My sister and I took a trip for our first time to Halifax and we went here our first night. It was a Friday around 730 pm and we were able to get a table outside with a beautiful view! Our waitress was so nice and she stopped to talk with us about local shops. We really liked our food, my burger was really good and the patties were nice and crispy. I would definitely recommend this place to others!

Salt + Ash Beach House is a great restaurant by the Halifax waterfront - we were able to sit outside for lunch. We ordered the Fish & Chips ($28.50), Crab & Leek Chowder ($18.50), the Iceberg Wedge Salad ($18.50), and the Jalapeno Cornbread ($10). Our favorite was probably the Crab & Leek Chowder - it was different but super flavorful with lots of chunks of crab in it. Your could really taste the jalapenos in the cornbread, but it wasn't overpowering. The Iceberg Wedge Salad was disappointing - it was heavily coated with dressing, too much cheap cheese and too much processed bacon bits. The Fish + Chips came with a nicely sized piece of fried fish which was crispy on the outside; make sure to ask for malt vinegar to go with that! Overall we had a nice lunch outside at Salt + Ash!

We had a lovely quick lunch on the patio. Fast friendly service was much appreciated. The food was delicious! I enjoyed the fish tacos, hubby had a fish sandwich and my 6 yr old had a pizza. Everyone was very happy and we would eat here again.

Every course was fantastic, great service from Sean and fantastic views. I enjoyed the ambiance and laid back ambiance. But the fresh ingredients and skillful preparation and presentation make it great date night or casual nite out. Can't wait to try happy hour or lunch menus

In the touristy waterfront district, Salt + Ash manages to attract a crowd of locals, and in particular, local white-collar professionals -- despite the "beach house" name, nobody is showing up in shorts and flip-flops. The name is nonetheless pretty apt, because it's right on the water and boasts a convivial atmosphere -- cheerful and quite loud, but in a pleasant way, with festive vibes that don't cross the line into drunken shouting or anything like that. The decor, like the patrons, is quite polished, and floor-to-ceiling windows wrap around most of the restaurant, affording impressive views from virtually every table. Those windows, btw, are practically equivalent to one-way mirrors -- from the outside, it's not apparent that Salt + Ash is actually open, even when the dining room is jam-packed. The menu leans toward hearty fare, such as chowder and deep-fried this and that, but also offers lighter bites, such as crudo and "charcoal veggies." There's plenty of seafood, and quite a few dishes are inflected with spicy elements usually associated with Mexico, the southwestern U.S. or Japan (e.g., jalapeno cornbread "elote" with queso fresco, tater tots with sour cream, salsa and avocado, and scallops with chili oil and cilantro). There's also plenty of pizza, which is ubiquitous around Nova Scotia, perhaps a legacy of Giovanni Caboto, better known as John Cabot. The pizza that you'll find around the province is often quite good, and Salt + Ash's pizza is no exception. We ordered the "maritime mushroom" pie, and it had a pretty exemplary crust (lightly charred, foldable but not floppy), plus a legitimately wide variety of fungi, including maitake, shitake and portabella. (The variety of cheeses, however, could be scaled back -- the Boursin-style cheese was a bit overpowering.) Fish and chips are also textbook -- one enormous fillet, a lively tartar sauce and a stack of battered-spud spears. I strongly recommend the "beach house salad," which is a big bowl of vibrant lettuces, pickled red onions and shaved beets. The aforementioned charcoal veggies are also excellent; they consist of various root vegetables cooked al dente and plated with style. The salad and the charcoal veggies are both steals at just $6CAD. And speaking of prices, they're extremely reasonable across the board, given the quality, the upscale vibe and the super-skillful service. You'll pay about as much for similar dishes at the boardwalk shacks just a few hundred yards away. So yeah, if you're strolling around the waterfront or working nearby and feeling hungry, Salt + Ash is among your very best bets.

Came here after trying to get a table at the French not on the same block where no one even acknowledged us. So the service at this restaurant was a welcome surprise. Every one was very nice, the vibe in the restaurant was very relaxed, and the food came out in good time and was delicious!

I went right after lunch, but still in time for happy hour. I had the Turkey sandwich, which is currently a special menu item but it was delicious! My waitress was very kind and made the perfect cocktail recommendation to pair with my meal. It was a 10/10 experience in a beautiful restaurant with a view!

My friend and I came here on a late Sunday night. The place was already thriving with their bingo night. The ambiance of the restaurant has a beach house vibe with modern architecture and fireplaces everywhere. They also have outdoor seating on a patio with fire pits as well with the view of the harbour. Happy hour happens twice a day every day and we happened to be in during happy hour as well. We ordered their pizza of the week which was their posh Hawaiian pizza and their nachos but with tater tots. The food was really good, and the service was great as well bringing smiles on everyone's faces. If you're in Halifax, I would definitely come back here on any night.

Had a nice lunch with some friends at about 1 PM. Quite noisy in the restaurant. The food and service was really good though. I had the smoked haddock chowder which was delicious and different. Friends had the haddock tacos because it was taco Tuesday. The single piece of haddock was deep-fried. Hubby had the babe burger which might've been a little overcooked. Fries were hot and crispy and good. A kid got the kids pizza which was huge for a kid serving. The ice cream of the day was strawberry pineapple and three scoops, served in a chilled bowl. All in all a good experience, except hard to talk with the noise level. Harbor views are exceptional unless it's foggy.

Fish tacos and Nova Scotia Lager

I arrived from Toronto and I was looking for a patio to sit and relax while waiting to check into my hotel. This place was the perfect spot with a beautiful view of the waterfront. The beer was a light, fresh & crisp lager and the Tacos were light and delicious. I would highly recommend!

Great location with a very chill atmosphere. We were there at the end of May which was before the tourist season really started. My salmon was delicious and my husband enjoyed his lobster roll. Waiter was super friendly and the staff even gave us local tips regarding the best red beaches.

The Long Version: I had heard great things about Evan's Seafood so my husband and I made a special trip to Dartmouth from Halifax on our vacation to check it out. It's right by the Alderney Ferry Landing so we took the ferry over and we were right there (ferry fare was $3 a person and it's a 15 minute ride). We got the Platter for 2 ($40) which came with 2 pieces of haddock, 4 Digby scallops, a half order of clams, half fries and half salad. We got to choose our salad (from Cesar, garden, spinach or Greek) and we got the garden salad with the dressing on the side. The amount of food was not sufficient for 2 people, imo. We had to go get a second dinner afterwards, lol. (My husband is an average-sized man and I am a much smaller than average-sized woman). Everything fit on one regular-sized dinner plate. However, the food did taste good ;) The Platter for 2 is gluten-free by default. The haddock breading was crunchy and I liked that it wasn't overly greasy. The scallops were a good size and were nicely cooked. Tender and not rubbery. The clams were good as well, although there was lots of batter on them. The fries were crispy and although not shoestring fries, I still enjoyed them. The salad was fresh and had a good variety of vegetables, but it was only a few mouthfuls. You order and pay at the counter. You tell them if you want to sit indoors or outdoors. They give you a numbered table sign and you place it wherever you want to sit. They will bring the food to you when it's ready and will clear the table when you're done, but they do not check up on you otherwise. Ambiance is...well...you're eating at a ferry terminal, lol. But if you eat outside, you're by the water. The patio was busy though, so we ate inside. I'm glad we tried it and it was fun taking the ferry over. (178)

Skip the $45 lobster cocktail app. Yes, there sure is a deceptively generous half pound of lobster on that funny little plate, but it and any other seafood listed as part of this dish are drowned in a runny, very dill forward cream sauce. The chorizo shrimp pasta was fantastic. Pasta was al dente. Textures and flavors wonderfully layered. Delicious. The burger was fine. Fish and chips also fine, fries were fresh and hot. Great wine and cocktails list, languid but friendly service on a Thursday night in July. The interior space is all cement, metal and stone. Nothing offers acoustic relief from every tipsy guffaw, loud comment and the noise of the bartender shaking that martini, scooping the ice or collecting glasses. I wished I had brought my AirPods. I'd been living in Dartmouth for a couple months before I finally made my first visit (cut me some…read moreslack, unpacking takes time!), with my wife and I stopping by after work on a Friday. I'd call it happy hour, but Dear Friend is too popular and upscale to bother offering a happy hour, so let's go with the Quebecois term, cinq à sept. I began my weekend wind-down with one of their house creations, All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down). It seemed fitting giving my age demographic, and it was one of the few specialty cocktails with whisk(e)y in it. With an ingredient list even longer than its irreverent title, it combines Jim Beam rye, Hennessey VS cognac, beef tallow (!!), cedar and bayberry leaf. After an impressive rundown from the bartender on the work that went into creating this drink, I thoroughly appreciated it's warmth and depth of flavour on a cool fall evening. The beef tallow made for a velvety smooth mouthfeel, without having globs of fat floating in the drink, and the cedar and bayberry added herbal undertones that contributed without overpowering. For some solid sustenance, we stuck to the bar bites section of the menu, although they do have bigger apps and full-size entrees. Marinated olives were an easy choice, while the falafels beckoned with their deep-fried crispness. To round out our trio, we had to go with the house Party Mix. The Party Mix came out first, and deviates from the classic chip mix by combining sweet and savoury, with caramel popcorn, spiced cashews and mini chocolate truffles. It was endlessly snackable, and great for having a drink at the bar over great conversation with your significant other. I'm not one for the standard black or green olives that come out of ungodly large food service containers, but I've been slowly warming up to higher tier olives, and Dear Friend's very generous bowl was a great bar snack, bordering on small meal. The dish that disappeared the quickest was the falafels. This was partially because they were so damn good and there waere four pieces, as opposed to the other two dishes. They came in finger-form, as opposed to the small pucks/balls that are more commonly seen, and the extra surface area allowed for an even crispier bite, while a delicious cashew tahini cream that lent to the familiar falafel flavour, but with a certain je ne sais quoi. That's right, French twice in one review - I'm fancy AF! Small bits of pickled cauliflower and a delicate layer of microgreens brought brighter flavours to play off the richer note of the falafel and tahini. It's now a local cliché to talk about how much downtown Dartmouth has changed over the past decade or so, and Dear Friend has been one of the standard bearers of that continued change these past few years with their thoughtfully crafted beverages and shareable bites.

When Halloween came around and my wife and I were looking for some easy eats before the onslaught…read moreof trick-or-treaters, admittedly, R&B Kitchen was not our first choice. Unfortunately, many other people had a similar first choice as us - pizza - and 40 demoralizing, failed calls to Yeah Yeahs nudged us toward our backup plan. Ordering was easy on Skip, with about ten options to choose from. The offerings are mainly Caribbean - oxtail and jerk chicken-based dishes figure prominently - as well as some Southern influences. We ordered a mix of things to try as much as possible, going for the jerk chicken, ox tail, and Canadian loaded mac and cheese. Our order was ready very quickly, barely longer than the drive to get it. Even with said drive, we probably got our food an hour quicker than a slammed pizza place would have been. It's hard to say which dish was the clear winner, as as all were well executed, but the loaded mac and cheese got the most oohs and ahhs. Topped with a hefty dose of Brothers pepperoni, bacon, ground beef, mushrooms and green pepper, it was like a works pizza on mac and cheese, and it definitely worked! The jerk chicken had a really good pop of flavour from its complex mix of savoury seasonings, including a zesty heat that definitely made itself known, but didn't set off any smoke detectors. The meat was deftly cooked as well, with the thigh and two drums tender but not dry and overcooked. A generous serving of rice and peas, coleslaw and cornbread rounded out a container that was on the edge of needing further structural support! My choice was the ox tail - I love the fatty, beefy mix of meat and sauce, and the pinwheel-like tail bones are weird and fun to me. R&B's ox tail was a very good rendition, checking every box. Some very large beans showed up to bulk up the dish even more, and rice and peas soaked up all the saucy goodness. R&B likely cheats a bit with their cornbread and adds flour, but it was light, fluffy and delicious, so hard to complain about. On my next time darkening their doorway, I was dining solo and opted for the BBQ ribs. When you pick up a takeout container and it's got some heft to it, you know you're in for a hearty meal, and while this dish might not check a lot of boxes on Canada's Food Guide, you're not going to be hungry afterward! Three large ribs were nestled on top of a heap of mac and cheese, with a dark glaze that was savoury and sweet - but not too sweet. The ribs were meaty, and bites came away in easy chunks, signaling a spot on cook. Not to be outdone, the baked mac and cheese was well-executed and while not as over-the-top as the loaded version, it was still a great example of this comfort food classic. The green beans were a tasty surprise because I didn't know that they not only had garlic in them, but they had a *lot* of garlic in them. Vampires take heed! A large chunk of cornbread completed the meal with a golden brown crust on top, and pleasant crumb. It wasn't quite as fluffy as a cornmeal-only cornbread, but I can't begrudge them some wheat flour to help hold things together. Consider this review a song of praise, because R&B Kitchen is hitting all the right notes, and next time we order, they'll be second fiddle to no one.
