Oysters check. Scallop ceviche check. Seafood tower check. All the seafood was fresh and great flavors. Skip the burger. It was meh - well done and pretty dry. The service - and this was a friday afternoon so maybe that's why - was extremely slow. We ordered our first round at 5:15, didn't get the food until close to 6. It was also extremely windy and cold outside. So I'd return for indoor seating only and plan to wait a long time for food. This isn't the only place in Halifax that was very slow in getting food out, however.

Our first dinner in Halifax this trip and a delightful one. Lovely spot and great service. Started with a dozen (13) oysters which were three different local varieties, we liked them all and loved one. My wife had the whole lobster which, unfortunately was just slightly overcooked but sweet and delicious. The mussels were in a mild red curry sauce and very tasty. We were also very impressed that they had Portuguese Vino Verde as a wine offering. For desert we tried the "tasty bites" a lovely collection of Macrons, brownies, eclairs, some chocolate and goose berries. Everything was excellent and the Macrons better than some we have had in France. If they had nailed the lobster this would have been a 5 rating.

Halifax vacation is not complete without having fresh lobster. It was $53 market price. Lots of fresh oyster to choose in the bar. Staff very friendly. Public parking in the front.

happy hour oysters! already ate most of them lol

Shuck 100% has my vote for the best oysters in the city!! We went for the 1.50 per oyster happy hour deal and all the oysters we got were so fresh and after talking to our waiter he chose the perfect selection of oysters for us. Along with the oysters we got 3 appetizers to share which were all delicious even tho i wish there was more sauce on the muscles, but regardless they were still great! The only let down was the desert which tasted like it was bought at costco but what can you really expect for dessert from a seafood restaurant lol. Overall a great experience with delicious food, amazing service and great prices. Definitely give this place a try next time you're near the waterfront!

I think visiting the East Coast is as much about food as it is the history of the land. When I'm out East, I absolutely need to partake in local fair. SCHUCK did not disappoint. Exceptionally fresh Local Oysters, sweet crab and other fresh seafood options. Our group had the seafood tower, oysters, seafood boil, burger, fish and chips and beef tenderloin, basically everything they had to offer. The gastro feel of the food and venue were on full display. No dish disappointed. We had a few bottles of wine, mixed drinks and desserts and our party of six got out for just over $600. It was a steal of meal and service. The servers were knowledgeable, friendly and prompt with service. I will be back and will recommend the place to friends I know coming for a visit or living in Halifax.

An almost empty bottle of Tabasco with caked dried sauce around the neck.

For me, a three star rating is an acceptable one. A four or five star must be deserved, by restaurants that go above and beyond. A three star says " good effort ", " it was good ", but nothing exceptional. Shuck deserves three stars. Barely. What differentiates an ok restaurant from a good, great, or exceptional one is the willingness to try harder. There are restaurants that try, and some that don't. Some try to make your visit memorable for all the right reason, and some that really have no interest in trying. Shuck is in the later category. Went there for dinner with my wife. Ordered the plate of thirteen oysters, the mussels with chorizo, and the crispy fish n' chips. Whomever prepares the plate of oysters selects from an interesting variety arriving from various locales, and tonight they were mostly from PEI and Nova Scotia. I asked if they could possibly put one or two from Fortune, NS, which I saw in their display. Nope. No interest. We're not even gonna try. The mussels were good. The preparation with chorizo is interesting, and the two flavours make an interesting marriage. The broth was unexpectedly bland, given the spiciness of the chorizo. The portion was generous. The fish n' chip was indeed quite crispy but that's mostly because it was overcooked. The fish part was quite tasty, whenever I could get a glimpse of it. Unfortunately, the piece that I was served was mostly made up of batter and panko, with a thin sliver of fish. Mentioned this to the server in response to the now obligatory " Is everything OK ? " A restaurant that tries would have done something; a gesture, a free something. Here, nothing. We asked if it was ok, but we don't care. Just take what we serve you, we have no interest in trying. I like Tabasco sauce with my fish n' chip. The server brought a bottle that was almost empty, no cap, and cakes of dried sauce all around the neck of the bottle. I wouldn't touch that thing. They really, really don't try. Sorry, Shuck.

Next up on the Nova Scotia Trip, Shuck Seafood. This was great place for our party of 8. Oysters fresh, Snow Crab legs mmmmm, Calamari thumbs up from my daughter, and the kids burger 10/10 from my son. Really great service, and overall great experience!

Very nice but you must go during the happy hour to enjoy reasonable price.. menu a bit overpriced for what it is. Ambiance is nice tho!

Definitely check this place out if you're in town! Take take reservations via open table, but we actually came early to catch their happy hour between 5-6pm where you get half price oysters, $5 beer pints and $2 off wine every day We came for the happy hour and ended up staying for dinner. Everything was very good After ordering a dozen oysters between 2 people and a few pints of beer & glasses of wine, we ended up ordering the fried smelts- deliciously crispy fish that were packed with flavour and not overly fishy Then we ordered the onion rings (definitely order these as they were perfectly battered and crispy with some spicy ketchup) and the half lobster boil (half lobster along with some clams, mussels, sausage, and bread for mopping up the butter sauce) The bill came out under $100 and for what we got, there's great value. Service was also on point and very friendly. Cheers

The mixed seafood platter included a lobster claw perfectly boiled so it was fully cooked but still juicy--not rubbery as at many other places. The scallop was well-seared and nicely seasoned so as to add flavor but not to take away any natural scallop flavor. The shrimp were properly cleaned and sautéed just as taught in the culinary school I attended. And the risotto that acted as the bed for serving was rich and creamy. The different sauces added to each portion of the risotto holding the various delicacies added joyful surprises for the tastebuds. The cheesecake was marvelous and would have won the contest for best dessert of the trip, but it barely lost to Five Fishermen's PBJ Ganache, which won for its heavenly offering of chocolate Service provided by Kevin and his trainee Dan was friendly but not intrusive and entirely correct. We came here right at opening for breakfast and there was already a decent amount of people starting their day here with a meal. The staff was warm and welcoming and seated us right away. Even though it was breakfast, I like that their menu offered some lunch options in case you're looking for something more heartier. The food is fresh, tasty and well-seasoned. I ordered the seafood chowder which was delicious and included tons of seafood. The breakfast options are plentiful, but whatever you do, be sure to try their blueberry lavender jam! It's so delicious and made fresh in-house with local blueberries. It was so good, that I wanted to buy a jar, but couldn't since I had a long flight afterwards and it needed refrigeration. I'd definitely recommend this spot to grab a bite and drinks and I hope they offer a shelf-stable blueberry lavender jam soon!

We came by on a quiet weekday evening in the lead up to the holidays, and the menu was as diverse and creative as ever. The small plates were calling to us - and as always, they let us try as much as possible. The ricotta toast light and bright, with layers of seasonal savouriness. Tender slivers of poached pear, spiced walnuts, watermelon radish and arugula came together for a wonderful mix of tastes and textures, and a fig balsamic glaze brought further sweetness and richness. My wife and I have always been fans of dahl curries, and Black Sheep's presentation was next level, or even multiple levels, for what is normally not a particularly visually appealing dish. Seared halloumi was perched on top, surrounded by a colourful mix of papadam, raita, pickled fennel and red onion, and cilantro. The resulting composition was an enjoyable spin on this dish, while still sticking respectfully close to its roots. I first came across ćevapi/ćevapčići at a Bosnian grocery/restaurant in Ottawa, and loved the grilled, casing-less sausages, and how they paired with accoutrements like ajvar (a red pepper and eggplant sauce), red onions, and flatbread. When I saw it on a restaurant menu in Halifax, it was an automatic "yes"! The little pork sausages had a great char from the grill, and had a rustic grain to the meat, but were still quite tender and juicy. The extra bits complemented them well, with the vegetal freshness of the ajvar, some tartness from the tomatoes and pickled red onion, and a salty pop from the feta. Last but not least was an order of fries. Since they opened, Black Sheep's hand-fries have consistently been some of the best in the city, and their iconic squid ink mayo still makes for delish dipping - with a goth vibe. I hope Black Sheep is doing well in their new digs, because the food that they're making is still as destination-worthy as ever, and now they have the space to match it.

I found it was refreshing for a hot day and given the ingredients were less flavourful, the lobster's sweetness was more pronounce. Yet, there's something about the some fancy or warm version that was tastier. Who doesn't like garlic butter with lemon and chives thrown in for freshness? It was delicious, but a tad overcooked so the lobster was chewier than the cold version. If you're hungry, one roll will not be enough. Luckily, it comes with a quarter spear of pickle and bag of chips (they were out of coleslaw and potato salad by the early afternoon). Not necessarily filling, but enough to leave you satisfied. If you can hold off on diving into the roll, I recommend walking further down the harbourfront to find a table away from the main food area. While there was tables available in The Salt Yard, it's also a seagull pit. Finding a clean table can be difficult and you'll have to watch out for a wayward wing brushing close to your head. The atmosphere, though, felt a bit underwhelming--not quite as lively or unique as many of the other Halifax spots we visited during our trip.
