The F train was the last leg of my journey going to the Yelp experience at Royce Chocolate. It was also the first part of my journey returning home. Reason being is that I used Google assistance for traveling. It would have been easier to catch the F train at 179th and Hillside Ave for convenience. The F train offered a quick transit to and from destination while providing entertainment below ground. I was one of several people who did give a tip to the dancers. There's also elevator service for those who don't ambulate well and for the handicapped and elderly. This was a very pleasurable trip that will forever encourage me to take the train and not consider driving or taking a Uber or catching a Lyft Bravo MTA, you did a fine job with the F train even though there were slight delays. F train... you are f-ing good (sorry couldn't resist). Whenever I stay the night at my folks place in Queens and need to head into the city the next day, I take the F train. From Fresh Meadows, it's the closest and quickest way to get there, whether I'm going uptown, midtown, or even by the lower east side. I've usually caught it from 77th ave & union turnpike or 71st and continental, however this past Wednesday, I boarded from Hillside Ave and 179th st. Even though it was about three extra stop then I've grown accustomed to, it was still a breeze to get into the city. What was special about this recent voyage was the mariachi band that joined. I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea to hear random and loud live music playing so early in the day but I personally appreciate a little flair to my mornings. I always tip those guys because 1) They're good! 2) They bring some light mood and sunshine to the dim subways and 3) Carrying those instruments around all day is impressive! When I carry mine with me, it's on my back in a case and even that gets bothersome after a while.. F Train. You've been good to me over the years. I don't use this line too often. It runs from Queens thru Manhattan and then back through Brooklyn. I haven't ridden it end to end since I was a kid but it's a pretty long ride still I'm sure. It runs through the West Side in Manhattan. As far as on time and how long the waits are, it's generally been ok for me when I have used this line. It was been during the day and during the week so not sure about the off hours. That usually when services starts to get spotty. The trains themselves are not the new new ones but aren't the old ones either. They don't have the stops listed and the announcements are hit or miss depending on the conductor and/or the train car you're in. read more

F train you were my primary train for several years in my adult life of past times. Occassionally, in recently times, I take the F train to work which usually gets diverted on the A line between Jay Street Borough Hall in Brooklyn to West 4th Street in Manhattan. This train has numerous problems during renovation times especially on weekends. F train you're either a hit or miss thing. I have to wait thirty forsaken minutes for you to arrive at Jay Street Borough Hall to get into Manhattan after departing from my connecting A train. At times you're not efficient. This line is, indeed, loaded with daily entertainment of all genres from teenage boys' amateur "showtime" acrobats, teenage boys selling candy at $1.00; elderly mentally unstable preaching the Bible; panhandlers cursing passengers if you don't donate a penny; to middle age men selling AA batteries at $1.00, and to Asian men and women selling knock-off copies of DVD's. read more

Poor grades might not be entirely the fault of the MTA (money taking agency) as with todays review. The exploding numbers of the homeless people heading subterranian into the NYC subway system to avoid the cold temps of winter are staggering. I see them on most every platform and unfortunately on the trains as well. The F apparently is a favorite as the grey convex seats run the distance of three men lying head to foot. Typically quick into Manhattan, when the winds right its as quick as fifteen minutes. I have a heart for the less fortunate, unless they are belligerent, racist and verbally abusive, such was my last 2 rides out of 3 on tbe 'F'. What can I say about NYC trains? They are efficient during rush hours. F train is always a packed train versus the E Train. There are times when I feel like a sardine and I get a terrified look that I have to get on an F train. LOL. I usually wait for the next F train and they come frequently. One thing about subway riders no matter how cramped for space, everyone some how gets by and people accept the closeness of other riders. That is Urban Living for you in the Big Apple and space is limited. Yet, everyone gets along. A smile, an excuse me, makes the day go by faster. See so many tourist with maps and figuring out the subway system. Tips E- Train will take you along 8th Avenue in Manhattan-Last stop Chambers Street (WTC) M and F- Train will take you along 6th Avenue in Manhattan- then goes into Brooklyn 42nd Street Bryant Park Station is not Times Square (7 minute walk to Time Square if you get off and wonder where it is). read more

I love that its express (except for that one time I was really hammered and wished the train could fly to Queens...) and usually gets me home in under an hour. Compared to the E train, it feels like a shorter ride once we get to Queens. I appreciate it... I had to take a star off because the F train doesnt fly. It really should though. I frequent Supreme Queens court house, which is located one block from the Suthphin Blvd F train stop. I always have my headphones on... Which serve their purpose and drown out sound around, but often times, it has a negative aspect.... I can't hear the arriving train or one already in the station. Over the past month, this has happened to me three times, and all three times the conductor was nice enough to open the door so I could get in. Today, the conductor opened up for a lady and I arrived five seconds later and he still allowed me to get on. Unfortunately, I don't see this same treatment in my borough of Brooklyn. Why is the F train called the "F" train, is something you may have wondered. But if you've wondered this, you have not taken the F train during rush hour, on the weekend, or late at night. Because if you have taken the F train during rush hour, on the weekend, or late at night you'll have said various F-words in your head countless times, wishing you could scream them out loud every so often. Years ago I had the displeasure of riding the F from 71st and Continental to Jay St during early morning rush hour every day. It'd be heavily packed when it arrived that not everyone was able to get on. Usually you wouldn't be able to get to get a seat until Rockefeller Center. It'd also stop, usually on a slant or weird angle, somewhere between 71st and Roosevelt, or not to long after passing Roosevelt, due to "train traffic" or some other bull they'll never really explain to us. Really sucks to be standing on a slanted train with broken intercoms for 10-20 minutes at a time. I know they've added a lot of newer trains now, not sure how much better they are during rush hour (I have my doubts), but they are missing the only comfort I had on the F train, the nice corner seats, you only had to sit next to one other person and could lean against the wall. They were great. As for other hell rides on this train, during the weekend they often take long time to come (but it's usually not too bad) and sometimes go local in Queens which is truely hell. During the late night hours, service is the absolute worst, and the train usually gets stuck multiple times. If you can take the LIRR, you're far better off doing so. read more

Since moving to Queens 16 years ago, I'm dependent on the bus and F to get into Manhattan and it's a love/hate relationship. On weekday mornings, I can still get a seat and nap all the way to midtown, but if you try to get on at Roosevelt Ave, learn to be a sardine. On the weekends, it's really hit or miss, because if you miss your connection, you're going to hit your head on the steel support column multiple times because you'll be waiting a while. Also, since the F is one of the longest lines in the city (1.5 hour ride from Jamaica to Coney Island, according to the MTA Trip Planner), the homeless love to ride it. Are you ready to play "WHAT'S...THAT...SMELL?" or maybe "Hey Brother, Got Any Spare Change?" If I'm going to pay $2.50 a ride after the rate hike, I'd better get service on the level of the Washington DC Metro. read more

The F train is the inconsistent second-longest line in the subway system. I live in Queens and I primarily use the E train, though I occasionally use the F. The F train is generally cleaner than the E (though 169 Street and Sutphin Blvd could use some soap and water). It has a weird circuitous route where it runs along the 63rd Street corridor while bypassing stops like Court Square, Lexington/ 53rd, and 5th Avenue. Prior to 2001, it ran along the E line and made those stops. The F train tends to bunch up, particularly in the evening rush hour heading towards Queens. There's usually a long wait, then a packed F train. A minute later, an empty F train enters the station. The F uses mostly new trains (R160's). It occassionally uses the larger, older trains (R46's). I actually prefer the older trains since they have more seats. In addition, the orange seats are more pleasing to the eyes than the sterile interiors of the newer trains. In addition to Queens and Midtown, the F serves the Village, the Lower East Side, the eastern part of Chinatown, and Brooklyn. I rarely take the F into Brooklyn. I once made the mistake of taking the F to Coney Island. It made a million stops in Brooklyn. Way back in the day (before I was born), it used to run express in Brooklyn, but for whatever reason, it doesn't do that anymore. On weekends, they do construction in Queens, which means that the F runs local, which is pure torture. The only good thing is that the F doesn't have those idiot performers like the E train. A lot of attractive women ride the F, especially around the Village and Park Slope. Overall, however, the F is inconsistent and slow. read more

I have nothing personal with the F-line, but like in school, the "F" could stand for: failure. In my case, and the case of my 2 other friends, Mark and Louis, who were leaving NY to go home to San Francisco and needed to......get to the airport... the "F" stood for many things: Chapter 1: F-riendly: My good friend Louis and I both merely had carry-on luggage. I woke up at 6am to run Central Park and after returning, showering, and packing up, and by 8:30, we were packed and ready to leave. Just a short walk to Lexington Staton and back to Jet Train to JFK Airport, right? Our plane was scheduled to leave at 10:30 and everything seemed in order. Our other buddy Mark was a little more conservative. He booked an 11am United flight instead. Besides, he had United miles. He wanted to save a few bucks and better early than cutting it too close. As we checked out of the Helmsley, I noticed that there were many Lexington Subway stations and suddenly could not recall which line to Queens would take me to Jamaica Station to get us on the Jet Train. My battered subway map only had part of queens and manhattan. We knew we had to walk up 3rd Avenue one way or another. We actually all had full subway maps but no one volunteered to bring one out so I offerred to get a map from the bell person. But I was lazy. I instead asked the concierge for subway advice: "to get to JFK, you need to take the F-train. Go to "xxxx" station just a three blocks west." "Ok, thanks..." I half listened to him and deduced that the F train probably stops at Lexington Station and from there, we would be on our way..." So I led my friends and said, "well guys, not a problem the concierge told me that we need the F-train. Let's just walk up third avenue until we find the station that has the F-line..." My friends looked like zombies and blindly agreed with me. Chapter 2-F-earful I had a bad feeling about the F-line but I didn't listen to my instincts. My battered subway map didn't help either. I kept looking at the map. It appeared that on 3rd Avenue, we'd have to walk all the way to 62nd Street to take the F. "But wasn't it 52nd St???" On the map, there were many "Lexington St" Subway Stations and in my morning torpor became confused and stubbornly subscribed to the notion that to get to the airport, I needed to take the F Train. As we got to 52nd St Station at 3rd Ave, it read "E, J, and Z lines." My friends, who were acting on my info "rightfully" proclaimed, "nope, this isn't the line, the F doesn't go thru here." I had a very bad feeling and announced to my friends. Actually, the F line is at Lexington Ave Station at 62nd St. "Let's keep going. Chapter 3: F-reshness My fears and worries subsided when we arrived at 63rd/Lexington Station. The F train to Queens just arrived. "Perfect timing!" we all thought in unison. It was now 9am. An hour and 30 minutes to departure. We were cutting it close but all was saved. The train was zooming thru Queens and it was headed to Jamaica Station! We were happy. Chapter 4: F-labbergasted When we arrived at Jamaica Station. We walked fast, like all New Yorkers, to the Jet Train at Jamaica Station to get to JFK Airport. Suddenly, the jet station seemed to have disappeared!!! Where's the jet station???? This is Jamaica Station right???? WRONG! We were at Jamaica Station at 179th Street. We should taken the E, J, or Z lines that branch off 4 stops earlier to the OTHER Jamaica Station at Parson's Archer. Our friend Mark, who wasn't too worried because he had the 11am flight, calmly suggested, "no problem, let's just cut our losses, pay an extra $1.50 and take the F back four stations to Van Wyck Blvd. and then get on the E, J, or Z. Chapter 5: F-rantic It was now 9:50am and we were getting desperate. Of course we didn't print our on-line boarding passes so Louis and I were both getting jittery and were thinking of alternative plans. After waiting an eternity. No return F train arrived. It was packed at the end of the line. We opted to try and flag a cab. I used my "Yelp-mobile" to flag a cab. Yay YELP! Right? Wrong? 179th Street was a cemetery where cabs seemed to have been buried. For 15 minutes we saw no cabs. It was getting really desperate now for Mark who had the 11am flight. Louis and I accepted defeat and that the we would not be able to make our flight on time. In desperation, I saw what looked like a cab. But not a yellow cab. I asked the driver to take us to the airport. He was a Jamaican man who couldn't speak much English? "You want airport? I dayke yoo day-r, no problem...waht temminahl????" Chapter 6: Finale Mark just made it on time. Louis and I stayed until the 4:45pm return flight to SF. Remember: to get to JFK Airport: take the E, J, or W lines!!!! Yes the F line experience was heart attack inducing. But in retrospect, it was a "F"-unny story. read more

A few years back when I discovered it crashed (worst crash in over a decade for the mta subway system,) on the Friday I came into the city, I was forced to take the 7 local to Bryant Park and then a real clusterf*** of other public transportation. But come Monday morning, it was back running Express to get me from Brooklyn back on to LaGuardia for a 9 am flight in about 45 min. Even though I have no reason to ride the F train, at 3:30 AM on a Sunday morning that's really a Saturday night, I found myself at its mercy. Despite owning the sort of navigation technology that Lewis and Clark would consider witchcraft, I managed to walk in the complete opposite direction of my original destination and ended up at East Broadway Station, a station in an area so desolated I was beginning to worry that the Rapture had occured and everyone won except me. Once inside, I was relieved to find another sinner. It was a buskar that, I kid you not, was scratching off dissonant notes on the violin. It was a cheeky, but respectable endeavor to be up at this time for the sole purpose of adding a creepy soundtrack for the few drunk and lost souls that wandered into this limbo waiting forever for the F train. It was a truly surreal experience waiting at the near empty track listening to these eerie screeches. It felt like I was a main character three-quarters the way through a Haruki Murakami story and I'm just waiting for a cat to show up out of nowhere to start a confusing and banal conversation with me about the benefits of flossing. For 16 years of my life I was bound to the F Train. It took me good places. It took me bad places. I took it in Middle School even though my mom told me never to take the train and to restrict myself to the B67. I was sneaky. The F, would take me past "Burglar Street", as I liked to call it, into Manhattan for whichever weekend adventures my Dad would take us on. It would sometimes take me to High School in Midwood, Brooklyn. It would take me to the 10th Street Tea Lounge, where I'd hang with my girls. I'm in your corner F-train! True, your weekend service changes are particularly rough for me being that I between the East Broadway and Essex St stations, but for the most part you're just fine. You've got those new trains now to compliment the '70's orange and red-seated wood paneled throwbacks and I enjoy both. You know what used to suck? The damn V-train. That bitch would tease me all the time from midtown, saying things like "C'mon inside, don't you see all the available seats? I'll take you home!", and then BAM! it stopped at 2nd Avenue and refused to go further. Now at least the M replacement will creak and groan it's way over to Essex which still gets me home. Still, the fact that I can roll out of my house on a day off and take the F to Coney Island makes me happy (unless I wake up there by accident after a prodigious night out). Dear F Train, I want to love you very badly. I have been loyal to you through all 3 of my moves in this here city. 2nd Ave was fun that one summer. I loved knowing when I entered the station I'd be greeted with the festering smell of piss in a sauna like environment. Especially since I'd be covered in sweat myself from the bike ride to 2nd Avenue from Avenue C. Even to this day, whenever you stop there, I can't escape the stench that I once associated with My Subway Station. Church Ave was a hard time for me. That apartment was terrible with my insane roommate and all of the drama she instilled in our house. Riding you was a pleasure, a getaway, an assurance I was going somewhere better than home (unless of course I was -coming- home, thats a different story.) I thank you for that. I also appreciated the guaranteed seat living that far down the line gave me. An added bonus to an otherwise bad situation. Now at 15th Street, I appreciate the multiple entrances you have. However, I've noticed your partnership with the G train may be straining our relationship. I feel as though G may move slower than you and hinders our union. Is it true? Is that why things have changed between us? Does this explain why I stand on the platform waiting for you impatiently many days a week?
