Castle Lake Campground

I tried to find a listing for the actual Castle Lake but instead just found the campground. To be…read moreclear, the campground is a short distance prior to the actual lake which has its own parking lot and trailheads. Once parked at the lake, you can embark on the moderate trail to Heart Lake. Approaching the lake, the trail is to the left of it and climbs along the lake shore with intermittent views. As you take a gradual but steady climb up, you will start to see views open up and eventually see Mt Shasta itself. Most hikers stop at Heart Lake which is a scenic spot with granite on one side and on the outlet side of the lake for Shasta views. If you're wanting a little bit of a longer hike, when facing the lake, make a right and log hop across its outlet and follow a faint but obvious trail to a rocky outcropping. There you will reach an amazing vista of Castle Lake and Mt Shasta. It's a great spot to have your lunch and take some amazing photos. Take care on the way down as there are some steep drop offs and slippery rocks. Most of the trail is exposed, so I'd go earlier in the day in the warm months. Depending on how far you go, it's 3-4 miles out and back. Wonderful way to have amazing mountain scenery in a short hike. Free parking at the lake and pit toilets (not the best, not the worst I've seen.)

This review is for Heart Lake Trail From Castle Lake which was a ~3 miles round trip that took ~2…read morehour to complete. One of the must do hikes near Dunsmuir. Trail was a steady incline for the most part and becomes very steep near the end. Furthermore, trail transitions from a wooded area to a rocky and exposed terrain. Stunning views of the nearby mountains and lakes at higher elevation! Heart Lake was actually referring to a small lake at the top. At the end of the hike, you get a heart shaped view of Castle Lake! Short video of the hike for those interested! https://youtu.be/Xc34KEsV1TE By the way, the address on Yelp is incorrect. Use AllTrails or Google.

The staff here is understaffed doing their absolute best that they can with a smile on their face to tend to you. I blame the bad campers that come along trashing the place and treating it like your home. Remember its only your home for a bit but that doesn't mean trash it and go home expecting someone else to clean it, their not your momma! Hats off to the staff here even being overwhelmed and understaffed handled everything well. Hats off to the lady at the bait shop I think her name was Kathy absolute kind hearted person, the girl at the general store that needed to repeat herself to I dont know how many people that the ice cream machine was down and lastly the guy with the microphone at splashzone needing to be stern with groups not listening to his commands of getting off the water for the next group to be able to go. The guy needed to repeatedly asked the same group that times up to now leave and the next group cannot go until they get off, again bad campers not the staff. Do better and leave your high expectations at home and at times help out if you can like pack out what you packed in, leave the place nicer than how you came in. Do your part!

They have done a lot of things to improve the camp, however problems still remain. Last year they…read moreseemed unable to control campers that broke their rules. This year, with the camp less than half full, they put all campers on a loop, next to each other. One night, a group two sites away were noisy until well after midnight. The next night the family in a tent 15 feet away from mine had an unhappy child that cried most of the night. Not much sleep either night. When I asked why they don't spread the campers out so that there is more space between each camper, they replied that the computer assigns campsites. They didn't seem interested in changing it. :-(

So, I've rafted the entirety of the Trinity River on a personnel level and have taken two guided…read moretrips. First in 23' with Bigfoot (it was good) and the second with Trinity Rafting. This trip, bar none, was outstanding. Now, maybe it was the guide affect? Our guide Ben gave us far more then we anticipated. I had my 20 yo daughter with me and she had a blast. Ben created a fun and relaxed atmosphere void of any tight-ass guide power trips. A full day doesn't mean a full day of class III. The class III rapids are a blast but the stops at the N. Fork, the unreal waterfall hike, jump rock and plenty of swimming opportunities are an added bonus! Enjoy!

It was my daughter's 11th birthday, and I couldn't imagine having more fun doing something else. Our guide Glenn was awesome! He was fun and personable. He knew the river, kept us safe, and taught us what we needed to know. He brought lunch for us. He took us on a hike to a waterfall. He gave us opportunities to swim, jump off rocks and even taught my daughter how to steer the boat. We also got to witness a masterful backflip off the boat into the water by Glenn. Thanks Glenn for the EPIC trip and the great memories. If you don't use Trinity River Rafting as your guide, you're making a big mistake.

100% TRUE TO THEIR WORD In an era where reliance on the…read moreinternet to research a regularity nowadays, I know how some can be skeptical of what they see vs what is actually delivered. In this case, EVERYTHING promoted and promised on the website is what you get! Doug, Heidi, their family and entire staff do an amazing job to make you feel welcome and part of the Marble Mountain Ranch family. From the moment we arrived at the Ranch, we were met by Doug, who hopped on his ATV and led us to our cabin, gave us a tour and informed us about dinner that first night. I'll break the rest of this review up into parts to help you get an idea of how much fun MMR is as well as how everything they promise is delivered upon...all while trying not to spoil the surprise of how amazing being there is. BOOKING: It is a working ranch and know that it is normal to get their answering machine when you call. Leave a message if you don't get Doug or Heidi on the phone with your number and know they'll definitely call you back. Heidi is amazing and will answer any and all questions you have. Do make sure you have a "Plan B & C" as dates/weeks fill up rather quickly. Be sure to have your whole party size ready as well as Heidi does a great job making sure your whole party has adequate and appropriately comfortable accommodations for your party. ACCOMMODATIONS/LODGING: The cabins are beautiful and plenty spacious for all your party's needs. Every cabin is equipped with a window A/C unit that keeps everything plenty cool on hot days and a floor heater for those trips where the weather turns cooler. They are stocked it's pots, pans, dish and silverware, a full refrigerator/freezer and microwave. Bedrooms are perfect size for every guest as well. FOOD: Fresh cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinners are prepared by Heidi and her staff and provide you delicious meals that sufficiently fill you for the day ahead or to fill a hungry belly after a full day of activities. There's a variety of options for everyone - and at dinner time, there are wine and beer options as well. ACTIVITIES: You WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! Everyone, at every skill level will have an opportunity to experience everything. From your time in the arena learning how to guide, ride and get comfortable on a horse, to being on the trails taking in the forest and amazing views, to your time on the River going through the rapids, you are never disappointed. Doug and Heidi employ some of the most knowledgeable, kind, and engaging staff our group has ever met at a vacation getaway. Heidi makes sure you provide them, when booking, your skill levels to ensure everyone has a safe and amazing time. CONCLUSION: In the technological age where we're perennially connected to all things electronics, this was an amazing opportunity to unplug, get away from the hustle and bustle of busy life and enjoy nature in all its glory. We had two teenage girls in our party and they didn't miss being unable to scroll social media, or the internet all day long. By the end of each day you were physically spent and happy to have downtime with family and other ranch guests. Each night there were activities and opportunities to engage with and get to know Doug & Heidi, their family and staff. Our family came in with no expectations other than the excitement of a new and different opportunity at a getaway vacation. We were blown away at how amazing the experience was and we're already planning a return visit in the coming years. From our family to Doug, Heidi, their family and staff we say THANK YOU for an AMAZING experience that we will not soon forget! I hope this review helps continue to bring you great business and prosperity in the future...and we look forward to seeing you all again soon!

From the charmingly appointed rustic cabins to the farm to table exceptional homemade meals and…read moredeserts, this ranch exceeded any expectations I might have had. All the activities are scheduled so carefully that I was able to participate in everything I wanted to do. Their horses are very well cared for, well behaved and trained. No swaybacked trail nags here! The up to date whitewater rafts and staff were all very knowledgeable and safety oriented. We had some GREAT rapids rides!! The shooting involved expert SAFE instruction and a revolving set of varied experiences with different weapons. The children in attendance had the time of their lives as did this 74 year old horsewoman! The ranch is self sufficient ( off the grid) and well off the beaten path. A real community developed amongst the guests under the guidance and warm personalities of Heidi and Doug. The 30 plus years of love and devotion to the upkeep of the natural beauty of their ranch showed in the gardens and plantings of flowers and trees in abundance. Even the gaggle of teenaged sisters spent less time in the lodge (the only WiFi) than one would have imagined! A fun and deeply relaxing time in nature was had by all. I will definitely be back again! Happy Trails!
