Talk about being transported back in time! I've always driven right past this place thinking that they just offer top quality tomatoes, but it's actually so much more than that. They have more than tomatoes, they've got other fresh produce, and fresh food - a full kitchen, actually. Serving up soups and sandwiches and walls and walls of candy if you have a sweet tooth. The area in the back for food was actually quite busy (it was lunch time on a Saturday), so I decided on just getting some sauces and fresh produce for home. I literally spent a good half hour going through every nook and cranny of this place. It truly transported me to another decade. Thankfully, I live pretty close. On a whim we stoped in to see what they had and were surprised by the various items - fruits and veggies for sure but also hot sauces, salsas, root beers and a salad bar! There's a sign in the salad bar area that tells customers a) The Famous Tomato has the freshest and cleanest salad bar in Indy, and b) please don't touch the salad bar, and also wait behind this line so someone can help you create your salad. I guess this is how they maintain a salad bar that's so fresh and so clean. (No Outkast.) You animals used your grubby, bare hands one too many times to reach for the croutons, and now look what you did. Now we have to talk to someone if we want a salad, and point at what we want like a child. It's all your fault! Actually, it's probably for the best because the salad bar did look delectable and immaculate. So many fresh a clean vegetables! They also have an area with soup and chili, which the staff will also help you with. There are some tables in the salad bar area, so you can sit and eat your food inside the shop. Mostly, though, The Famous Tomato is a specialty food store. Lots of old fashioned candy, hot sauce and barbecue sauce, novelty sodas, so many different flavors of Moon Pies, and random things like salted peanuts in the shell. It's also a little farmers market, so you'll find lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. The Famous Tomato feels like a hidden gem, even though it's right there in plain sight in Speedway. For some reason, I would pass by it and I thought it was a Fazoli's? It's most certainly not, though. Long review. Many photos. Hopefully you'll appreciate my review. The Famous Tomato is definitely a cool place. It was totally on a whim while driving by that we stopped to grab some tomatoes for my father-in-law. Upon arrival, they had many racks of in-season produce neatly setting outside and under a nicely shaded awning. I took a peak inside with the idea I might use their restroom...if they even had one. As soon as you open the front door, The Famous Tomato whole different world inside of totally unexpected walls of candy apples, zillions of zany bottled beverages, off the wall seasonings and other fun stuff. After roaming around for about 10 minutes, I started inspecting a pretty fresh looking salad bar. As I was walking around the bar, a lady (worker) came up and asked if I needed help. I told her I was thinking about dishing up a salad. Ends up the ladies come out and pull items from the salad bar and make your salad for you. I've never had this type of experience but it works. They were super friendly and helpful to make a delicious salad (pay by the ounce) as well as serve some really, really hearty soups. It ends up we were the first ones the salad bar. As rookies, we were kinda slow twitch on everything but the ladies were fun to help. By the time we got our food and sat down, there was a pretty decent line of people from all walks of life--Military people, workers from nearby industries, etc were lined up ready to feast on soup and/or salad. Remember at the beginning of this review that we stopped to get tomatoes and gently walked inside to see if they had a restroom? My son and I LOVE glass bottled drinks... that's our thing (don't judge us, the flavor and quality for us hits different than plastic ‍). #IYKYK Anywho, my business coach suggested we check out this staple that's been in Indianapolis for a long time. My son was in beverage heaven. They have drinks that take you back to your childhood and new items that we'd never seen before. We were in heaven! This spot also has a fresh produce, condiments, candy, soup and salad bar, etc but we were only there for crafted sodas. The staff helped us out a lot and there was one bottle my son was looking for and they went in their stockroom and found it! Overall, we had a blast finding and trying new sodas. One here for lunch with my girlfriend the inside of the store is very unique, with lots of sauces, sodas, and candies. I got the salad buffet, and essentially had a Caesar salad salad. I finally made it here for my first time and I wish I'd been there earlier because I wanna try out their soup bar and their salad bar. The store was packed with produce and other products and it was a very quaint little shop the customer service and the help taking things to my car was awesome. The best part was also at the register. I found out that they sold Palmer twin bings which are made in my hometown of Sioux City, Iowa and you can't usually get out this way. We saw their sign has the Famous Chili is back in stock so we decided to try it. This place was so cute with a Vintage decor, stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables and tons of sauces from Salsa to Cherry pie filling. The salad bar looked great and the selections of soup looked great as well. I got the Chili and Broccoli Cheddar and both were delicious and I'm pretty picky about my soup! Former roadside vegatable stand converted into a charming sweet shop, with a cool dining area in back for their world famous Chili! They have a "Wall of Soda" with all the favorite soda pops from the past, from Grape Nehi to my new favorite, Apple Pie Frost! Many other favorites from the past, Stuckey Carmel Nut log, Cinnamon black Licorice, and Chili spike Molasses! There is also a large salad bar if you are trying to not go scorched earth on calories. What a precious fruit stand type place located near Indy. They have a soup and salad bar and the white chicken chili was tasty. The store itself is nostalgia for the past, old style candy, caramel apples, sauces etc. such a fun place to find unique gifts for the older population and introduce the youngins to a different way of life. If you do order the soup/salad bar, they have to come out and fill it for you. Some of it is pay for by pound or ounce and some of just "16oz soup" price. The store was clean, the staff friendly. If I lived here I would visit often to ensure they stay open. My only wish was for them to have the ingredients of the caramel on their apples. After a visit to my doctor, I decided to stop inside and see what this little place was...it's a mix of: Salad bar, old timey candies, farmer's stand, farmer's market, hot sauce/pickled foods/root beers from around the world. The salad bar (and soup) is a sight to see: you stand in line and wait for a staff member to walk you around the bar with (I kid you not) nearly 40+ salad toppings!!! Famous Tomato is one of my favorite spots to shop year round, even shop for Christmas trees. They typically close after Christmas until spring. The salad bar is fresh and well-stocked with a nice variety of salad ingredients, and you pay by the pound. I've had some expensive salad, but I love to add all types of ingredients. I love buying fresh salads, wonderful chili or soups, hot salsas, seasonings, persimmon pulp (behind checkout counter in fridge), and old timey sodas throughout the season's. Spring through fall when fresh produce is arriving, I come for tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, zucchini, and cantelopes, to name a few things. Spring is great for buying hanging baskets, and fall is terrific for pumpkins, gourds, and carmel apples. Saturday, I picked up some great looking apples that were fresh and crisp along with a few Carmel apples with nuts and a few Carmel apples topped with candy. I had one last night, and it was delicious with a sweet crisp apple. We actually shop here more often in the cooler months for the various soups and salads to go with baked potatoes or to extend meals. We like to experiment with seasonings during the grilling season. Various salsas and hot sauces are fun to try during Taco nights. Don't forget bales of straw, pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks, and all the individual pieces of candy and taffy for Trick-or-treaters bags. When you're on the westside of Indy close to 10th and 465, just go east on 10th Street for a short drive to Famous Tomato. read more

Finally! I've driven by here plenty of times and thought to myself, "one day, I'll finally make the time and check this cute farm stand out." Half the fun is that it's located just a stone's throw from Speedway's Main Street and not too far from downtown Indy either. This past weekend we stopped in and picked up some green tomatoes (for frying, of course). The produce prices are just a wee higher than what you'd find at most farmers markets. A few fun things that stood out to me- they carry quite a few local items, for example Broad Ripple Potato CIOs and Triple XXX root beer, for example. Speaking of artisan sodas, they have dozens upon dozens of options! You'll also find a large selection of candies, pickled veggies and jams and jellies. I always love the farm fresh salad bar but I had not been in the area since Covid until this day in April of 2024. The place still has restrictions everywhere as if someone didn't hear the plandemic ended. I do not need nor want someone fixing my salad for me. I had to stand so far behind the white rope that I could not see what was in the half empty bowls near the middle. And don't ask if they have an ingredient you can't see. You will get a frown and a rude response. If you are still into 2020 treatment for a salad bar you will love it here. If you have wondered what resides inside this wonderful store or ever wondered why the parking lot has so many cars in it then I am about to let you in on the secret. Today I decided to explore the store! As soon as I entered, I was delighted with what I saw. Fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, nostalgic candy, huge selections of soda, hot sauces, salsas, condiments, Fresh salad bar, soup bar and selections galore loaded from the floor to the roof! I never knew they had a soup and salad bar or else I would have been coming here long before today. The soup bar had multiple selections of chili along with soup today and i believe the selections change. For now, the salad bar is not self-serve, but the attendant will prepare it for you as you make your selections. I believe there is also other food selections to choose from as well. This is a super fun little spot in Speedway for fresh produce, salsas, pickles, seasoning, a wall of hot sauces, and a funky collection of sodas and candy. There is also a salad bar which is roped off right now and a sign asking to get help from an employee for the salad bar. A six pack of soda is going to cost you more than a six pack of beer but you can't find these sodas just anywhere. There is no longer at this time inside seating but they do have outside seating. I didn't find any baskets either to carry my goods or I probably would have bought more. A great place to find a gift for your hot sauce loving friends or a foodie friend. read more
