We rented snowshoes from here for a day hike we had planned. I called before we got into town to see about conditions and the gal on the phone was super helpful. Once we got to town we headed to the shop to rent a pair for our adventure the next day, this was about mid-afternoon when we got to the store. I appreciate that the sales person was honest and didn't up charge us by letting us rent the shoes then instead of offering us to come back closer to the close of the store and we'd only be charged for the day we intended the rental but we'd have for our early morning hike the next day. I think the manager or the woman with the short brown hair ( bob) needs to take an attitude adjustment /101 customer service course. Not so much the answers but how it was said . I inquired if they had Patagonia and she said "no", I asked if she knew of other stores that had it and same answer, "no" which I knew was not true. All she had to do was at least try or say the reason they didn't carry Patagonia. She also didn't come to the fitting room to see if I needed other sizes or ring me up. Again it wasn't so much what she said but how she acted. A smile or even acting like you're interested can go along way for great customer service. read more

We've been biking/camping a lot more lately and needed to look at some bike gear/camp gear. I'm biking for a cycle challenge that raises money for kid's cancer research and have slowly been buying better stuff every time I do longer rides. I saw that they had some cycling shoes and jerseys on sale and was sooo tempted to buy it but haven't researched it enough to justify it:/ We did end up getting a northface tent piece to hold items in our tent, a patch to remember this place and matching hats lol The service was really friendly and they had a wide selection to choose from. I'm a looooong time local customer, have been coming here since the mid-90s. I've personally known many former employees, and have made some pretty large purchases over the years. I'm a big fan of keeping $$$ local. I recently dropped off my bicycle (that I bought from Fifth Season ten years ago!) for some maintenance on a busy Saturday, after calling first. The person on the phone was polite and professional, and told me it was okay to drop it off, and pick it up the following Monday. Perfect! I came in on the Lake Street side with my bike. I didn't want to block customer access, so I took the bike over to the bike repair desk, and asked the woman (who seemed to be in charge) if it was okay to leave it there. I was abruptly informed that she was currently helping someone else, which was true. I was just looking for an "okay"... not to be embarrassed in front of a bunch of people! But I ate a little crow, and patiently waited for her to finish. After about ten minutes she came over to me, clearly expecting that I was going to be a pain (I am totally not ; ). I informed her that I just wanted to drop off my bike, and she quickly turned her back on me to get the form. Then she came out with it, and tersely asked me the pertinent questions. It was apparent she wanted to get rid of me as quickly as possible, and I was happy to comply with her wish. I simply chalked up the rude behavior as a by product of a busy day... On Monday at noon I went to pick up the bike. The weekend crowd was gone, I was possibly the only customer in the store. The same woman was working the counter. I told her that I was there to pickup the bike, and I had a few questions about e-bikes. Again, she wheels on her heels and goes to get the work ticket off my bike, not even acknowledging my request for e-bike info. There's NO WAY she didn't hear me! It was then that I realized that this was a personality trait of hers, and that maybe she is unfortunately in the wrong position (retail, customer service) for her skillset. I asked her if I could speak to the manager. I was informed that she IS the manager. I quietly paid the repair bill, took my bike and headed out the door. Needless to say, I'll be looking elsewhere for an ebike purchase. My advice to her is: 1) Drink WAY less coffee 2) Work on your listening skills 3) Work on your patience 4) Treat your customers better! read more

I had a wonderful time in this store picking up guy line, a new bag, and some stakes. Steve the shoe guy was more than helpful and willing to ignore my goofy jokes until I finally got a laugh out of him. He helped me learn more about how my boots would and wouldn't stretch. Super helpful with lots of the information at well. There was a woman at the register whose name I didn't catch but she was happy to watch my boots while I shopped. She ended up helping me out with finding a mini day pack. Steve (shoe) even looked up the volume of the bag for me since it wasn't marked. I went back over to compare compression between two bags using my shoes as the sacks when another man (apparently the manager; lean mid length brown hair, bad attitude) demanded I remove them immediately and leave the store. I asked what was wrong and why. He said he would call the police in one minute. I asked why again, and he informed me that I was attempting to steal a bag in each shoe. Both bags stuck out the top so I'm not sure how I planned to make this surreptitious exit with my new gear- yet I haven't paid for my stakes l, guy line, and I meant to buy a nice mug. I completely forgot the mug, a main reason I came in, because that manager was so exceptionally rude and accusatory of me. The way that he immediately assumed my goal was to steal something isn't even the biggest issue. It's insulting, yes. I wear nice gear in good shape because I PAY for it. And the bag was cheap. It was unnecessary, loud, rude, and worst of all completely off base. I liked this store and I'll probably go back for a mug but after that, the manager can suck on my balloon knot. A+ Bike repairs. I have taken my bike to have it fixed a couple times and the service and workmanship was excellent! I'm new to the "bike world" and need help fixing an old bike, starting with the basics like fixing a flat tire. Kenji is very friendly and professional; he takes care of the job quickly and excellently. My gears were in bad condition- toast! Instead of having me replace the parts, he fixed them. I'm impressed with the quality of his work. He returned the bike which had been sitting in a garage for years, clean and oiled the chain. Kenji also took the time to explain how to fix a flat tire and told me what parts to buy that would best suit my needs. No matter how big or small the job, he will get it done with a smile. read more

Excellent costumer service. Boots and crampons worked wonders on Shasta during our 14 hour jaunt to the top. Absolutely no problems due to gear. Also be aware of the slushy show that occurs later in the day. No matter what gear you have, bring an extra pair of socks if you plan on being on the mountain past 12 as things do get wet. I would also recommend a helmet due to significant falling rock risk on Red Banks this past weekend. 10/10 would rent from again and possibly buy boots from next round. read more

In town to ski for a couple of days, we were doing a little shopping and walked into the 5th Season. There we found a great selection and people that knew what they were doing. I decided that I would finally replace my almost-15-year-old ski boots. I'd been afraid of finding ones as comfy as the old ones. Edgar helped me find the right boot and went through all the fitting so that I know have a great pair of boots. Then, when my daughter had problems with her boots we went back and he and the staff helped find some rentals that got her back on the slopes. This is a long overdue review for The Fifth Season. My husband and I have been bugging those nice folks for the past 3 years for gear rental, purchase, boot fitting and misc. Jeff knows his skis, ask him questions and he ll fix you up with the right pair; Jesse is a master at boot fitting for weirdly shaped feet, or just making your ski boots a whole lot more comfortable. I don't remember the names of the back room young men who tune skis, but they are all fantastic. Dani, Jessica and the names of the girls I didn't catch are the rest of the stuff, all knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Someone complained about their prices and compared to those of Redding. The Fifth Season has competitive prices, and there are tons of sales all the time. read more

First time to practice how to use crampons and ice axes, I rented them here. It was reasonable price and they offered one day price for 1.5 days. They showed me how to fit crampons on shoes very friendly. You can return gear at the box after the shop closes. Also it's a nice location. I wish they opened at 9 instead of 10. read more

For our first mountaineering experience climbing up Shasta, it was no doubt that we'd rent out the gear versus buying it. I don't remember the brands of ice ax, helmet, crampon, or mountaineering boots that we had, but I thought everything was in great shape and had no issues. My boyfriend on the other hand, had a lot of trouble with the boots, ultimately giving him blisters towards the end of the trip. It wasn't the store's fault; mountaineering boots are different for everyone and the fit for each brand can vary. It felt comfortable for him when he tried it on in store and walked around-but that's a different story for when you're actually on the mountain itself. In anyways, just a heads up about the boots. Customer service was good, although the staff didn't really extend any help in the boot fitting other than grabbing whatever size boots we needed and telling us that "it shouldn't be too tight or too much room at the toe box." We would have appreciated if they showed us how to put their crampons on. We spent about $100 per person for a three day rental (friday morning to sunday evening). Thankfully they had an after hours drop box for the gear. read more

Consider this my formal complaint. I have shopped at Fifth Season for the past few years, renting basic items, or purchasing sunscreen and the like. This weekend I rented an avalanche beacon for the day. I had a wonderful time hiking up Shasta, and I ended up getting back to town just after they had closed. My friend tells me they have a drop box in the back. I gently lower the beacon down into the overnight box using the beacon's attached harness. All good, so I thought. The next morning I get a call from Fifth Season (from the Owner, I imagine). I ask if he found the beacon I left in the box. He says that's why he's calling, and that if I were there right now, he'd "rip my lungs out". That's a direct quote, and it did not immediately sound like he was being funny, or joking. It sounded extremely condescending. Now, it's close to 8am and I'm in bed. I apologize. He explains the electronics are sensitive, and that they don't like items like that being left in the box. He also tells me everything seems to be working OK. He then makes another snide remark about ripping something out of me, which I could only assume was extreme passive aggressiveness. I apologize again and promise I'd never again make the mistake of using the overnight box for beacons and we end our call. Look, I get it. People break stuff because they are dumb, and I know that can be very frustrating. However, I think Fifth Season (or, this 1 person) is taking the wrong approach. It's easier to avoid these issues by having a more thorough conversation on the front-end, rather than on the back-end. Or, alternatively, by making some modifications to the overnight box. However, berating a local, repeat customer and threatening him (even if only jokingly) is the reason why I will now go OUT OF MY WAY to avoid doing business with this outfit. Which is too bad. Everyone else in the store that I've had interactions with have been top notch. read more

Every REI store in the San Francisco Bay Area, when inquired about renting gear for backpacking Shasta from them, said to not bother with their stores and go to Fifth Season. Seriously. This place has any piece of gear you might need for Shasta, including the ability to rent any super expensive gear that you don't want to buy (mountaineering boots, winter sleeping bags, crampons, ice axe, you name it, they have it). All the workers are extremely knowledgeable and pester you to make sure you don't have any doubts or questions about the hike. Special props go out to the guy who helped me get the gear I needed to rent - not only did he cheekily whap me in the arm with his papers to get my attention when I was spacing out, after I made a joke about a friend carrying my gear for me, he quipped, "You carry your own gear, woman!". Major lols to be had, since he said everything in good fun. read more

Being the main place to buy and rent gear in town, they could easily inflate their rates, but they don't. Came here for rentals (crampons and ice axe) to climb the mountain and was told that the crampons they have wont fit my boot. You know the staffs advice for me was? To rent their mountain boots with crampons attached to them and carry the extra 10lbs with me until needed then switch out the boots when i got to the top. When I got to the trail I realized how screwed over I got. No one in their right mind would carry an extra pair of boots with them on clear creek (one of the easiest and least technical route) during the dead of summer! Nonetheless I carried those boots on my back for 17hrs because I knew I'd need them at the top. Never again. You know what the underlying message here was? These guys value $$$ over people And don't know s**t about mountaineering. read more

Overall, great rental and retail experience! Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We stopped by here to pick up some mountaineering gear for Shasta and the whole rental process was incredible smooth and efficient. However, they did sell us on crampons, mountaineering boots, and ice axes when no snow travel was required up the Clear Creek route to the summit. The best route up CC at the time was a rocky scramble (there was also an on-snow route but it is optional and the snow was pretty sketchy). So none of the gear came out of my pack. Long story short, we spent a little more money and carried a little more weight than was necessary. Better safe than sorry in terms of gear but I'd recommend tracking down someone that has actually been up the route you intend to go recently before going to the rental shop. Other pluses, you can buy your Summit pass right at the shop, they do 2-3 day rentals (so no need to rush the return trip), and they also have a drop box for rental gear if you make it back after the shop's closed. read more

This is my good juju stop anytime i head up the mountain. This year 'round sporting goods shop carries everything you need to summit Mount Shasta except courage, mental preparedness and stamina. Get an up to date report from the employees and some backcountry tips added to your mental catalogue plus that extra cannister of fuel you may need to melt snow. They have a small selection of bikes, ranging from downhill to townie bikes. The guys in the bike shop know some good trails on shasta and if you are cool they will give you the chicken scratch trail map they've made. read more

I came here to rent gear for our summit hike on Mount Shasta on a very busy Memorial Day weekend. The customer service was really good and the people here were awesome & very helpful! We were able to get everything we needed for our trip and they helped size our boots and showed us how to put on on our crampons. The drop off in the back was really convenient since we were able to drop off all of our rental gear after business hours. What I really liked about this place was that I forgot my hiking boots in their shop after renting my gear and realized it after I returned home to SoCal. I called them up and they were very friendly and said that they had them and could return them to me. I was so relieved that they had them and would be able to return them to me since they were very expensive boots that I didn't want to have to buy again. They were so nice and they shipped them to me. You don't find customer service like this very often. The people here were really nice to do something like that since most times you would be lucky to get something back that you forgot on a trip! read more

This store has everything, even $15 carbon fiber spoons, why you would need a carbon fiber spoon I am not sure but they have them. They also have a great selection of backcountry gear to rent.
