being heard, or questions not being answered appropriately. We all see Dr. Bowman, and love her. She's great for myself and for my 3 kids. I've had to send many emails/calls regarding prescriptions, and Esther, is always so kind, and quick to return emails and phone calls if something can't be found. Their patient portal is easy to access and great for keeping our information in a central location. The reason for 4 stars, is that checking out can be difficult. After the exam, we have to wait to checkout in the same area that eye glasses are sold. We seldom have a need for glasses, or contacts. I"d prefer if we could just checkout at a central location away from the business/selling side of the office. read more

Many times, we have come in and not had a clue what we needed in terms of eyewear or contacts, and they've been extraordinarily patient and kind when helping us find what we need. I went for a general eye exam and the whole appointment took about 2 hours. I waited for so long, was ushered right into the sales area and pressured to buy lenses, and my doctor somehow seemed angry at me for not doing well on my vision test? I have been wearing glasses for years and years, of course I'm not going to pass the vision test. Don't go unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket, and time to spare. read more

I have been going to the Eye Place for 10 years. My Doctor retired last year and i was shocked at the lack of concern and poor customer service that I received on my last visit 10/21/22. My appointment was scheduled for 2:15 on Friday, all of the employee's were less than friendly. At 3:30 I was finally taken to an exam room where an employee cleaned the equipment and performed a few tests ,(she was very nice) when she Told me that the Dr. would be right in , I asked her " now that you have completed all of these tests, what does the doctor do?" we both laughed. The doctor arrived had me read a chart twice, with one change in lens...excused himself came back with two pair of contacts. I tried the first pair and everything was blurry, the second pair was not comfortable but clear to read. I was told to wear them for the week-end then call if there was an issue. There was no dilation and he spent less than 10 minutes with me. I was then taken back to the fiiting area for glasses. I wanted my current frames used and told this was a $40 upcharge adding to the total bill of $1192. I was in shock but signed the paperwork.It was 4:05 when I left. The new contacts helped me read but all distance was blurry. I went back to the Eye Place at 9AM, waited until they opened at 10AM. I asked for the person in charge and the Administrator came to the desk to talk to me. I informed her that I wanted to cancel the entire order as the contacts were not working for me and that the glasses were too expensive ( Saturday I competitively shopped two of the Medicare recommended lens retailers and the price for the exact lens was less than half what i was being charged.) She informed me all sales were final. I asked to speak to her superior and she offered me the name of the lead doctor but told he would call me. no-one ever contacted me and i am not sure at this time where my order stands. I did get a renew of my old contact prescription before I left. THey are loosing all of my family's business (6) as they are rude and don't care about their patents anymore. read more

I wish I could give this place a -10 for their lack of customer service and rudeness to clients. I have used them since we moved here 4 years ago and now they won't even talk to you on the phone. Everything has to be done through a "portal" and if you are a walk-in you are treated like garbage by the very rude staff. This is only with regard to glasses, not eye exams, as the docs there are very good. I was actually told that they "only give out masks to people with appointments.". I don't live in town, was just visiting family and wanted the pro tell help me pick out my new specs. Patti Stone does a terrific job - I've followed Patti to this location because she's super (and not in a stalker kind of follow, I swear). She's not just looking at the size and shape of your face, but listens to what you like/hate about your current glasses. I was told on 2 separate occasions by 3 different employees, that 'The Eye Place' offered walk in appointments from 2-4 daily. Imagine my surprise today, after the greeter confirmed once again that they offer walk in appointments from 2-4 and told me to have a seat, I was approached by a very rude staff member that stated they have never had walk in times and were unable to see me. I strongly suggest you train your employees correctly. ** In response to the business owners reply: Your rude associate asked me who provided me with that information. I attempted to describe him to her. My apologies for not knowing his exact nationality. The fact you chose to state that in your response is quite disturbing. You are correct. I was not able to make my Monday appointment and instead came in for the walk in hours - information provided by YOUR employees - on Wednesday. At no time was I told those appointments were for emergency patients. Thank you for your rude response. Very friendly staff and appreciate their follow up call to my son to check on how he likes his glasses. However, I felt my exam was rushed, the guy practically told me I had vision issues cuz I was getting older (I've had glasses since I was in high so sooooo?). Got my prescription and it was lower than what I had before so miraculously my vision got better in the past two years? Picked up my new glasses yesterday (purchased somewhere else) and things are still blurry so I'll be calling to have them redo my test. And on a side NOTE- whoever you are, Brian S., responding to everyone's complaints on here, why so rude? Had one if not two of the best customer service experiences ever with "The Eye Place". I made an online appointment with details of what I was experiencing on Sunday. The first available appointment was Wednesday which I booked. I received a text from Dr. Spittle Sunday evening saying he could see me first thing Monday morning due to his concern with my issue. Dr. Spittle spent a lot of time determining my condition and encouraged me to get blood work done via my primary care physician. My follow up was with Dr. Kyte and he was already up to speed and showed the same concerns. Both Doctors have been in contact with me randomly via text asking how my eye is doing. Just waiting for lab results to return so everyone can figure out our next steps. Even with this being a serious issue they have made me feel confident I'm in great hands with both Doctors. read more

Overall, staff were professional and kind. The optometrist at Eye Place prescribed a very high prescription for my toddler. The prescription prescribed was 10X higher than my own adult personal prescription for hyperopia. I pursued second opinions from pediatric ophthalmologist specialists. I am frustrated with The Eye Place because they never recommended to me see a pediatric specialist ophthalmologist with such an extreme prescription of +5.25 sphere. I showed the accurate prescription (from the specialists) to the supervisor at The Eye Place. I had one encounter with a condescending physician. This physician spoke medical jargon and wrote numbers of a paper. My impression was that the physician was trying to undermine the mistakes his staff made by behaving superior than other and he exhibited this through his rudeness. Please don't diagnosis toddlers Eye Place! No offense, but your professionals do not know what they are doing in regards to children. read more

The reason we give The Eye Place five stars is because the staff is amazing! Brianna Johnson & Kelli was so friendly, patient and kind. The entire staff always greet you with kind words and a smile. We love Dr. Spittle, he has a great sense of humor and always pleasant. They never rush you through your visit and they really work with you. Dr. Spittle as well as the staff really take their time explaining each procedure that is being performed. Our family has been clients years. We trust their expertise & highly recommend. Called back to exam room at 1105. Very friendly and professional. Did a great job! Exam rooms were nice. Assistant seemed very good. Glasses way over priced!! Service was nice and friendly but I don't understand why they can't be more competitive. It doesn't have to be the cheapest, but it doesn't have to be double the price either. I will continue to go for my annual exams, I like my dr and the staff, but my husband and I decided today we will no longer be buying any products from here. Go to pick up prescription sunglasses today (more of a want for eye fatigue than an actual necessity for correction) and there is a HUGE banner stating half price sunglasses on Friday-- THREE days away. We mention it when we go in and the front desk staff say "mention when you get over there". We mention it and he says "sorry nothing we can do". Mind you my husband also got necessary reading glasses that same day. Grand total for exams and both sets of glasses was over $550 and there "is nothing we can do". It's not a week or a month before the sale-- THREE DAYS. Fine-- do nothing, we will NOT be purchasing anything from here again. At 1st I wasn't to sure about this place though I've been here to get my youngest son's glasses because I feel that the 1st person who helped me was patronizing me in a way. After having such a bad day, it actually pushed me to tears, but I decided to stuck it out and I'm glad I did! The gentleman who ended up helping me was an absolute sweetheart! Don O'Brien is his name. Ask for him if you can! He was extremely helpful and patient considering I had my sleepy aka irritable and super busybody 4 year old little son with me who was asking all sorts of questions and being a typical sleepy 4 year old. Don thanked us for our patience and said when he saw that we weren't sitting in the waiting chairs closest to the glasses he thought we left, when really we just went to the little area with the Thomas the Train set for my little guy to have some fun while we wait. He was AMAZING! A+++++++ for Don!!! They have a really sweet receptionist there too who was very kind and genuine in her interactions with my little guy. I wish I got her name. The sweet lady with the glasses at the front desk who made a point to wave bye bye to my little man. After we left my son started to make a frowny sad face and said that he was sad he had to leave the nice man! Can't get a better stamp of approval than that. My son has never reacted that way of all the places we've taken him to. That speaks volumes. We will be back to get my son's new pair of glasses in about a month or so just before school. DO NOT BE FOOLED!!! Beware if you do not have insurance! My insurance does not cover eye appointments so I carefully called around to local optometrists to compare prices for a contact fitting. As a previous pt of The Eye Place I was happy to find that the receptionist stated that it would be $86 for my contact fitting. Great! Made my appointment, had an appointment where the doc only wrote me for a script for 1 yr....thanks a lot....then I go to check out. My bill is a whopping $350!!!! I couldn't believe my eyes! I explained to them what I was told on the phone. They even were able to verify who I spoke to and nothing was done. So I have to shell out $350 and then they give me the evil eye because I won't buy my contacts that very day from them!!!! I was treated terribly! Fast forward to a month ago. I am going out of town the next morning and I am waiting for my contacts from an online company that won't make it in time. I have debris stuck on one of my contacts on my last sets so I call The Eye Place and they keep passing me off to different people. Then tell me that they cannot even give me a trial pair because I did not originally purchase my contacts from them. They patronize me multiple times and tell me "maybe if you had purchased with us we could help." There was no compassion or anything. I would hope that my optometrist could help me...nope... They clearly don't "care" about their patients! NEVER AGAIN!!!!! read more

I don't trust The Eye Place Optometry! Poor customer service. Told me one thing then a bill showed up several weeks later. I feel they only care about billing not service. Extremely poor communication. Took my business to another small local doctor that forces on the patient no just billing fees. read more

Very pleased with my experience with Dr. Brian Spittle. He knows so much and does a great job explaining things.

The eye place is AWESOME. Hi-tech, knowledgeable staff, and great selection of glasses. The entire process took just 1 hour. I got a new prescription and a new pair of really nice glasses. Jaret, Dr. Bowman, and Louis were so efficient and professional. Highly recommend this place! read more
