I was really surprised to see how many semi-positive to positive reviews the F- train had. I guess these people must not be riding the train that has signal delays every other day, causing me to be late to work. Maybe the F that these riders are writing about doesn't blast the AC in the winter. Maybe they don't have to take it from 179th street into the city so they don't experience the torture in the morning of having two trains ready to go, with no idea which is leaving next. Maybe they've never seen a conductor get on one of the trains, only to sprint to the other train a split second before closing the doors, causing the entire station to yell in fury. Perhaps they've never been told one train is leaving, only to have the opposite train leave. Maybe they've never had to take the train home on the weekends when it runs local through Queens - making the commute twice as long. They may also be lucky enough to not have to get out at Lexington and 63rd, easily the worst station on the entire line. They've probably never had anyone laugh in their face when they mention they live off the F train. I guess if you've never experienced any of these things then the F train is a pretty darn enjoyable train to ride every day! read more

I have a lot and hate relationship with F train. I believe one can trust the reliabillity of this train during peak rush hours but it sometimes become a pain during the weelend. I love this train because of it's express service and works well when I am in a hurry to come back home. read more

Huh? Yes, another "huh?" from me. Why? I grew up on the F and G line. In fact, in the neighborhood I grew up in and still reside in today, you can find many lines such as the 2 3 4 5 A C F and G train and now, thanks to Jay St. Metrotech, the R. I am severely pissed that at one F train stop, I am routinely having to re add money to my card because the dirty machine at 23rd street keeps eating up my money. This is not a once every six months thing, this is a once every week, maybe twice a week thing. MTA, can you please get it right? I work in Manhattan and go to school there. The closest trains are the 1 at 28th, F at 23rd and A/C at 23rd or even the N or R. I am so fed up with the F train at 23rd street routinely taking my money and since there's no token booth clerk (conveniently), I can not tell them to let me throgh. The MTA is full of bloodsuckers and I am going to stop using the F train at 23rd street because I am not Donald Trump with butt loads of cash to donate to the MTA. read more

I like you F train. Why, because you take me from my cool little Soho hotel right smack into Dumbo and other cool parts of Brooklyn for just a few bucks on my Metro card. I do have one gripe though and that's your weekend re-routing schedule. I tried to take you back from the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival and apparently you were closed between such and such street and some other street and you became the G which took me to the A and then to the F. Ummm, more confusing? Absolute garbage, and has been for as long as I can remember. I was born and raised on the F, and I am unfortunately now stuck back with it again. I was lucky enough to catch a two year reprieve living on the Q line. Actually, maybe that was a bad thing--it made me realize just what bunk the F train is. And it's only getting worse. 30 minute wait for a train DURING RUSH HOUR? Check. Crowds increasing daily due to a combination of bad service and increasing population? Check. Mass rush hour pile-on/pile-off of yuppie goofballs at 7th Ave in Park Slope? Check. (who the hell goes to work wearing khakis and sandals anyway?) Drag-ass-slowness between stops, and constant stalls/delays? Check. Yes, the F train is as bunk as it gets, but hey, that's never an excuse for the MTA not to raise the fare one more time. On one hand, I usually take the MTA for what it is and on another, I've always had a special place in my heart to hate this train to hell. And then today happened. I thought my usual train's service change were bad. This was the most fucked up service change I've ever seen. Coming from the Q, I had to switch over to the F because I needed Avenue U and in theory, it was SUPPOSED to be faster than taking the B3 from Ave U on the Q. So first I'm on the Q toward Coney. I get off and switch at the Aquarium for the manhattan bound F platform. Now there's two signs for the same exact day and time. One says about the train running in sections, the other saying the manhattan bound trains are on the coney side. WTF? It just didn't register that two different directioned trains are running on ONE track, leaving the other completely empty. So why did I still wait on the Manhattan bound side for the train? Literally everyone was waiting here for it and almost no one was on the other side so I figured it was a case of the notice being disregarded. That and no one ever bothered to block off the platform. The Coney train came first so I figured OK, fine. Lo and Behold it comes right back out of Coney as a Manhattan bound train on the Coney platform...an EMPTY platform and the motorman's waving at us as the train's leaving. It's now 20 minutes spent in this station. We all switch over to the Coney Island bound platform to wait for a Manhattan bound train but then the Coney train comes.... I take it which I know it's going to round back out to the same damn station. It's now 35 minutes in. I finally see the Neptune Avenue stop. Holy mother of hell I'm 2 stops awa--ATTENTION ALLL PASSENGERS THE LAST STOP ON THIS TRAIN IS AVENUE X. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Actually I came close to kicking in the door. One stop.....ONE fucking stop. You know when I saw that notice at west 8th, I assumed whenever a train is in sections, it's one side. They only seemed to mention Stillwell on the notice. Nope. This train...this MANHATTAN BOUND train landed in Ave. X's Coney Island platform and they kicked everyone off so people can take the train on the Manhattan bound side but then that train waiting WENT BACK INTO GOD DAMN CONEY ISLAND. Luckily for me, Avenue U wasn't far and I just walked it. Total time to get to Avenue U: 1 hour. Time it should have: 20 minutes. I will never complain about my own train ever ever again. Sucks for people who regularly use this line. And the funny thing of all this? Where's all the work supposedly going on? The only person on the tracks I saw looked like the motorman and even HE looked like he lost his train. read more

Where do I begin? Endless delays, sparse trains even in rush hour (compared to others like the E), and utterly unreliable during off peak hours. One benefit--if you catch a seat, you can enjoy a good long nap. That is, if the train does not go out of service, change from an express to a local, or decide to make a detour to the G line. It is so bad at times that you are likely to travel to Queens quicker by taking the 7 express, followed by a bus. That's pretty sad. If the F were personified, I would hope to see it hanged, drawn, and quartered. Then each of the four limbs would be positioned at the highest points in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Roosevelt Island, and Queens. An awful monstrosity. read more

The F train constantly F's me. When I have to go to Queens, it's running local and not express. When I have to go downtown, it automatically detours me to the ACE line track (with NO announcement, by the way) When I am on my way to a business meeting uptown and am waiting for the M train, it is almost a guarantee that the F will come fourteen times when I don't need it. I thought F train ran pretty well before I needed to use it and i would say it's okay and when it's bad it's BAD, F stands for f'd up. when there's a sick passenger or signal problem (god knows if it's true), it moved 4 stops in 40 minutes and it didn't even reach Forest Hills yet. It's packed most of the time...and it's the only train i got to see healthy men don't give up their seats for elderly...when there's a problem, it's brutal to take this train. i don't get why can't the F run express on the local line during their maintenance weekends. and it runs so smooth in the city and drag outside of manhattan. it's like once you leave manhanttan your time is no longer meaningful. read more

Why am I reviewing a train line? Who knows. Anyway... I frequently take the F train from Herald Square/Bryant Park to Queens (and vice versa), and holy moly does this train SUCK. There are delays way too often... like WAY too often. I remember once, for almost FOUR days in a row, the train got stuck for 45 minutes + in the same spot. I was coming back from work, thankfully, but if I were going to work... I hate the F train, but it's honestly better than the E train. read more

I've been riding this line my entire life. It has been a lifetime of disappointment to be sure. The F train stops for no reason, idles in stations for two minutes a piece and then suddenly skips stops. Why? I personally love the F train, I just don't love it when it's local. Everything takes forever! UGH! It's a pretty clean train for the most part. I usually always get a seat because I take it from 179th Street. The local train gets you every where so quickly. It's a pretty popular train so you'll always have connections to numerous amounts of train. There needs to be come maps, because tourists love this train and do get lost a lot. The digital stops on the new trains are heaven sent and I love them. Very clean train! Doesn't smell at all. This train makes all popular stops and gets extremely packed during rush hour both in the morning and night and that's it. read more

I have a love-hate relationship with the F. I grew very fond and attached to the F when I first moved to Forest Hills and loved how quickly it got me everywhere. However, the line has been screwing me over multiple times as of late, though. I've had some of my worst rides in the past few months. For one example, I had a really bad night after the opening of Hot Tub Time Machine. I get on a train at 11:55 PM. I didn't get home until 2 in the morning. Someone pulled the emergency break in the middle of two stations due to a sick passenger, causing the train to be stuck for nearly an hour. We were all forced to abandon the train at 21st Street-Queensbridge. Another F didn't get to the station for a half hour. Of course, it ran local right after, while we were squished like boobs in a push-up bra. Worst night EVER. read more

Three stars because by default it's my solo choice to get into Manhattan (i.e. serves my neighborhood), and at least half the time it get's me there in reasonable time. Zero stars - for all the times it has done so in the most excruciating, slow and completely unpredictable manner - AND in either an over-heated or over-airconditioned train car - which is (also unpredictable, and definitely not weather appropriate). The More Reliable Version of the E Train There is a mix of old trains and new trains running regularly (mostly new), but I personally prefer the older model since the seating arrangement is slightly more comfortable and adaptable. There are occasional delays, but nothing significant in comparison to the E train. Performers tend to avoid it as well since the crowds in the F train (specifically during rush hour) are significantly (25%ish) less than the E train. Don't underestimate the F trains ability for transfers. If you are heading downtown (let's say from Queens) you can go from 71sts and Continental to West 4th Street arriving before the E-Train, even if the E train left the station before the F train did. Then you can transfer to whichever train you wish, ahead of schedule. On a side note, the F train does tend to smell better than the E. On another side note, yes I really hate the E train. read more

I call the F train, "Bizarro Train" for a couple of reasons: 1. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to when the F train starts, stops, stalls, or skips stations. 2. The F train features an assortment of central casting types normally found only in crappy jokes ("So an Orthodox Jew, a gang-banger, and a homeless man with a tin-foil triangle on his head walk on to the F train...) 3. The F train stations are both cavernous and overheated. 4. The F train knows when you're running late for the most important event of your life and says "fuck you." 5. No matter the time of day or night, the F train is always packed and at least one person reasons that your head/arm/shoulder/coat is a suitable substitute for the pole he/she can't reach. 6. Worst train I've experienced. Always crowded, always delayed, and very inconsistent. It randomly changes to express train and lets you know very last minute. I've been having to get off and back on nearly every day, hoping the next train will be local. F train really needs to have some sign or advanced notice that they will be express train. It is EXTREMELY inconvenient to have to do this every single day, having to basically fight multiple times to get on this always crowded train per day. Often not clean and tends to have a lot of homeless on the train. Understand sometimes, especially when cold or very hot, homeless people need a place to stay and that's ok but I've experienced couple times having 5-6 homeless people in one car before. Overall always a bad experience on this train and I'd avoid the F if I could. read more

It took me to school faster than the V or R, and it goes all the way to Coney Island, making convenient stops along the way at pretty much all the major hubs and city areas. The infrastructure is collapsing as evidenced by the unbelievably awful service of the F. It is hit or miss with getting to work on time. I've waited 30 minutes for an F train on the weekend. Usually it's a convoluted mess with the F running on the A or D lines. A few weeks ago I had a huge rat under my seat. I'm waiting for my Canadian citizenship application to be processed and then I'm hauling my ass out of this exorbitantly expensive third world city. read more

I was stuck forever at the dismal 2nd Avenue station waiting for the Failure train to show up. I noticed that on both the uptown and downtown sides, this train came very infrequently. I think that in between stops it pauses in a dark tunnel somewhere to smoke crack with the C train. read more

I don't understand all the hate for the F train. Sure it re-routes to the 'A' line every so often or stops running at Jay Street, but overall it seems very consistent. The trains run constantly in the morning (in Brooklyn at least), they have A/C in the summer, they're clean, and they conveniently run right up the center of Manhattan. I took away one star for having to share a track with the M train, which no one ever seems to get onto or off of. read more

The F train is god-awful. I have often thought of moving solely to avoid being completely reliant on this completely unreliable train (my only other option is the G. Don't get me started...). Ever since I moved to Brooklyn 6 years ago, the F train has gotten progressively worse. It used to actually show up...although still with a wait. When it did, it was usually one of the newer trains with digital display, a smoother ride, and doors that typically work. This made the fact that the train was filled beyond capacity at all times more bearable. Fast forward (something the F knows nothing about) to 2014: the F line has abandoned the new trains, which are no longer even new, in favor of the oldest, most dilapidated death traps it could find. Perhaps, this was F's attempt at bringing logic to its chronic untimeliness. "We can blame it on the shitty trains!" I have the misfortune of being the F's first underground stop after it has been above-ground for a while, which means if it is drizzling outside or more than two gusts of wind blow consecutively, there will be train trouble. But, it is not like you will ever know if the train is delayed or if it has shut down completely when you are at the Carroll Street station, where clearly nobody works. The same thing is true of the erratic weekend schedule, as mentioned by the other reviewer. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to when they shut down, nor is there any notification. A general rule of thumb with the F train: assume it's not coming. read more

The F train has been quite nice to me during my 2 year stint in Brooklyn. Normally the trains are newer and they come frequently enough. I normally take this line between Park Slope and midtown, and I finally stopped by Roosevelt Island for the first time a couple of months ago. I also like how it stops in Lower East Side, where I can easily visit the trendiest bars and restaurants! One of the perks of this train is the view when you leave the Carroll St station and pass the Smith St and 4th Ave/9th St stops. Sick views of Brooklyn and the city. Although it's a very long subway line, at least the service is better and more consistent than the dreaded R train. read more

You make me wait an eternity at 5:30 am for a train to GCT, by myself, in sweltering heat, with only the Rats of Nimh to keep me company on the bench I am sitting on. You inevitably have some service issue or another, forcing me to get off at Bway-Lafayette and do some weird dance around the station, or worse yet, the neighborhood, trying to find my destination. Ever since moving to Brooklyn, the F train has been my only possible mode of transport. That and the G, but we all know that the G doesn't actually count as a train. After taking the 7 train for 3 years, anything is an improvement. Seriously...anything. But this train is SO CROWDED. Deep down, I want to hate the F train. All the hours of my life wasted - spent sitting on a non-moving train or waiting endlessly at a station. Sometimes I've even walked onto cars on the F train that smelled so foul I thought I may puke. But, I think the reason I have so much angst for the F train is because I've ridden it so much. I think if I rode the 6 train all the time, I'd have similar complaints. I think all subway riders have issues with their line. In defense of the F train, you gotta give it up for a train that stops at both 23rd and 6th as well as East Broadway. In Manhattan, nothing beats the ability to go diagonal, and any train that can get me from the west side to east side relatively easily gets some points in my book. Even though it is very efficient, the NYC subway service really could use some improvement. Weekend service is often a nightmare and service on weekdays can often be spotty. I'll give the F train 3 stars, which I think is the most I could give any line. 3 stars for being able to get me where I need to go for $2, but also 3 stars for often making that trip a little painful. read more

F stands for fubar! The F train is late for no reason. The F train goes express for no reason and I have to either get off 5 stops before I should and get on another train or go one stop past it. The trains are foul. There is always tons of trash on the floor and they all smell. The stations on F in Brooklyn are mostly shady (there are a couple of exceptions) The F train is terribly packed most of the times I have been on it except on the weekends and late at night (after 10). The drivers are crazy. Sometimes I feel like I am going to hurtle to a sure death in a tunnel. But, I am forced to ride it because it's my only option in the part of Brooklyn I live in. Five things about the F train: 1. You will observe at least four F trains going to Coney Island before a train arrives on the manhattan bound track. 2. I once sat perched atop smith-9th st for 25 min. approximately 20 feet from the platform. Why? I don't know. And then returned maybe an hour later to sit for the fall off 25 minute wait for an F train to take me back. 3. The 63rd St and Rooseveldt island stops are located in the center of the earth. You must reach these via a series of broken escalators. 4. The York st. stop is in the east river. You travel three miles of hallways and staircases to the street. And it's still not that convenient. 5. This train's efficiency is in direct relation to how late you are running. read more
