Since we were told the food came from the same kitchen, we decided to stay. Our waitress was very nice and kind, but it did seem like she became a bit overwhelmed with such a large table. This restaurant location is actually split into two. "The five fishermen" is on the second floor, and the first floor they call "Little fish". They couldn't accommodate a table of 10 upstairs, so they sat us down stairs. The food was alright, considering the price point I expected a bit more. But overall the table was satisfied with their dishes. Those that ordered the lobster did say they were really good though. Unfortunately, some dishes were forgotten and never came out. We had high hopes for Five Fishermen, and while there were definitely some highlights, the overall experience didn't quite justify the price. First off, the atmosphere is lovely--refined but not stuffy--and the service was wonderful throughout. Our server was friendly and attentive, which really helped set the tone for the night. We originally wanted to try a couple of cocktails, but the prices were sky-high, so we stuck with beer instead. Thankfully, the beer selection was solid and went well with our meals. I ended up ordering the burger, mostly because the steaks were way out of our price range. That said, I was pleasantly surprised--the burger was excellent. Super juicy, with a delicious aioli and tomato jam that really elevated it. My wife had the vegetarian risotto, and while she enjoyed it once everything was mixed together, the base risotto itself was pretty bland. Not a bad dish, but definitely not worth what we paid for it. If we weren't on a budget, we might have been able to explore more of the menu--and maybe that would have changed our impression. So glad we saved the Five Fishermen for our last meal in Halifax. What a treat! As soon as we walked in, we knew we would enjoy our evening. Upscale but relaxed. The restaurant is a quite large, but broken down into pleasant intimate spaces. We loved the atmosphere. Erin our server was very helpful and had a great personality. My wife had the boiled lobster, which was separated from the shell and then returned for presentation at the table. She loved it. My salmon was delicious. We sat at the bar, which is our favorite place because we can talk with the staff and other patrons. It was fairly busy in the restaurant but we had the bar to ourselves, and were able to order from the full menu. David, who I believe may have been the manager, was engaging and provided some great commentary as we looked over our options. The Crabby Patties were delicious as were the fries. My husband had the seafood carbonara and finished the entire bowl, despite talking about how full he was. The seafood chowder was excellent, containing far more varieties of seafood than the normal chowder. The mixed seafood platter included a lobster claw perfectly boiled so it was fully cooked but still juicy--not rubbery as at many other places. The scallop was well-seared and nicely seasoned so as to add flavor but not to take away any natural scallop flavor. The shrimp were properly cleaned and sautéed just as taught in the culinary school I attended. And the risotto that acted as the bed for serving was rich and creamy. The different sauces added to each portion of the risotto holding the various delicacies added joyful surprises for the tastebuds. The cheesecake was marvelous and would have won the contest for best dessert of the trip, but it barely lost to Five Fishermen's PBJ Ganache, which won for its heavenly offering of chocolate Service provided by Kevin and his trainee Dan was friendly but not intrusive and entirely correct. Five fishermen was on couple different restaurant recommendation lists (eater Montreal being one of them) and being a seafood lover, I was excited to give them a try. I ordered their scallop ceviche at the recommendation of the bartender serving me and it was a-OK. And since those resto lists had Five fish experience as an entree rec, I ordered that, too: I was expecting to get relatively full for a $53 seafood dish but that wasn't the case as all the fishes on the plate were quite tiny in size. I added their sautéed maritime mushrooms and that was pretty delish. If it weren't for the mushrooms, I would have still been a bit hungry at the end of my meal. Service was pretty decent. Was expecting a bit more attentive service for my check being over $130 plus taxes and tips as a solo diner on this visit. Their red sangria was pretty nice and old fashioned was not bad. This is a review of the downstairs Little Fish Wine Bar, which for some reason doesnt come up on Yelp. My opening dish was called Burrata had a small cut half round. It was overwhelmed by the salad. You also miss the experience of cutting into the round and having the whey ooz out. Tasty, but falsely advertised. I'd rather pay more for a proper Burrata dish. The lobster thermador was ok, but I'd still prefer a regular steamed lobster dinner. The carrots, though apparently blanched, were very hard and I prefer a creamy coleslaw. I sent back the toffee cake dessert. The cake was cold, the toffee was cold and hard and insufficient in amount even if it were warm. Service was great. read more

After hearing about the history of this restaurant and seeing it on multiple "must eat in Halifax" lists, we decided to visit on Halloween thinking that it would be spooky. It was a great restaurant and a great dinner, but if you're going for the spooky/historical aspect, it really isn't noticeable. The Five Fisherman has an upscale nautical theme, which is done in a classy and non-cheesy way. It fits perfectly with Halifax's Atlantic location and culture. Our waitress was really nice, and gave recommendations of things to do in the area. I got the filet with peppercorn sauce. The filet and sauce were both great overall, although the steak itself could've used a bit more seasoning. Madea reservation but there was seating available if you don't mind not being in the main dining room. Main dining room was quite warm and was uncomfortable for the first 10minutes while we adjusted. Ordered the strawberry daiquiri but it was just a can. They must have added a squeeze of lemon to the cup as the glass was super sour but if you drink from the can it was only sweet. Not a fan. Five fisherman experience we shared 2 orders between 3 people. Definitely designed to be 1 per person. Each of us could have easily eaten 1 order alone. The biggest disappointment was them trying to pass their potatoes off as pomme aligot, which is a stretchy potato and cheese dish. The food wasn't great. I started with 4 oysters from the oyster bar, which seemed to be fine. I followed that with a half lobster that was cut in half and seemingly missing parts. The garlic butter and the side of fries I ordered were all cold. Later that evening I began to get sick to my stomach....my lips tingling I ate a bad oyster kind of sick...really sick and have been in bed since, which isn't great considering I'm from out of town and staying in a hotel. This is a well oiled machine. Service was efficient, timed well and every recommendation spot on. Food was perfect cooked. I had a scallop dish and my husband the halibut. Both had great flavor, beautiful presentation and just the right amount. Incandescent lights gave the restaurant a beautiful glow that was not too bright and not too dark. This restaurant made my entire trip to NS. It was our 10 year anniversary and we desperately wanted seafood. Entering the establishment we could instantly tell we were in for a lavish experience. The handsome, great smelling server (having just got a new cologne) was so friendly and attentive. As we settled in with drinks, we had our first two apps, the scallop ceviche and local oysters, and they were incredible. Our server found out it was our anniversary and came over with champagne which was so thoughtful, we had our mains and we laughed and ate and the entire time we were so happy. At the end of our meal our server brought us a slice of chocolate heaven and lemon love and I instantly knew I'd come back here again. Five Fishermen was a lovely place with great service and romantic atmosphere, but the food was substantially overrated. You can get ocean fresh well-cooked seafood anywhere in Nova Scotia / PEI, so we expected more elevated preparations. The menu descriptions suggest they should be. However of 2 entrees, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, and a craft cocktail, nothing really popped. Expected flavors were nearly undetectably subtle, under-seasoned, or overpowered by less interesting ingredients. The best other than desserts, for example and oddly for the seafood focus, was a beef tartare with bone marrow served in a canoe-cut bone. But the beef cut wasn't especially flavorful or melt-in-mouth tender, the marrow was undetectable, and all was overpowered by grana. The sablefish sauce had no miso flavor, and the crab cake sauce lacked any dimension at all. The lobster Mac and cheese was the most flavorful. That said, the staff was accommodating of a dietary restriction (not reviewing any accommodated food here) and a reservation request, and the cost wasn't astronomical in comparison to a more basic seafood restaurant in the area. Would be nice for a romantic spot. read more

It was my first time visiting Halifax and was sort of doing my own culinary tour of my own. I had a high expectation coming to this restaurant. The host was very nice and friendly, however from the moment i was seated, it took some time for the waitress to actually came by even though the floor was not that busy. Onto the food, out of the things ordered, the chowder was the most decent. The five experience was no experience. The lobster tail was really sticking to the shell, the shrimps were not cooked all equally, out of the three only one that wasn't overcooked. Scallops were done well, so was the fish, but then all these supposedly delicious seafood were doused in sauce that was just overpowering. Dessert of the lemon foam was just standard. Overall, for similar main course, the restaurant across the street has it better. read more

I was on a seafood hunt during my latest trip in Halifax and stumbled upon the Five Fisherman in my research. Reservations were quite easy to make! The place is surprisingly big and spacious. The interior design is tasteful and elegant, but not too fancy. The overall atmosphere was quiet although the place was quite busy at the time. The menu is clear and simple with a variety of options (both seafood and land). The variety of wines and other beverages is nice and the service was attentive and professional. I ordered the seafood chowder and the five fish experience (seared jumbo shrimp, local scallops, half lobster tail, halibut, salmon, maritime gourmet mushroom risotto, kabayaki, nori cracker). Both were fantastic and full of flavour! I highly recommend the Five Fish Experience if you are torn between which seafood option to get as it seems to have a bit of everything. The chowder was also rich and delicious and my only complaint is the portion size (very small) which I guess makes sense given its richness. Both plates were a bit overpriced (in my opinion) but hey, they are supposed to be on the higher end of restaurants in Halifax. Price aside, the restaurant is a 5/5! Also, apparently the restaurant is haunted but it seems unlikely. Finally, they also have a special menu for vegetarian options (not huge but at least they have one). read more

I had two dinners at The Five Fishermen recently, while in town for a conference. A local had said it wasn't quite as nice or good as it used to be. But he was surprised - they really upped their game recently! For the first meal, it was a fixed menu, and I chose the seafood chowder and arctic char - both excellent! But the highlight was the second meal, where I had oysters and the lobster dinner. Both were so fresh and tasty! Really one of the best seafood meals I've had in years. One nice highlight to end the meal was dessert. The first night I had the chocolate square with sea salt. Very nice. But you MUST go for the salted caramel and toffee squares - unbelievable! In Halifax for a couple of days for work. The Five Fishermen had great reviews so I decided to go for it. It's Monday night but thought I'd call ahead for reservations. They're booked until 8:45! Bar seating is first come first serve. So I rush over and make it just after 7pm. No bar seats...but I don't know if there actually weren't any or the hostess was holding them for someone. She wouldn't let me have a look. Anyway, I was given the option of dining at 5 Social, their bistro/bar downstairs and thought why not! Great ambiance! Sat at the bar. Ordered a nice glass of local wine (Gaspereau Tidal Bay) and it was quite lovely! Ordered the halibut for dinner, which the bartender said was his favorite. I love halibut. This one was disappointing though. Everything around it including the sauce were great, but the halibut was so dry! I was so sad. I would have expected much better for $39! I almost wonder if it was cooked from frozen???!! Goes to show you...everything can be right but if the food is wrong, it's not worth it. We have so many options these days! read more

What a lovely evening! Went out for before Xmas dinner with the family and had a lovely time. Lovely old building that has been renovated very stylishly. Fun list of cocktails (they do smoked manhattans and old fashioneds that was great) Our server told us about the history (vey haunted) and the menu was great. Lots of lovely options even close to them being closed for two or three days. We had oysters, scallops, 5 fishes and the streak. The steak was to DIE FOR. You could cut it with a butter knife it was so tender. The 5 fish were nice to try a few items but the swordfish was a little more fishy than I'm into (could have just been me) and the risotto was pretty salty.
